A Definitive Ranking Of 25 Classic Disney Villains

$
0
0
When the latest trailer for "Maleficent" called its title character "Disney's greatest villain," we couldn't help but scratch our un-horned heads. Maleficent is great and all. She's got the whole "evil as other" archetype working in her favor and those horns are really so McQueen, but there are a TON of antagonists who could easily contest that title. Now, in celebration of all that is evil, we bring you a complete ranking of 25 classic Disney villains.

*25. Edgar Balthazar, "The Aristocats"*
Edgar Balthazar plots to eliminate Duchess and her aristo-kittens, when he learns that his boss Madame Adelaide de Bonne Famille will be leaving them her fortune. It's unclear exactly why Edgar thinks he as Bonne Famille's butler would logically or legally be next in line for the inheritance. Nonetheless, he sets off on attempting to ship the cats off to Timbuktu, and ends up getting shipped to Timbuktu himself (read: is defeated by a bunch of little cats).

*24. Clayton, "Tarzan"*
Intended as a statement on poachers and imperialism, Clayton mostly comes off as a lazy mix of Gaston and Cruella (bro-y bravado + animal cruelty). In an alternate universe, he later gave up hunting to be a sportswriter for ESPN.

*23. Prince John, "Robin Hood"*
As greedy as Prince John is, at the end of the day, he's an anthropomorphic cat with mommy issues. Yeah, he could probably eat you alive, but the oversize coat and crown mostly make him look like a stuffed animal playing dress up. This is why someone wearing little tights can steal from you, Prince John. Do better.

*22. Si and Am, "Lady and the Tramp"*
Cats verses dogs is basically as iconic an archetype as good verses evil. In hopes of being manipulative and terrible, Si and Am are basically responsible for all of Lady's troubles in the film, an effort best demonstrated by their slightly offensive song of cultural appropriation and mischief.

*21. Madame Medusa, "The Rescuers"*
At certain points in "The Rescuers," Madame Medusa definitely comes off as a bumbling idiot. For a lady who has somehow managed to tame not one, but two crocodiles to be her pets while developing an impressively nimble affinity for water skiing, you might think Medusa would have a certain cleverness about her ... although apparently not enough to avoid being tripped up by a couple of well-prepared mice.

*20. Man, "Bambi"*
Yeah, he's an off-screen villain, but he kills Bambi's mother, you guys! Runner Up: the Forest Fire.

*19. Madam Mim, "Sword in the Stone"*
Despite the fact that she is really only a tertiary character, Madam Mim makes a major impression in "Sword in the Stone." She looks tiny enough to be punted across a soccer field, but her powers supposedly rival those of Merlin. Also, she easily transforms into a massive dragon.

*18. Foulfellow & Gideon, "Pinocchio"*
It's really not very hard to trick a puppet into being an actor and / or going on roller coasters at a place called "Pleasure Island." Foulfellow and Gideon are not so much powerful as much as vaguely clever. But a fox and a cat drinking beer and using a cane as a stylistic flourish are not intended to be scary, so much as representations of the lingering temptation presented to all [DEL: wooden :DEL] young children.

*17. Shere Khan, "The Jungle Book"*
Shere Khan is a known man-eater, who is similar to Hannibal Lecter in that he is especially articulate and polite in dealing with his victims. To be fair, he hates men, because they killed his entire family, but Shere Khan's cold, calculating methodology verges on sociopathy. Bonus points for having an affably precocious snake as his sidekick.

*16. Governor Ratcliffe, "Pocahontas"*
For someone wearing pigtails, Governor Ratcliffe was really not nice. In an obsessive search for gold, he exemplifies bigotry and xenophobia, while pillaging the land of Pochantas and their people, who are super peaceful and really just want to paint with all the colors of the wind. Speaking of colors, that outfit was a little flashy for someone who historically would have aligned with Puritanism.

*15. Captain Hook, "Peter Pan"*
Hook hates children -- which, when a green-tight-wearing child has chopped off your hand and fed it to a crocodile, you're allowed to do. Apparently Hook's creators intended him to be a "black-hearted man," but he mostly just comes off as intensely silly. How could someone with such voluminous hair be evil?

*14. Ratigan, "The Great Mouse Detective"*
Okay, Ratigan is awesome because 1) He is the anthropomorphic rat version of James Moriarty from "Sherlock Holmes," 2) He wears a cape, 3) He is a RAT that has a PET CAT.

