How Two Brothers Become CEOs Of Rival Ad Agencies That Are Just A Block Apart

How Two Brothers Become CEOs Of Rival Ad Agencies That Are Just A Block Apart"My father always said don't go into business with your family, it's a bad idea," ad executive Rob Buchner told me over an early breakfast at Hotel St. Giles in Midtown Manhattan.

Growing up in a third-generation baker's family in Aurora, Illinois, Rob watched his dad work in the small confines of a hot kitchen that he ran with his four brothers.

Rob and his older brother Mike, 50 and 52, respectively, paid no heed to their father's warning. In 1989, Rob allowed himself to be wooed away from ad agency Campbell Mithun to work on the Porsche account at local competitor Fallon, which happened to be his brother's workplace of five years.

"I was unsure whether or not we should be working for the same company," Rob said, "but really the idea of working on Porsche was just too seductive for a 25-year-old guy who likes cars."

So the Buchner boys worked side-by-side in the halls of Minnesota-based but internationally renowned Fallon, which has worked on clients including United Airlines and until recently, Cadillac. But two years ago the hierarchy changed and Rob began answering to Mike in his new role as CEO.

Rob, of course, said he "couldn't be happier" when his brother got the job and that it was the "obvious choice" given his five more years at the agency and "very deep, father-son like relationship" with co-founder Pat Fallon, "but I [still] wanted to run a company," Rob said.

So now he is.

For the first time in 24 years, the Buchner brothers are parting ways. Rob is going literally one block away to take on the role of CEO at a different ad agency. He's going back to lead Campbell Mithun.

"From my old office at Fallon, I can look across at my new office at Campbell Mithun, a block away," Rob said. Waking up at 3 in the morning to work in the bakery every weekend since the age of 9 has completely killed his taste for sweet menu items. It also programmed his body to wake up before 5 every day without an alarm.

That latter is going to serve Rob well as he overhauls Campbell Mithun's image from local Midwestern shop to "dominating national force that competes broadly for major, major business."

With his kids already grown, this is the new baby and there's no time for relaxing. No matter, though. Rob has only taken one two week vacation in 28 years.

*The "One Buchner In A Room At A Time" Rule*

When Rob's move was announced earlier this summer, the press angled it as brothers facing off to helm rival agencies.

"I don't know if it's going to be the head-to-head competition that everyone would like to believe that it is," Rob said.

And in spite of their close proximity, Mike noted that he "couldn't remember the last time Campbell Mithun and Fallon were in a pitch together … but we'll be in it to win it if we're in it."

To Rob and Mike, their journey seems a whole lot less dramatic and exciting than the outsider might think it is.

"I'm sorry to disappoint, but Mike and I have never been competitive with one another or else we wouldn't have been able to coexist within the same company for 24 years," Rob said. "I can't think of a single time where we've had major, major conflict."

In fact, it seems as if they barely even saw each other most of the time at the agency.

The two brothers started down a similar account management path, but that meant that they each dealt with their own portfolios individually. They also developed different niches within the industry, Rob continued. Mike became immersed in the operations and finance aspect whereas Rob was a front room, business development guy.

"The truth is there were probably some points there, you know, in the '90's when we didn't see each other for weeks at a time," Rob said.

"Literally for the first 15 years we worked together we didn't really cross paths," Mike said. "We'd see each other at office and agency functions, but we had our own accounts to manage."

And according to Rob, "Fallon is not a lunch culture, never has been."

As the company grew from approximately 75 to 600 employees, gaining offices in New York, Hong Kong, and Sao Paolo, their interactions were limited virtually until the end when Rob began to report to Mike.

And even then, checks were put in place.

"Mike and I were never in the same pitch room together," Rob said. "We always said only one Buchner in a room at a time."

The rule was instated to make sure that the clients never felt awkward or ill at ease regarding their relationship, although Rob added, "It was probably more us than them."

"After working together for so long, we probably take for granted how unusual it is to have two siblings who are CEOs in the same city," Mike said.

