GREECE Mission To Catch Aurora In The Act

Karen C. Fox - NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md.

On Jan. 24, 2014, Marilia Samara will be waiting for the perfect aurora. Samara and her science team will be at the Poker Flat Research Range in Poker Flat, Alaska, looking for classic curls in the aurora in the night sky – curls that look like cream swirling in a cup of coffee. When they spot the appropriate conditions, the team will launch a sounding rocket for a 10-minute flight right into the heart of the aurora.

Samara is the principal investigator for the NASA-funded Ground-to-Rocket Electron-Electrodynamics Correlative Experiment, or GREECE, mission, which seeks to understand what combination of events sets up these auroral curls as they're called, in the charged, heated gas – or plasma – where aurora form. This is a piece of information, which in turn, helps paint a picture of the sun-Earth connection and how energy and particles from the sun interact with Earth's own magnetic system, the magnetosphere.

"Our overarching goal is to study the transfer of energy from the sun to Earth," said Samara, a space scientist at the Southwest Research Institute, or SWRI, in San Antonio, Texas. "We target a particular manifestation of that connection: the aurora."

At their simplest, aurorae are caused when particles from the sun funnel over to Earth's night side, generate electric currents, and trigger a shower of particles that strike oxygen and nitrogen some 60 to 200 miles up in Earth's atmosphere, releasing a flash of light. But the details are always more complicated, of course. Researchers wish to understand the aurora, and movement of plasma in general, at much smaller scales including such things as how different structures are formed there.

To study the structures, GREECE consists of two parts: ground-based imagers to track the aurora from the ground and the rocket to take measurements from the middle of the aurora itself. The rocket will fly for 600 seconds, reaching its zenith over the native village of Venetie, Alaska. State-of-the-art imagers will be placed in Venetie to watch the development of the curls and help the team decide when to launch – sometime during a launch window of Jan. 24 to Feb 6. Instruments on the rocket will gather information on the particles and electric fields within the aurora, which can be compared to the images gathered from the ground.

"Auroral curls are visible from the ground with high-resolution imaging," said Samara. "And we can infer from those observations what's happening farther out. But to truly understand the physics we need to take measurements in the aurora itself."

Different combinations of information on the particles and fields observed in the aurora, would point to a different cause for these swirls in the sky. Auroral curls might, perhaps, be caused by what's called a Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, the same combination of low and high speed flows that lead to surfer waves near the beach. Or they could be caused by something called Alfven waves – a type of electromagnetic wave present only in plasmas. Or they could be caused by something else altogether.

Sounding rockets are a perfect tool for tackling the answer. For one thing, sounding rockets are one of the few space-faring vehicles capable of being sent directly through the heights at which auroras exist. Second, sounding rockets can provide a robust set of observations, even in a ten-minute trip, at relatively low-cost.

GREECE is a collaborative effort between SWRI, which developed particle instruments and the ground-based imaging, and the University of California, Berkeley, measuring the electric and magnetic fields. The launch is supported by a sounding rocket team from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility, Wallops Island, Va. The Poker Flat Research Range is operated by the University of Alaska, Fairbanks.

TCP Encourage You to Get a PhD in LED

Aurora, OH (PRWEB) January 23, 2014

With the government-mandated phase out of incandescent light bulbs making news, the energy efficient lighting experts at Technical Consumer Products, Inc. (TCP) want Americans to “Get a PhD in LED.”

The elimination of incandescent light bulbs has led many Americans to search for cost-effective, energy-efficient options. LED lighting tops that list! Yet, there’s confusion around the basic differences between incandescent and LED bulbs and what to look for in an LED product. Today, the LED lighting experts at TCP launched the “Get a PhD in LED” Facebook promotion to help take care of that education.

To participate, log on to TCP’s Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/TCPLighting and click on the “Free TCP LED Light Bulb” promotion. “LED students” will be presented basic facts about LED lighting options. TCP will send everyone who participates a free TCP LED light bulb to try at their home or business.

TCP plans to share more facts and information about LED lighting on the company’s Facebook timeline and Twitter feed so “students” can continue their education.

With its North America headquarters in Aurora, OH, TCP is a privately-held leader in energy efficient lighting innovations. NER Releases Ethernet Gateway for Aurora Monitoring System

New Gateway provides users with more flexibility for collecting sensor data

Glassboro, NJ (PRWEB) January 23, 2014

Today NER announced the addition of an Ethernet Gateway as part of the Aurora High Resolution Temperature Monitoring and Alerting System. The new gateway features updated levels of encryption and an integrated web server that allows for communication with the Aurora Wireless Sensor Monitoring and Notification System without the need for a PC.

