The Label Printers Wins Environmental Awards

The Label Printers has won two Environmental Awards - TLMI's Environmental Leadership Award, and the state of Illinois' Governor's Sustainability Award. The Label Printers has won two prestigious awards for their efforts in making the company's operations more environmentally sound and sustainable. The company has won TLMI's (Tag and Label Manufacturers Institute) Environmental Leadership Award for the second time in a row (the first time a company has done so), and the State of Illinois' Governor's Sustainability Award - also for the second time in a row.

Bill Kane, Chief Executive of The Label Printers discussed the importance of the company's sustainability efforts. "Generally speaking - businesses should do their part to improve their company's "ecological footprint". Number 1 - it's just plain good for us and our planet to reduce and reuse resources. Number 2 - if you look at it from a business standpoint and ask yourself, can we save money? Possibly - maybe even probably. But that's not the point. Customers demand that their suppliers find ways to conserve resources, to use more efficient and cost effective packaging. And we need to be responsive to that."

TLMI explains that their "prestigious Environmental Leadership Awards recognize member companies that have consistently demonstrated a commitment to progressive environmental practices across a range of areas including solid waste reduction, recycling, waste or energy recovery, the implementation of new 'clean' technology and/or processes, and the implementation of an education program.""This is TLMI's 11th year in presenting these awards and recognizing leaders in the implementation of environmental awareness and best sustainability practices in our industry," commented Calvin Frost, chair of TLMI's Environmental Committee. "Sustainability is a central issue in our marketplace and I applaud all the companies who submitted award entries for consideration this year." The Converter Award for Environmental Leadership was given to The Label Printers, a company that continues to build an environmental culture throughout their entire organization. This is the company's second year in winning the award and once again demonstrating a reduction in waste and energy consumption year over year. It has also established best practices that demonstrate an ongoing commitment to sustainability. The company's "Go Green Save Green and Earn Green" program positions it as a true leader in the industry."

"The Governor's Sustainability Award is presented to organizations in Illinois that have demonstrated a commitment to environmental excellence through outstanding and innovative sustainability practices that will also save money and help the economy." Said David Thomas, ISTC [Illinois Sustainable Technology Center] Interim Director, "In working for a greener tomorrow, these businesses and organizations not only preserve our resources, protect our environment, reduce their costs and increase their competitiveness, they also help develop more sustainable technologies and become our greatest allies in the diffusion of new ideas and new attitudes about how business is done in Illinois."

Twenty-seven Illinois companies and organizations were honored for their significant achievements in protecting the environment, helping sustain the future, and improving the economy. The Governor's Sustainability Awards were presented by the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center (ISTC) during a ceremony in Peoria. ISTC is a unit of the Prairie Research Institute at the University of Illinois.

Since 1987, ISTC has presented Governors awards to organizations in Illinois that have demonstrated a commitment to environmental excellence through outstanding and innovative sustainability practices. Any Illinois public or private organization is eligible to apply for the award. Winners are selected through a rigorous process of review and examination by ISTC technical assistance experts. This year 27 organizations received Governor's Awards and 14 received honorable mention awards.

The "Go Green, Save Green, and Earn Green"/L.I.F.E. Team is proud of what they and the company have accomplished in just three years. George Tommasi (Director of Human Resources, The Label Printer's Illinois EPA Compliance Representative, and the L.I.F.E. team leader) says that he was very impressed that TLP won the TLMI award two years in a row, which is the first time that has happened. He said "It made me feel like we really had a significant impact." Tommasi and his team members Gina Ries, Quality Assurance Supervisor and Dawn Tesch, Purchasing Expediter, all agreed that both of the awards were a testament to the hard work of TLP's employees.

Tesch spoke about the company's "Take Stock for Education" program (which was included in the submission materials for both awards) saying, "I thought it was nice that [TSfE] stood out to the people deciding about the awards. We're very proud of that program." Ries was particularly pleased about their experiences at the Governor's Award this year. "There were more people at the awards, more displays - and more people stopped by our display table. They were impressed with what we had done - and that recognition was nice. I was especially pleased with the remarks of one gentleman who said, 'You guys really get it.' That was special."

