October Is Sixth Consecutive Month Of Record Gun sales

$
0
0
October Is Sixth Consecutive Month Of Record Gun sales Two things happened after the most recent widely publicized US mass shootings: i) Obama once again made a concerted effort to pass anti-gun legislation, and ii) gun sales soared most likely in response to i). As we reported a month ago citing the FT, "gun sales this year could surpass the record set in 2013, when gun purchases surged after the December 2012 Sandy Hook murders."

... the calls for tighter gun laws lead to an increase in weapons sales. “Once the public hears the president on the news say we need more gun controls, it tends to drive sales,” said Mr Hyatt, who owns one of the largest gun retailers in the US. “People think, if I don’t get a gun now, it might be difficult to get one in the future. The store is crowded.”

"We don’t want our business to be based on tragedy but we have to deal with what we have no control over,” Mr Hyatt said. “And after these shootings and then the calls for tougher gun laws, we see a buying rush.”

This is not surprising: as Wired noted back in 2013, sharp spikes in gun sales usually following mass shootings for several reasons.

*The desire to protect one's self *In many cases, gun shootings followed by 24/7 media coverage prompt citizens to arm themselves, according to testimonies. In Aurora, for instance, Jake Meyers of Rocky Mountain Guns and Ammo told The Post shoppers cited self-protection when checking out new weapons. "A lot of it is people saying, 'I didn't think I needed a gun, but now I do,' " Meyers said. "When it happens in your backyard, people start reassessing — 'Hey, I go to the movies.'"

*The fear of stricter gun laws *Another logical factor is that gun owners' or soon-to-be-gun owners' sense a tide of gun control regulations following a massacre and seek to purchase guns ahead of fast-moving laws. Paul Helmke, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, spoke to this following a 60 percent uptick in gun sales in the aftermath of the Tucson shootings in 2011. "Some Americans fear tougher gun control laws in the aftermath of Saturday’s attack so they want to stock up now," he told Politico. “What it shows is maybe gun owners in Arizona and these other states feel that there’s going to be some change in the law, which is what I hope our elected officials” trying to enact. Obviously, that fear has been unfounded. Since coming into office, Obama has been virtually silent on the issue of gun control, despite the protestations of liberals.

*The feeling of uncertainty *It's important to remember, spikes in guns sales don't just coincide with shooting sprees. They also coincide with violent events of any kind, as Fredrick Kunkle at The Washington Post reported. "People also rushed to buy guns after the 1992 riots in Los Angeles and the breakdown of order in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina." That has led some industry experts and law enforcement officials to point to a general feeling of uncertainty as a driver of gun buying habits. "People often buy firearms during periods of uncertainty," Gary Kleck, a researcher at Florida State University's College of Criminology and Criminal Justice, told the paper.

Which brings us to today when the latest FBI background check data - a proxy for total gun sales in the United States as most gun purchases require a background check - when we find that, as expected, Obama's latest threat to implement stricter gun controls backfried once more, *and the month of October saw a record number of background checks.*

As the Free Beacon adds it wasn't just October: the same was true for September, August, and so on: in fact, *October was the sixth consecutive month to see a record number of checks.  *"So far in 2015 the FBI has performed 17,584,346 firearms related checks. Currently, 2015 is on pace to beat 2013’s record 21,09,273 checks."

The full breakdown:

More from the Free Beacon:

Gun rights activists have pointed to Democrats’ calls for new gun control measures as one reason why gun sales have increased. Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton has said that the Supreme Court is wrong on the Second Amendment, that Australian style mandatory gun buybacks should be considered in the United States, and that she would implement new gun control through executive action.

“Barrack Obama and Hillary Clinton are the best gun salespeople on the planet. The more they scream for new gun control laws the more guns walk off the shelves at gun stores,” said Alan Gottlieb, the head of the Second Amendment Foundation. “To quote the lyrics of Peter, Paul and Mary, ‘When will they ever learn, when will they ever learn.’”

The biggest irony, however as we reported on Sunday, is that "homicide rates have been cut in half over past 20 years as new gun ownership soared."

So thanks Obama: courtesy of your inept approach to resolving every social issue not to mention your naive, recurring attempts to uproot the Second Amendment, you are making the US safer one teleprompted, faux-emotional speech at a time. Granted, everyone knows that was not your intention, but the public will take whatever it can. Reported by Zero Hedge 7 hours ago.

