Colorado Lawmakers Faced Intense Profanity, Rape Threats Amid Heated Gun Control Debate

Lawmakers are known to get angry messages from unhappy constituents, but the emails that Democratic lawmakers in Colorado received during the 2013 legislative session as they debated gun control are downright ugly. The Democratic caucus compiled a worst-of collection of extraordinarily offensive and vile emails that various lawmakers received between March and April, called "Worst Regards," as the gun control debate raged in the statehouse. Many of the most disgusting emails were directed at Sen. Evie Hudak (D-Westminster), who, during a hearing on a bill that would have banned concealed-carry firearms on college campuses, told college rape victim Amanda Collins that, even if she were armed the night of her attack, Collins still wouldn't have been able to stop her assailant. Senate President John Morse, who faces a historic recall election today over his support of gun control, told KRDO that he ignored some of his constituents opinions on gun control because of the extreme nature of some of their statements. "Those that we didn't listen to were those who were vile and disgusting and sent threats -- which truthfully, turned out to be an awful lot of the folks on the opposition, Morse said to KRDO. Morse, a Democrat, was criticized by right-wing blog Colorado Peak Politics for his statements to KRDO, but it's difficult to disagree with Morse's take on some of these opposition emails. Below is just a small sampling of some of the ugliest emails Colorado lawmakers received in 2013, but be warned, although some of the strong language has been censored, *the contents of the emails are still EXTREMELY offensive*. The identities of the email authors, as well as the lawmakers who received these messages, have been removed from each email. Spelling and grammar remain as originally emailed. *March 5, 2013 at 7:49 p.m.*

I am going to stick a knife up your c--- and tear your heart out through there. If you have one.

*March 9, 2013 at 7:19 a.m.*

You are a waste of a human being. Let's hope someday you are raped and wish you had something to protect yourself. If I was one of your children, I would be very ashamed of my mom and her ignorant mouth. You are truly the leading a--hole in the state. Guy

*March 6, 2013 at 4:20 p.m.*

Subject: Hoping YOU get raped ! But of course my prayers won’t be answered because you are way to fat and ugly for anyone to rape. You are a pig. I don’t just mean the way you look either. You are a PIG. A NAZI PIG. Another typical mindless idiot obamanite zombie MORON. You and those like you are the reason the word democrat has become a curse word in duhmerica. Maybe someone will in fact stick a gun in your mouth and rob you and beat you to death. THEN the world will in fact be a safer place. For this I pray and I am an atheist !

*March 5, 2013 at 10:26 a.m.*

Do us all a favor and go play in oncoming traffic you pathetic excuse for a human. Freedom and Liberty are two items you do not deserve. Go f--- yourself, Patrick

*March 6, 2013 at 12:41 p.m.*

If I run into you I will vomit on you. What a disgusting, smarty-pants, know-it-all trailer piece. Who would be able to NOT to vomit on you. Smarty-pants, guess what I wish for you. How that girl could hold back when you had the disgusting gall to lecture her is beyond me. May Westminster be swallowed by a sink hole (except for the animals). If you are an example of the kind of human-like creature THAT ( do you get the distinction-I bet you're not bright enough-80 point IQ) lives there it will be no loss. I can wish-it's still a free country until the coup. Absolutely worst wishes, MCM

The gun control debate was extremely heated in Colorado and these emails represent just some of the vitriol spewed at lawmaker. Some even received death threats. Franklin Sain, a Colorado Springs man, was accused of sending several profanity-laced, violent emails and voicemails to Rep. Rhonda Fields (D-Aurora) over her support of gun control legislation. Sain was charged with harassing Fields, but the charges were later dropped. Back in February, during the legislative hearing process, freshman Rep. Joe Salazar (D-Thornton) received a voicemail threatening his life. Democratic House Speaker Mark Farrandino said threats were also made against several of the highly visible members of committees during the hearings who supported a particular gun control measure, including against Rep. Daniel Kagan (D-Cherry Hills Village). Reported by Huffington Post 17 hours ago.

