Simple Goal for Class to Make Someone’s Day Delivers Art With Heart at Community College of Aurora

Inventive project at CCA, a Colorado community college, is so successful that it’s slated to become a staple of future curriculum.

Denver, CO (PRWEB) January 29, 2014

A special project ended last month that was aimed solely at making a difference in the life of someone else through art. It was just the sort of outside-of-the-box thinking that was crazy enough to work.

And, man, did it work, so well that the idea will be repeated again this year in the next 2D design class taught by CCA faculty Alex Girard. CCA is one of the Colorado community colleges.

“You see on YouTube or on the Internet people doing acts of good while not prompted by money or jobs. So that kind of started it in my head,” Girard said in explaining the genesis behind the ‘make-a-difference’ idea. “And I did write this project for this particular group of students because they had done such a nice job throughout the semester.”

The ideas hatched by these students took on numerous forms.

Sitting on a desk in CCA’s counseling office, adding an ornate look to what was otherwise cedar-wood regularity, was a handmade book, sewn together by hand. Inside, hand-scribbled drawings were accompanied by uplifting phrases that challenged depression and low self-esteem head on:

“Most of the things you worry about never happen.”
“The only difference between a good day and a bad day is your attitude.”
“I will not compare myself to strangers on the Internet.”

The author of this book, it turns out, is CCA student Kim Huynh.

One student stood on a street corner in Aurora with selected messages written on placards. “There’s a lot of awesome in you!” one bellowed, as motorists honked horns and smiled their approval. Another member of the class went to the local library armed with 12 different bookmarks embossed with three different sayings. She clandestinely placed these pieces of 2D art in the books of library patrons who had abandoned their reading materials.

One student opened a Twitter account entitled, #JustDropIt, with a backdrop of suicide prevention in mind. By the time he was finished, several Psychiatric agencies had become followers and re-tweeted the work, which was an assemblage of his own positive messages and those written by others.

Scott Wakefield, Girard and others at Community College of Aurora often have discussed the importance of building confidence by having their students generate and execute ideas. This project afforded the possibility of changing a perspective, thought, or day of another individual in a purposeful fashion. Wakefield is chair of the Art and Design Department, which offers many fine art and graphic design classes in Denver.

“It was a great way of reaching people and having an instant idea of how it affected them,” said Gene Dillion, whose street-corner sign campaign also included the message, “Peace, Love, and Nachos” that had one commuter believing she was advertising for a local restaurant. “I think the project was very effective and interesting and eye-opening to see all these creative outlets and ideas come together, all going towards the same goal of cheering people up, brightening their day, and otherwise positively influencing their lives. This was a really great vehicle for that and one of the projects I’ve enjoyed most so far.”

One of the more intriguing ideas came from first-year student Nicholas Kim. He drew a four-panel pencil drawing in comic form and left ‘bubbles’ for the dialogue empty. He then distributed them at class and work. Kim watched from afar as people cackled to themselves while filling out the comic page, which accomplished the target goal for the assignment. There was a wide-ranging response in the tone of the pages he then collected. A sample dialogue:

Panel One: “I am the most evil thing online! I live to make others angry and jelly …”
Panel Two: You know me all too well, for I am the one who caused you to post a whining Facebook status . I am …’
Panel Three: … “a troll!”
Panel Four: “You hurt my feelings! Just wait until all my Facebook friends hear about this! We are going to so blog about this!!”

“It was pretty funny,” Kim said of some the finished products he collected after watching them being created.

Students gave oral presentations to Girard on the final day of class about their methodology coming up with their projects, some of which also included desk calendars for co-workers, a new way to access course evaluations in the students’ online access point to the college website, and the use of ‘positive’ street graffiti via sticker messages.

Girard asked the students about their biggest challenges and highlights of taking the assignments from concept to execution. Nearly everyone seemed jazzed about what they’d done and seen.

“I was really impressed,” Girard said. “I talked about examples and showed them things that lived in the world but did give them completely free reign and was really impressed with some of the really unique and personal ideas. I especially like that some of them already are talking about wanting to do it again or keeping the Twitter account going. I’m really excited that it’s living beyond the classroom.”

“Chopping the Onion” aims to help victims forgive others, love themselves.

Denver (PRWEB) January 29, 2014

Dusana Michaels became a victim of incest as a child, but “victim” is hardly a word to call her now. Michaels has dedicated her life to overcoming the trauma she faced at an early age by addressing issues one by one and empowering others to do the same.

“My perpetrator took my childhood,” Michaels said. “But my adulthood belongs to me.”

Michaels’ new book “Chopping the Onion” is one resilient woman’s journey through recovery after enduring the unthinkable. The Aurora, Col., resident teaches about practicing forgiveness and finding self-worth without going into graphic details of individual occurrences.

The author’s abuse is, unfortunately, not an isolated incident: The National Center for Victims of Crime reports 20 percent of girls and five percent of boys are victims of childhood sexual abuse; 75 percent of adolescents who were victimized were perpetrated upon by someone they know well.

