NASA Spacecraft Capture Stunning Views Of Saturn's Dancing Auroras

*[ Watch the Video: Dance of Saturn's Auroras ]*

*Lee Rannals for redOrbit.com - Your Universe Online*

Two NASA spacecraft captured 360 degree views of Saturn’s northern lights, giving a glimpse as to how the ringed planet looks when bathed in the Sun’s charged particles.

Using the Hubble Space Telescope and Cassini, NASA collaborated along with international researchers to put together the footage of the Saturnian show. Hubble provided an ultraviolet wavelength view of the auroras, while Cassini gave scientists the close-up views in infrared and visible-light.

“The result is a kind of step-by-step choreography detailing how the auroras move, showing the complexity of these auroras and how scientists can connect an outburst from the sun and its effect on the magnetic environment at Saturn,” NASA said in a statement.

Auroras are the result of solar flares, causing collisions of energetic charged particles with atoms in the high latitude atmosphere. The charge particles sent off by the solar wind are directed into a planet’s magnetic field and into the atmosphere, creating the “dancing lights” effect.

"Saturn's auroras can be fickle -- you may see fireworks, you may see nothing," Jonathan Nichols, of the University of Leicester in England, who led the work on the Hubble images, said in a statement. "In 2013, we were treated to a veritable smorgasbord of dancing auroras, from steadily shining rings to super-fast bursts of light shooting across the pole.”

The Cassini images feature a look at the changing patterns of faint emissions of scales of a few hundred miles. These changes in the aurora are tied to the fluctuating wind of charged particles blowing off the sun and blowing past Saturn.

"This is our best look yet at the rapidly changing patterns of auroral emission," Wayne Pryor, a Cassini co-investigator at Central Arizona College in Coolidge, Ariz, said in a statement. "Some bright spots come and go from image to image. Other bright features persist and rotate around the pole, but at a rate slower than Saturn's rotation."

Researchers will be able to use this data to answer some long-standing questions about the atmospheres of giant outer planets. Scientists have questioned why the high atmospheres of gas giants are heated beyond what might normally be expected due to their vast distances from the sun.

"By looking at these long sequences of images taken by different instruments, we can discover where the aurora heats the atmosphere as the particles dive into it and how long the cooking occurs,” Sarah Badman, a Cassini visual and infrared mapping spectrometer team associate at Lancaster University, England, said in a statement.

Scientists can use the visible-light data to figure out the colors of Saturn’s auroras, which show red and purple. On Earth, auroras mostly shine green with some red at the top. According to NASA, these color differences are due to the different molecules in both planets. Earth’s auroras are created by excited nitrogen and oxygen molecules, while Saturn’s auroras derive from hydrogen molecules.

"While we expected to see some red in Saturn's aurora because hydrogen emits some red light when it gets excited, we also knew there could be color variations depending on the energies of the charged particles bombarding the atmosphere and the density of the atmosphere," Ulyana Dyudina, an imaging team associate at the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, Calif, said in a statement. "We were thrilled to learn about this colorful display that no one had seen before."

These images will help scientists learn more about how clouds of charged particles move around the planet as it spins and comes into contact with solar material.

"The auroras at Saturn are some of the planet's most glamorous features – and there was no escaping NASA's paparazzi-like attention”, Marcia Burton, a Cassini fields and particles scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif, said in a statement. "As we move into the part of the 11-year solar cycle where the sun is sending out more blobs of plasma, we hope to sort out the differences between the effects of solar activity and the internal dynamics of the Saturn system."

Gabrielle Giffords, Mark Kelly Writing Book to Encourage Gun Control

Gabrielle Giffords, Mark Kelly Writing Book to Encourage Gun Control Gabrielle Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly are collaborating on a book titled Enough: Our Fight to Keep America Safe from Gun Violence, scheduled to be released in June.

According to The Salt Lake Tribune, the book is an outgrowth of Giffords' "[chastisement of] senators who blocked gun legislation that included expanded background checks and a ban on assault weapons."

