Newly-Released Combustible Dust Course Offers Precautions and Procedures to Prevent Explosions

Mastery Technologies releases combustible dust training to help employees recognize and take proper action for dealing with dust around the workplace.

Novi, Michigan (PRWEB) February 14, 2014

There is a small and silent material in the workplace holding the power to wreak great havoc; dust. Lurking on surfaces, in vents and duct work, dust has the potential to become combustible which can cause severe injury, burns or death. Many facilities with processes producing dust or fine particles may be at risk for a dust explosion, often with catastrophic results. Mastery Technologies released a new online training course, originally produced by Aurora Pictures, “Combustible Dust.” Precautions must be taken and proper procedures should be enforced, and the only way to implement these is to supply workers with proper training.

When discussing combustible dust, there are five ingredients needed for an explosion to occur. These five ingredients, known as the “dust explosion pentagon,” include fuel, oxygen, heat, dispersion, and confinement. An explosion emerges when dust fuel is dispersed into oxygen reaching a sufficient level of concentration in an area of confinement and comes into contact with an ignition source, heat.

Dust is not only hazardous because of its explosive potential, it can also create other hazards in the workplace by making surfaces slippery, and the risk of causing harm to the body by breathing it in or getting it in eyes. This “Combustible Dust” training course offers thorough and comprehensive steps to prevent the event of a dust explosion by covering topics such as explosion basics and preventing hazards.

Not only is “Combustible Dust,” a newly released course, it is also available in both Mastery’s Advantage™ and Video On Demand (VOD) platforms. In the Advantage™ course, broadcast-quality production values are used along with frequent interactions, practice activities, and quizzes with reviews to ensure workers master 100% of the course’s material. VOD courses provide large images which appear sharp when viewed in a normal video window. Full screen display sizes are provided, delivering clear audio and sharp video, even when projected or displayed on HDTV screens. Video On Demand titles play on all devices, including desktops, smart phones and tablets.

Both formats of this High-Definition video training course are available at the affordable price of $19.95 per learner. Volume pricing is available for employer purchases. For more inquiries on this course or other Mastery course platforms, visit Mastery.com.

Man Treks 14 Miles On Subzero Day To Give Fiancée The Perfect Valentine

$

It may be the most heartwarming valentine to ever to come out of subzero temperatures.

To surprise his fiancée for Valentine's Day, stay-at-home dad Tyler Morrick braved the cold for more than four hours as he created a massive message to his sweetheart on top of a frozen pond near the home the couple's home in Aurora, Ill.

"Outside of having legal, binding papers saying we are married, in my mind we are already married," he said of Rachel Maschmeier, with whom he has an 18-month-old daughter. "She is my wife, my fiancée, my best friend."

So Morrick went big -- really big -- and walked overnight to spell out "I love you, will you be my Valentine?" in snow about 100 feet wide. The 29-year-old said the idea to don a head lamp and warm jacket and haul to a nearby pond was a "split-second" decision that came to him while working on his motorcycle early Wednesday morning.
Photos courtesy Tyler Morrick

Morrick began writing his valentine by moonlight in what he later learned was -7 degree weather with -19 degree windchill. Completing the message shortly after 5 a.m., Morrick estimated he walked between 13-14 miles in the process.

"I actually lost 4.5 pounds by doing this," Morrick said. "It was cold and very challenging but I told myself if I give up, it's like giving up on our relationship, so there was no option of quitting or even taking a break."

Morrick says he hopes to inspire others to embrace that same belief that when it comes to love, there's no such thing as giving up.

"I'm setting the bar for these boys that will be coming after my little girl when she gets older," he said.

Morrick called his fiancée "without a doubt the greatest thing to ever happen to me" and said she's "the most amazing mother to our 18-month-old daughter."

"Everyone tells me that she is so lucky to have me and I tell them that I am far more lucky to have found her."

To demonstrate that point, he said, he punctuated the question with a snow angel, to represent "my belief that [Rachel] was sent to me from an angel above." AW! Reported by Huffington Post 4 days ago.

Havana BID Executive Director Gayle Jetchick and Secretary Michael Sheldon have been recognized as 2 of 7 “Movers & Shakers” in February’s Aurora Magazine.

Aurora, Colorado (PRWEB) February 14, 2014

In its February, 2014, issue, Aurora Magazine selected two Havana Business Improvement District (BID) Board Members among seven total people who, the magazine calls, “Seven plucky people you may not know that have a huge impact on everyone’s life in Aurora—including yours.” Havana BID Executive Director Gayle Jetchick and Board Secretary Michael Sheldon are two of the seven.

