Gun Control Ad Starring Gabrielle Giffords to Air Before State of the Union

Gun Control Ad Starring Gabrielle Giffords to Air Before State of the Union In a commercial set to run just before and after President Obama's January 28 State of the Union (SOTU) address, Gabrielle Giffords looks into the camera and says, "Congress is afraid of the gun lobby."

According to the Associated Press , Giffords will push background checks as a way to "make it harder for criminals and the mentally ill to get guns." She will say, "9 out of 10 Americans support background checks."

On December 4, Breitbart News reported a CNN poll that showed "50 percent of Americans oppose more gun control," and only "49 percent" support it.

Breitbart News also reported those who killed innocents at the Mall in Columbia, Arapahoe High School, the DC Navy Yard, LAX, and the Aurora Theater, would not have been stopped by background checks because they all submitted to background checks to acquire their firearms.

As Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) admitted last year, the failed Senate background check bill would not have prevented Adam Lanza from carrying out his heinous crime at Sandy Hook Elementary.

Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly "are scheduled to appear before the Washington State legislature Tuesday, [just] hours before Obama's SOTU speech." They will be there "to testify in favor of a state initiative to expand background checks."

Eric Holder Regrets Not Releasing Photos of Slain Sandy Hook Children

Eric Holder Regrets Not Releasing Photos of Slain Sandy Hook Children On January 29th Attorney General Eric Holder said the public would have pushed Congress to support gun control if the photographs of the slain children at Sandy Hook Elementary had been released.

According to Main Justice, Holder said December 14, 2012 was "the worst day that [he] had as Attorney General."

Holder continued:

[If] the American people, legislators, [and] members of Congress had the ability with me that day – to walk through the classrooms and see the caked blood... if they had seen the crime scene photos of those little angels – I suspect that the outcome of the effort we mounted last year would have been different.

Holder did not mention that the background check bill the administration supported would not have prevented the heinous crime at Sandy Hook Elementary because Adam Lanza stole his guns. Nor would it have prevented the Aurora theater attack, the DC Navy Yard attack, the murder at LAX, or the more recent murders at The Mall in Columbia – in all four of these incidents the gunmen submitted to and passed firearm purchase background checks.

The question now is this: Will Holder advocate the release of crime scene photos the next time a gunman opens fire in a gun-free zone?

PEARL's 17th annual Electrical Safety, Reliability and Sustainability Conference & Exhibition will begin with a day of golf, Tomcar desert tour, receptions, and networking events on May 3, followed by two days of exhibits, educational sessions, and technical training at the Arizona Grand Resort & Spa.

The dual-track conference includes two days of technical presentations for managers and engineers, and a second hands-on training track for electrical technicians and maintenance professionals. Denver archbishop to say Mass for Broncos’ Super Bowl team

Denver, Colo., Jan 30, 2014 / 02:04 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Archbishop Samuel Aquila of Denver will say Mass for the Denver Broncos in New Jersey the night before the Feb. 2 championship game of the National Football League.

“I have been edified by the example of many NFL athletes and coaches and their families who make the effort throughout the football season to attend Sunday Mass,”  Archbishop Aquila said.

“I am sure many people are wondering what I will say to the Broncos in my homily, but all I can say is that the Holy Spirit will guide me as He wishes. What I do know, is that during the game I will be cheering for a Broncos victory!”

Archbishop Aquila said that Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio and his wife Linda invited him to attend the game with their family, and say Mass for the team. The Mass will be said Saturday night for players and coaches at the Jersey City, N.J. hotel where the team is staying.

The archbishop said he is “a long-time Broncos fan,” dating back to his time as a student at the University of Colorado-Boulder in the early 1970s.

“Even when I was Bishop of Fargo, I followed and rooted for the Broncos.”

The archbishop told the Denver Post that the opportunity to be with the Broncos was “a great gift.”

“We pray for protection, good sportsmanship, for their gifts to exceed. We place it all in the hands of the Lord.”