Kelly described the purpose of the book: "As Second Amendment supporters and gun owners ourselves, we hope our book rouses the long-overdue conversation our country needs to make responsible changes to our gun laws so that no more precious lives are lost."

Breitbart News has previously reported how the gunman who attacked Giffords in 2011, the gunman who opened fire in an Aurora, CO theater, the employee who killed co-workers at the D.C. Naval Yard, the man who murdered a TSA officer at LAX, the student who killed one other and then himself with a shotgun at Arapahoe High School, and the gunman who killed two people before killing himself with a shotgun at a mall in Columbia all had one thing in common: they passed the very background checks Giffords and Kelly claim will "keep America safe from gun violence."

Effort To Repeal Colorado Gun Control Laws Fails

$

Colorado's controversial ban on high-capacity ammunition magazines larger than 15 rounds will remain law after a House Democrats killed an effort to repeal the measure Monday night.

Just last week, state Democrats also stopped a Republican attempt to repeal universal background checks on all private and online gun sales and transfers.

Both restrictions were part of a package of new gun control measures signed into law in 2013 by Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper (D).

Furious opponents hit back in the wake of the laws' passing last year. Two senators who supported the bills -- Senate President John Morse (D-Colo. Springs) and state Sen. Angela Giron (D-Pueblo) -- were ousted in the state's first-ever recall election.

A third recall effort was underway against another Democrat, state Sen. Evie Hudak (D-Westminster), but Hudak resigned from office before a recall could take place.

The high-capacity magazine ban repeal bill sponsor, Rep. Chris Holbert (R-Douglas County), told Denver's 7News that Hickenlooper should have vetoed the magazine ban last year. "I believe it's what led to two recall elections," Holbert said.

Daniel Carey, a National Rifle Association lobbyist, complained that 2013's background check law was "unnecessary and unconstitutional" and that it "only unnecessarily burdens law-abiding citizens," according to the Associated Press.

The background check law's co-sponsor, Rep. Rhonda Fields (D-Aurora), told The Huffington Post that "the vast majority of gun buyers are law-abiding people, and for them a background check is no problem. But the new law is preventing significant numbers of violent criminals and people under domestic restraining orders from buying guns. That's exactly what we intended with our new background check law, and the stats prove that it's working. It's making our neighborhoods safer, and that makes me very happy."

According to data from the Colorado Bureau of Investigations, there were a total of 6,198 private sale background checks from when the law went into effect in July through December, with 122 buyers denied during that period.

Though state Republicans haven't accepted the laws, Colorado voters appear to strongly support universal background check legislation. A recent Qunnipiac survey showed that 85 percent of state voters approve of the new gun law, according to a recent Quinnipiac survey.

When asked about the statewide ban on high capacity magazines that hold more than 15 rounds, voters still approve, but by a slim 49-48 margin.

Almost 400,000 people tried to buy firearms last year in Colorado as the historic new gun laws went into effect in July, The Denver Post first reported. Reported by Huffington Post 2 hours ago.

One martini here stands out from the rest. These Disney Princesses Are Tired Of Being Damsels In Distress

What would it look like if Disney's classic princesses stood up and took their lives into their own hands -- with or without a prince in tow? According to YouTube duo AVByte, pretty darn fabulous.

Disney has received quite a bit of criticism over the years for its well-travelled "one day my prince will come" motif. The original Disney princesses had very little agency of their own -- both Snow White and Aurora spent the climaxes of their movies snoring -- and as the years went on, the prescriptive fairy-tale endings hardly changed. (Half a century after Charming first stumbled upon Snow White in the woods, feisty Ariel sold her life upstream for just the chance of dancing on land with a prince.)

Merida of 2012's "Brave" broke Scottish highland ground when she became the first addition to the princess line without a romantic interest. Queen Elsa of "Frozen" followed in her footsteps this year, and with the help of her little sister, Anna, the movie made a point of turning the all powerful true love's kiss trope on its head.