Peering into Genetic Defects, CU Scientists Discover a New Metabolic Disease

An international team of scientists, including University of Colorado School of Medicine and Children’s Hospital Colorado researchers, has discovered a new disease related to an inability to process Vitamin B12. The disorder is rare but can be devastating.

Aurora, Colo. (PRWEB) September 05, 2013

An international team of scientists, including University of Colorado School of Medicine and Children’s Hospital Colorado researchers, has discovered a new disease related to an inability to process Vitamin B12.

The disorder is rare but can be devastating.

“Some people with rare inherited conditions cannot process vitamin B 12 properly,” says CU researcher Tamim Shaikh, PhD, a geneticist and senior author of a paper about the new disease. “These individuals can end up having serious health problems, including developmental delay, epilepsy, anemia, stroke, psychosis and dementia.”

The discovery is important because it could help doctors diagnose the disease and, eventually, could lead to prevention or treatment. But there is more to the story than that.

A 9-year-old Colorado boy named Max Watson, who because of his metabolic disease uses a computer to communicate, was the first patient in whom this discovery was made.

His older sister Abbey, 15, volunteered in the CU lab that helped achieve this medical breakthrough.

His parents cooperated with the study knowing that the results likely would not help their son but might help future patients.

The discovery, published today in The American Journal of Human Genetics, illustrates the complex and relatively new realm of medical discovery where researchers peer into the genetic make-up of patients to discern what went wrong to cause a disease.

Vitamin B 12 also is called cobalamin. The new disease is called cobalimin X, or cblX.

Obtained from foods such as milk, eggs, fish and meat, B 12 is essential to human health because it helps the body convert food into fuel. It’s vital to the nervous system and for making red blood cells.

Max was born with symptoms that looked like he had a B 12 problem called cobalamin C deficiency or cblC for short, which, like its newly discovered counterpart, can show up in utero.

The gene for cblC had been discovered by researchers who studied several hundred patients with similar symptoms. A few of those patients, however, did not have the genetic mutation that that was common to the cblC patients. And some, like Max, had symptoms that didn’t quite match up.

“We knew from early on that something was unusual about this patient,” says Johan Van Hove, MD, a CU professor in the Department of Pediatrics, who saw Max when the boy was just a few months old.

Max was labeled as having cblC – but Van Hove and others on a team of metabolism experts at Children’s Hospital Colorado had their doubts. Some of Max’s symptoms seemed too severe for that diagnosis.

So Shaikh, an associate professor in the medical school’s pediatrics department, and CU colleagues, used what is called next generation genetic sequencing to delve into Max’s DNA. They also looked at genes of patients who didn’t fit the cobalamin C model, obtained from partners at the National Institutes of Health, and in Canada and Switzerland.

All of those patients carried mutations that hadn’t been identified before. The problem was due to flaws in a gene designed to control the workings of an enzyme that, in turn, helps the body metabolize B 12. The article gives a name to Max’s disease – cblX -- because the gene is on the X chromosome.

“This discovery will lead to the correct diagnosis of this serious genetic disorder and will change the way that genetic counseling is given in these families,” says study co-author David Rosenblatt, MD, with the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre. “It also helps explain how vitamin B 12 functions in the body, even for those without the disorder.”

The research moves matters to a new phase, Van Hove says, because “if you have some idea about how the system works, that is the beginning of providing more logical treatment.”

The next step, Shaikh adds, “is to determine how mutations in the gene lead to the symptoms seen in patients with cblX in hopes of better understanding the disease and – some day – being able to head it off or treat it.”

For Shaikh, the discovery has meant more than solving a genetic puzzle.
“Laboratory researchers like me don’t normally get to meet the people affected by their research. It’s been a privilege to meet the Watsons,” he says. “They are an amazing family.”

When Max’s sister Abbey – a star athlete -- visited the lab investigating her brother’s disease, Shaikh and his team embraced her curiosity and let her join the quest. Max’s mother and father, Deana and Steve Watson, grateful to Children’s hospital for the care Max received and to CU for leading the research, have done whatever was needed to support the project.

But it hasn’t been easy and the discovery doesn’t alter Max’s condition. Max needs full assistance in all aspects of daily care, including a specialized wheelchair and devices to help him stand and move to a bed. Unable to be in a classroom, he attends school via live internet – to the delight of classmates who talk with him on the screen and know his favorite color is yellow.

