Robert Brenner: Waiting for Obamacare to Be Repealed, by Samuel Beckett

A timeless, nameless wasteland somewhere in Washington, DC. Two House Republicans are sitting dejectedly on a bench.

VLADIMIR: What do you want to do?

ESTRAGON: I want to repeal Obamacare.

VLADIMIR: We've already voted 497 times to repeal Obamacare.

ESTRAGON: I want to repeal Obamacare.

VLADIMIR: Ever time we vote on it, it gets voted down.

ESTRAGON: I want to repeal Obamacare.

VLADIMIR: Even if it passes House, the bill would get blocked in the Senate. We just don't have enough votes.

ESTRAGON: I want to repeal Obamacare.

VLADIMIR: And if it somehow miraculously passed the Senate, Obama would certainly veto the bill. He's not going to repeal his signature piece of legislation.

ESTRAGON: I want to repeal Obamacare.

VLADIMIR: So you see, anything we do is an empty, symbolic gesture, devoid of all reason or meaning.

ESTRAGON: I want to repeal Obamacare.

VLADIMIR (sighing heavily): Very well.

They stand up and hold a vote to repeal Obamacare. Both VLADIMIR and ESTRAGON raise their hands in favor. ESTRAGON raises both hands. The measure is soundly defeated.

VLADIMIR: Well, that's that.

ESTRAGON: I want to repeal Obamacare.

A man enters, dragging a dead horse.

VLADIMIR: Who are you?

POZZO: My name is Pozzo, and this is my mighty steed, Benghazi.

ESTRAGON: What happened to your horse?

POZZO: What do you mean, what happened to my horse?

VLADIMIR: He looks dead.

POZZO: Nothing of the sort. He's just resting.

ESTRAGON: He looks dead to me too.

POZZO: He's not dead! Here, I'll prove it to you!

POZZO savagely beats BENGHAZI with a riding crop. Nothing happens.

POZZO: You see? I told you he was just resting.

VLADIMIR: He didn't move.

POZZO: Yes he did.

ESTRAGON: I didn't see him move, either.

POZZO: He's not dead, I tell you! Would I waste my precious time and the taxpayers' valuable money beating a dead horse?

Again, POZZO savagely beats BENGHAZI with a riding crop. Again, nothing happens.

VLADIMIR: I think he's dead.

POZZO: He's just resting. He's all tuckered out after a prolonged canter.

ESTRAGON: Here, let me try.

ESTRAGON aims a few well-placed kicks at BENGHAZI's head. Again, nothing happens.

POZZO: There, he was just coming to, then you stunned him. Thoroughbreds stun easily, you know.

VLADIMIR: Is this Samuel Beckett or Monty Python?

POZZO: What?

VLADIMIR: Sorry, I was just reminded of an old skit.

ESTRAGON: Heh, heh, heh, I remember that one. About a parrot, wasn't it?

POZZO: It doesn't matter. I have plenty of other steeds.

VLADIMIR: You do?

POZZO: Yes, I do. A whole stable full of them. I could fill a whole race track, if I had a mind to. And I do.

ESTRAGON: What are their names?

POZZO: IRS, Associated Press, Fast and Furious...

VLADIMIR: The Vin Diesel car chase movie franchise?

POZZO: No, not the Vin Diesel car chase movie franchise!

ESTRAGON: I saw Fast and Furious 6. It was pretty good. Not as good as Fast and Furious 1, but not as bad as Fast and Furious 3.

VLADIMIR: Yeah, Fast and Furious 3 was a piece of shit.

POZZO: I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT THE VIN DIESEL CAR CHASE MOVE FRANCHISE! I'M TALKING ABOUT MY STABLE OF THOROUGHBRED RACE HORSES!

VLADIMIR: Oh.

ESTRAGON: No need to shout.

VLADIMIR: We're just a little punchy from all these Obamacare repeal votes.

ESTRAGON: Yeah, we're a little dopey.

POZZO: That's my point.

VLADIMIR: It is?

POZZO: That's my point exactly!

ESTRAGON: What is?