The magazine article recalls the area’s challenges still present a few years ago—a dead shopping mall, a “rotting” Fan Fare site and a retail exodus—and cites Jetchick’s results in revitalizing shopping in Aurora.

“Dozens of new businesses have moved to the bustling [Havana] neighborhood in recent years,” writes reporter Brandon Johansson, “and the existing retail locations are 95 percent full.” Aurora Magazine also cites some of the BID’s unique achievements, including becoming, “a mecca of ethnic dining;” the replacement of the old Buckingham Square Mall with the, “booming Gardens on Havana shopping district;” and the fact that auto dealerships on Havana Street boast more sales than anywhere else in Colorado.

Under the On Havana Street brand, the BID has changed purchase patterns and increased Aurora, Colorado, retail revenues through event marketing. The magazine specifically mentions the annual Cruzin’ Havana car show that Jetchick estimates draws over 20,000 people from seven states. The District’s upcoming events calendar includes an Ides of March Toga Party & Artist Talk March 15, 2014, at Havana Auto Parts, which is an extension of the nationally recognized Art 2C On Havana program, and an extremely popular annual Earth Day Electronic Recycling and Document Shredding event April 19 at The Stampede.

Sheldon’s role in creating the Anschutz Medical Campus from what was the Fitzsimons Army Medical Center is highlighted, though the magazine also correctly states, “For almost 30 years, Sheldon has been a central figure in seemingly every major development in [Aurora].” Sheldon is a land-use attorney by trade, specializing in large-scale development. His credits include Tallyn’s Reach, Murphy Creek and “transportation-oriented developments” along I-225.

Also recognized in the magazine were State Senator Morgan Carroll, Aurora Public Schools Superintendent Rico Munn, Mayor Steve Hogan, RTD board member Tom Tobiassen and Aurora Cultural Arts District’s Tracy Weil.

“It’s an honor for me and Michael to be in this esteemed company,” said Jetchick, “just as it’s an honor to represent all the people who work so hard every day to help Aurora continue to move forward.”

Stress the Importance of Proper Ladder Use with New Ladder Safety Training

Mastery releases new online ladder safety course to promote safe work practices and help employees prevent accidents and injuries when working on ladders. Every year 165,000 people are injured and 300 people are killed from improper ladder use; safety training can help prevent these tragedies.

Novi, MI (PRWEB) February 17, 2014

Every year 300 people are killed and 165,000 are injured while using ladders. Though the use of ladders seem like a mindless job skill, once complacency shows up at work, so does the risk of injury, or worse, death. There is much more to working with ladders than climbing one, and Mastery Technologies supplies the training to prove that. The newly released course “Ladder Safety,” originally produced by Aurora Pictures, addresses key safety steps to prevent accidents from taking place on the job.

With statistics demonstrating the importance of ladder safety, there are vital safety considerations and techniques workers must be familiar with to stay safe. Most people are injured and killed because of improper ladder use, mainly from using a ladder that is too short or one that cannot support the workload. Mastery’s “Ladder Safety” helps improve safe work practices by covering topics such as:

•Inspecting ladders
•Setting up ladders
•Using extension ladders
•Transporting ladders
•Using step ladders
•Working on ladders
•Safety tips

Ladders add risk to any job being performed because of the height. Even falls from a seemingly short distance can lead to terrible injuries. Everyone wants to go home safely at the end of the day and in order to do so proper training and procedures must be enforced.

Not only is “Ladder Safety,” a newly released course, it is available in Mastery’s Advantage™ and Video On Demand (VOD) platforms. In the Advantage™ course, broadcast-quality production values are used along with frequent interactions, practice activities, and quizzes with reviews to ensure workers master 100% of the course’s material. Mastery’s VOD courses contain the entire instructional presentation of a training course. All of Mastery’s VOD courses include a topical index, displayed on the side of the video when not in full-screen mode. Video On Demand titles play on all devices, including desktops, smart phones and tablets.

Both formats of this course are available at the affordable price of $19.95 per learner. Volume pricing is available for employer purchases. For more inquiries on this course or other Mastery course platforms, visit Mastery.com.

In the past 45 days, Charles Rutenberg Realty has opened its doors to 15 new agents hailing from major firms, such as Coldwell Banker, Century 21, RE/Mex, Keller Williams, and Exit Realty.