*Is There Only Brotherly Love?*

Boring as brotherly love sounds, Mike and Rob insist that among the four Buchner brothers — one is also in the marketing world while the other works in finance — there was no bullying or rivalries. They credit good parenting and a strong foundation in sports, primarily baseball and football, for their functionality and ability to peacefully work as a team.

"I know it's kind of hard to believe," Mike said. "Neither one of us even pursued each others' girls."

Although considering that Rob has been with his wife Leslie since he was 16 and Mike has been with his wife Margie since high school, too, that's pretty credible.

All four brothers studied at the University of Illinois, and even though Rob and Mike were both in the same frat, ATO, at the same time, Mike assured me, "I recused myself from hazing my brother … I wasn't directly involved."

Mike and Rob live close by, have overlapping friends, take joint vacations — they even designed and built a home together in the woods.

*Here's What They Disagree About*

Even after chipping away at their positive Midwestern demeanors, the snarkiest they ever got towards one another was when the issue of lawn maintenance — that's right, lawn maintenance — came up.

Here's how the Buchners think they're different:

Lawn Care:

· *Rob*: "I like the chainsaw, tending to our pool and gardens. Mike hasn't cut his lawn or shoveled snow in 20 years."

· *Mike*: "I have a lawn service and he makes his wife and kids do the lawn. I don't think that he's doing the lawn cutting."

Football:

· *Rob*: "Ask Mike about the NFL — he's a highly technical fan.  He's a rabid Bears fan.  On every Sunday of the season he's in his mancave from 10 until 10 glued to DirectTV Sunday Ticket. Me, I'm on a lake casting for Muskie or cycling."

· *Mike*: "I'm loyal to my NFL team. He might be a Vikings fan if he's in the playoffs, but if not he's less so. I'm a Bears fan through and through."

Parking:

· *Mike*: "He'll take the farthest spot in the parking lot so he doesn't get his door dinged, but I'll take the closest one to the store. He's more particular than I am."

Their approach to problem solving differs, too. "I might be a little more patient and he might be a little more impatient," Mike said. And that will impact how they lead differently.

"Mike is a very contemplative executive," Rob said. "He is a great listener; he’s soft-spoken. And that’s a rare quality in this field. There’s a lot of blustery bullshit which I think we’ve always pushed off against. I may put myself out a little further than Mike. I might embrace a little more personal risk in what I say and how I do things. And that’s ok."

The 15th Edition of the Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (Autumn Edition) Returns this October with Wide Selection of Innovative and Novel Lighting Products

Littman Bros Lighting has been waiting for Asia’s largest lighting fair to return and this October the Autumn Edition of the Hong Kong International Lighting Fair is coming back in full force, shedding a spotlight on green lighting.

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) August 14, 2013

This year’s 15th edition of the HKTDC Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (Autumn Edition) will be held October 27-30 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre; it is expected to draw close to 2,300 global exhibitors to showcase their latest designs in lighting.

According to hktdc.com, this event continues to gain popularity with both exhibitors and attendance each year, with “a record-breaking of nearly 2,300 exhibitors from more than 37 countries and regions at the 2012 event.” Last year’s Lighting Fair also attracted more than 36 thousand buyers.

This year at the fair one of the strongest market trends is focused on energy efficient lighting, creating and designing products that not only complies with environmental regulations but also gives consumers the ability to help the environment and be green. According to hktdc.com, a survey conducted at the HKTDC International Lighting Fair 2013 (Spring Edition), “a striking 96% of all respondents identified LED as the primary focus for the lighting industry in the years to come.”

The Hong Kong Fair is spaced out so attendees and buyers can effortlessly find the products from their category choice and source.

At the 2012 Hong Kong Fair, the LED & Green Lighting Zone featured more than 800 exhibitors and this year this section will be there again, which will exhibit a range of LED and eco-friendly lighting products including commercial lighting, residential lighting, advertising lighting and lighting for retail and architectural use.

In another section of the Hong Kong International Lighting Fair will be the Hall of Aurora, the fair’s brand section, which focuses on the most innovative and original designs and styles in lighting from premium lighting brands; more than 300 exhibitors from manufacturers such as EVERLIGHT, Neo-Neon, Philips, Fulham, EGLO, EVERLIGHT and Citizen, just to name a few.