POZZO: One of these horses can beat Obama. One of these horses can drive him from the White House. Benghazi, IRS, Associated Press, Fast and Furious, Solyndra, PRISM, Aurora, Sandy Hook, it doesn't matter! And if they can't, we'll get another. And another. And another. We'll keep throwing horses at him until one of them sticks. We won't give up until we find a horse that can beat him. Because we can't give up. Because if we give up, we admit defeat. Because if we admit defeat, then the Democrats have a lock on the White House. And if the Democrats have a lock on the White House, then Hillary Clinton becomes president in 2016. And if Hillary Clinton becomes president in 2016, then it's the end. The apocalypse. The void. Nothingness.

VLADIMIR and ESTRAGON look at each other.

VLADIMIR: But Benghazi is dead.

ESTRAGON: Yeah, Benghazi is dead.

POZZO: OH!

Again, POZZO savagely beats BENGHAZI with a riding crop. Again, nothing happens. POZZO drags BENGHAZI off the stage, sweating and cursing. VLADIMIR and ESTRAGON sit back down dejectedly on the bench.

VLADIMIR: What do you want to do?

ESTRAGON: I want to repeal Obamacare. Reported by Huffington Post 3 days ago.

Microscopy session inspires teachers to integrate microscopes into school curriculum.

Westmont, IL (PRWEB) June 13, 2013

The Hooke College of Applied Sciences (HCAS) is participating in Aurora University’s Workshop Institute Program 5 (WIP5) on June 13-14.

The two-year STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Workshop, “Developing Models and Carrying Out Investigations in STEM,” is funded by the State of Illinois Math and Science Partnership Grant and is aimed at middle and high school science teachers. Participants will learn how to implement science and engineering practices of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) into science classrooms, while earning credit hours towards a Master's degree at Aurora University.

During the workshop, 19 teachers from several area school districts will visit four partner sites for hands-on sessions: microscopy at HCAS, epidemiology at the Robert Crown Center, climate change at the DuPage Children’s Museum, and alternative energies at Waste Management, Inc.

The goal of the HCAS site visit is to instill confidence and inspire teachers to integrate the use of microscopes more readily into their curriculum throughout the school year. During the visit, science teachers will develop microscopy skills and learn new microscopy methods and experiments that can be applied to a wide variety of science lessons. Each participant will receive a Motic® compound microscope with a built-in digital camera and archiving software. They will also get a book of microscope-related experiments written by John Gustav Delly, Scientific Advisor at HCAS.

HCAS instructors, as well as Phil Sumida and Tom Schaefer, high school teachers who use the microscope extensively in their own classrooms, will lead the microscopy program. Since 2008, HCAS has instructed teachers across the US on how to use microscopes in the classroom to engage their science students.

“Hooke College is committed to microscopy and microanalysis education, especially helping teachers who are on the front lines of educating tomorrow’s scientists and engineers,” said Charles Zona, vice president and dean of HCAS. “We hope this program will equip teachers with the know-how and confidence to implement the microscope as a tool of scientific investigation into their classrooms.”

Participants in this professional development program will continue their education with university faculty, follow-up days during the academic school year and a second three-week immersion class in summer 2014.

Terrorism 'Hoax' Tests Cops' Ability To Arrest; Cops Win

PHOENIX -- Lawyers are scheduled to make opening statements Wednesday in the trial of an Arizona man accused of sending his nephew into a street with a fake grenade launcher as he filmed the masked teen pointing the fake weapon at passing cars.

Prosecutors allege 40-year-old filmmaker Michael David Turley endangered his 16-year-old nephew in staging the mock terrorism scenario on July 28 at a busy intersection in northwest Phoenix. Turley has pleaded not guilty to charges of endangerment and engaging in a criminal hoax.

In a YouTube video of the hoax, a narrator identified by police as Turley said he wanted to see how long it took authorities to respond to a terrorist situation and mentioned a movie theater shooting two weeks earlier that killed 12 people in Aurora, Colo.

The teenager, whose body was draped in a sheet and whose head was wrapped in a scarf, carried the fake launcher on his shoulder as he made his way across a crosswalk. The narrator said the teen wanted to appear as intimidating as possible in hopes that people would call police.

The video also showed the first police officer to arrive on the scene, finding the 16-year-old as he stood in a driveway. The officer calmly told the teenager to put down the weapon and Turley to put down the camera. The officer didn't draw his gun.

Recordings of 911 calls showed that most people who saw the 16-year-old told authorities that they assumed the weapon was a fake, though one caller said the teen pointed the launcher at him.