Jack Del Rio said at a Jan. 28 media conference he was “very appreciative” of Archbishop Aquila and “glad that he’s going to be out here with us,” the Denver Post reports.

Del Rio said that at difficult times in his career “I’ve leaned harder – more fervently – on my faith.”

The Del Rios have long been active in charitable work in Colorado, and in October 2012, they helped organize a Coats for Kids giveaway with the Knights of Columbus and Catholic Athletes for Christ.

Linda Del Rio met Pope Francis in an October visit to the Vatican, and presented him with a signed Broncos football.

The Broncos’ spiritual needs are usually served by Fr. Philip Steele, president of Regis Jesuit High School in Aurora, Colo. He normally says a private Mass for the football team on weekends when they have home games, the Denver Catholic Register reports. The Jesuit community at Regis has served the Broncos for over 20 years.

Meanwhile in Washington, Fr. Tom Belleque of St. Louise Parish in Bellevue normally says Mass for Catholic members of the Seattle Seahawks.

Greg Magnoni, communications director for the Archdiocese of Seattle, told CNA Jan. 29 that Fr. Belleque “is not planning on attending the Super Bowl, but I’m sure he’d be open to the airfare and a ticket to the game if you're offering.”

Magnoni voiced hope that Archbishop Aquila would also celebrate Mass for Catholic members of the Seahawks, and said Seattle is enthusiastic about a Seahawks appearance in the Super Bowl.

“I’ve never seen our community so excited and so united around a single event. This team has galvanized a sense of community spirit throughout western Washington and the Northwest that is unique in my experience.”

“I expect the team to be welcomed home in one of the biggest celebrations this city has ever witnessed regardless of the game’s outcome,” he added, noting that over 30,000 Seahawks fans lined the route to the Seattle airport to cheer team members as they departed for New Jersey.

5 steps to preventing heart disease

0
0
*5 steps to preventing heart disease*

The American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology caused a ruckus late last year when they issued new guidelines that, by some measures, would double the number of people who should take a cholesterol-lowering drug. Lost in the ensuing uproar was a less controversial, but in some ways more far-reaching, recommendation from the same organizations: a renewed emphasis on the power of lifestyle changes in preventing and treating heart disease.

“We did perhaps the most comprehensive review of the effects of diet and exercise on heart disease ever, and concluded that there really is good evidence that it helps and that it’s doable,” said Robert Eckel, M.D., co-chairman of the guideline-writing committee and professor of medicine at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora.

Another advantage of focusing on lifestyle: The heart-protective effects go beyond cholesterol reduction. You can lower your blood pressure, lose weight, and perhaps reduce inflammation in the arteries, a risk factor increasingly linked to heart attacks and strokes. In fact, our medical experts say that making lifestyle changes can eliminate the need for drugs.

And it’s not just the new guidelines that recognize the benefit of heart-healthy habits. Medicare is so impressed with Dr. Dean Ornish’s Program for Reversing Heart Disease—an aggressive plan that combines a very low-fat vegetarian diet with a tailored exercise program, meditation, smoking cessation, and group therapy—that it now covers the treatment for those with diagnosed heart disease.

Even better: Although concerted efforts such as the Ornish program can be quite effective, growing research shows that more modest (and less rigid) steps, such as the five we highlight here, yield important health benefits—and show that it’s never too late to make changes.

*How it helps:* People who exercise regularly have a 30 to 40 percent lower risk of heart disease than those who don’t, the research suggests. Exercise strengthens your heart muscle at the same time that it controls inflammation and helps keep weight, cholesterol, and blood pressure at healthy levels. Strength training improves heart health, too, because more muscle equals a faster metabolism, which makes it easier to keep weight off.