This latest addition to the Aurora High Resolution Temperature Monitoring and Alerting System advances proactive environmental monitoring within data centers and other critical spaces. Users now have access to a gateway device with MODBUS TCP interfaces and four SNMP poll and trap interfaces for those that would like to use the Ethernet Gateway for local data collection.

“As our customers continue to find success with Aurora, NER continues to expand the capabilities, broaden support and offer the highest levels of customization for this innovative product line,” said Robert Huttemann, Vice President at NER. “What impresses customers the most is the invaluable data, trending and alerting benefits come in an unbelievably easy to deploy solution. The Ethernet gateway is no exception, simply plug this device into any open network port with internet connection and it automatically connects to the Aurora server.”

The Ethernet Gateway buffers up to 16,000 sensor data messages in on-board memory in the event of an internet connection interruption. When internet communication is re-established the sensor data will download to the Aurora system.

The Aurora High Resolution Temperature Sensing System revolutionizes how facilities view temperature. Central to the system is a strip that has eight sensors spaced vertically eight inches apart that collect temperature readings at eight different height levels. The readings are visually displayed on the strip through high resolution LEDs that range from cool (blue) to hot (red) and a blend of 129 colors in between. Data from these readings are sent to the Management System through a gateway for trending and alerting purposes.

Huttemann further adds, “Data Centers are dynamic environments with temperature being a critical aspect, so Aurora’s instantaneous and accurate representation is invaluable when monitoring changes or validating best-practice improvements. Whether you are looking down the aisle, viewing the user interface, receiving automated alerts, or collecting trending data, with Aurora potential issues in critical spaces will not go unnoticed.”

NER manufactures Aurora in the US and is currently accepting orders for immediate delivery. For more information about NER’s products and services, visit http://www.nerdata.com.

FDA says it is studying caramel coloring in soda

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Food and Drug Administration says it is conducting new studies of the safety of caramel coloring in soft drinks and other foods, even though previous research has shown no identifiable health risk. The agency's announcement comes in response to a study by Consumer Reports that shows varying levels of 4-methylimidazole — an impurity formed in some caramel coloring at low levels during the manufacturing process — in 12 brands of soda from five manufacturers. The FDA says it has already studied the use of caramel as a flavor and color additive for decades and it has no reason to believe the coloring used is unsafe. The agency said it is also reviewing new data on the safety of 4-methylimidazole but did not say what that data is."These efforts will inform the FDA's safety analysis and will help the agency determine what, if any, regulatory action needs to be taken," said FDA spokeswoman Juli Putnam. There are no federal limits on the amount of 4-methylimidazole, which the FDA says can also form in trace amounts when coffee beans are roasted or some meats are grilled. The Consumer Reports study urged the agency to set a maximum level of the substance when it is artificially added to foods or soda, to require labeling when it is added and to bar products from carrying the "natural" label if they contain caramel colors."There is no reason why consumers need to be exposed to this avoidable and unnecessary risk that can stem from coloring food and beverages brown," said Consumer Reports' Dr. Urvashi Rangan, a toxicologist and lead investigator on the study.Though studies have not been conclusive about whether 4-methylimidazole is a carcinogen, California includes it on the state list of carcinogens and a state law mandates a cancer warning label on products that have a certain level of the substance. In reaction to that law, Coke, Pepsi and other soft drink makers have directed their caramel-color suppliers to reduce the levels of 4-methylimidazole. It is not found in all caramel colorings.Over an eight-month period, the study found that single servings of two products purchased in California, Pepsi One and the beverage Malta Goya, exceeded the 29 micrograms of 4-methylimidazole that are the threshold in California but carried no warning. Consumer Reports has asked the California attorney general's office to investigate; a spokesman for the attorney general says the office is reviewing the request.PepsiCo spokeswoman Aurora Gonzalez said the company is "extremely concerned" about the study and believes it is factually incorrect.Gonzalez said the average amount of soda consumed daily by those who drink it is less than a 12-ounce can, so the samples actually do not exceed the limit of 29 micrograms a day."All of Pepsi's products are below the threshold set in California and all are in full compliance with the law," she said. The drinks tested were Sprite, Diet Coke, Coca-Cola, Coke Zero, Dr Pepper, Dr. Snap, Brisk Iced Tea, A&W Root Beer, Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Pepsi One and Goya Malta. Consumer Reports said there was no significant level found in Sprite, and consistently low levels were found in Coke products.___Associated Press writer Candice Choi in New York contributed to this report.___Follow Mary Clare Jalonick on Twitter: http://twitter.com/mcjalonick