According to hktdc.com, one of the prevailing trends seen throughout the years was for “small-sized orders with higher frequency and shorter delivery lead times in order to minimize inventory” – this is why the Small-Order Zone of the fair will return to showcase products solely meant for ordering in small quantities, accommodating, yet again, to the buyers who attend.

Some additional perks at the Autumn Edition in Hong Kong is the selection of seminars that will be offered to attendees on topics covering the latest market developments, technology innovation, regulatory updates and design trends, “which are highly informative and beneficial to industry players for strategic business planning.”

Votes will be taken and tallied to award products in three categories – Architectural/Commercial Lighting, Decorative Household Lighting and Outdoor Lighting. These products are submitted by exhibitors for the My Favorite Lighting Products Award 2013 and exhibitors will display their winning products at the fairground throughout the fair.

With so much to offer in innovation and technology within the lighting industry, it seems the Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (Autumn Edition) will be as successful as the last with record-breaking exhibitors and attendance. Reported by PRWeb 10 hours ago.

Typhoon Lands In China After Shutting Down Hong Kong

BEIJING — Tens of thousands of people were evacuated as a powerful typhoon thundered into southern China on Wednesday after shutting down the bustling Asian financial center of Hong Kong and sinking a cargo ship.

Packing high winds and torrential rain, Typhoon Utor forced the closure of schools, offices, shopping centers and construction sites in cities along its path northwest across Guangdong province.

More than 60,000 people were evacuated in the city of Maoming alone, while another 98,000 were moved to safety to the south on the island province of Hainan, where 26,000 fishing boats were also ordered to shelter in harbors. Flights and ferry services were suspended on the island, stranding thousands of travelers.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries on the mainland due to the storm, which was packing sustained gale force winds of 145 kilometers (90 miles) per hour.

In Hong Kong, offices, schools and courts were shut and the stock market halted trading, bringing an eerie calm to the normally busy southern Chinese commercial hub. More than 350 flights were canceled or delayed and bus and commuter ferry services were curtailed.

Helicopter search and rescue teams from Hong Kong and Guangdong province rescued 21 crew members from the "Trans Summer," a bulk carrier, after it started listing in waters southwest of Hong Kong, local broadcaster RTHK said.

Six people in Hong Kong were reported injured. Strong winds blew down 21 trees, but otherwise the city emerged largely unscathed.

Utor was the world's strongest typhoon of the year before it crossed the Philippines earlier this week, leaving at least seven people dead and four missing. One woman in northeastern Isabela province was seen on camera being swept away by a raging river. Her body was found later.

Dozens of fishermen were missing after the storm, but most have since returned home, officials said.

Rescuers were still struggling to reach at least three isolated towns in the hardest-hit Aurora province, where the typhoon slammed ashore.

"As of now, we don't have communication (with the three towns) and the roads are not passable, even to motorcycles, due to landslides, rockslides and uprooted trees," said Rey Balido, spokesman for the national disaster agency. He said authorities were taking alternate routes and that the Philippine air force would deliver relief goods.

These 1,429 US Towns Could Be Destroyed By Rising Sea Levels

$
0
0
Sea levels could rise by up to 23 feet by 2100 if we don't drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions, according to a study published in the Journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

This would have devastating effects on coastal settlements around the world and in the United States too, where 1,429 towns and cities would be at least half-wiped out, according to analysis by Benjamin Strauss of Climate Central.

"The current trend in carbon emissions likely implies the eventual crippling or loss of most coastal cities in the world," Strauss wrote in his commentary. The only way to avoid this future is not only to reduce global greenhouse emissions greatly, but to also begin removing greenhouse gasses, like carbon dioxide, from the air.

We looked at the data that Strauss used to get his figure, provided by Climate Central. Here are the stats:

· If things don't change by 2020, there will be an unavoidable rise in sea level by 5 feet and 2 inches. That will push more than 50% of the population out of 381 municipalities, resulting in 4,187,262 people losing their hometowns.
· If greenhouse gasses continue to rise until 2050, there will be an unavoidable rise in sea level by 10 feet and 1 inch. That will push more than 50% of the population out of 715 municipalities, resulting in 8,121,973 people losing their hometowns.
· If we wait until 2100 to mend our polluting ways, sea level will rise by 23 feet and 1 inch, displacing more than 50% of the population of 1,429 cities and towns, and 18,074,940 people.

