This Artist Swapped Iconic Characters' Skin Colors In 'Racebent Disney'

Would it matter if Ariel from "The Little Mermaid" were Indian? Hispanic? What about Middle Eastern?

Racebent Disney, a project by artist TT Bret that flips the skin colors and cultures of some of our favorite classic cartoon characters, is posing those questions.

The Internet recently embraced Genderbent Disney, a project with a similar concept that changed Disney characters' genders. Bret, who was part of that project, was inspired to give the original idea a twist and post the outcomes on Tumblr.

To Bret, the project was mostly about having fun.

"I wasn't focused on historical accuracy or content, and I didn't have any political agenda in mind," Bret told The Huffington Post in an email. "I just enjoy working with character design and I'd love to see a little more diversity in Disney, and media in general. It was simply an exploration of race and culture from an artistic standpoint."

The Disney Princess Effect On Baby Names

$

These days you may see little girls running around in Elsa dresses -- or their parents trying to find a store that hasn't sold out of them -- but over the years, other Disney princesses have been more influential in the baby naming department.

The company began heavily marketing Disney Princesses in 2000 with eight original members: Ariel, Belle, Cinderella, Jasmine, Mulan, Pocahontas, Sleeping Beauty (Aurora) and Snow White. Since then, three more characters have been added: Tiana from "The Princess and The Frog" in 2009, Rapunzel from "Tangled" in 2011 and Merida from "Brave" in 2012. Elsa and Anna from last year's "Frozen" are considered to be "princesses-in-waiting."

Disney says in publicity materials, "As women grow up with the Disney Princess characters, they are inspired by their stories, personalities and inner qualities and pass along their love for these heroines to their own daughters."

It turns out parents are passing princess stories, and names on to their children. According to the Social Security Administration, in 2013, the year after "Brave" was released, the number of girls named after lead character Merida jumped 474 percent. The number of baby girls named Tiana nearly doubled in 2010, the year after "The Princess and The Frog" was released. The trend has appeared for other Disney princesses and popular female characters. Even the name "Princess" has seen an increase in popularity.

Disney's princess campaign has been an obvious marketing win, but is it a win for little girls?

“There is mixed evidence," said Sarah Coyne, a faculty member at the School of Family Life at Brigham Young University who researched "The Disney Princess Effect.""Princesses are not great in that they promote gender stereotypes, but we also found some positives -- like better body image and more pro-social behavior.”

*Here are some popular Disney names that saw a bump after a major movie release:**And here are some other Disney names that haven't had a big effect on baby naming trends: **And last but not least, the princesses-in-waiting. It's too soon to tell if the Frozen effect will apply to baby names, but here's what we know about Anna and Elsa so far: *

One of the most iconic moments in cinema was re-imagined for Disney's live-action twist on their own 1959 classic, “Sleeping Beauty.” Angelina Jolie stars as Maleficent, the villainess who so despised Princess Aurora, here played by Elle Fanning, that she put a curse on her. The princess would prick her finger on a the needle of a spinning wheel and fall into an eternal slumber.

There's an added level of intrigue in the scene as it plays out in Walt Disney Pictures’ “Maleficent.” Interspersed with Aurora's slow, mesmerized walk toward the spinning wheel needle were scenes of Maleficent herself riding at breakneck speed toward the castle.

Was she rushing in to stop her own curse from being fulfilled, or did she have some other business to attend to at that exact moment? Answers are coming in just a few short weeks, as “Maleficent” will be released in theaters nationwide on May 30, 2014.

The film co-stars Sharlto Copley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple, Lesley Manville, and Sam Riley. Written by Linda Wolverton, it was directed by Robert Stromberg and produced by Joe Roth.

Police unions push for medical coverage of PTSD

DENVER (AP) — Police unions across the U.S. are pushing for officers to be able to collect workers' compensation benefits if they suffer post-traumatic stress disorder, whether they got it from the general stress of police work or from responding to a deadly shooting rampage. [...] some police chiefs and municipal leaders oppose lawmakers' efforts, even in states such as Connecticut and Colorado, the scenes of some of the deadliest massacres in recent years. Legislation expanding benefits to cover the disorder died in Colorado, where officers responded to a mass shooting at an Aurora movie theater in July 2012. Colorado lawmakers eliminated language that would have presumed an officer had job-induced PTSD if he was diagnosed after using deadly force, witnessing a death, being injured or becoming ill on the job, which police chiefs thought was too broad. Bentley appealed to the state Supreme Court, which denied his claim, saying the law did not provide mental health benefits for officers because they are trained in the use of deadly force and know that they may have to use it.