*What to do:* It doesn’t take a lot: Aim for 75 minutes of vigorous exercise a week (such as two Zumba classes or jogging at a 7-mph pace) or 2.5 hours of moderately intense activity (equal to walking at 4 mph), which comes out to 30 minutes a day. Even just standing up can help: Recent research suggests that prolonged sitting lowers levels of HDL (good) cholesterol, raises artery-clogging triglycerides, and decreases the insulin sensitivity that boosts the risk of type 2 diabetes. See our recent of reviews of treadmill desks as well as ellipticals, spin bikes, treadmills, and rowers.*How it helps:* Vegetables and fruit, whole grains, nuts, and beans have each been linked to a healthier heart. Those foods are high in protective nutrients, such as potassium and fiber, and free of or very low in saturated fat. And those are the same nutrients that are plentiful in the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet, which was highlighted in the new guidelines and can lower heart-disease risk by 18 percent, research shows. And a recent Harvard University study found that people who eat eight servings of fruit and vegetables daily—especially dark-green vegetables, orange fruit and vegetables, and citrus fruit—have a 17 percent lower risk of heart disease compared with those who consume two servings.

*What to do:* Make plant foods and fish the centerpiece of your meals. When you do eat meat or poultry, stick to 3-to-4-ounce portions and choose lean cuts. Include a variety of fruit and vegetables with a host of colors. That ensures that you’ll get the complete array of nutrients that have been linked to good health. Research has found that it’s the full complement of those nutrients, perhaps working together, that explains why eating whole foods is better than taking supplements of individual nutrients. In addition, replace saturated fat, such as butter, with canola, olive oil, and other unsaturated oils. (See our advice on healthier spreads.)

*How it helps:* Some research suggests that emotional stress can be almost as bad for your heart as more familiar risk factors, such as high blood pressure. Negative emotions cause the release of hormones that can threaten your heart. People in rocky relationships, for example, are more prone to heart disease. And those with stressful jobs are more likely to have high blood pressure and, if they return to work too soon after a first heart attack, to have a second one.

*What to do:* Develop your own portfolio of coping strategies. Exercise helps in part because it appears to reduce levels of stress hormones and can keep your blood pressure down when you’re under duress. Yoga and tai chi are particularly good options because they lower blood pressure and heart rate. And be sure to schedule some time each day to unwind, whether it’s with meditation, massage, or music.

*How it helps:* Moderate drinking can raise a low HDL (good) cholesterol level and reduces the risk of death from heart disease by about 25 percent. It may also help prevent type 2 diabetes and ischemic strokes, the kind caused by blood clots.

*What to do:* It doesn’t seem to matter much what kind of alcohol you consume, as long as you keep it to two drinks a day for men or one a day for women. The benefits appear to be highest among people at increased risk of heart disease, notably men older than 40 and women older than 50. If you don’t drink, though, don’t start.

*How it helps: * Smokers are two to four times more likely to develop heart disease than nonsmokers. But once you quit, you can eventually lower your risk to that of someone who has never smoked.

*What to do:* The most successful strategies for most people include counseling, nicotine-replacement products, or both. Those products are most helpful for the first two to three months of quitting, when the risk of a relapse is greatest. Using them for longer than that should be done only under the supervision of your doctor, because there is a risk of becoming addicted to the replacements themselves. See our advice on how to stop smoking.-*Read more about how to prevent and treat heart disease and our Best Buy Drugs recommendations for drugs to lower your  cholesterol levels and blood pressure levels.  *

CHICAGO, IL (PRWEB) January 28, 2014

Gateway Foundation Alcohol & Drug Treatment centers recently were surveyed by The Joint Commission, which renewed its accreditation for the next 3 years. Considered the gold standard in health care accreditation, The Joint Commission evaluation included 11 Gateway locations and 30 alcohol and drug treatment programs to verify the organization provides the highest standards in care for substance abuse and mental health issues.

To help ensure communities have access to safe, quality treatment and services, The Joint Commission is an independent, non-for-profit organization that accredits and certifies more than 20,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States. It analyzes hospitals and health care providers for compliance with more than 1,000 “individual elements of performance” applicable to a variety of functions, such as: safety and well-being of patients and staff, quality assurance, governance, environments of care and medication management.