(PRWEB) February 18, 2014

According to the ULI's "Real Estate Trends for 2014" publication, 2014 may well be the year that the real estate markets "recovers from the recovery." Real estate professionals expect growth to be sufficient to generate consistent and growing demand for real estate across all property types.

The private real estate industry is in a transition mode where agents are being recognized as the primary source of new business. Charles Rutenberg Realty has not been slow to make the transition, resulting in a number of agents transferring to the firm in 2014.

"Charles Rutenberg Realty is built on the premise that the agent is the creator of new business and, as such, entitled to retain the vast majority of the income earned. We are proud that hundreds of agents a year recognize this fact and look to build their business under the Charles Rutenberg Realty model", states Ray Zabielski, Managing Broker of the Chicago firm.

According to CoreLogic, single-family home prices in the Chicago area rose by 12.5% year over year in December of 2013; the fourth highest percentage among the largest metropolitan areas. Gloria Mindock Talks About Poetry and Truth

Gloria Mindock is the author of La Porţile Raiului (Ars Longa Press, 2010, Romania) translated into the Romanian by Flavia Cosma, Nothing Divine Here (U Soku Stampa, 2010, Montenegro), and Blood Soaked Dresses (Ibbetson, 2007). She is founding editor of Cervena Barva Press, editor of the Istanbul Literary Review (Turkey) and one of the USA editors for Levure Litteraire (France). Gloria's poetry has been translated and published into Romanian, Serbian, Spanish, and French. Widely published, her work has appeared in numerous magazines such as Vatra Veche, UNU: Revistă de Cultură, Gând Românesc, Citadela, Aurora (Romania), Web Del Sol, Arabesques, River Styx, Phoebe, Poet Lore, Ibbetson, Thrice, Thunderclap and in the anthology Hildagards Daughters (Belgium).

Gloria's new book, Whiteness of Bone is forthcoming and her fourth chapbook, Pleasure Trout was just published by Muddy River Books. She has had nominations for the Pushcart Prize, St. Botolph Award, and was awarded a fellowship from the Massachusetts Cultural Council distributed by the Somerville Arts Council.

*Loren Kleinman (LK): You're the editor and publisher of Cervena Barva Press and editor of the Istanbul Literary Review based in Turkey. You've also published two chapbooks, Doppleganger (S. Press) and Oh Angel (U Soku Stampa) and three poetry collections. Which do you prefer: publishing or writing? How do you manage your time between serving as publisher, editor and writer?*

Gloria Mindock (GM): I am a writer first, a publisher second. Since I am an insomniac, I write in the early morning hours and on Sunday mornings. I devote more time to publishing, but it all seems to balance out in the end. Cervena Barva Press is a two person press, William J. Kelle and I. Sometimes there is not enough time to get done all that I want to. I have been lucky over the years to have some amazing interns who have been such a great help. The press has been growing so it has been difficult to keep up with it. I did make one addition to the press this year. I added Flavia Cosma as my international editor. I am really excited about having her join the press.

During the day, while I am at work as a social worker, if I have time, I answer my e-mails so that I don't have to in the evenings. I also promote on Facebook and list serves during the day. This frees me to work on books in the evening, send out press releases and other responsibilities for the press.

*LK: You have quite the international CV. Can you talk about your cross cultural literary involvement? How has it expanded your awareness as a writer? As a poet?
*
GM: I have always been influenced by Eastern European writing. When I decided to start Cervena Barva Press in 2005, publishing writers from all over the world was my primary intent and still is today. Publishing and corresponding with writers from many different countries and reading their poetry and fiction, has stimulated me as a writer. I love reading good work and it makes me want to write. Since many of my poems are about the atrocities committed in the world, I have gained knowledge first hand and write about it from the survivors' perspective. I want to hear from the people who are experiencing it not read about it in the newspaper. Being in contact with so many writers internationally has expanded my reading of overseas work. It was high to begin with but now, it seems like most books in my library, are translations. These books I read over and over.

*LK: You also worked as a social worker. Talk about what that was like and how that's contributed to your poetry. What themes enter your work?*

GM: Yes, I work as a social worker/counselor in the addictions field. It has been 30 years at my current job but I have been in the field for 34 years. Nothing from my working in addictions has ever crept into my poetry. I keep them separate. I work with men ages 21 and over who are addicted to heroin, cocaine, benzos, alcohol and the list goes on. Since I work with this everyday, the last thing I want to do is write about it when I'm not at work. Believe me, I have many things and situations to write about from my years in the field, but I prefer not to.

