Online Nursing Programs Key to Transforming Nursing Education

Online nursing schools like American Sentinel University are helping to transform the nursing education by making higher education available to a wider pool of nursing students – including working nurses and health care professionals who have constraints on their time or live in rural areas far from traditional classrooms – resulting in more highly qualified nurses to fill needed health care positions sooner. Aurora, CO (PRWEB) January 27, 2014

Nursing schools are turning away thousands of qualified applicants despite the projected nurse shortage simply because there is also a shortage of nursing educators. But nursing schools that use a distance learning model, like American Sentinel University, are helping to transform nursing education by making higher education available to a wider pool of students.

“The supply of nursing educators is dependent upon the number of nursing graduates choosing to pursue advanced education,” says Vi Wilkes, MA, MSN, Ed.D., RN, associate professor of graduate nursing programs at American Sentinel University. “Through the addition of online courses and degree options, nursing schools are able to enroll more students, which is important today with the faculty shortage.”

According to a survey by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), 75,587 nursing school applicants were denied admission in 2011 alone. Within this total, the rejected applicants included 58,327 from entry-level BSN programs, 2,906 from RN-to-BSN, 13,198 from master’s and 1,156 from doctoral programs.

The reasons reported by nursing schools for turning away qualified students included not only lack of faculty, but insufficient classroom space and clinical teaching sites. In other words, brick and mortar institutions lack capacity to accommodate the ever-increasing numbers of students.

Wilkes says it is important for the nursing industry to fill open faculty positions in nursing schools by attracting more nurses to a career in education, but first nurses must earn an advanced degree.

Need for More Educated Nurses
To achieve this goal, she says that the nursing profession must let go of ingrained cultural beliefs about traditional methods for nursing education.
“Nursing schools need to rethink the ways in which clinical experiences are obtained and the way nursing education in general is delivered,” says Wilkes.

The rising generation of nurse educators will need to look toward non-traditional education models that can “scale up” the number of students they can accommodate at all education levels from the nursing diploma through the doctoral degree.

The nursing industry needs not only more nurses, but also more educated nurses, says Wilkes. Both the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching have echoed Wilkes – nurses should progress to higher levels of schooling.

Wilkes says that transformation innovations are encouraged when there are shortages of faculty and clinical sites. Additionally, there is a need to increase enrollment of potential BSN students for those students to continue their education further in master’s and doctorate programs.

Through the addition of online courses and degree options, nursing schools are able to enroll more students and tailor the online courses in a way to make the most out of both the students’ and faculty’s time in a flexible, anytime, anywhere asynchronous modality.

“Since online schools can leverage technology for more efficient and effective instruction, we’re not locked into a traditional semester schedule – so our flexibility allows students to start classes during every month of the year, according to what is convenient for them,” says Wilkes.

Wilkes believes the distance learning model is beneficial to the industry because it’s not tied to a specific location and can make higher education available to more students – including working nurses and health care professionals who have constraints on their time or live in rural areas far from traditional classrooms.

In addition, she points out that online degree options will attract more nursing students and that the students will complete their degree earlier, resulting in more highly qualified nurses to fill needed health care positions sooner.

She notes that online schools can also hire the best faculty from all over the country and can add adjunct faculty as enrollments increase.

Wilkes says concepts like simulation centers and using staff nurses – rather than graduate-level nurse educators – as preceptors and coaches at clinical sites are also worth consideration. State nursing boards might also remove barriers to non-traditional educational approaches – specifically those that restrict a graduate’s eligibility to be licensed.

“To achieve greater capacity, we need transformational innovations in the ways we educate nurses – even if they disrupt or displace more traditional models of nursing education,” says Wilkes. “With more innovation in education comes a higher level of knowledge and competence in nursing practice.”

ACEC, a private and prestigious association of senior level executive coaches working with the top tier of organizations, announced today that two of its members will present programs in February which are endorsed by the association and its professional university—University of Continuing Executive Coaching Education.

(PRWEB) January 27, 2014

Barbara Singer Cheng, CEO of Executive Core and a recipient of ACEC’s 2014 distinguished Thought Leader award (along with Dr. Marshall Goldsmith) for her work in supporting lifelong learning for senior level executive coaches, announced that Executive Core will present the workshop, "Creating a Coaching Culture From the Top Down: Advanced Skills & Practices," at the exquisite Walden Inn in Aurora, Ohio on February 3-6. 2014.

