AURORA, Co. – A year-old Siberian Husky has been sentenced to death after killing a rabbit in a backyard.

Nika, the Husky, was in her owners’ neighbor’s yard when allegedly killed the rabbit on April 23rd. Her owners, Keith and Rachel Keremes, were away on their honeymoon at the time.

On May 2nd, a City of Aurora Judge sentenced Nika to death.

Because this ruling was made a mere five days after the Keremes returned from their vacation, they were unable to get a lawyer or provide evidence before the sentenced was handed down. As such, the couple feels that they have been denied due process.

In an effort to convince the judge to revoke the ruling, the Keremes have agreed to build an additional fence that would protect the boundary of their yard and the neighbor’s. The judge, however, continues to remain steadfast in demanding the dog’s execution.

This infraction is Nika’s first offense; by sentencing Nika to death for her first offense, the City of Aurora is breaking its own law.

Now, the Colorado couple has started a petition to save their Husky, who has no violent history and is described as being “beloved” by the Keremes’ friends and family.

The dog will be kept in a “tiny cage” in the Aurora Animal Shelter until the appeal date, which could be months away. Furthermore, the couple will be charged for the time the dog is forced to spend in the shelter.

On May 5th, the jubilant couple posted on the “Save Nika” Facebook group that with the help of a “fantastic attorney” and the publicity their case had attracted, the City of Aurora has agreed to negotiate with the couple.

Nika will be sent to live with Rachel’s parents in Ohio until the couple moves out of Aurora; until that time, Nika will be moved to the much improved conditions that can be found in the Mile High Husky Rescue, where she will have more space and the couple will be able to visit her.

The couple announced that they are “closing down the gofundme.com page, claiming victory with our petition, and grateful for each and every one of you.”

10th Annual Survey Reveals A Decade of Innovation and Disruption in Market Research

Confirmit 2013 Market Research Technology Report highlights key industry changes over the past ten years.

New York, NY and Oslo, Norway and London, UK (PRWEB) May 29, 2014

Mobile technology, social media and multi-modal research have been the most positive technological developments in Market Research over the past decade, but firms have been challenged by disruptive elements including DIY surveys, data privacy and the displacement of fixed-line telephony during that time.

These are some of the key findings of the Confirmit 2013 Market Research Technology and Innovation Survey, produced by meaning ltd.

The survey, which analyzes the technologies and developments that shape the M`R industry, also reveals that there has been a significant shift towards working with businesses on their Voice of the Customer (VoC) and Customer Experience Management (CEM) programs by research companies.

The study reveals 70% of research firms are now undertaking some VoC or CEM work and a majority are using NPS in some way. However, ‘traditional’ customer satisfaction studies are by far the most prevalent way of exploring the Voice of the Customer.

Tim Macer, managing director at meaning said, “The research industry clearly is adapting to the new data-rich, ‘always on’ landscape that we find ourselves in today. VoC is a natural place for research companies to be, but it will not be credible or sustainable if the industry does not embrace innovative methods to deliver a more holistic and integrated product. There are noticeable gaps in provision when it comes to integrating research with non-MR sources of data, and in dealing with the explosion of comment and other unstructured data.”

Meanwhile, the mobile channel remains a key area of development potential for research firms, according to the survey.

Ole Andresen, director of product management at Confirmit said, “The last ten years have been dubbed the ‘decade of the mobile device’ and mobile has certainly been a key technology for MR organizations. The growth in this area shows no sign of slowing down, with 42% of MR organizations now able to deliver surveys via mobile app, and 70% able to run them via mobile browser.”

“The survey findings reflect our own experiences at Confirmit, with many customers now seeking to embrace the mobile channel, using either mobile app, browser or even SMS, across the different programs they run,” added Andresen.

Other key findings of the survey include:·     Data privacy issues are a major disrupter for organizations collecting large amounts of data
·     The use of the web as a data collection tool remains strong, but CATI is decreasing
·     There is a measurable move towards integrated MR software platforms, and away from separate tools
·     PowerPoint remains the most popular method of delivering research results, although the use of dashboards is expected to grow
·     10% of firms use word clouds as the main tool for presenting text analytics results – but their usefulness as a standalone tool is questioned.

This year sees the 10th anniversary of the survey. The findings are based on the responses of 240 MR firms globally. Click here to access the full 2013 Market Research Technology Report.