A 25-foot tower-shaped sculpture inspired by common building materials, such as Tyvek sheeting and plywood, 'New Brutal' takes its title from Brutalism, a style of art characterized by a deliberate plainness.

Denver, CO (PRWEB) November 05, 2015

Black Cube announces its third pop up exhibition in Denver, featuring a work titled ‘New Brutal’ by Denver-based artist, and Black Cube fellow, Derrick Velasquez. 'New Brutal,' is a site-specific sculpture created for The Stanley Marketplace airplane hangar and is Velasquez's largest-scale work to date. The exhibition features a 25-foot tower-shaped sculpture inspired by common building materials, such as Tyvek sheeting and plywood. 'New Brutal' takes its title from Brutalism, a style of art characterized by a deliberate plainness.

Informed by Denver's recent building boom, this work takes cues from both the architectural plainness the artist sees in the design of Denver's new buildings as well as the beauty he sees in the construction process. The Stanley Marketplace is an active construction site making it the perfect location as it directly relates to the materials and concept behind the work.

The exhibition will take place at The Stanley Marketplace, located at 2501 Dallas Street in Aurora, from November 12 to December 12 on Thursdays from 6 to 8pm and Saturdays from noon to 4pm. Black Cube is also holding an opening reception on Thursday, November 12 from 6 to 9pm. RSVPs to the event are required and can be made via the Facebook event or to cstell@blackcubeart.org. All events are free and open to the public.

Velasquez was born and raised in Lodi, California, and resides in Denver. He received his Master of Fine Arts degree in Sculpture from Ohio State University, and holds dual undergraduate degrees in Art History and Studio Arts from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Velasquez works in media including performance, installation, sculpture and photography. His most recent solo exhibitions have been at Pentimenti Gallery, the Volta Art Fair in New York City, and the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art. He has also participated in recent group exhibitions at spaces such as the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, New Mexico Museum of Fine Art in Santa Fe, and Drexel University in Philadelphia.

Velasquez is a founding member and co-manager at TANK Studios, the founder of the YE$ M’am grant for artists, and a board member of the Art-Plant Artist Residency. He currently teaches in the Fine Arts departments at Metropolitan State University of Denver and the University of Denver. Velasquez is represented by Robischon Gallery (Denver, CO) as well as Pentimenti Gallery (Philadelphia, PA).

Poll Finds Many in Metro Denver Personally Affected by Homelessness and Supportive of Investing in Solutions

Denver, CO (PRWEB) November 05, 2015

At a kickoff event at History Colorado Center this morning, the leadership of CLOSE TO HOME launched a five-year campaign to raise awareness, increase understanding, and move Coloradans to speak up and make a meaningful difference in addressing homelessness across Metro Denver. The campaign was developed by a range of community stakeholders and is led by a coalition of nonprofit, government, and business leaders together with individuals who have personally experienced homelessness.

CLOSE TO HOME is jointly led by:
—Community Solutions
—The Denver Foundation
—Denver Homeless Out Loud
—Homeless Liaisons (individuals who have personally experienced homelessness)
—Metro Denver Chamber of Commerce
—Metro Denver Homeless Initiative
—Metro Mayors Caucus
—Governor Hickenlooper's Homeless Initiative Team
Click here to read statements from members of the leadership team.

This morning’s event included remarks from former Miss Colorado USA, Blair Griffith; Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock; Aurora Mayor Stephen D. Hogan; Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce CEO, Kelly Brough; The Denver Foundation’s President and CEO, David Miller; and CLOSE TO HOME partner, Leanne Wheeler; with video comments by Lieutenant Governor Joe Garcia; and Jan Watkins, a former TV news producer who experienced homelessness.

CLOSE TO HOME will be implemented by a grassroots network composed of diverse stakeholders who care about people experiencing homelessness in Metro Denver. Three community collaboratives received grants from The Denver Foundation to work together to increase understanding, encourage engagement, and identify specific actions that will lead to systems and policy changes that address homelessness.

Participating organizations are Aurora@Home, Aurora Chamber of Commerce, Bank of the West, CBS/Channel 4, Colorado Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Colorado Council of Churches, Community College of Denver, Family Tree, Mile High Behavioral Healthcare, Warren Village, and Women with a Cause Foundation.