Turley's arrest came nearly two months after the hoax. Police left the scene that day without making any arrests. But Turley was later arrested after police interviewed people who called emergency services and later saw the video posted on YouTube.

If convicted of both charges, Turley would face penalties ranging from only probation to more than five years in prison. Reported by Huffington Post 3 days ago.

Helicopter Target Practice Stirs Controversy In Texas

A Texas shooting range is teaming up with a helicopter company to offer gun enthusiasts a new thrill that at least one local resident calls terrifying, ABC affiliate WFAA reports. Visitors to the Big Boar Tactical shooting range near Dallas, Texas, can now partake in airborne target practice, courtesy of helicopter company GoCopter.

The new offering, Helicopter Sniper Adventure, has been introduced at a time when the gun industry is under increased public and legislative scrutiny, after tragic shootings like Newtown, Conn., and Aurora, Colo.

It also comes at a time when shooting ranges are increasingly looking for ways to offer customers unique entertainment experiences.

The Range at Lake Norman in North Carolina, for example, offers monthly ladies' nights. And Stone Hart’s Gun Club & Indoor Range in South Florida is aiming to create a favorable environment for families with in-depth firearms instruction, according to Action Target.

These new marketing strategies could be a response to the shooting range industry’s sluggish growth over the past several years. According to IBIS World –- a market research company -– the industry’s revenues have increased at just 0.8% annually since 2007.

GoCopter approached Big Boar Tactical with the idea for a new twist on target practice earlier this year, Dan Claassen of GoCopter told The Huffington Post. "For us, it's always been about the helicopter; it's very exciting to get airborne," Claassen said. "Those who use firearms on a regular basis will tell you the same story ... So we put those two loves together to make an extreme adventure."

According to its website, Helicopter Sniper Adventure charges customers $795 each to join a "platoon" for a six-hour experience that includes safety training, airborne target practice, lunch and an awards ceremony. The clients, Claassen told The Huffington Post, are primarily recreational shooters who are "looking for a new kind of experience." So far, the response from customers has been very positive, he said.

But the venture into helicopter target shooting has stirred controversy in the surrounding neighborhood, WFAA reports. "The first time they were hovering right over our two acres shooting at whatever," local resident Michael Lauer told WFAA. "You really didn't know ... were they shooting at me?"

The helicopter operators and the shooting range assured WFAA that the airborne target practice poses no danger to nearby communities. The helicopters do not leave the premises of the range, they said, and the shooters are always pointing their guns towards the ground at targets that are fortified with mounds of dirt.

Responding to questions from The Huffington Post, Claassen added that, "each participant is shadowed by a certified range safety officer that's on board the helicopter right next to them during this event. And the reason for that is that added level of safety."

Lauer, however, is not convinced. He's especially concerned about ricocheting bullets. "You just know, some day, one of them is going to hit the house or do something," he told WFAA.

Local officials and the Federal Aviation Administration told WFAA that helicopter target practice is in fact legal. Nevertheless, some residents indicated they were prepared to take the issue to court, WFAA reported.

Claassen is not deterred. "What we are doing is legal," he told The Huffington Post. "The complaint has come from one person ... This is done at a certified firing range. Gunfire happens there all the time whether we are there are not." Reported by Huffington Post 3 days ago.

Alpha Baking Company, Inc. has selected Penske Truck Leasing to serve as its commercial truck fleet maintenance service provider for its 2013 ROUSH CleanTech propane autogas powered Ford E-450 bread delivery trucks operating in the Chicago-metro area.

CHICAGO (PRWEB) June 12, 2013

Alpha Baking Company, Inc., a national bakery products distributor and home to the iconic S. Rosen’s brand, has selected Penske Truck Leasing to serve as its commercial truck fleet maintenance service provider for its 2013 ROUSH CleanTech propane autogas powered Ford E-450 bread delivery trucks operating in the Chicago-metro area. The trucks are fueled by clean-burning, domestically produced and affordable propane autogas.

Alpha Baking is introducing the 22 propane autogas trucks to reduce emissions while also continuing to meet its operational performance needs and factory warranty without a decrease in engine horsepower or torque. The new alternative fuel vehicles were officially put into service today during a commemoration ceremony with Chicago Area Clean Cities at Alpha Baking’s North Aurora truck depot.