Michaels hopes offering her perspective will help other victims of abuse know that they are not alone and that recovery is possible.

Cut Off the NSA's Juice

$

The National Security Agency depends on huge computers that guzzle electricity in the service of the surveillance state. For the NSA's top executives, maintaining a vast flow of juice to keep Big Brother nourished is essential -- and any interference with that flow is unthinkable.

But interference isn't unthinkable. And in fact, it may be doable.

Grassroots activists have begun to realize the potential to put the NSA on the defensive in nearly a dozen states where the agency is known to be running surveillance facilities, integral to its worldwide snoop operations.

Organizers have begun to push for action by state legislatures to impede the electric, water and other services that sustain the NSA's secretive outposts.

Those efforts are farthest along in the state of Washington, where a new bill in the legislature -- the Fourth Amendment Protection Act -- is a statutory nightmare for the NSA. The agency has a listening post in Yakima, in the south-central part of the state.

The bill throws down a challenge to the NSA, seeking to block all state support for NSA activities violating the Fourth Amendment. For instance, that could mean a cutoff of electricity or water or other state-government services to the NSA site. And the measure also provides for withholding other forms of support, such as research and partnerships with state universities.

Here's the crux of the bill: "It is the policy of this state to refuse material support, participation, or assistance to any federal agency which claims the power, or with any federal law, rule, regulation, or order which purports to authorize, the collection of electronic data or metadata of any person pursuant to any action not based on a warrant that particularly describes the person, place, and thing to be searched or seized."

If the windup of that long sentence has a familiar ring, it should. The final dozen words are almost identical to key phrases in the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

In recent days, more than 15,000 people have signed a petition expressing support for the legislation. Launched by RootsAction.org, the petition is addressed to the bill's two sponsors in the Washington legislature -- Republican Rep. David Taylor, whose district includes the NSA facility in Yakima, and Democrat Luis Moscoso from the Seattle area.

Meanwhile, a similar bill with the same title has just been introduced in the Tennessee legislature -- taking aim at the NSA's center based in Oak Ridge, Tenn. That NSA facility is a doozy: with several hundred scientists and computer specialists working to push supercomputers into new realms of mega-surveillance capacities.

A new coalition, OffNow, is sharing information about model legislation. The group also points to known NSA locations in other states including Utah (in Bluffdale), Texas (San Antonio), Georgia (Augusta), Colorado (Aurora), Hawaii (Oahu) and West Virginia (Sugar Grove), along with the NSA's massive headquarters at Fort Meade in Maryland. Grassroots action and legislative measures are also stirring in several of those states.

One of the key organizations in such efforts is the Bill of Rights Defense Committee, where legal fellow Matthew Kellegrew told me that the OffNow coalition "represents the discontent of average people with ... business-as-usual failure to rein in out-of-control domestic spying by the NSA and other federal departments like the FBI. It is a direct, unambiguous response to a direct, unambiguous threat to our civil liberties."

In the process -- working to counter the bipartisan surveillance-state leadership coming from the likes of President Obama, House Speaker John Boehner, the House Intelligence Committee's chair Mike Rogers and the Senate Intelligence Committee's chair Dianne Feinstein -- activists urging a halt to state-level support for the NSA include people who disagree on other matters but are determined to undermine the Big Brother hierarchies of both parties.

"By working together to tackle the erosion of the Fourth Amendment presented by bulk data collection," Kellegrew said, "people from across partisan divides are resurrecting the lost art of collaboration and in the process, rehabilitating the possibility of a functional American political dialogue denied to the people by dysfunction majority partisan hackery."

From another vantage point, this is an emerging faceoff between reliance on cynical violence and engagement in civic nonviolence.

Serving the warfare state and overall agendas for U.S. global dominance to the benefit of corporate elites, the NSA persists in doing violence to the Constitution's civil-liberties amendments -- chilling the First, smashing the Fourth and end-running the Fifth.

Meanwhile, a nascent constellation of movements is striving to thwart the surveillance state, the shadowy companion of perpetual war.

This is a struggle for power over what kind of future can be created for humanity.

It's time to stop giving juice to Big Brother.

James Holmes returned to the courtroom on Monday, two years after he allegedly shot into an audience at a movie theater in Aurora, Colo., killing 12 people and injuring 70. A Centennial, Colo. court is trying to determine whether Holmes should receive a second psychiatric evaluation, as he is pleading not guilty by reason of insanity.

Holmes' mental health was the catalyst for Colorado legislators to pass some of the most wide-ranging mental health-care legislation in the United States. Holmes, who is suspected of having an extreme case of bipolar disorder, slipped through the cracks of Colorado's mental health-care system, leading to an egregious loss of life, according to The New York Times. With its revamped system, Colorado aims to catch unstable patients before they become a danger to society. Read more...