“I consider this last evaluation our most successful since The Joint Commission awarded Gateway its first accreditation in 1992—and our extremely dedicated staff is a main reason why we are performing so well,” says Michael Darcy, President & CEO, Gateway Foundation Alcohol & Drug Treatment. “As an organization, we continuously improve the quality of our clinical programs and adopt the most effective evidenced-based clinical treatment protocols to help people overcome addiction. And, I believe The Joint Commission accreditation is a vital process that has helped Gateway become a leading substance abuse treatment provider in Illinois,” adds Darcy.

Surviving Long-Term Unemployment: One Mother's Story

Surviving Long-Term Unemployment: One Mother's Story Filed under: Unemployment, Job Search, Economy, Food, Financial Education

*Martha Irvine/AP*Debbie Jurcak, left, a mother of three, checks out the bread at the West Suburban Community Pantry in Woodridge, Ill. Jurcak, 43, was among many Americans who lost unemployment benefits in late December.

By MARTHA IRVINE

AURORA, Ill. -- Down the road from an emergency food pantry where a small crowd waits for the chance to gather free groceries, there is a church sign that reads: "If you need help, ask God. If you don't, thank God."

Debbie Jurcak, one of those in line, will tell you that it is indeed divine help -- or, anyway, faith-based organizations -- that she and her family have relied on in recent weeks. Late last month, the federal government ended her unemployment benefits, six months after she was laid off from an administrative job.

Having passed that six-month mark, she had joined the ranks of the "long-term unemployed," a growing group of more than 1.3 Americans for whom Congress recently declined to extend benefits. It is a label that Jurcak, a former teacher with two master's degrees, never expected would apply to her.

"It's not something you want to go around talking about all the time. I think a lot of people don't share what the depth of their need is," the 43-year-old mother of three said, wiping tears from underneath her glasses as she waited for her turn at the West Suburban Community Pantry, outside Chicago.

"But there's no room for pride," she added, "because we all come to a point in our life -- whether it's financial reasons, or medical reasons, or mental health reasons, or whatever they are -- where you recognize your need for help."

Turns out, Jurcak is one of the lucky ones, or so she hopes.
After months applying for jobs, she learned just days after her visit to the pantry, that she got a customer service job, which she starts this week. It's only temporary for now and the pay is modest. But if she proves herself, there's a good chance she'll be hired permanently, she said.

Her husband Frank is working for a temp agency, driving a forklift or delivering documents for $12 an hour. He, too, is awaiting word on a full-time job, his in law enforcement.

Permanent employment would mean major changes for this family and for their children, who were on the verge of eviction after Jurcak's benefits expired last month.

But many other American parents are still struggling to find work.

A recent report from the Urban Institute found that, in an average month, there are still three times as many children living with parents who've been out of work more than six months as there were in 2007, before the recession hit. And Illinois is among the states with the highest percentage of children in that predicament -- with nearly 5 percent of them living with parents who are long-term unemployed, according to the report.

Unemployment benefits are certainly not a cure-all, said Julia Isaacs, a senior fellow at the Urban Institute, who co-authored the report. But they do help cushion the negative impact that unemployment, and resulting poverty, can have on outcomes such as school performance, she said.

*Doing Things Differently*

For the Jurcaks, it's easy now to look back and see how they would have done things differently.

But Debbie Jurcak says there was no way of knowing how bad things would get after she left a teaching job in 2009 to spend time at home with her newborn daughter, Ella, who's now 4.

In the years the followed, Frank's assignments as a commercial diver at nuclear facilities began to dwindle. Two years ago, with bills mounting, they sold their four-bedroom home in a short sale and moved their kids to a new school district.

Eventually, Frank was permanently laid off, leading him to the temporary jobs while he looked for permanent work.

Debbie, meanwhile, had gotten the administrative job in the fall of 2012, but was laid off last May when her company had to cut back. While receiving unemployment benefits, she said she constantly sought work, reasoning: "My full-time job is finding a job and taking care of my kids."