*13. Shan-Yu, "Mulan"*
Shan-Yu is big and scary and ruthless enough, but everyone knows the real antagonist in "Mulan" is the patriarchy. Don't send someone daughters, when they ask for sons and all that. In terms of powers, Shan-Yu is technically mortal, but appears to boast super human strength and enough endurance to emerge from an avalanche basically unscathed. But this Genghis Khan impersonator is really more of a symbol of the effects of war and constrictions of Mulan's social milieu, both as a civilian and and a warrior.

*12. Maleficent, "Sleeping Beauty"*
Maleficent has a seemingly unlimited arsenal of powers and really only curses Princess Aurora, because she's not invited to a christening. (Christenings are boring, so she should have been thankful that she didn't have to sit through a royal baby bath, but alas.) Being excluded is a major impetus for Maleficent's evil. When you're marginalized for having great cheek bones / being green, it only makes sense to lash out at a overprivileged infant.

*11. The Queen of Hearts, "Alice in Wonderland"*
For a tiny, overweight person, the Queen of Hearts is shockingly powerful. She dominates the King of Hearts, seemingly as a reflection of the power of the queen and king in the game of chess. Screaming to decapitate randos as soon as she starts losing a game of flamingo croquet, the Queen of Hearts is pretty much like a bizarro version of the main Heather in "Heathers," if she let herself go and rose to power in a magical land.

*10. Claude Frollo, "The Hunchback of Notre Dame*
"The Hunchback of Notre Dame" was definitively dark for a Disney film, the kind of thing your mom maybe wished she didn't take you to see in theaters ... and a lot of those sexualized evil undertones / general hellfire was perpetuated by Claude Frollo. Don't be fooled by the stupid hat, the Minister of Justice thought nothing of locking a baby in an attic and considering burning down "all of Paris" just to find a gypsy that he has a crush on.

*9. Hades, "Hercules"*
Hades is so campy, it's easy to forget he's the god of the underworld, acting as Hercules' sworn enemy. Really, it's a challenge to have any character be voiced by James Woods and still make them seem genuinely malevolent, but it works. Despite his grand plot to overthrow Zeus' throne, Hades takes the shape of a trickster-type character with serious anger management issues. He also gets points for having a theme song that sounds like it cold have been written by Mumford and Sons.

*8. Gaston, "Beauty And The Beast"*
Gaston is basically the quintessential bro, which really makes him more aggressively intolerable than horrifying. He works out too much (or at least eats too many raw eggs?) and thinks he is literally "the greatest hunter in the world." Interestingly enough, he doesn't seem super evil until much later in the film, when he decides to deliberately incite hysteria and lead a pitchfork mob to "Kill The Beast." #YOLO #ragespiral #comeatmebro

*7. Queen Grimhilde a.k.a. The Evil Queen, "Snow White"*
The Evil Queen is so iconic that she doesn't really need a name. Probably the best part of her backstory is the frivolity of her Snow White vendetta. She literally destroys some chick's life, because she wants to be the fairest of them all. Despite the fact that a boyfriend and / or manservant with a penchant for flattery could have avoided the whole mess she caused, the Evil Queen and her penciled-on eyebrows made for a sleek and chilling villain.

*6. Jafar, "Aladdin"*
The Royal Vizier of Agrabah is an amoral psychopath. With no understanding of remorse and a penchant for pure evil, he is perhaps more consistently evil than his villainous brethren. Essentially, his entire goal is to trick Jasmine into being his slave queen, only so that he can kill her and take the throne. Yet, despite all of the unabated maleficence, there is something vaguely comical about his sense of humor and enduring flair for sarcasm, executed flawlessly with the help of his sidekick parrot Iago.

*5. Lady Tremaine a.k.a. Wicked Stepmother, "Cinderella"*
No super powers here, just one super mean lady. Much like The Abominable Snowman, the wicked stepmother would probably have been much nicer if that dress had a less aggressive neck line (itchy!). She never abuses Cinderella physically, but the extent to which she harasses her psychologically gets pretty creative. Although, minus the whole forcing-her-to-clean-cinders thing, Lady Tremaine had at least some right to be annoyed that Cindy made her own daughters seem even more shrill.