My favorite themes to write about are death, angels and the atrocities.

*LK: I'm interested in reading violent poetry that looks at war, abuse, and loss. However, these are difficult subjects to write about in a way that is deliberate. I find some poets focus on the language to get the violence across rather than images. For example, I see the use of curse words that express a sense of violence linguistically rather than using imagery to takes us there. How do you express acts of violence in poetry in a way that doesn't offend or distract the reader? Should there also be a sense of peace at the end?*

GM: I use imagery to express death, violence, war and a sense of loss in my poetry.
Cuss words won't happen in my poetry to get the horror across. I don't think you need them. I see so much of it today and it just takes away from the poem. If it is used in a direct quote, well, okay. Many just throw it in and it just doesn't work. My language is graphic in description such as writing about machetes hacking bodies, blood, bones and the way violence is used. These are constantly mentioned in my poems. The purpose is not to offend but wake up the reader to what is happening in the world. I am always surprised how many people don't know about all the atrocities that are still happening today. Many have heard a few things about past atrocities but don't know to what extent the loss, the murder, the ethnic cleansings.

How could I ever put a sense of peace in my poems, when there is no peace in the place I am writing about? So no, there should be no sense of peace at the end of the poem. Just tell it like it is.

*LK: Does poetry have to be true? Why? Why not?*

GM: Poetry does not have to be true. In my book, Nothing Divine Here, none of the poems are about me though they are written in first person like I experienced them. The poems are years of listening to other people on the streets, cafes, buses etc... tell me their problems and most of it was always about a bad relationship. So I took what they told me and wrote about it like I was the one who went through all this bad stuff.

I love reading poetry that is true and not true. What I want is for the writing to grab me and reach my soul.

*LK: Why should we care about poetry?*

GM: Without freedom of expression in this genre, the arts would suffer. The world is so much richer with poetry in it. Think about how long poetry goes back in time, and it is still with us. There are so many forms and styles of poetry so there is something for everyone. Life would be boring without it. When I read good poetry, it gives me hope for this world. Poetry is the heart and soul of the world. Sounds cliché but poetry is life. We need it. I write because I write. I don't think about it. I just know I have to do it. So maybe it is difficult for me to explain why we need poetry. I just know that we do. I don't think about it. Ever since I was a little girl, I have been surrounded by poetry. It has always been in my life. Poetry expressing the inner depths of life. Reported by Huffington Post 3 hours ago.

This History of the People’s Curse, Or: Why LeMons Doesn’t Destroy Cars with Excavators Anymore

This History of the People’s Curse, Or: Why LeMons Doesn’t Destroy Cars with Excavators Anymore During the first few years of the 24 Hours of LeMons, each team was issued a ballot with a list of all the teams at their race. By the end of the first race day (Saturday), each team submitted theirs with a vote for a favorite team—the top vote-getter got the People’s Choice award—and a vote for the team they hated the most. The most reviled team as determined by the voting would fall victim to the dreaded People’s Curse, in which their race car would be obliterated in dramatic, entertaining fashion. Here, the inside story of the People’s Curse from its inception to not-so-glorious demise:The idea behind the People’s Curse was that overaggressive or cheating teams that ruined everybody’s racing fun would have an incentive to behave better, while also providing a glorious spectacle on Sunday morning. But The Curse eventually got out of hand, and it veered off into territory never foreseen by the LeMons Chief Perpetrator and his henchmen.