Through it all, she and Frank have tried to shield their children as best they can -- not always successfully.

Though Ella still went to preschool, she often told her parents she missed her daycare friends. Sometimes, she'd bring out her piggy bank and announce, "I have money!" The two older children, ages 13 and 16, have had an even greater sense of the growing desperation from their mom and from Frank, who is their stepdad.

"They definitely know we've been struggling," Debbie Jurcak said. She and Frank have tried to absorb as much of the negative impact as they can.

To maintain a semblance of normalcy even with money tight, for instance, they bought their kids Christmas gifts. But when the letter about unemployment benefits arrived just after the holiday, it was difficult to hide the panic.

Unable to cover January rent, the couple sought emergency aid from the Society of St. Vincent De Paul -- an organization that regularly collects clothing and household donations from residents at their apartment complex. Their church plans to help them with February's rent payment, bridging the gap from the loss of Jurcak's unemployment benefits to her first paycheck.

Even before those benefits were cut off, the couple had sold many of their household belongings at second-hand shops to help pay the bills.

Still, Jurcak's 16-year-old son Dakota, a sophomore in high school, doesn't want anyone's pity.

"I don't feel, like, sad," he said. "We're fortunate just to be where we are now. My heart goes out to all the people who don't have what we have."

*A Tight Fit*

Indeed, though their apartment is a tight fit for five people, they have a home -- no small thing in these days of extreme cold -- and food on the table. He and his siblings all have their own rooms. He sleeps in the den, using a curtain for a door. And the living room serves as a bedroom for his parents, who sleep on a pull-out sofa bed.

Debbie Jurcak has used the dining room table as her office, scouring job sites and making calls to set up interviews. She's also used her time to apply for state assistance, food stamps and state and federal medical insurance -- until they're more financially stable.

Both of her daughters have some health issues, and medical bills have been mounting, along with everything else.

Jurcak found this new job with the help of a member of the family's church, after sending out hundreds of applications, most of which received no response.

Often, she said, her education seemed to work against her.

"The impression that employers seem to have is, 'You're not going to stay,'" Jurcak said. Or she said they'd tell her, they were only looking for candidates who met the minimum requirements for the job.

"They'd say I'm over-qualified."

At the West Suburban Community Pantry, where Jurcak has gotten many of her groceries in recent months, workers say it's not unusual to see unemployed professionals, including the occasional out-of work CEO -- even as the economy improves. And always, there are families.

Volunteer Julie Benario recalls one young mom with three children who became overwhelmed each time she visited the pantry.

"She'd get in her car and cry because people were so nice to her," Benario said.

Jurcak understands. One day, hopefully soon, she said, she vows to "pay it forward" and be the one to do the giving.

She also hopes members of Congress will find a way to reinstate long-term benefits, at least until the economy is stronger. Democrats are proposing extending the benefits from six to 11 months. Republicans have questioned how to pay for that.

"I don't want to rely on my government -- and quite frankly, I'm not convinced that it's really government's role to do all that it is asked to do," Jurcak said. "But it shouldn't ignore the needs of the people either."

Her voice shook when she said "ignore."

"Maybe until you're in the situation, you don't really get it."

State Of The Union Drinking Game 2014

0
0
Good morning, America. Today is Tuesday, January 28, and you know what that means!

Spoiler alert: It means that tonight, President Barack Obama will be delivering the 2014 State of the Union address before a joint session of Congress, the Cabinet, the Supreme Court, and a few people who actually don’t have jobs, but are the most deserving of them among all those assembled.

Tonight’s big topic? Income inequality. Bummer stuff, really. Which means it’s as solid an excuse as any to get good and soused.

We want to serve as America’s gentle enabler, but we also want to “take on the big issues,” so we’ve prepared our annual State of the Union libation enhancement guide with an eye toward giving you the most substantive and informed scuppering available in the contiguous United States.

We’ve sat through way too many of these things, and we’ve read all of the advance rumors about what’s being discussed tonight, and so we hope we can offer some realistic predictions of what’s about to happen -- while accounting for the improbable and implausible, as well.