Mrs. Cheng stated. "Our goal is to periodically bring together an elite, hand-selected group of talent management professionals. Besides learning from each other, they will experience an advanced coaching event created for senior level executive coaches globally." With this in mind, Barbara’s program provides coaches with a deeper understanding of executive and organizational contexts, and powerful coaching interventions. Participants will:·     Explore the traits of vibrant organizations who have developed a culture of coaching
·     Become a more credible and trusted resource to their executive clients
·     Obtain re-certification hours for both ACEC, CEU’s and ICF (International Coach Federation) CCE’s
·     Achieve certification in "The Language of Influence"—a 360° survey that measures predictors of executive success
·     Become more proficient in applying a robust coaching framework to complex business coaching challenges
·     Hone and master their unique and powerful presence that communicates confidence and inspires executives to engage fully in development

CB Bowman, CEO and founder of ACEC stated, "Barbara brings to the table a lot of fire power, so be prepared for a mind explosion. Since Barbara won the Thought Leader award, she has become member of ACEC, a sponsor to ACEC and a mentor to me. I could not be happier as she is one of only a handful of people who appreciates the complexity of a dyslexic INTJ, she and of course someone like Malcolm Gladwell as indicated in his book "David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants."

Barbara is an accomplished speaker, facilitator, executive coach and consultant. Prior to Executive Core, she held two SVP roles at Lore International Institute, made partner in her early 30’s, and helped lead the organization from start-up to among the top 25% globally ranked coaching firms before it was acquired by Korn Ferry International.

Barbara has served C-suite leaders around the world in organizations like Cisco Systems, HP, Bristol-Myers Squibb, GE, Lucent, Pfizer, Corus Media, Heidrick & Struggles, and many others, and across Canada through the Judy Project (sponsored by Microsoft, & the University of Toronto).

Along with Barbara, Anna Pool, also an ACEC member and part of the Executive Core’s inner circle of coaches will be co-facilitating this program. Anna is a strong partner to Barbara, having worked closely for many years. Anna’s background includes experience at the vice president and Board levels of an alternative health care facility benchmarked by the Harvard Medical School as one of the most innovative and effective of its kind. She is the former director of Organizational Consulting for Lore International. She served as an organizational learning consultant to Ford’s New Business Leader program, an innovative, action-learning program that was benchmarked by the International Consortium on Executive Development as among the best in the world. Anna is the author of the Bronze Telly Award winning video series, Effective People Skills.

Both Barbara and Anna exemplify the values of the Association of Corporate Executive coaches in their spirit and commitment to life-long learning for executive coaches. We are honored to have both Barbara and Anna, as part of our organization.

Cut Off the NSA's Juice

The National Security Agency depends on huge computers that guzzle electricity in the service of the surveillance state. For the NSA's top executives, maintaining a vast flow of juice to keep Big Brother nourished is essential -- and any interference with that flow is unthinkable.

But interference isn't unthinkable. And in fact, it may be doable.

Grassroots activists have begun to realize the potential to put the NSA on the defensive in nearly a dozen states where the agency is known to be running surveillance facilities, integral to its worldwide snoop operations.

Organizers have begun to push for action by state legislatures to impede the electric, water and other services that sustain the NSA's secretive outposts.

Those efforts are farthest along in the state of Washington, where a new bill in the legislature -- the Fourth Amendment Protection Act -- is a statutory nightmare for the NSA. The agency has a listening post in Yakima, in the south-central part of the state.

The bill throws down a challenge to the NSA, seeking to block all state support for NSA activities violating the Fourth Amendment. For instance, that could mean a cutoff of electricity or water or other state-government services to the NSA site. And the measure also provides for withholding other forms of support, such as research and partnerships with state universities.

Here's the crux of the bill: "It is the policy of this state to refuse material support, participation, or assistance to any federal agency which claims the power, or with any federal law, rule, regulation, or order which purports to authorize, the collection of electronic data or metadata of any person pursuant to any action not based on a warrant that particularly describes the person, place, and thing to be searched or seized."

If the windup of that long sentence has a familiar ring, it should. The final dozen words are almost identical to key phrases in the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

In recent days, more than 15,000 people have signed a petition expressing support for the legislation. Launched by RootsAction.org, the petition is addressed to the bill's two sponsors in the Washington legislature -- Republican Rep. David Taylor, whose district includes the NSA facility in Yakima, and Democrat Luis Moscoso from the Seattle area.