It’s somehow fitting that the very first LeMons race, which was held at the notorious Altamont Motor Speedway in 2006, featured the Car and Driver 1995 Olds Aurora getting zapped by the very first LeMons People’s Curse, that being pounded by sledgehammer-wielding women and flipped onto its roof by an angry mob. Why? Well, it seems that many racers simply couldn’t believe an 11-year-old V-8 luxury sedan was obtained for just $500. On top of that, the deciding vote was cast by C/D‘s very own team. The destruction of the C/D Olds just wasn’t sufficiently awe-inspiring, at least not in the eyes of Chief Perp Jay Lamm, so he arranged to have a big ol’ excavator and skilled operator on hand for the California races during the 2007 season. A team condemned to The Curse would be given a short time—say 20 minutes—to remove the race seat, two-way radio, harnesses, and other valuable gear from the car, and then that car would be torn limb from limb while a baying crowd screamed for blood. Here’s the Mazdasaurus Rex Mazda 626, whose engine sounded suspiciously good at the 2007 Arse-Freeze-a-Palooza at Thunderhill Raceway.Once the car was completely eviscerated and its parts scattered all over, the JDM cylinder heads and other verboten engine goodies were laid out in plain view for the jeering rabble. The People’s Curse then became a major part of LeMons culture, with hundreds of videos of cars getting destroyed appearing online and teams with not-quite-legit-$500-cars thinking twice before adding a new round of cheats. From 2006 through the middle of the 2009 season, close to 20 teams had their cars condemned by their peers and ripped apart for the crowd.A proper piece of heavy equipment couldn’t be arranged at every single venue. For the 2008 Detroit (actually Toledo) race, Team First Blood won both the People’s Choice (for building a six-wheeled Army truck with Rambo operating a machine gun in the bed) and the People’s Curse (for being maddeningly slow and clogging up the track), and the team members were commanded to destroy their own race truck with axes and sledgehammers. This bunch went on to build some of the greatest LeMons cars the world has ever seen, yet they didn’t hesitate to bash the crap out of their creation. In Texas and Louisiana, hotbed of Spec Miata madness, suspiciously well-sorted Mazda Miatas won the Curse in three consecutive races. It’s true, there’s something satisfying about watching the will of the mob being expressed through destruction of a hated machine, but something seemed a bit off by 2009. It seemed that more and more Curse votes were being cast because of local animosities and/or paddock whispering campaigns meant to sabotage the competition. Meanwhile, teams had gone from racing disposable, one-use beaters to racing cars on which they lavished great quantities of sweat and love, and the cost of building a car grew as the LeMons technical rules became stricter.

All of this meant much higher stakes for the Curse and more fear of it by teams that needn’t have worried, although the positive effect of teams civilizing their red-misty drivers—in order to avoid getting Curse votes—couldn’t be overlooked. The benefits of the Curse still outweighed the drawbacks, but the fact that there were drawbacks was a new development for those of us at LeMons HQ.At the Laissez les Crapheaps Roulez race, held at No Problem Raceway in Louisiana, the winner of the People’s Curse was the Miata driven by Team Black Widow. Even though the rules stated that People’s Curse judgment was final, no appeals, the Black Widows loaded their car on the trailer and burned rubber out of the facility, never to be seen again. Some racers who happened to be Louisiana law-enforcement officers offered to have the fugitives from LeMons justice tracked down and brought back to the track for some swamp-style payback, but we just let them go.The racers and spectators at No Problem had built themselves up to a pitchforks-and-torches-grade bloodlust to see a car destroyed, though, and there was some danger they might take out their fury on one of our rental cars. Fortunately, the BABE Rally had stopped at No Problem, and a couple of BABE guys had had enough of their bad-running VW Rabbit. So, they offered their car to the jaws of the People’s Curse front-end loader, and the destruction was total. For the New England 2009 race, the organizers came up with an idea that seemed brilliant at the time: audience participation in the destruction of the doomed car! Every racer at the track would be allowed to choose a single tool, and several hundred tool-wielding racers would descend on the Cursed car for several minutes of all-out dismantling. When we saw the crowd marching toward the condemned Impala with baseball bats, six-foot lengths of steel pipe (with faucets attached), F-250 driveshafts, pickaxes, log grenades, and (probably) burlap sacks filled with concrete chunks and Lawn Darts, we got a bit worried about the whole safety thing. Those wielding the larger implements of destruction were pretty good about not bashing other racers, but things got pretty hectic.Crash! Aieee! Smash! RARAGHARAGHARGHARGH!Nobody got hurt, and the Chief Perp really loved the end-of-the-world atmosphere of this version of the People’s Curse. Surely there must be some way to keep the audience-participation thing . . . without the likelihood of a dozen racers having to visit the emergency room.