All in good fun, is how we see it, and lord knows, this never-revelatory occasion could use something of a boost in the enjoyment department. As always, however, we urge you to behave responsibly! Somebody has to! It’s going to have to be you, I’m afraid.

*What is the State Of The Union?*

Take a sip

Obama says, “The state of the union is strong.”

Obama says, “The state of the union is heading in a just and equitable direction for all Americans.”

Pound a shot

Obama says, “The state of the union...I mean, I’ve seen worse.”

Finish the bottle

Obama says, “Just got to be honest with you, folks, y’all pretty much came in at the end. Who’s up for the sort of easy comfort that many second-rate nations enjoy?”

*Hot State Of The Union Topics*

Take a sip

Obama discusses income inequality, the minimum wage, unemployment, infrastructure spending.

Take a swig

Obama discusses foreign policy goals, ongoing Iran negotiations, his “promise zone” proposal, comprehensive immigration reform.

*State Of The Union Themes*

Take a sip

“It’s time to restore the promise of economic mobility, the idea that we give our kids a better chance than the one we had.”

Take a swig

“This modest rise in the minimum wage is the least we can do, and yet it will mean so much to millions of Americans.”

Pound a shot

“Basically, if I even urge Americans to brush your teeth twice a day, the Heritage Foundation is going to come out in favor of tooth decay by 11:30 tonight.”

Finish the bottle

“We’ll never be royals. It don’t run in our blood. That kind of luxe just ain't for us. We crave a different kind of buzz.”

*Reminder of Obamacare*

Take a sip

Obama apologizes for bungled roll-out of Healthcare.gov, asserts that the law is nevertheless proceeding according to plan.

Take a swig

Obama mounts robust defense of Affordable Care Act, goes on the offensive against red-state governors who have impeded their constituents’ access to health-care options.

Pound a shot

Obama says, “I’ll be honest with you, Obamacare is TOTALLY a ruse that’s intended to lead to single payer. You got me!”

Finish the bottle

Obama starts to talk about Obamacare, and releases hundreds of puppies and kittens from hidden kennels behind the dais. “Where did all these fellas come from?” he says, adding, “Just look at their cute faces! Wow, I forgot what I was even talking about!”

*Goals for the Coming Year*

Take a sip

1. 2014 will be a “year of action” intended to end the diverging fortunes of the middle class, reversing decades-long trend of widening income inequality.
2. Will fight to end the discrimination against the long-term unemployed that’s currently keeping them from getting back in the workforce
3. Will develop a comprehensive plan to ensure that all higher-education seekers are getting real value for their tuition dollars

Take a swig

1. Will be a partner in getting “big ticket” agenda items across the goal line, with bipartisan support -- such as immigration reform, tax reform
2. Will ensure a sensible drawdown from Afghanistan that brings the majority of troops home to their family while leaving a plan in place that demonstrates America’s resoluteness in standing against radical extremists
3. Will pursue negotiations with Iran on its nuclear power program so long as the Iranian regime remains a substantive partner

Pound a shot

1. Announces major initiative to provide mental health care to those who are currently falling through the cracks
2. States that he is ready to greenlight the Keystone XL pipeline
3. Promises to aggressively fight for net neutrality

Finish the bottle

1. “I don’t know about you guys, but we should meet up in Aurora this summer and smoke up.”
2. “Grab your pitchforks, everyone, we march on Tom Perkins' palatial estate tonight!”
3. “Seriously, you guys, ‘Low Winter Sun’ was an alright show.”

*NSA Mention?*

Take a sip

Obama says, “We will have a valuable debate and come to a reasonable balance of liberty and security.”

Take a swig

Obama insists, “The powers that have been given to the NSA, while broad, have been oversold as something that law-abiding Americans should fear.”

Pound a shot

Obama says, “I’ve got clemency paperwork for Edward Snowden right here, tonight, for him to come and read.” He then places that paperwork on top of a bear trap.