The idea for the campaign began in a listening tour conducted by The Denver Foundation. Residents across the seven-county Metro Denver area said far too many people cannot meet their basic needs, especially housing, hunger, or access to basic medical care. They said we need to increase understanding, compassion, and get more people engaged to solve these challenges.

In January, 2015, the Foundation commissioned a public opinion poll to learn more about Metro Denver residents’ awareness, understanding, and values related to homelessness. Among the poll’s key findings:
—A majority of residents (58%) see it as an “extremely or very serious” problem in the Metro region.
—Metro Denver residents’ predominant image of the homeless is single males (66%). Few (19%) were aware that more than half of those experiencing homelessness are families and children.
—Many residents have personally experienced a period of homelessness (1 in 10), and nearly half (43%) have a close friend or family member who has been homeless.
—Only 7% of residents believe they have a “major responsibility” to play in helping to address homelessness.
—A strong majority (88%) believes the problem of homelessness in Metro Denver can be improved or even solved.

“We have strong data and the input of a wide array of community members across Metro Denver, including individuals who have personally experienced homelessness, which confirms a real need to increase understanding about homelessness—who is affected, why, and potential remedies,” said Monica Buhlig, Director of Basic Human Needs at The Denver Foundation. “The CLOSE TO HOME campaign provides a platform for citizen involvement – a critical component that has been missing from efforts to address homelessness. We know people care, but they often don’t know how best to help. And we know that seemingly small actions add up and provide the support needed to drive significant change.”

The goals of CLOSE TO HOME are to:
—Mobilize Metro Denver residents to address the underlying causes of homelessness.
—Increase understanding so that Metro Denver residents experiencing homelessness are viewed by others, and regard themselves, as valuable members of our communities.
—Make homelessness a priority issue in Metro Denver.

Additional information and media resources are available at http://www.CloseToHomeCO.org.

NASA: Sun stripping away Martian atmosphere, left dry planet

NASA: Sun stripping away Martian atmosphere, left dry planet CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — NASA's Mars-orbiting Maven spacecraft has discovered that the sun likely robbed the red planet of its once-thick atmosphere and water.

On Thursday, scientists reported that even today, the solar wind is stripping away about 100 grams of atmospheric gas every second. That's about a quarter-pound a second lost to the stream of charged particles shooting away from the sun at 1 million mph (1.61 million kph).

Big solar storms traveling at twice that speed increase the escape rate by 10 to 20 times — and more. Because of their prevalence billions of years ago, these storms would have been enough to gut the atmosphere of ancient Mars and transform it from a moist, warm place potentially capable of microscopic life to the cold, dry desert of today.

"I can't help but imagine hamburgers flying out of the Martian atmosphere, one per second," Maven scientist Dave Brain told reporters with a smile. "It's instead oxygen and carbon dioxide that are leaving the planet, which are important both for water and for the climate of the planet overall."

These latest Mars findings by robotic scouts such as Maven are a key part of NASA's push to send human explorers to the red planet in the 2030s. Just over a month ago, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter revealed evidence of salt water trickling down Martian slopes, at least in the summer. NASA's next mission begins in March with the launch of another orbiting explorer.

Principal scientist Bruce Jakosky and his team reported that during massive solar ejections of gas in March, the spacecraft noticed oxygen ions were flung higher into the atmosphere than expected. At the same time, streams of fast-moving magnetic activity shot 3,100 miles out into space.

That led the researchers to conclude Mars' atmospheric decline may have been driven in large part by major solar events such as this, early in the planet's history.

The atmosphere likely would have disappeared over a period of a few hundred-millions years.. Mars no longer has a global magnetic field, but when it did 4 billion years ago, that would have prevented this wholesale loss of atmosphere, the researchers said. Earth's strong magnetic field seals in our own atmosphere, preventing direct erosion by the solar wind.

Jakosky said further analysis will allow scientists to better define the atmospheric escape rate of ancient Mars. In any event, given the current loss, the existing thin atmosphere would be gone in another few billions of years, he noted, although the gas is also locked up in the polar caps and in the subsurface.

Jakosky and Brain both work at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Their findings appear in this week's Science journal. The issue includes four studies conducted by the spacecraft, which has been circling Mars and studying its atmosphere for the past year. Maven, about the size of a school bus, was launched from Cape Canaveral in 2013.

Maven also was able to observe a Martian aurora thought to be in the same category as Earth's northern lights. Researchers suspect the remnant magnetic field of Mars' crust is driving the auroras.