AVByte's latest tongue-in-cheek video is inspired by Elsa and all of the princesses that came before her. Watch above for a new take on fairy tale endings. Reported by Huffington Post 3 hours ago.

Colorado lawmaker shocks victim’s dad: ‘Good thing’ Aurora shooter had 100-round magazine

A Republican state senator in Colorado stunned the father of one of the victims of the Aurora theater shooting when he claimed that it was “a good thing” that James Holmes had a 100-round magazine. During a Wednesday hearing about overturning the state’s ban on magazines larger than 15 rounds, Democratic state Sen. Irene Aguilar pointed out that Holmes would have never been able to legally buy the arsenal he used to slaughter 12 people […] Reported by Raw Story 7 hours ago.

State Sen. Bernie Herpin, R-Colorado Springs, says he sponsored a bill to repeal limits on high-capacity ammunition magazines because it "was maybe a good thing [Aurora shooting suspect James Holmes] had a 100-round magazine because it jammed.”

Holmes is accused of opening fire at a Century movie theater in July 2012, leaving 12 dead and injuring 70 others.

“Perhaps James Holmes would not have been able to purchase a 100-round magazine. As it turns out, that was maybe a good thing, that he had a 100-round magazine, because it jammed. If he had instead had four, five, six 15-round magazines, there’s no telling how much damage he could’ve done until a good guy with a gun showed up,” Herpin said in his testimony to a Senate Judiciary committee on a bill to repeal a 15-round limit on magazines.

Tom Sullivan, the father of 27-year-old Alex Sullivan, who was killed at the theater, was enraged by the offensive remarks.

“I’ve had a lot of thoughts since July 20 of 2012, and I can tell you that I never had once thought that it was better that that man walked into that theater with a 100-round drum and opened fire on the over 200 people that were in that theater,” Sullivan said.

Herpin defended his remarks, saying that the high-capacity magazine “saved lives.”

“I was trying to make a point that the high-capacity magazine that he was using was unreliable, jammed, and that saved lives,” Herpin said.

The bill was later rejected on Wednesday night.

The magazine restriction was passed by Democrats in 2013 in response to mass shootings in Colorado and Newtown, Connecticut.

Colorado Democratic Sen. Jessie Ulibarri said he was concerned by Herpin’s comments.

“Twelve lives were lost, 70 were injured. That wasn’t a good thing in any sense,” Ulibarri said.

Mastery Technologies releases online training course, "Winter Walking: Staying on Your Feet," to help preach winter walking safety for people who have to work outside during the winter months.

Novi, MI (PRWEB) February 13, 2014

As arctic weather continues to plague much of the United States, it serves as the perfect setting to revisit actions to remain safe during freezing conditions. Thousands of people are injured in slips and falls during winter each year. The easiest way to avoid injury is being knowledgeable in preventive actions to handle the slippery winter conditions. Mastery Technologies supplies a newly released course, video originally produced by Aurora Pictures, regarding safety precautions to prevent slips and falls in the winter, titled “Winter Walking: Staying on Your Feet.” What better time to keep workers informed on these safety tips than during recent record-breaking, treacherous winter conditions.

This course reiterates common sense about slip and fall prevention, and serves as a great refresher on the basics to help increase awareness and prevent injuries. The course thoroughly covers topics such as:

•Adjusting to slippery conditions
•Winter walking hazards and how to avoid injury
•How to fall

Most falls occur in the winter time because majority of people do not adjust for the change in conditions. Whether working outside or just traveling through slippery conditions, it is imperative to plan ahead, pay attention, and slow down.

Not only is “Winter Walking: Staying on Your Feet,” a newly released course, it is also available in Mastery’s Advantage™ and Video On Demand (VOD) platforms. In the Advantage™ course, broadcast-quality production values are used along with frequent interactions, practice activities, and quizzes with reviews to ensure workers master 100% of the course’s material. Mastery’s VOD courses contain the entire instructional presentation of a training course. All of Mastery’s VOD courses include a topical index, displayed on the side of the video when not in full-screen mode. Most VOD courses end with a quiz, including feedback on question answers. Video On Demand titles play on all devices, including desktops, smart phones and tablets.