*4. Chernabog, "Fantasia"*
Chernabog is just, like, literally the stuff nightmares are made of (especially if you were under the age of 8, when you first watched "Fantasia"). His appearance is somewhat brief, but it comes at the climax of the film, represented by what is easily the most terrifyingly sinister theme song of all the Disney villains combined. Basically, the big bog would win versus anyone in a cage fight.

*3. Ursula, "The Little Mermaid"*
The sea witch of Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Mermaid" (upon which Ursula is based) is merely an enabler in Ariel's eventual tragedy, whereas Disney's voluptuous reworking comes complete with two eel sidekicks, a self-serving agenda and an evil laugh heftier than a bowl of New England clam chowder. Of course, she tricks Ariel into a terrifically unfair deal, but at least our little mermaid didn't end up turning into those ambiguous little sea bugs that she just calls "Poor Unfortunate Souls."

*2. Cruella de Vil, "101 Dalmatians"*
While demons are most often associated with head-spinning and excessive vomit, Cruella de Vil did her best impression of a hell beast, while managing to appear just as fabulous as a skeletal high-power fashion editor. She isn't a calculating villain like the rest in the Disney canon, just an impulsively stylish lady, who really doesn't mind skinning 101 puppies to look good.

*1. Scar, "The Lion King"*
Scar is obviously resentful of Mufasa and Simba's ownership of the throne, but when he finally murders Mufasa via stampede, banishes Simba via manipulation and gains control of Pride Rock, he actually just destroys the land. Even his Hamlet doppelgänger King Claudius was less ruthless than that. Really, Scar is just full-throttle evil, but at the very least he was elegant enough to providemusical foreshadowing. Really just never trust a lion with an English accent. Reported by Huffington Post 3 days ago.

If You Only Watch The State Of The Union For An Excuse To Get Drunk, You Should Read This

Hello, America. It's Tuesday, Jan. 28, and you know what that means!

President Barack Obama will be delivering his 2014 State of the Union address before a joint session of Congress, the Cabinet, the Supreme Court, and a few people who actually don’t have jobs, but are the most deserving of them among all those assembled.

Tonight’s big topic? Income inequality. Bummer stuff, really. Which means it’s as solid an excuse as any to get good and soused.

We want to serve as America’s gentle enabler, but we also want to “take on the big issues,” so we’ve prepared our annual State of the Union libation enhancement guide with an eye toward giving you the most substantive and informed scuppering available in the contiguous United States.

We’ve sat through way too many of these things, and we’ve read all of the advance rumors about what’s being discussed tonight, and so we hope we can offer some realistic predictions of what’s about to happen -- while accounting for the improbable and implausible, as well.

All in good fun, is how we see it, and lord knows, this never-revelatory occasion could use something of a boost in the enjoyment department. As always, however, we urge you to behave responsibly! Somebody has to! It’s going to have to be you, I’m afraid.

West Virginians Still Worried About Their Water 20 Days After Chemical Spill

$
0
0
Some West Virginians affected by the chemical spill earlier this month are still not drinking their tap water -- and donations of bottled water are starting to dry up.

"We could bring 100 to 200 gallons of water to an area, and it could be gone in an hour. People are coming and getting it that quickly," Dustin White, an organizer with the Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition, told The Huffington Post. "There are still a lot of people who are afraid to drink the water."

White is one of many volunteers with the West Virginia Clean Water Hub, which has been gathering donations of water and cleaning supplies, and delivering them to people in the affected areas since the Elk River spill was first detected Jan. 9. While some water distribution centers remain open, White said, they can be difficult to access for those living in remote areas or lacking transportation.

White spoke this week from his father's home in James Creek, which is in Boone County. "Boone's aid was pretty much stopped the day they said they could turn the water back on," said White. His family has seen just one Red Cross truck, he said, and it was distributing only one package of water per household. Meanwhile, he said the water in his father's house still smells sweet, like licorice, and causes itching and burning when used to shower.

It's not surprising that people are still concerned about the water now, nearly three weeks after the spill from a tank belonging to Freedom Industries was discovered. Even though the formal advisory against drinking the water has been lifted, Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin told residents last week that it was up to them to decide whether or not to drink the water. A day later, Freedom Industries revealed that a second, previously undisclosed chemical, PPH, also spilled into the water, along with the chemical 4-methylcyclohexane methanol (MCHM).

This Monday, the state Department of Environmental Protection announced that, according to Freedom Industries, the total volume of chemicals that spilled is higher than previously disclosed -- 10,000 gallons, rather than the 7,500-gallon initial estimate.