The team's pleasure at these awards is matched by their commitment to sustainability and their focus on the customer. Says Ries, "We're always looking for continuous improvement. A good example of that would be our VOCs [volatile organic compound emissions] - reducing that is a long term process. But we've been continuously reducing it since we put our stake in the ground in 2010, and we'll keep finding ways to reduce it further." Adds Tesch, "We also continue to add goals and categories [products]. We hit our solid waste goal in the first year of the program."

Lori Campbell, Chief of Operations, points out "I'm very proud of the L.I.F.E. team and our company. The "Go Green" program just gets better every year. It's really become an important program with a great deal of substance, in a very short time." Campbell feels that winning both awards has set the company apart in a very positive way. "Lots of companies talk about being "sustainable" and "environmentally friendly" - but these awards demonstrate that our people walk the talk. And that means something to us and to our customers."

The Label Printers is a Certified Member of TLMI's L.I.F.E. program.

The Label Printers is a member of NASPO (North American Security Products Organization), CACP (Coalition Against Counterfeiting and Piracy), TLMI (Tag and Label Manufacturers Institute) and the FTA (Flexographic Technical Association).

About the Tag and Label Manufacturers Institute, Inc.:
TLMI, located in Gloucester, Massachusetts, is a member-driven association strongly committed to providing business solutions that enhance the prosperity of its members and the narrow web tag, label, and packaging industries. The organization's vision is to be the premier member-driven association for the label and packaging industry.

TLMI's goal in creating the L.I.F.E. Program was to offer an audited certification process tailored specifically to the narrow web printing and converting industry. Examples of elements that companies address in undergoing the L.I.F.E. certification process include the recycle-compatibility of adhesives; the source and destination of liner materials and how narrow web companies are driving recycling programs for these materials; and material construction light-weighting (adopting thinner constructions that generate less waste). Front office issues are also addressed such as total energy utilization, where that energy is coming from and what a business is doing to actively reduce its overall carbon footprint.
In addition to the L.I.F.E. program, TLMI offers their members a wide range of reports that focus on key industry indices, real-time economic analysis, and benchmarking metrics - these include a Financial Benchmarking/Ratio Analysis, Compensation Analysis, and Quarterly Trends.
TLMI has grown from an original group of 19 founding members to hundreds of supplier and converter members. The organization celebrated their Diamond Anniversary in 2008.

Rolith, Inc. Wins the 2013 Best Manufacturing Technology Award from the Printed Electronics Industry

Rolith, Inc., a leader in advanced nanostructured devices, is pleased to announce that Printed Electronics Industry selected Rolith for the Best Manufacturing Technology award based on its production of transparent metal mesh conductors for large touch screen displays, OLED lighting and photovoltaics.

Pleasanton, CA (PRWEB) November 24, 2013

Each year the Printed Electronics industry recognizes and awards outstanding achievement to those involved in the rapidly growing printed electronics business. The annual awards were announced at the tenth annual IDTechEx Printed Electronics event this week in Santa Clara, California - the world's largest event on the topic. The awards recognize outstanding progress in the development and commercialization of printed electronics, an industry that produces a huge amount of technical innovation, which will be used in many products, and is now being widely adopted. The entries were judged by both end users and academic judges.

Rolith has won this award for its NanoWeb™ transparent metal mesh conductors technology. NanoWeb has demonstrated superior performance by simultaneously achieving all the most critical features for advanced touch screen display products: (i) high transmission (~ 96%), (ii) low sheet resistance (~ 4 Ohm/sq), (iii) absolute invisibility of metal mesh to the human eye (even in the most stringent illumination conditions) and finally, (iv) complete elimination of parasitic Moiré-fringes, for any display pixel structure. Rolith has also shown that NanoWeb can be fabricated with any metals (Aluminum, Silver, etc.) and rigid glass substrates and flexible PET films.

The excellent performance of NanoWeb is achieved due to the sub-micron linewidth of the metal mesh. This fine resolution of patterning is made possible by Rolith’s proprietary manufacturing technology known as Rolling Mask Lithography (RMLTM), which is based on near-field continuous optical lithography and implemented using cylindrical phase masks. RML also introduces the ability to include the patterning of traces/bezels and the NanoWeb mesh in the same lithographic step, further dropping the cost of touch display manufacturing.

“We are very encouraged by Printed Electronics Industry recognition of our breakthrough technology. NanoWeb’s performance clearly surpasses all ITO alternative technologies currently on the market.”, said Dr Boris Kobrin, founder and CEO, Rolith. He adds: “We are also very excited with the interest in our technology expressed by all major commercial and mobile touch screen display manufacturers. We plan to enter into partnership agreements with some of them in the very near future.”