Colorado Republican: It Was Actually 'A Good Thing' Aurora Shooter Had 100-Round Magazine

Colorado Republican Sen. Bernie Herpin (Colo. Springs) is facing backlash for saying that it was "maybe a good thing" that accused gunman James Holmes used a 100-round ammunition magazine during the 2012 Aurora theater shooting. The massacre left 12 people dead and more than 70 wounded.

"As it turns out, that was maybe a good thing that he had a 100-round magazine because it jammed," Herpin said Wednesday during a hearing on a bill that would repeal a state ban on high-capacity magazines that hold more than 15 rounds.

"If he had four, five, six 15-round magazines, there’s no telling how much damage he could have done until a good guy with a gun showed up," Herpin added.

Herpin was responding to a question from state Sen. Irene Aguilar (D-Denver) which outlined the fact that Holmes purchased the 100-round magazine legally prior to the shooting -- and that had the high-capacity magazine ban been in place back in 2012, Holmes wouldn't have been able to purchase an ammunition magazine that held so many rounds.

Tom Sullivan, whose 27-year-old son Alex who was killed in the shooting and who testified against Herpin's repeal bill, was outraged by Herpin's remarks, according to The Denver Post.

"I've had a lot of thoughts since July 20 of 2012 and I can tell you that I never have once thought that it was better that that man walked into that theater with a 100-round drum and opened fire on the over 200 people that were in that theater," Sullivan said during the hearing, Denver's 7News reported. "From every indication I have, from the pictures and reports that I received from the DA, it says that 76 bullets came out of that magazine."

After testifying, Herpin said he was trying to illustrate that high-capacity magazines like the one Holmes allegedly used can be unreliable, and the fact that it jammed may have saved lives in the theater. "Certainly I don't condone what happened," Herpin added.

Political blog ColoradoPols had strong words for Herpin in their analysis:
Just a couple of points to add, since this horrifyingly tortured logic doesn't really merit anything you'd call "analysis." Herpin was trying to make a point, not wholly inaccurate, that some of the cheaper civilian-grade high capacity drum magazines aren't very reliable. The drum magazine used by the Aurora shooter in fact did jam his assault rifle–after numerous fatal shots. But the idea that anyone would count on product defects to protect the public in an actual shooting is, of course, ludicrous beyond words. Also, we are obliged to note that in the Sandy Hook Elementary shootings, the Colorado-made Magpul high capacity magazines did not jam.
A Connecticut State Attorney's Office revealed last year that school shooter Adam Lanza used Magpul's popular PMAG, or polymer magazine, a 30-round ammunition magazine.

Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper (D) signed several new gun control measures into law in 2013 including the ban on high-capacity magazines and a bill requiring universal background checks for all gun sales and transfers.

Herpin was elected last September replacing Senate President John Morse (D-Colo. Springs), one of two Democratic lawmakers recalled over their support for the state's strict new gun laws. State Sen. Angela Giron (D-Pueblo) was also recalled and a third recall effort was underway against another Democrat, state Sen. Evie Hudak (D-Westminster), but Hudak resigned from office before a recall could take place.

State Republicans have already attempted to repeal both the background checks and high-capacity magazine laws this legislative session, but the state Democrats, who control both the House and Senate, continue to squash the efforts.

KDVR's Eli Stoklos reported that Herpin's comments -- along with dwindling numbers of outraged gun owners showing up at the Capitol -- might point to the Republican's repeal effort backfiring for the party in the state.

It's "a good thing" Aurora movie-theater mass-killer James Holmes "had a 100-round magazine," says a Republican Colorado state senator. "If he had four, five, six 15-round magazines, there's no telling how much damage he could have done until a good guy with a gun showed up."