So, across the country at the Buttonwillow Histrionics in California, the instructions were a bit different: Each team would send one representative, and that person would be allowed a single small automotive tool. Wrenches would be fair game, but there’d be no Paul Bunyan– or Hank Aaron–style two-handed swings of massive blunt instruments. Still, there was a certain mid-apocalyptic air about the participants gathering to dismantle the Black Iron Racing BMW 5-series.This version of the curse was certainly frenzied, and the Black Iron BMW was fairly well disassembled during the allotted three minutes. However, the team was able to get their car back together after a few hours, and they rejoined the race in time to take the checkered flag. One of the most satisfying People’s Curses of all time came at the 2009 Goin’ For Broken race, held at Reno-Fernley Raceway in the Nevada high desert. LeMons HQ owned this very rusty and miserable Volkswagen Microbus, which was used for the Highway 17 penalty (named after the road to patchouli-scented Santa Cruz). Those who drive Highway 17 usually spend what feels like hours being stuck on a steep grade behind a smoky, bad-running air-cooled Volkswagen full of dirty, stinking Deadheads, and so the Highway 17 penalty recreated this experience on the race track. Each of the LeMons organizers had been forced to drive this VW, with its balky shifter, fritzy electrical system, and oil-smoke gushing out of the heater vents, and all of us hated it with a cold passion. A few of us suggested to some racers that perhaps they should vote for the bus (an illustration of which decorated each ballot) instead of one of the teams. The Curse at this race seemed to be destined for a wildly-over-budget Acura Integra, with a Bobcat poised to do some ripping and gouging, but then a Cat D9 fired up and proceeded to smash the VW so thoroughly that it wasn’t even recognizable as a motor vehicle. This last-second switcheroo was a real crowd-pleaser, although some whiners later chastised us for ruining an allegedly restorable VW. We’d spent the whole of the previous day trying to give that bus away for free, however, spreading the word among the hundreds of alleged classic-VW lovers at the event, and nobody wanted to rescue it. It’s one thing to say an old car is worth saving, and quite another to actually do the saving yourself. Then, at the infamous Lamest Day race, held at an incredibly muddy Nelson Ledges, a vote took place that really started to change our minds about the usefulness of the People’s Curse. This Porsche 944 showed up with a fairly nice paint job but nothing very impressive in the mechanical department. As Porsches in LeMons tend to do, it blew its head gasket a few laps into the race and its crew spent the rest of the day spinning wrenches. When we counted the People’s Curse ballots that night, we found only a handful of the 122 teams had voted, and that the green Porsche had received the most Curse votes: all of seven. That’s right, we had to destroy a car that hadn’t even run all day, because seven out of 122 teams thought that it “looked too nice” to be a proper LeMons car. Cash for Clunkers was in full effect at that time, and we’d obtained some genuine engine-killing sodium silicate solution to clunker-ize the Cursed car. The Chief Perp reluctantly poured the stuff in the Porsche’s crankcase, but the whole affair left a bad taste in our mouths. In the meantime, the LeMons Supreme Court (of which I am now Chief Justice) had become less focused on crowd-pleasing penalties for bad drivers and more devoted to the idea of pulling crashy, aggressive, or otherwise problematic racers off the track. We begun parking teams for several hours after their fourth, or even third, black flag during a race session. We’d also become much better at identifying and punishing teams that had added a bit too much Cheatonium-239 to their supposedly sub-500-buck race cars. These developments meant that the need for the Curse to prevent bad behavior had diminished.Still, the ritual of the People’s Curse had become deeply embedded in LeMons culture, and most of the racers looked forward to the Sunday-morning destruction. But at the South Fall 2009 race, a disturbing thing happened. The top People’s Curse vote-getter was the car that finished Saturday’s race session in P1. The runner-up was the P2 car. The second runner-up was the P3 car. Clearly, teams had voted for the contending cars because they were doing well, not because of any bad on-track behavior. Chief Perp Lamm stood on the accused Curse victim and asked the crowd if they really wanted to destroy the leading car just because it was well-driven. An affirmative reaction was given, and the White Lightning Mazda RX-7 was spared.Rusty Hood Racing, a team with an irredeemably broken Ford Ranger, stepped up and donated their truck to the excavator’s hungry jaws. Beertech Racing chimed in and offered their E30 BMW 3-series as well. The audience got their metal-rippin’ show after all.