About Rolith, Inc:

Rolith, Inc. is a leader in advanced nanostructured products for consumer electronics, solar and green building markets. Rolith was formed in 2008 and operates from Pleasanton, CA. The company holds a comprehensive patent portfolio in the areas of nanolithography, masks fabrication, material deposition and etch methods, and nanophotonic devices. Colorado Rural Health Center Celebrates National Rural Health Day

The Colorado Rural Health Center joined members, partners and other state and national rural stakeholders to “Celebrate the Power of Rural” during the third annual National Rural Health Day celebration.

Denver, CO (PRWEB) November 24, 2013

National Rural Health Day was observed on Thursday, November 21st as an opportunity to raise awareness of the unique healthcare issues facing rural communities throughout the United States.

The National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health (NOSORH) created Rural Health Day as a way to showcase the good works of America’s nearly 60 million rural citizens and promote the efforts of state offices of rural health and others in addressing the healthcare needs in rural areas.

Events recognizing National Rural Health Day were held throughout the nation. NOSORH hosted a national press conference at the National Press Club in Washington, DC with some of the nation’s top leaders invited to speak.

Dr. Mary Wakefield, Administrator for the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration discussed her longstanding personal and professional appreciation for both the healthcare challenges, as well as the opportunities that are present in rural areas.

Dr. Wakefield, a native of North Dakota said, “While there are clearly unique challenges in rural – there are also seeds of innovation continuously sewn in rural healthcare, and they are seeds that grow into new approaches to longstanding concerns impacting rural communities.”

Under Secretary of Agriculture Doug O’Brien also spoke during the press conference. “Rural America is critically important to the future of this country,” said O’Brien, adding “There are huge opportunities in rural.”

In Colorado, the Colorado Rural Health Center (CRHC) spearheaded Rural Health Day activities. “Rural health providers are facing a myriad of challenges in today’s ever-changing healthcare landscape,” said Michelle Mills, Chief Executive Officer at the CRHC.

Rural communities face a lack of healthcare providers and affordability issues resulting from larger percentages of un-/underinsured citizens and greater out-of-pocket health costs.

In light of these obstacles the healthcare needs of rural citizens are as unique as the communities in which they live. Those needs cannot be addressed by utilizing a generic “one size fits all” approach – programs and policies must be flexible enough to allow rural communities to identify and address the unique needs of their residents.

Governor John Hickenlooper issued a Proclamation declaring November 21st Colorado Rural Health Day. “Our goal at the state level is to increase general awareness about healthcare in rural Colorado,” said Michelle Mills.

“Healthcare delivery in the US is changing by leaps and bounds,” added Mills. Rural hospitals and healthcare practices are the economic foundation of their communities. In addition to typically being the largest employers, these providers strengthen the economic health of their communities by ensuring a healthy workforce.

There were many achievements to endorse during this year’s Rural Health Day. For instance, over a dozen rural hospitals were recently recognized by iVantage Health Analytics as HealthStrongTM award recipients for excellence in patient satisfaction, efficiency, outcomes, quality and overall excellence.

“Receiving this award validates the quality of care that rural providers in Colorado provide to patients and is also a testament to the commitment and dedication of their medical and nursing staff that impact patients every day,” added Mills.

Rural hospitals receiving recognition include, Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center; Aspen Valley Hospital; East Morgan County Hospital District; Estes Park Medical Center; Family Health West Hospital; Grand River Medical Center; Gunnison Valley Hospital; Heart Of The Rockies Regional Medical Center; Keefe Memorial Hospital; Pagosa Mountain Hospital; Pikes Peak Regional Hospital; Pioneers Medical Center; Prowers Medical Center; Rio Grande Hospital; San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center; Southwest Memorial Hospital; Valley View Hospital Association; and Yampa Valley Medical Center.

To promote awareness, CRHC hosted an open house celebration at their offices in Aurora. “We wanted to open our doors to our urban partners and others interested in learning more about our programs and services,” says CRHC’s Director of Outreach and Workforce Melissa Bosworth.

Community College of Aurora Partners With City for Significant Physical Improvements to Its Lowry Campus

CCA, a Colorado community college, to break ground this spring on beautification and signage projects designed to enhance environment, accessibility for students and visitors.