“We’re pretty realistic about all of this,” Deana says. “The whole reason we have from the beginning agreed to any sort of studies is that maybe some day, with Max’s findings, another family won’t be in this situation. We’re OK with that and proud Max is playing a part with that.” Reported by PRWeb 18 hours ago.

Online Reporter Joe Hosey May Face Jail Time Culture
Legal
Nation

In a series of articles written for the Joliet, Ill. Patch.com website, Joe Hosey described a sordid double-murder that sounded like the worst kind of slasher-fiction.

Eric Glover and Terrance Rankins, both 22, were found strangled in the home of Alisa Massaro, 19. Hosey’s articles detail both the murders, including the details that two of the suspects had sex on the corpses.

Though these details are shocking, none were more shocked by them than the investigating police officers. Why? Because these details were classified, listed only confidential reports. After their own investigation failed to reveal the leak, Hosey was ordered by Judge Gerald Kinney of Will County to turn over both the documents and the name of his source. Hosey has refused, even though he may face jail time.

“I know I am doing the right thing,” he told Fox News and said that he’s refusing to comply with the judge’s order “on principle.” Patch is standing by their reporter, and in an article written by Associate Editorial Director Dennis Robaugh it was revealed that their attorney has already filed an appeal of the ruling.

Illinois has a “shield law” that exists to protect journalists from turning over confidential sources, even by court order. However, Judge Kinney ruled that the shield law doesn’t apply here. According to the text of the law, both Hosey and Patch.com meet the qualifications required for protection.

Hosey is not the only reporter whose work appears primarily online to face such charges. FoxNews.com’s Jana Winter was subpoenaed for an exclusive report regarding a notebook Aurora, Colorado shooter James Holmes sent to a psychiatrist. The common thread in both of these First Amendment challenges is that these reporters wrote for online outlets which could indicate a move to set different precedents for the journalism on the web.

CO Sheriff: 'Should Be Able to Fire Representatives Who Ignore Constituents'

CO Sheriff: 'Should Be Able to Fire Representatives Who Ignore Constituents' When El Paso County, Colorado Sheriff Terry Maketa spoke to Breitbart News on September 4, he said "constituents should be able to fire representatives who ignore constituents."

Just hours before, Maketa attended a rally where he lent his voice "to citizens fighting for their constitutional rights through the recall process."

Speaking to Breitbart News, Maketa made it clear that he understands Coloradans' frustration with the new gun control laws: "If you look at it from the macro-level, these laws did not deliver what was promised."

"Number one--they were passed under the promise that they would prevent another Aurora or Sandy Hook but there is no validity to that statement," he explained.

"Number two--these laws were not born in Colorado. Rather, they are just a copy of what NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg and others are trying to do all around the country," Maketa said. "Number three--the laws are unenforceable. They ban 'high capacity' magazines purchased after the laws went into effect on July 1, but provide no mechanism for knowing which magazines were in fact owned or transferred prior to that date."

"Also, the rules of possession at a length of 72 hours mean that if your firearm is out of your possession for more than 72 hours you have to do a background check to get it back," Maketa revealed. "I have a friend in Special Forces, and what this rule means for him is that each time he's deployed and leaves his gun with this fiance, she has to have an initial background check and then another background check every 30 until he returns in order to keep possession of the firearms."

"This is just one more burden on a man who is fighting for our country," Maketa said.

"Number four--the mandated background check on every gun sale requires that the check be done with an Federal Firearm License (FFL) holder," he said. "But as the name suggests, these are federal license holders under federal guidelines, not under state guidelines. Yet the state wants to mandate their actions?"

When Breitbart News asked Maketa what he thought of the recall efforts, he said: "I firmly believe that if voters think their representatives are not representing their views fairly, then they ought to be able to fire them."

"Constituents should be able to fire representatives who ignore constituents," Maketa stated. "Voters think the two senators currently being recalled dismissed their opinions--literally said they did not want to hear from them--and when a representative shows that kind of arrogance, that kind of tyranny, the people ought to be able to fire them."