Brad Pitt And Angelina Jolie's Kids Walk The Red Carpet At The 'Maleficent' Premiere Look who it is!

Five of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's six kids walked the red carpet at the Los Angeles premiere of Disney's "Maleficent" on Wednesday night, May 28. The youngest of the bunch, Vivienne Jolie-Pitt, who also plays young Aurora in the film, was the only family member missing as her older siblings Maddox, 12, Pax, 10, Zahara, 9, Shiloh, 8, and twin brother Knox, 5, posed with their famous parents for an adorable photo op.

Maddox and Shiloh looked adorable in vests while Pax and Knox wore white shirts with casual suits. Zahara sported some funky pants and a basketball jersey, accessorizing her hair with flowers, as her mom donned an interesting black Versace dress.

"Every day the focus was the audience and my children and, 'Would they find this funny? Would they find this cool? Is this voice something they like or they don't like and is this hat something they like or don't like?' And it was just the best part of being an actor," Jolie told reporters of playing Maleficent. "My job is to entertain and I'm going to do my best -- even if I fall on my face and make a fool of myself -- to hope that I can do that for people of all ages, but especially children."

In a shocking turn of events, Pitt was assaulted at the premiere by notorious Hollywood prankster, Vitalii Seduik, who most recently tried to crawl under America Ferrera's dress at the Cannes Film Festival. Seduik allegendly punched Pitt in the face, police told KTLA, and has been booked on suspicion of battery and is being held on $20,000 bail. Pitt was apparently fine after the incident and continued to sign autographs for fans. Reported by PopEater 3 days ago.

Photographer Captures Tar Sands 'Destruction' From Above

Photographer and pilot Alex MacLean wanted to learn more about the Keystone XL pipeline, which if approved will carry oil from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico, so he decided to take pictures from above of the tar sands that will supply oil to the project.

What he found shocked him.

"The scale of the operation is staggering," MacLean told The Huffington Post. It's "mind-boggling," he said, how expansive it is, and how much money is being poured into drilling and strip mining for the viscous petroleum product that will give the Keystone XL pipeline its oil.
Hot waste fills a tailing pond at the Suncor mining site in Alberta.MacLean took photos from 1,000 feet above northern Alberta's oil operations. The tar sands, more commonly referred to in Canada as the oil sands, are the world's third-largest petroleum reserve and underlie an area roughly the size of Florida. While the Alberta government says only 3 percent of the area is suitable for strip mining, in which forest and bog "overburden" is stripped away, that still amounts to about 1,850 square miles -- an area larger than the state of Rhode Island.

Flying above wilderness beauty punctuated by slick oil sheens and puffs of smoke from a refinery, "you realize how wasteful we are," MacLean said.

As of early 2013, mining operations had disturbed about 276 square miles of boreal forest in the region, according to the Pembina Institute, a nonprofit Canadian think tank focused on energy. The area totals over half the size of the city of Los Angeles.

The project "impressed on me, more than ever, just what the demand is for petroleum products downstream." MacLean said, and how that demand drives "vast destruction of natural systems."

According to MacLean, some Albertans supported the idea of the project, but felt the growth has been too rapid and poorly managed. But among scientists and researchers, he said, there's a "real feeling that the environment is being poisoned, with both water and air pollution."
Checkerboard clearing of the overburden at the Syncrude Aurora North Mine Site in Alberta.A University of Toronto study published earlier this year in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that official environmental impact assessments have likely underestimated toxic emissions from tar sands operations. Another recent study found that the Alberta work is polluting groundwater and the nearby Athabasca River.

MacLean previously told Fast Company he hopes his work "will expose why this fuel is so carbon intensive and how the extraction process is polluting both the water and air."

The oil derived from the tar sands bitumen is 14 to 17 percent more carbon intensive over its lifecycle than traditional crude. If built, the Keystone XL pipeline would bring 830,000 barrels of this oil to market every day -- adding several million metric tons of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere annually.

"After seeing it in person, it seems like a really bad idea," MacLean told HuffPost of the pipeline. "It looks like really organized bad behavior on a large scale, for what the implications are."

*See more of MacLean's photos below:*

MacLean's work was made possible with support from the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting and The GroundTruth Project as part of a report to be published on GlobalPost next month. Reported by Huffington Post 3 days ago.