Given the ongoing problems, Tomblin asked the Federal Emergency Management Agency to modify the emergency declaration for the region so that agencies and nonprofits still providing relief can be reimbursed. The state's congressional delegation also sent a letter to FEMA Wednesday, requesting additional federal support and noting that since Freedom Industries has declared bankruptcy, there "seems to be little hope that these costs can be recouped by the party found responsible for this event."

The one positive story to come from the water crisis, said Elise Keaton, executive of the Keeper of the Mountain Foundation, is the power of volunteers. She said donations from across the United States and the world totaled close to $7,000, and were used to purchase and distribute water in more distant affected areas. The official water distribution stations, "by and large, only served the populated areas, which in West Virginia is missing a huge portion of the population," she said.

Aurora Lights, a group from Morgantown, also organized shipments of donations to the affected region. Jen Osha and Hannah Spencer have coordinated that effort, sending 11 shipments of water, cleaning supplies and liquid baby formula in the last three weeks. On Sunday, they packed a dump truck with more than 1,600 gallons of water –- "everything we could possibly stuff in the truck," Osha said –- and sent it to Seth, W.Va., about three hours away. Local youth groups, a veterinary hospital, small businesses, church groups and schools have all chipped in. "It's a positive story in the midst of a crisis, how people are working together," said Osha.

The need does not appear likely to go away anytime soon, said Keaton, as "a lot of folks are really hesitant" about drinking the water. Many have told her they don't plan to drink the tap water again. Officials will have to produce "a lot of demonstrable evidence" to prove to people that it's safe again, she said. "If we can't produce that, that's of course a bigger issue."

That may prove difficult, according to those on the ground. "People don't trust the information they're getting anymore, because this whole thing has been a blunder," said White. Reported by Huffington Post 3 days ago.

Terror Suspect Jamshid Muhtorov Challenges NSA Surveillance Program

$

DENVER (AP) — Using evidence obtained under the National Security Agency's warrantless surveillance program violates a terror suspect's constitutional protection against unreasonable search and seizure, the suspect argued Wednesday in a court document filed with help from the American Civil Liberties Union.

In the motion filed in federal court in Denver, Jamshid Muhtorov also requested that prosecutors disclose more about how the surveillance law was used in his case. Muhtorov denies the terror charges he faces. "We've learned over the last few months that the NSA has implemented the law in the broadest possible way, and that the rules that supposedly protect the privacy of innocent people are weak and riddled with exceptions," Jameel Jaffer, the ACLU's deputy legal director, said in a statement Wednesday. The ACLU called the filing the first of its kind.

The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a call seeking comment.

The challenge had been expected after the Justice Department in October said it intended to use information gleaned from one of the NSA's warrantless surveillance programs against Muhtorov. It was the first time the department had made such a disclosure.

The Supreme Court has so far turned aside challenges to the law on the grounds that people who bring such lawsuits have no evidence they are being targeted.

Muhtorov was accused in 2012 of providing material support to an Uzbek terrorist organization active in Afghanistan.

According to Wednesday's motion, Muhtorov was targeted by the Uzbek government because of his work with human rights groups in his homeland. He fled and resettled in Aurora, Colo., in 2007, as a political refugee with the help of the United Nations and the U.S. government. He became a legal permanent U.S. resident.

Muhtorov was arrested Jan. 21, 2012, in Chicago with about $2,800 in cash, two shrink-wrapped iPhones and an iPad as well as a GPS device. In March 2012, his attorney, federal public defender Brian Leedy, said at a court hearing that Muhtorov denied the allegations and had been headed to the Uzbekistan region to visit family, including a sister who remains imprisoned in that country. Eric Holder Regrets Not Releasing Photos of Slain Sandy Hook Children On January 29th Attorney General Eric Holder said the public would have pushed Congress to support gun control if the photographs of the slain children at Sandy Hook Elementary had been released.

According to Main Justice, Holder said December 14, 2012 was "the worst day that [he] had as Attorney General."

Holder continued:

[If] the American people, legislators, [and] members of Congress had the ability with me that day – to walk through the classrooms and see the caked blood... if they had seen the crime scene photos of those little angels – I suspect that the outcome of the effort we mounted last year would have been different.