Meanwhile, a similar bill with the same title has just been introduced in the Tennessee legislature -- taking aim at the NSA's center based in Oak Ridge, Tenn. That NSA facility is a doozy: with several hundred scientists and computer specialists working to push supercomputers into new realms of mega-surveillance capacities.

A new coalition, OffNow, is sharing information about model legislation. The group also points to known NSA locations in other states including Utah (in Bluffdale), Texas (San Antonio), Georgia (Augusta), Colorado (Aurora), Hawaii (Oahu) and West Virginia (Sugar Grove), along with the NSA's massive headquarters at Fort Meade in Maryland. Grassroots action and legislative measures are also stirring in several of those states.

One of the key organizations in such efforts is the Bill of Rights Defense Committee, where legal fellow Matthew Kellegrew told me that the OffNow coalition "represents the discontent of average people with ... business-as-usual failure to rein in out-of-control domestic spying by the NSA and other federal departments like the FBI. It is a direct, unambiguous response to a direct, unambiguous threat to our civil liberties."

In the process -- working to counter the bipartisan surveillance-state leadership coming from the likes of President Obama, House Speaker John Boehner, the House Intelligence Committee's chair Mike Rogers and the Senate Intelligence Committee's chair Dianne Feinstein -- activists urging a halt to state-level support for the NSA include people who disagree on other matters but are determined to undermine the Big Brother hierarchies of both parties.

"By working together to tackle the erosion of the Fourth Amendment presented by bulk data collection," Kellegrew said, "people from across partisan divides are resurrecting the lost art of collaboration and in the process, rehabilitating the possibility of a functional American political dialogue denied to the people by dysfunction majority partisan hackery."

From another vantage point, this is an emerging faceoff between reliance on cynical violence and engagement in civic nonviolence.

Serving the warfare state and overall agendas for U.S. global dominance to the benefit of corporate elites, the NSA persists in doing violence to the Constitution's civil-liberties amendments -- chilling the First, smashing the Fourth and end-running the Fifth.

Meanwhile, a nascent constellation of movements is striving to thwart the surveillance state, the shadowy companion of perpetual war.

This is a struggle for power over what kind of future can be created for humanity.

It's time to stop giving juice to Big Brother.

James Holmes returned to the courtroom on Monday, two years after he allegedly shot into an audience at a movie theater in Aurora, Colo., killing 12 people and injuring 70. A Centennial, Colo. court is trying to determine whether Holmes should receive a second psychiatric evaluation, as he is pleading not guilty by reason of insanity.

Holmes' mental health was the catalyst for Colorado legislators to pass some of the most wide-ranging mental health-care legislation in the United States. Holmes, who is suspected of having an extreme case of bipolar disorder, slipped through the cracks of Colorado's mental health-care system, leading to an egregious loss of life, according to The New York Times. With its revamped system, Colorado aims to catch unstable patients before they become a danger to society. Read more...

Gun Control Ad Starring Gabrielle Giffords to Air Before State of the Union

Gun Control Ad Starring Gabrielle Giffords to Air Before State of the Union In a commercial set to run just before and after President Obama's January 28 State of the Union (SOTU) address, Gabrielle Giffords looks into the camera and says, "Congress is afraid of the gun lobby."

According to the Associated Press , Giffords will push background checks as a way to "make it harder for criminals and the mentally ill to get guns." She will say, "9 out of 10 Americans support background checks."

On December 4, Breitbart News reported a CNN poll that showed "50 percent of Americans oppose more gun control," and only "49 percent" support it.

Breitbart News also reported those who killed innocents at the Mall in Columbia, Arapahoe High School, the DC Navy Yard, LAX, and the Aurora Theater, would not have been stopped by background checks because they all submitted to background checks to acquire their firearms.

As Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) admitted last year, the failed Senate background check bill would not have prevented Adam Lanza from carrying out his heinous crime at Sandy Hook Elementary.

Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly "are scheduled to appear before the Washington State legislature Tuesday, [just] hours before Obama's SOTU speech." They will be there "to testify in favor of a state initiative to expand background checks."