The alternative fuel trucks will emit about two million fewer pounds of carbon dioxide over their lifetime. These easy-to-spot trucks are emblazoned with words emphasizing their fuel choice, such as “non-toxic,” “lower carbon emissions,” “progressive” and “100 percent propane powered.”

“After much research and testing the time has arrived for Alpha Baking to integrate propane autogas equipment into our fleet,” stated Bob McGuire, Alpha’s vice president and director of logistics. “The technology is here and it is affordable.

“We’re doing this because it’s the right thing to do. First, these propane-powered bread delivery trucks will emit fewer emissions and our company has been extremely progressive in doing the right thing for the environment. Second, propane is produced here in the U.S. and is therefore good for our economy. Lastly, this strategy reduces our dependency on foreign oil,” McGuire added.

“Chicagoland is the real winner today, benefitting from cleaner air and reduced noise levels due to the commitment of companies like Alpha Baking,” said Todd Mouw, vice president of sales and marketing for ROUSH CleanTech. “Alpha Baking joins a long line of progressive fleets choosing to fuel with American made and environmentally friendly propane autogas.”

Compared to conventional diesel counterparts, propane autogas vehicles reduce smog-producing hydrocarbons, virtually eliminate particulate matter, and lessen noise levels by 50 percent.

“We’re proud to support Alpha Baking and its sustainability endeavors,” stated Jack Sullivan, Penske Truck Leasing’s vice president of sales. “Penske has been maintaining alternative fueled fleets of vehicles for more than a decade around the country.”

Penske Truck Leasing currently provides full-service truck leasing and maintenance to Alpha Baking’s traditionally fueled truck fleet and will now assume maintenance of these new alternatively fueled vehicles.

Alpha Baking Company, Inc. is a privately owned manufacturer of bread, buns, and rolls. Headquartered in Chicago, Alpha Baking produces bread products for retail and fresh local distribution and frozen distribution nationwide. With production plants in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin, Alpha Baking employs over 1400 people and utilizes over 300 trucks in its delivery fleet. Well-known retail brands include Natural Ovens Bakery and S. Rosen's, which was founded in Chicago in 1909 and is served in over 90 percent of Chicagoland hot dog stands. Dangerous Storms Could Spawn A Derecho That Threatens Millions

Dangerous Storms Could Spawn A Derecho That Threatens Millions Ingredients are coming together across parts of the Midwest and Ohio Valley for a dangerous outbreak of severe weather with widespread wind damage similar to that of a derecho.

AccuWeather.com Meteorologists are concerned that an initial tornado threat Wednesday afternoon and evening could evolve into a complex of storms with widespread wind damage occurring.

Some of the cities and towns most at risk for severe weather into Wednesday night include Chicago, Ill.; Columbus, Ohio; Fort Wayne, Ind.; Aurora, Ill.; Dayton, Ohio and Louisville, Ky., to name a few.

Strictly speaking, a derecho is a widespread, long-lived wind storm that is associated with a band of rapidly moving showers or thunderstorms. These showers and thunderstorms produce wind damage over a large swath of land.

While wind gusts form derechos can sometimes reach speeds over 80 or even 100 mph, the vast majority of observed wind reports are usually between 60 and 70 mph.

Wind speeds of 60 or 70 mph can uproot trees, snap off large branches and bring down utility poles and wires. Due to the widespread nature of these wind gusts, power outages can also be far-reaching.

Additionally, these kinds of wind speeds can cause minor damage to structures, including roofs on houses, and they can easily blow around any unsecured objects left outside.

Even if a derecho does not evolve Wednesday night, powerful thunderstorms will still be quite numerous across much of Illinois, Indiana and Ohio.

*RELATED:*
What Is a Derecho?
The June 2012 Derecho Event
Severe Weather Center

Thunderstorms will begin along a corridor from east-central Iowa through northern Illinois Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday evening. The thunderstorms that develop initially in this location will have the ability to take on some rotation, and a few tornadoes are possible, especially in and around Davenport, Iowa, Rockford, Ill.; Sterling Ill.; Ottawa, Ill. and Chicago.

The thunderstorms will then begin to congeal into a bowing, or backward 'C' shaped line as they reach northern Indiana and southwestern Michigan. How much of a bowing shape the thunderstorms can take on will play a role in determining how much wind the storms can produce, and ultimately, whether or not a "derecho" fully evolves.