Holder did not mention that the background check bill the administration supported would not have prevented the heinous crime at Sandy Hook Elementary because Adam Lanza stole his guns. Nor would it have prevented the Aurora theater attack, the DC Navy Yard attack, the murder at LAX, or the more recent murders at The Mall in Columbia – in all four of these incidents the gunmen submitted to and passed firearm purchase background checks.

The question now is this: Will Holder advocate the release of crime scene photos the next time a gunman opens fire in a gun-free zone?

Denver archbishop to say Mass for Broncos’ Super Bowl team

Denver, Colo., Jan 30, 2014 / 02:04 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Archbishop Samuel Aquila of Denver will say Mass for the Denver Broncos in New Jersey the night before the Feb. 2 championship game of the National Football League.

“I have been edified by the example of many NFL athletes and coaches and their families who make the effort throughout the football season to attend Sunday Mass,”  Archbishop Aquila said.

“I am sure many people are wondering what I will say to the Broncos in my homily, but all I can say is that the Holy Spirit will guide me as He wishes. What I do know, is that during the game I will be cheering for a Broncos victory!”

Archbishop Aquila said that Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio and his wife Linda invited him to attend the game with their family, and say Mass for the team. The Mass will be said Saturday night for players and coaches at the Jersey City, N.J. hotel where the team is staying.

The archbishop said he is “a long-time Broncos fan,” dating back to his time as a student at the University of Colorado-Boulder in the early 1970s.

“Even when I was Bishop of Fargo, I followed and rooted for the Broncos.”

The archbishop told the Denver Post that the opportunity to be with the Broncos was “a great gift.”

“We pray for protection, good sportsmanship, for their gifts to exceed. We place it all in the hands of the Lord.”

Jack Del Rio said at a Jan. 28 media conference he was “very appreciative” of Archbishop Aquila and “glad that he’s going to be out here with us,” the Denver Post reports.

Del Rio said that at difficult times in his career “I’ve leaned harder – more fervently – on my faith.”

The Del Rios have long been active in charitable work in Colorado, and in October 2012, they helped organize a Coats for Kids giveaway with the Knights of Columbus and Catholic Athletes for Christ.

Linda Del Rio met Pope Francis in an October visit to the Vatican, and presented him with a signed Broncos football.

The Broncos’ spiritual needs are usually served by Fr. Philip Steele, president of Regis Jesuit High School in Aurora, Colo. He normally says a private Mass for the football team on weekends when they have home games, the Denver Catholic Register reports. The Jesuit community at Regis has served the Broncos for over 20 years.

Meanwhile in Washington, Fr. Tom Belleque of St. Louise Parish in Bellevue normally says Mass for Catholic members of the Seattle Seahawks.

Greg Magnoni, communications director for the Archdiocese of Seattle, told CNA Jan. 29 that Fr. Belleque “is not planning on attending the Super Bowl, but I’m sure he’d be open to the airfare and a ticket to the game if you're offering.”

Magnoni voiced hope that Archbishop Aquila would also celebrate Mass for Catholic members of the Seahawks, and said Seattle is enthusiastic about a Seahawks appearance in the Super Bowl.

“I’ve never seen our community so excited and so united around a single event. This team has galvanized a sense of community spirit throughout western Washington and the Northwest that is unique in my experience.”

“I expect the team to be welcomed home in one of the biggest celebrations this city has ever witnessed regardless of the game’s outcome,” he added, noting that over 30,000 Seahawks fans lined the route to the Seattle airport to cheer team members as they departed for New Jersey.

5 steps to preventing heart disease

*5 steps to preventing heart disease*

The American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology caused a ruckus late last year when they issued new guidelines that, by some measures, would double the number of people who should take a cholesterol-lowering drug. Lost in the ensuing uproar was a less controversial, but in some ways more far-reaching, recommendation from the same organizations: a renewed emphasis on the power of lifestyle changes in preventing and treating heart disease.

“We did perhaps the most comprehensive review of the effects of diet and exercise on heart disease ever, and concluded that there really is good evidence that it helps and that it’s doable,” said Robert Eckel, M.D., co-chairman of the guideline-writing committee and professor of medicine at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora.

Another advantage of focusing on lifestyle: The heart-protective effects go beyond cholesterol reduction. You can lower your blood pressure, lose weight, and perhaps reduce inflammation in the arteries, a risk factor increasingly linked to heart attacks and strokes. In fact, our medical experts say that making lifestyle changes can eliminate the need for drugs.