CHICAGO, IL (PRWEB) January 28, 2014

Gateway Foundation Alcohol & Drug Treatment centers recently were surveyed by The Joint Commission, which renewed its accreditation for the next 3 years. Considered the gold standard in health care accreditation, The Joint Commission evaluation included 11 Gateway locations and 30 alcohol and drug treatment programs to verify the organization provides the highest standards in care for substance abuse and mental health issues.

To help ensure communities have access to safe, quality treatment and services, The Joint Commission is an independent, non-for-profit organization that accredits and certifies more than 20,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States. It analyzes hospitals and health care providers for compliance with more than 1,000 “individual elements of performance” applicable to a variety of functions, such as: safety and well-being of patients and staff, quality assurance, governance, environments of care and medication management.

“I consider this last evaluation our most successful since The Joint Commission awarded Gateway its first accreditation in 1992—and our extremely dedicated staff is a main reason why we are performing so well,” says Michael Darcy, President & CEO, Gateway Foundation Alcohol & Drug Treatment. “As an organization, we continuously improve the quality of our clinical programs and adopt the most effective evidenced-based clinical treatment protocols to help people overcome addiction. And, I believe The Joint Commission accreditation is a vital process that has helped Gateway become a leading substance abuse treatment provider in Illinois,” adds Darcy.

Surviving Long-Term Unemployment: One Mother's Story Filed under: Unemployment, Job Search, Economy, Food, Financial Education

*Martha Irvine/AP*Debbie Jurcak, left, a mother of three, checks out the bread at the West Suburban Community Pantry in Woodridge, Ill. Jurcak, 43, was among many Americans who lost unemployment benefits in late December.

By MARTHA IRVINE

AURORA, Ill. -- Down the road from an emergency food pantry where a small crowd waits for the chance to gather free groceries, there is a church sign that reads: "If you need help, ask God. If you don't, thank God."

Debbie Jurcak, one of those in line, will tell you that it is indeed divine help -- or, anyway, faith-based organizations -- that she and her family have relied on in recent weeks. Late last month, the federal government ended her unemployment benefits, six months after she was laid off from an administrative job.

Having passed that six-month mark, she had joined the ranks of the "long-term unemployed," a growing group of more than 1.3 Americans for whom Congress recently declined to extend benefits. It is a label that Jurcak, a former teacher with two master's degrees, never expected would apply to her.

"It's not something you want to go around talking about all the time. I think a lot of people don't share what the depth of their need is," the 43-year-old mother of three said, wiping tears from underneath her glasses as she waited for her turn at the West Suburban Community Pantry, outside Chicago.

"But there's no room for pride," she added, "because we all come to a point in our life -- whether it's financial reasons, or medical reasons, or mental health reasons, or whatever they are -- where you recognize your need for help."

Turns out, Jurcak is one of the lucky ones, or so she hopes.
After months applying for jobs, she learned just days after her visit to the pantry, that she got a customer service job, which she starts this week. It's only temporary for now and the pay is modest. But if she proves herself, there's a good chance she'll be hired permanently, she said.

Her husband Frank is working for a temp agency, driving a forklift or delivering documents for $12 an hour. He, too, is awaiting word on a full-time job, his in law enforcement.

Permanent employment would mean major changes for this family and for their children, who were on the verge of eviction after Jurcak's benefits expired last month.

But many other American parents are still struggling to find work.

A recent report from the Urban Institute found that, in an average month, there are still three times as many children living with parents who've been out of work more than six months as there were in 2007, before the recession hit. And Illinois is among the states with the highest percentage of children in that predicament -- with nearly 5 percent of them living with parents who are long-term unemployed, according to the report.

Unemployment benefits are certainly not a cure-all, said Julia Isaacs, a senior fellow at the Urban Institute, who co-authored the report. But they do help cushion the negative impact that unemployment, and resulting poverty, can have on outcomes such as school performance, she said.

*Doing Things Differently*

For the Jurcaks, it's easy now to look back and see how they would have done things differently.

But Debbie Jurcak says there was no way of knowing how bad things would get after she left a teaching job in 2009 to spend time at home with her newborn daughter, Ella, who's now 4.

In the years the followed, Frank's assignments as a commercial diver at nuclear facilities began to dwindle. Two years ago, with bills mounting, they sold their four-bedroom home in a short sale and moved their kids to a new school district.

Eventually, Frank was permanently laid off, leading him to the temporary jobs while he looked for permanent work.