Denver, CO (PRWEB) November 25, 2013

Two projects aimed at improving the environment and accessibility for students and visitors to the Community College of Aurora’s Lowry Campus are deep in the planning process and could be completed by July, Richard Maestas, CCA’s VP of Administration, said.

A Memorandum Of Understanding currently is being drafted for a joint landscaping project with the City of Aurora, led by Mayor Steve Hogan. The city has pledged $100,000 in funding that will be matched by CCA, one of the Colorado community colleges. The MOU is expected to be finalized by both sides by January, allowing the bidding process to begin.

Additionally, the company Innerface Architectural Signage Co. has been hired to conduct a signage and way finding project and is in the midst of drafting its recommendations to the Colorado Community College System for its approval. CCA is working on the project in conjunction with CCCS.

The way finding endeavor should enhance flow from existing signage along Sixth Ave. heading east towards Quebec Ave. both into and around campus.

“The major benefit we’re going to have is people arriving on campus are going to receive some professional landscaping where currently there’s a hodgepodge of grass and dirt. But more than that, they’ll see signage and way finding that makes Lowry easier to navigate,” Maestas said.

CCA previously completed Phase 1 of a wide-scale redevelopment project at Lowry in September 2011. The core of that $1.4 million project was the creation of an entryway and plaza entering West Quad, which faces Sixth Ave. and is the focal point of the campus.

The latest endeavors are a continuation of that mindset to improve the physical appearance of Lowry, while at the same time making entrance, egress and circumnavigating the campus easier for CCA students and others housed at the site.

Low-water xeriscaping will be an integral part of the design created by landscape architects. Work on both projects should begin in the spring.

“Lowry from a distance still looks like an old Air Force base, not a community college,” Maestas said. “So we want to do all we can to make it look a little more inviting while also ensuring that our stakeholders are clearly instructed to their campus destination by new signage, avoiding confusion or necessitating a trip to CCA’s welcome desk to obtain directions.”

Community College of Aurora’s $200,000 financial outlay for its portion of the signage project will be paid, in part, by its Foundation. That endeavor likely will include a new main entrance sign that denotes arrival at Lowry and names other campus tenants, including New America School, University of Northern Colorado and Community College of Denver.

There will be some intersection of the two projects, such as placing new landscaping around the entrance sign.

“An ancillary benefit to the project is that it demonstrates that the city and college can work together and fund things, which is the best way to do it, because it produces more bang for the buck,” Maestas said. “Another exciting thing about strengthening the college’s partnership with the city with this project is that a first step usually leads to other things; at least, that’s what I’m hoping.”

Sense Of Awe Inspires Belief In The Supernatural

*Brett Smith for redOrbit.com - Your Universe Online*

A study recently published by the journal Psychological Science brings new meaning to the term “God’s country,” as a pair of researchers reported that experiencing awe-inspiring moments, like seeing the Grand Canyon or Aurora Borealis, increases the odds of a person believing in a higher power or the supernatural.

"Many historical accounts of religious epiphanies and revelations seem to involve the experience of being awe-struck by the beauty, strength or size of a divine being, and these experiences change the way people understand and think about the world,” said study author Piercarlo Valdesolo, a social psychologist at Claremont McKenna College in California.

"We wanted to test the exact opposite prediction: It's not that the presence of the supernatural elicits awe, it's that awe elicits the perception of the presence of the supernatural,” he added.

In particular, the study researchers said they were interested in the idea of agency detection, or the tendency to see events as the result of intentional and purpose-driven agents, be they natural or otherworldly.

In the study, Valdesolo and co-author Jesse Graham of the University of Southern California had participants view either awe-inspiring scenes from the Planet Earth documentary series or ‘neutral’ scene from a news interview. After watching the video, study volunteers were asked to rank their level of awe and whether they thought worldly events happen according to some kind of master plan.

The researchers found that volunteers who viewed the awe-inspiring video were more likely to believe in a supernatural plan and in God compared to the neutral group. The same effect was seen even when participants were shown awe-inspiring special effects videos, such as a massive waterfall pouring through city streets.

In a separate experiment for the same study, participants who were shown awe-inspiring clips became more intolerant of uncertainty. This higher level of certainty, and narrow-mindedness, could explain why sensations of awe translate to a greater belief in the supernatural, the study team said.