Here are the cities and towns that could see more than 50% of their population displaced by rising sea levels by 2100:

A few notes about the data: The researchers used population data from the 2010 census, assuming coastal populations would remain the same. They also didn't make any adjustments for local engineering solutions, like seawalls.

And now here's the full list of towns that could be at least half wiped out by 2100 by rising sea levels:

CU Athletes Work Smarter to Build Athletic Success

Student-athletes at University of Colorado Boulder are honing their athletic performance with help from the experts at CU’s Anschutz Health and Wellness Center (AHWC). Athletes from CU’s football team and men’s and women’s basketball teams are participating in leading-edge testing and monitoring allowing them to get the most of their training and perform to their best ability while avoiding injury.

AURORA, Colo. (PRWEB) August 14, 2013

All it takes is a combination of blood tests proven effective in improving the performance of top athletes from around the world. Interpreting the blood panels and formulating training plans is an evidence based process developed by scientists at the AHWC.

“We will monitor approximately 140 athletes, creating performance programs that work for each individual,” said Iñigo San Millán, PhD, director of the sports performance program at AHWC. “We can look at the cells in a blood sample and assess whether an athlete is fatigued or overtraining. The sample also tells us if there is muscle damage that may make an athlete more prone to injury.”

Exercise experts from AHWC are in Boulder twice a week to monitor progress as the athletes work with dietitians to make sure they are fueling and hydrating their bodies in ways that promote performance success.

“We as an athletic department and football team feel this is a great opportunity to better the health of our student-athletes,” CU head football coach Mike MacIntyre said. “No one person is the same. Our coaches will have a better understanding of recovery times and the ability to train these young people correctly to better enhance their performances. The other side of this is preventive; it should help limit muscle injuries and allow the proper time to recover.”

San Millán, a professor in family medicine at CU’s School of Medicine, says athletes also need to give themselves time to recover. “We need to start considering the recovery period part of the workout. That represents a shift in thinking but if an athlete doesn’t have the proper food and time to give their bodies a chance to recover, these grueling workouts can do more harm than good. “

San Millán is one of the world’s foremost exercise physiologists. He applies the latest scientific methodologies to help athletes, weekend warriors and people who want to improve their health and get more out of their exercise time. San Millán also has worked with professional teams and elite athletes in hockey, soccer, baseball, running, cycling, and rowing. His successes include six Pro Tour Cycling Teams and a Tour de France winner.

“Our ability to offer the latest science in optimizing human performance has been verified by elite athletes around the world,” said Jim Ellis, director of operations at AHWC. “Our experts, like Inigo, combine physiology, nutrition, psychology and coaching to ensure athletes at every level have a program that helps them excel in their desired sport. “

InventHelp®, America’s Leading Inventor Service Company, attempts to submit an invention, Atrade's Wallet Organizer, to companies for review.

Pittsburgh, PA (PRWEB) August 15, 2013

An inventor from Aurora, Colo., has developed a prototype of an accessory that helps the user organize and access the cards in their wallet. The ATRADE'S WALLET ORGANIZER makes it easier to remove cards from tight wallet slots while also providing easier identification of cards in a wallet. The design is ideal for individuals who are disabled, have arthritis or have long fingernails, but it also is great for individuals who carry several different cards in their wallet.

Additionally, the invention is easy and convenient to use, making it a great addition to any wallet.

When asked about the invention, the inventor explained, "I was inspired to develop my prototype because I rock long, pretty fingernails and find it difficult at times to remove my ID card from my tight wallet. My invention provides convenience and makes it easier to access and identify cards in the user's wallet."

The original design was submitted to the Denver office of InventHelp. It is currently available for licensing or sale to manufacturers or marketers. For more information, write Dept. 12-DVR-509, InventHelp, 217 Ninth Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15222, or call (412) 288-1300 ext. 1368.