And it’s not just the new guidelines that recognize the benefit of heart-healthy habits. Medicare is so impressed with Dr. Dean Ornish’s Program for Reversing Heart Disease—an aggressive plan that combines a very low-fat vegetarian diet with a tailored exercise program, meditation, smoking cessation, and group therapy—that it now covers the treatment for those with diagnosed heart disease.

Even better: Although concerted efforts such as the Ornish program can be quite effective, growing research shows that more modest (and less rigid) steps, such as the five we highlight here, yield important health benefits—and show that it’s never too late to make changes.

*How it helps:* People who exercise regularly have a 30 to 40 percent lower risk of heart disease than those who don’t, the research suggests. Exercise strengthens your heart muscle at the same time that it controls inflammation and helps keep weight, cholesterol, and blood pressure at healthy levels. Strength training improves heart health, too, because more muscle equals a faster metabolism, which makes it easier to keep weight off.

*What to do:* It doesn’t take a lot: Aim for 75 minutes of vigorous exercise a week (such as two Zumba classes or jogging at a 7-mph pace) or 2.5 hours of moderately intense activity (equal to walking at 4 mph), which comes out to 30 minutes a day. Even just standing up can help: Recent research suggests that prolonged sitting lowers levels of HDL (good) cholesterol, raises artery-clogging triglycerides, and decreases the insulin sensitivity that boosts the risk of type 2 diabetes. See our recent of reviews of treadmill desks as well as ellipticals, spin bikes, treadmills, and rowers.*How it helps:* Vegetables and fruit, whole grains, nuts, and beans have each been linked to a healthier heart. Those foods are high in protective nutrients, such as potassium and fiber, and free of or very low in saturated fat. And those are the same nutrients that are plentiful in the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet, which was highlighted in the new guidelines and can lower heart-disease risk by 18 percent, research shows. And a recent Harvard University study found that people who eat eight servings of fruit and vegetables daily—especially dark-green vegetables, orange fruit and vegetables, and citrus fruit—have a 17 percent lower risk of heart disease compared with those who consume two servings.

*What to do:* Make plant foods and fish the centerpiece of your meals. When you do eat meat or poultry, stick to 3-to-4-ounce portions and choose lean cuts. Include a variety of fruit and vegetables with a host of colors. That ensures that you’ll get the complete array of nutrients that have been linked to good health. Research has found that it’s the full complement of those nutrients, perhaps working together, that explains why eating whole foods is better than taking supplements of individual nutrients. In addition, replace saturated fat, such as butter, with canola, olive oil, and other unsaturated oils. (See our advice on healthier spreads.)

*How it helps:* Some research suggests that emotional stress can be almost as bad for your heart as more familiar risk factors, such as high blood pressure. Negative emotions cause the release of hormones that can threaten your heart. People in rocky relationships, for example, are more prone to heart disease. And those with stressful jobs are more likely to have high blood pressure and, if they return to work too soon after a first heart attack, to have a second one.

*What to do:* Develop your own portfolio of coping strategies. Exercise helps in part because it appears to reduce levels of stress hormones and can keep your blood pressure down when you’re under duress. Yoga and tai chi are particularly good options because they lower blood pressure and heart rate. And be sure to schedule some time each day to unwind, whether it’s with meditation, massage, or music.

*How it helps:* Moderate drinking can raise a low HDL (good) cholesterol level and reduces the risk of death from heart disease by about 25 percent. It may also help prevent type 2 diabetes and ischemic strokes, the kind caused by blood clots.

*What to do:* It doesn’t seem to matter much what kind of alcohol you consume, as long as you keep it to two drinks a day for men or one a day for women. The benefits appear to be highest among people at increased risk of heart disease, notably men older than 40 and women older than 50. If you don’t drink, though, don’t start.

*How it helps: * Smokers are two to four times more likely to develop heart disease than nonsmokers. But once you quit, you can eventually lower your risk to that of someone who has never smoked.

*What to do:* The most successful strategies for most people include counseling, nicotine-replacement products, or both. Those products are most helpful for the first two to three months of quitting, when the risk of a relapse is greatest. Using them for longer than that should be done only under the supervision of your doctor, because there is a risk of becoming addicted to the replacements themselves. See our advice on how to stop smoking.-*Read more about how to prevent and treat heart disease and our Best Buy Drugs recommendations for drugs to lower your  cholesterol levels and blood pressure levels.  *