"The irony in this is that gazing upon things that we know to be formed by natural causes, such as the jaw-dropping expanse of the Grand Canyon, pushes us to explain them as the product of supernatural causes," Valdesolo noted.

The study authors said that their results could explain why certain people seek to explain the world around them via scientific means – theorizing that awe could motivate us to search for explanations, whether they are secular or spiritual in nature.

The team came to this conclusion after another study experiment showed that participants who viewed awe-inspiring video were more likely to say a random string of numbers was actually made by human design.

The study team said they are now looking into factors that change the effect of awe on belief in the supernatural. Citing religious practices such as kneeling and bowing, the team said they are looking at how the adoption of submissive body postures, which make us feel less powerful, affect experiences of awe.

"The more submissive we act, the more awe we might feel, and perhaps the stronger our beliefs become," Valdesolo said. Reported by redOrbit 13 hours ago.

‘Hunger Games: Catching Fire’: What’s Next for Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth?

Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson are the three biggest young stars to emerge from Lionsgate’s “Hunger Games” franchise, and with two more installments on the way after “Catching Fire” hits theaters on Friday, their careers are showing no signs of slowing down.

Lawrence, the busiest of the bunch, will follow up her second portrayal of “Hunger Games” heroine Katniss Everdeen with a dramatic performance in Sony’s Dec. 18 release, “American Hustle” — her second collaboration with “Silver Linings Playbook” director David O. Russell. The  Oscar-winning actress portrays the young wife of a con man (Christian Bale) who gets roped into an FBI sting operation designed to take down the mayor of  Camden, New Jersey.

While “Catching Fire” is expected to be one of the biggest box office hits of the year, Lawrence will have another crack at breaking records in May when “X-Men Days of Future Past” hits theaters. The seventh installment of 20th Century Fox’s “X-Men” franchise features mutants from cinematic universe director Bryan Singer started in 2000, as well as the younger faces Matthew Vaughn cast in 2011′s “X-Men: First Class.” Lawrence is returning as blue shapeshifter Mystique.

Although Lawrence had to turn down a role in Peter and Bobby Farrelly’s upcoming “Dumb and Dumber” sequel due to her “Hunger Games: Mockingjay” production schedule, the actress did have time to film a quick cameo. The 23 year old will be seen as the younger version of Kathleen Turner’s character when “Dumb and Dumber To” hits theaters on Nov. 14.

“Serena,” Lawrence’s third project alongside Bradley Cooper, is awaiting a U.S. release date. The Depression-era drama follows a couple’s struggles to build a timber empire, which is threatened by the wife’s inability to bear children.

Projects on her horizon include two with “Hunger Games” director Gary Ross. Lawrence is set to star in his adaptation of John Steinbeck’s seminal 1952 novel “East of Eden,” as well as Ross’ adaptation of Hannah Kent’s “Burial Rites.” Lawrence is also attached to star in yet another literary adaptation, “The Glass Castle,” which Destin Daniel Cretton (“Short Term 12″) will direct.

Hemsworth, who is about to knock older brother Chris “Thor” Hemsworth out of the top spot at the box office when “Catching Fire” makes upwards of $150 million this weekend, has a few roles he can look forward to outside of playing Katniss’ crush Gale.

2013 release “Paranoia” didn’t do much for Hemsworth, or distributor Relativity Media, but that’s not stopping the company from trusting him to take the lead in action film “Aurora Rising.” Hemsworth will play a surfer turned military fighter pilot who, after acing a complicated and messy first combat mission, gets recruited to be part of an elite team to test the next generation of aircrafts just as an international conflict begins to escalate.

Hemsworth will also join Teresa Palmer, John Malkovich, Bruce Dern and Billy Bob Thornton in “Cut Bank,” a 2014 thriller about a young man trying to escape the small town in Montana where he grew up, only to be met with a flood of bad karma when he moves to a bigger city.

Hutcherson, who plays Hunger Games victor Peeta in the blockbuster franchise, will next be seen in “Paradise Lost,” a 2014 drama in which he stars as a surfer who meets the girl of his dreams in Colombia — then meets her uncle, Pablo Escobar (Benicio Del Toro).

Last May, Hutcherson’s production company, JetLag Productions, announced he will star in and produce “Ape.” Directed by Miguel Sapochnik (“Repo Men”), the dark psychological thriller focuses on a young man’s struggle with mental illness, love and a deep-rooted family secret.