The worst of the storms will likely be in the afternoon and evening across western Iowa into northern Illinois and Indiana. In places such as Ohio, the most dangerous storms may hold out until the evening hours or even after dark. Still, there could still be a stray thunderstorm around even before the main line arrives.

If you will be out and about or have any plans Wednesday afternoon through the night, you will need to pay special attention to the weather as this could be a particularly dangerous situation.

Once thunderstorms develop, they will strengthen quickly, and dangerous conditions could follow soon after.

One added concern across the region will be very heavy, potentially flooding rain. This storm system will have the ability to produce a large area of 2-3 inches from Chicago into Detroit, Cleveland and Pittsburgh. Rain of this magnitude, on top of already saturated soil, will cause flash flooding and the possibility of renewed flooding or larger waterways.

Current technology has advanced enough over recent years to provide ample alert of the potential for severe weather and the approach of localized severe storms. Be sure to understand the difference between a watch and a warning. A watch means that an area is being monitored for dangerous weather. A warning means that dangerous weather is imminent. When a warning is issued, there may be too little time to travel across town or across a county to escape the storm. The time to have a plan of action and move to the general vicinity of a storm shelter or safe area is when a watch is issued.

Keep in mind that lightning is one of Mother Nature's most dangerous killers. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to the storm to be struck by lightning, even if the sun is still shining.

Moog Nabs F-15 Contract Win

East Aurora, N.Y.-based *Moog*  has won a potentially lucrative contract from *Boeing* .

On Friday, Moog announced the contract win (but not the contract value) -- a deal to have Moog design, develop, and qualify after testing the Weapons Bay Actuation System for the F-15 Silent Eagle. In laymen's terms, what it will be building is the motor that opens the airplane's "bomb-bay doors." Moog explains that the system will include "the main controller, electric power drives for both rotary and linear actuation, rotary mechanical drive trains (rotary geared actuators, angled gearboxes and torque tubes), and an energy management sub-system."

Moog has been designing such systems for the F-15 since the plane's introduction in the early 1970s. Its latest contract will have it building parts for the latest version of the plane, the F-15SE. This is also the plane that Boeing has proposed selling to South Korea as part of its $2.4 billion "F-X III" air force upgrade. Hence, a win for Boeing on that contract could mean immediate revenues for Moog.

MOVIE REVIEWS: 'Man of Steel' Super Cool or Super Meh? Patch Roswell, GA --

The latest Superman to hit the big screen, "Man of Steel" stars Henry Cavill in the role of Clark Kent/Superman and is directed by Zack Snyder ("300,""Watchmen").

*"Man of Steel" is **rated PG-13 and runs two hours and 23 minutes. *****t is now playing at **Aurora Cineplex and Studio Movie Grill in Roswell**. For more theater information, show times and pricing, click the links above******.**

Here's what the critics are saying:

Superman is in fine form in director Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel," a more serious take on the Last Son of Krypton than we've seen before. The cast is top-notch, the writing crisp (for the most part) and the direction solid and sometimes even inspired. — Ryan Smith, Fort Stewart Patch

The pacing is tight, and the movie never loses momentum – which is remarkable, considering it clocks in at nearly two and a half hours. . . Perhaps the biggest flaw in "Man of Steel" is how seriously the movie takes itself. Attempts at humor are so infrequent and out of place that they feel off-putting. Rarely does anyone crack a smile – audience members included. — Tierney Sneed, U.S. News & World Report

This film is too sober and action-obsessed to indulge in moments of exhilaration. "Steel" offers captivating production design, a few thrilling action sequences and generally good acting, but it does not equal – much less improve on – the 1978 Christopher Reeve "Superman." Or 2006's "Superman Returns" for that matter. — Carla Meyer, The Sacramento Bee

Eventually, though, what seals the movie's doom—as inventive entertainment, though perhaps not as a commercial venture—is its surrender to the lower power of coarsegrained action and computer-generated images of inexplicable banality. — Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal

Caught in the slipstream between action and angst, "Man of Steel" is a bumpy ride for sure. But there's no way to stay blind to its wonders. — Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

The only moments of real spectacle come when Superman learns to fly. He rockets through the air like a comet, and it's thrilling. There aren't enough of these gee-whiz moments of wonder in "Man of Steel." Never has a race to save the fate of humankind seemed so tedious. — Chris Nashawaty, Entertainment Weekly