Debbie, meanwhile, had gotten the administrative job in the fall of 2012, but was laid off last May when her company had to cut back. While receiving unemployment benefits, she said she constantly sought work, reasoning: "My full-time job is finding a job and taking care of my kids."

Through it all, she and Frank have tried to shield their children as best they can -- not always successfully.

Though Ella still went to preschool, she often told her parents she missed her daycare friends. Sometimes, she'd bring out her piggy bank and announce, "I have money!" The two older children, ages 13 and 16, have had an even greater sense of the growing desperation from their mom and from Frank, who is their stepdad.

"They definitely know we've been struggling," Debbie Jurcak said. She and Frank have tried to absorb as much of the negative impact as they can.

To maintain a semblance of normalcy even with money tight, for instance, they bought their kids Christmas gifts. But when the letter about unemployment benefits arrived just after the holiday, it was difficult to hide the panic.

Unable to cover January rent, the couple sought emergency aid from the Society of St. Vincent De Paul -- an organization that regularly collects clothing and household donations from residents at their apartment complex. Their church plans to help them with February's rent payment, bridging the gap from the loss of Jurcak's unemployment benefits to her first paycheck.

Even before those benefits were cut off, the couple had sold many of their household belongings at second-hand shops to help pay the bills.

Still, Jurcak's 16-year-old son Dakota, a sophomore in high school, doesn't want anyone's pity.

"I don't feel, like, sad," he said. "We're fortunate just to be where we are now. My heart goes out to all the people who don't have what we have."

*A Tight Fit*

Indeed, though their apartment is a tight fit for five people, they have a home -- no small thing in these days of extreme cold -- and food on the table. He and his siblings all have their own rooms. He sleeps in the den, using a curtain for a door. And the living room serves as a bedroom for his parents, who sleep on a pull-out sofa bed.

Debbie Jurcak has used the dining room table as her office, scouring job sites and making calls to set up interviews. She's also used her time to apply for state assistance, food stamps and state and federal medical insurance -- until they're more financially stable.

Both of her daughters have some health issues, and medical bills have been mounting, along with everything else.

Jurcak found this new job with the help of a member of the family's church, after sending out hundreds of applications, most of which received no response.

Often, she said, her education seemed to work against her.

"The impression that employers seem to have is, 'You're not going to stay,'" Jurcak said. Or she said they'd tell her, they were only looking for candidates who met the minimum requirements for the job.

"They'd say I'm over-qualified."

At the West Suburban Community Pantry, where Jurcak has gotten many of her groceries in recent months, workers say it's not unusual to see unemployed professionals, including the occasional out-of work CEO -- even as the economy improves. And always, there are families.

Volunteer Julie Benario recalls one young mom with three children who became overwhelmed each time she visited the pantry.

"She'd get in her car and cry because people were so nice to her," Benario said.

Jurcak understands. One day, hopefully soon, she said, she vows to "pay it forward" and be the one to do the giving.

She also hopes members of Congress will find a way to reinstate long-term benefits, at least until the economy is stronger. Democrats are proposing extending the benefits from six to 11 months. Republicans have questioned how to pay for that.

"I don't want to rely on my government -- and quite frankly, I'm not convinced that it's really government's role to do all that it is asked to do," Jurcak said. "But it shouldn't ignore the needs of the people either."

Her voice shook when she said "ignore."

"Maybe until you're in the situation, you don't really get it."

Good morning, America. Today is Tuesday, January 28, and you know what that means!

Spoiler alert: It means that tonight, President Barack Obama will be delivering the 2014 State of the Union address before a joint session of Congress, the Cabinet, the Supreme Court, and a few people who actually don’t have jobs, but are the most deserving of them among all those assembled.

Tonight’s big topic? Income inequality. Bummer stuff, really. Which means it’s as solid an excuse as any to get good and soused.

We want to serve as America’s gentle enabler, but we also want to “take on the big issues,” so we’ve prepared our annual State of the Union libation enhancement guide with an eye toward giving you the most substantive and informed scuppering available in the contiguous United States.

We’ve sat through way too many of these things, and we’ve read all of the advance rumors about what’s being discussed tonight, and so we hope we can offer some realistic predictions of what’s about to happen -- while accounting for the improbable and implausible, as well.

All in good fun, is how we see it, and lord knows, this never-revelatory occasion could use something of a boost in the enjoyment department. As always, however, we urge you to behave responsibly! Somebody has to! It’s going to have to be you, I’m afraid.
