Amy Freed rebuilds an Ibsen play into ‘The Monster-Builder’

“I was an early victim of architecture,” playwright Amy Freed says, veering quickly from one thought to another as she discusses the production of her play “The Monster-Builder” at Aurora Theatre. Freed’s father, Richard Freed, who died in May, was an architect, though the title character and other elements in “Monster-Builder” have more in common with Henrik Ibsen’s “The Master Builder” than her father’s life or personality. [...] it was her mother, actor turned acting teacher and director Margaret Loft, who had a more obvious influence in shaping Freed’s career as a theater artist. Peter Brook’s ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’; ‘Hamlet’ with Stacy Keach, James Earl Jones and Colleen Dewhurst in Central Park; and Gerald Freedman’s off-Broadway production of ‘Hair.’ [...] in her “late 50s,” Freed, who lives “out in the fog bank, in the Sunset” with her husband, Chronicle Movie Critic Mick LaSalle, is one of the most prominent of the small group of nationally known playwrights who call the Bay Area home. Starting in the early ’90s, when she received rapturous reviews for the sharp wit and thick ideas of her first plays — “Still Warm,” “a postfeminist black comedy” inspired by the death of newscaster Jessica Savitch; “Claustrophilia,” about the sex habits of Edgar Allan Poe and his young cousin-bride; and “The Ghoul of Amherst,” about Emily Dickinson’s penchant for rushing to the bedsides of dying neighbors — her career quickly took off. [...] she’s been produced throughout the country, with a particularly long and fruitful relationship with Orange County’s South Coast Repertory, which has commissioned many of her works, and residencies at San Diego’s Old Globe, the Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., and Stanford University, where she teaches and directs — not to mention productions at American Conservatory Theater (“The Beard of Avon”), Berkeley Rep (“You, Nero”) and Cal Shakes (“Restoration Comedy”). Freed continued bouncing around in college, “oddly,” she says, “without a high school diploma, one of those things that was possible to do once upon a time.” At 21, “with all of two years of college acting under my belt, I returned to New York and proceeded to announce myself to the profession — with fairly predictable results, including acquiring really good cocktail-waitressing skills.” After five years of “open calls and acting in the worst imaginable marginal off-off-off-Broadway things,” she decided she needed more serious training and got accepted into ACT’s master’s of fine arts program. “He played a massive role in my shift to writing,” Freed says, We’d known each other for a couple of years and had become boyfriend and girlfriend by then. Freed has been a reliably steady and successful playwright ever since, until recently. Since writing “Monster,” which premiered in Portland, Ore., last year, she’s spent much of the last year and a half consumed with caring for her father, who was ill with Lyme disease and dementia at his home in upstate rural New York. Reported by SFGate 21 hours ago.