--------------------After all that, we knew that we couldn’t continue doing the People’s Curse as we’d come to know it. We changed the People’s Choice award to the Organizer’s Choice, making it more prestigious while taking the weird results of low-voter-turnout ballots out of the picture. We tried doing sort of a People’s Curse Lite for a while (making teams remove and reinstall a cylinder head, for example), and then we tried a few giving the Curse ballot winner some penalty laps at a few races. Eventually, though, the People’s Curse was retired quietly. What was the need for it, when the LeMons Supreme Court operates with the wisdom of Ganesha? The LeMons community didn’t get up in arms about the loss of the People’s Curse, since the LeMons Supreme Court had stepped up to keep the worst-offending teams in check, plus teams no longer needed to worry about a fluke vote terminating their much-sweated-over race car. Sometimes prospective racers who have watched old People’s Curse videos fret that their cars will be Cursed, and we explain to them that we haven’t destroyed a LeMons car for nearly five years and they needn’t freak out about it. We enjoyed the People’s Curse during its heyday of 2007 and 2008, but we’re ultimately happy to be done with it. Reported by Car and Driver 3 hours ago.

Saturn's Auroras Dancing In 360-Degree Detail Are Just Dazzling (VIDEO)

Saturn's auroras dance in a new video that shows the ringed planet's northern and southern lights shining in amazing, 360-degree detail.

Scientists combined observations from NASA's Cassini spacecraft with views from the Hubble Space Telescope to create the new video of auroras on Saturn unveiled today (Feb. 11). The video shows multiple views of Saturn's auroras as they appear in different wavelengths of light.

The Cassini probe, which is currently orbiting Saturn, and the Hubble Space Telescope spotted Saturn's cosmic light shows in April and May 2013. By analyzing the data, scientists found that the aurora activity was caused by the solar wind. When charged particles carried away from the sun on the solar wind slam into Saturn's atmosphere, it can cause the celestial lights to glow at the planet's poles. [See amazing photos of Earth's auroras taken in 2014]

Ultraviolet and infrared images from NASA's Cassini spacecraft and Hubble Space Telescope show active and quiet auroras at Saturn's north and south poles.

"Saturn's auroras can be fickle — you may see fireworks, you may see nothing," leader of the work on the Hubble images Jonathan Nichols of the University of Leicester in England, said in a statement. "In 2013, we were treated to a veritable smorgasbord of dancing auroras, from steadily shining rings to super-fast bursts of light shooting across the pole."

Saturn's northern and southern lights glow in red on the bottom and purple on top in visible light, according to Cassini photos. Earth's auroras are green on the bottom and red on top. The difference in color is due to variation in the dominant molecules of each planet's atmospheres. Nitrogen and oxygen are prevalent in Earth's auroras, while Saturn's are composed of hydrogen, NASA officials said.

The Cassini and Hubble telescope photos give scientists a new look at how the sun affects the planet's auroras and how the lights move, NASA officials said in a statement.

"Scientists have wondered why the high atmospheres of Saturn and other gas giants are heated far beyond what might normally be expected by their distance from the sun," Sarah Badman, a Cassini visual and infrared mapping spectrometer team associate at Lancaster University, England, said in a statement. "By looking at these long sequences of images taken by different instruments, we can discover where the aurora heats the atmosphere as the particles dive into it and how long the cooking occurs."

NASA's Cassini spacecraft shows curtain-like auroras at Saturn that are red at the bottom and purple at the top. This is how the auroras would look to the human eye. The height of this particular part of the aurora is about 870 miles (1,400 kilometers). This image from Cassini's imaging cameras shows particularly bright auroras on Nov. 29, 2010.

By analyzing the new images, scientists have also found more evidence that auroras can be created through new connections in magnetic field lines. In one part of the new video, a bright part of the aurora moves in time with the position of Saturn's moon Mimas, NASA officials said. Earlier images have also shown that a bright aurora spot could be associated with the moon Enceladus, NASA officials added.

"This is our best look yet at the rapidly changing patterns of auroral emission," Wayne Pryor, a Cassini co-investigator at Central Arizona College in Arizona, said in a statement. "Some bright spots come and go from image to image. Other bright features persist and rotate around the pole, but at a rate slower than Saturn's rotation."

Scientists are still combing through data collected during the 2013 auroras. A group of scientists are analyzing ground-based data gathered at the Keck Observatory in Hawaii and NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility to piece together an even more comprehensive view of the aurora events on Saturn between April and May of 2013, NASA officials said.

"The auroras at Saturn are some of the planet's most glamorous features – and there was no escaping NASA's paparazzi-like attention”, said Marcia Burton, a Cassini fields and particles scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., who is helping to coordinate these observations. "As we move into the part of the 11-year solar cycle where the sun is sending out more blobs of plasma, we hope to sort out the differences between the effects of solar activity and the internal dynamics of the Saturn system."
