Maddow Blasts Law Requiring Aurora Shooting Victim's Parents To Pay Gun Manufacturers

Rachel Maddow debuted an Outrage-O-Meter on her show Thursday night, and quickly put it to the test with a story about the ongoing trial of James Holmes, who opened fire in a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, in July 2012.

Maddow opened her show with heart-rending footage of the Aurora trial. She highlighted the testimony of Brenton Lowak, whose friend Jessica Ghawi -- a 24-year-old aspiring sports reporter -- died in the shooting.

Here’s the part that set off the Outrage-O-Meter: Jessica's parents have been ordered by a judge in Colorado to pay $220,000 to the gun manufacturers who sold Holmes his weapon.

The parents unsuccessfully sued the retailers who made the firearm that killed their daughter. Colorado state law requires that plaintiffs who sue the manufacturers of gun products pay the companies' legal fees if they lose.

“That’s not a typo,” Maddow said, adding, “The mother and father of the victim who died in the Aurora mass shooting have just been ordered to pay a quarter-million dollars to the gun makers who sold the bullets that were used in the Aurora mass shooting -- the parents of the girl who was killed.”

“If you, for whatever reason, sue anyone having to do with the making of guns and if, for any reason, you lose that lawsuit, you’re going to have to pay -- big,” Maddow continued. “It only goes that one direction, too.”

Ghawi's parents are appealing the decision.-- This feed and its contents are the property of The Huffington Post, and use is subject to our terms. It may be used for personal consumption, but may not be distributed on a website. Reported by Huffington Post 2 hours ago.

Magna to move its corporate headquarters from Aurora Chateau closer to Pearson airport

$

By the end of 2017, Automotive supplier Magna International (TSE:MG) will move its corporate headquarters from the Loire Valley fortress like building in Aurora, ON (about 50km. north of Toronto) to a new building in nearby King City, which is closer to Pearson airport, Canada’s largest.

The 200,000 square feet facility, said to be more austere than the current baroque style building, will bring together corporate, group head office operations and a research and development lab in one location housing 625 employees.

The move is not just physical; it is ‘ideological’ in that it is meant to add more distance between Magna and Frank Stronach, who founded the company in 1957, who is no longer its chairman.

According to BNN, sources close to the company said that the current headquarters are euphemistically known as the “royal palace”, adding that customers never visited the opulent building. Rather, they conducted business in the more modest companies of the Magna group such as Tesma.

Magna has relinquished control of the Aurora building, leasing it from Granite Real Estate Investment Trust – essentially Magna’s real estate arm.

Magna has European and US head offices as well, in Vienna, Austria and Troy, Michigan respectively.

Earlier in May, the automotive supplier announced Thursday a net profit of C$465 million in the first quarter, up 18% compared to the same period last year and slightly above expectations.

Net income came in at C$1.12/share, or 2 cents above analysts' consensus, despite sales dropping 7% to C$8.3 billion in the first three months of the year. Magna attributed the drop to the lower value of the Euro and the Canadian dollar against the US currency.

Excluding currency effects, sales would have grown by 3% in the quarter, said Magna in a statement.

Operating income totaled C$642 million, compared with 605 million in the same quarter last year.

Sales of fully assembled vehicles were down 28% to C$584 million, as volumes dropped 23% to 27 000 units in the three months concerned.

Starting this year, Magna will dispose of 36 factories employing about 12,000 people in Europe, North America and Asia in order to focus on key areas of vehicles, such as preformed parts or components of activities for which Magna has established a joint venture in China. The Fallen Served for our Freedom

Memorial Day is all about celebrating the lives of the men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. The United States is made great because of their heroism. Their lives are remembered, honored, and celebrated by all of us, including the friends, family and fellow service members who knew them best.

Sadly, this month we lost six U.S. Marines when their helicopter went down during a relief mission for those impacted by the Nepal earthquake. Those Marines included U.S. Marine Corporal Sara Medina of Aurora, IL. Our hearts go out to the families of these Marines and we will never forget their great contribution to our country.

This is also a time to reflect on the lives that have been lost in the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. We have lost 6,861 brave American soldiers in these wars, and thousands more have been injured. We will forever honor their patriotism and the bravery of those lost in prior wars.

So this Memorial Day, as families and friends gather, we must pay homage to those who gave their lives for us. We must do everything we can to support the loved ones of the fallen as we mark Memorial Day and always. The United States is the greatest country in the world because of their sacrifice.
