Children can poke, probe, and examine the skeletal, muscular, nervous, circulatory, respiratory, and digestive systems. Each app contains a recording tool so kids can ask questions, listen, and respond to each other.

Judges said, “Humor meets science in this poster-child example of how to make invisible, abstract biological science have meaning to a curious child. You help the lungs expand, make digestion happen, and experience the nervous system, giggling all the way.”

Best Tech Leverage Toy

Furby Boom by Hasbro

The all new Furby Boom has a mind of its own and combines physical and digital ways to play. Interact with your Furby Boom 1-on-1 to shape its personality. Only with Furby Boom can one hatch and raise digital Furby Furblings.

Judges said: “Furby Boom has made the transition to the digital age. By integrating and leveraging the affordances of each platform (toy and tablet), it's created a top notch personal play experience. Sure, it can still drive a sane adults crazy, but kids will make Furby speak, dance, sleep and repeat for a long time.”

Best Video Game Software

Judges said, “Everyone wondered if Disney could pull it off when they decided to enter a market dominated by powerful forces like Spyro and Minecraft. Disney Infinity is proof that children can be given the keys to the magical kingdom. By combining high quality collectibles and a portal to a virtual sandbox, kids are free to invent their own worlds based on their favorite Disney characters.”

Touch Press continues to raise the bar, bringing magic to the fingertips of kids of all ages.”

Judges said, “David Kleeman has spent a lifetime championing quality for children's media. For 25 years he's explored, judged and put the spotlight on 'only the best' for children. He's constantly rethinking what a quality screen-based experience should be. He does this in many ways including cinema in contests like the Prix Jeunesse. As a senior fellow of the Fred Rogers Center for Early Learning and Children’s Media, at the American Center For Children’s Media, and now at PlayCollective, David has brought thought provoking conversation to developers, educators and researchers in kids’ media. His voice is heard worldwide as a moral compass and passionate evangelist for children’s publishing.”

Disney Magic Mirror App and Princess DreamCastle

The castle features rooms for Ariel, Cinderella, Rapunzel, Aurora and Snow White. Children scan special spots around the castle with any iOS device to unlock activities in the app. Sewing with Cinderella and baking with Snow White are fun, if a bit limited in scope, activities.”

Tiggly

Judges said, “Simple physical shapes and a number of todder friendly games combine to offer multi-modal play for the youngest kids.”

OverColor

Judges said, “OverColor is a clever spatial game with an incredible sense of minimalist interface design and strong player engagement. There is no text and no instructions whatsoever. The user experience is extremely clean and straightforward, audio soundscaping and audio responses are light, but greatly add to the experience, allowing a user to focus on the task at hand and not getting in the way of the play.”

Pines to Vine

Judges said, “Pines to Vine shows traditional publishers how best to create great engaging educational content. This versatile and highly scaffolded eBook offers a customized experience for a wide array of learners. Screen text can be modified based on a user's reading ability, and science concepts that are presented through a variety of interactive examples which make abstract concepts interactive, accessible, concrete, and memorable.”

Celestron Wifi Telescope and Microsope

Judges said, “Celestron is the first to add WiFi to telescopes and microscopes and create free apps that let you explore and record what you see. Celestron’s reputation for excellence and digital innovation makes this a great bet for introducing kids to the worlds through the eye of a microscope or telescope.”

PezoPals

Judges said, “This interactive bear/MP3 player was invented by an 11 year old boy. Kudos on his early start as an inventor. A cuddly bear replete with controls cradles an MP3 player that’s preloaded with 24 hours of children’s classic stories, music and games. You can also record your own voice.”

Strong Knowledge of GIS Opens Doors for Job Applicants

Learn why professionals are turning to online geographic information systems (GIS) programs to acquire the most sought after skills to help differentiate themselves from the masses to become a competitive force in this tight job market. Learn more about American Sentinel University’s online GIS programs at http://www.americansentinel.edu/information-technology/b-s-geographic-information-systems.

Aurora, CO (PRWEB) January 14, 2014

Professionals are finding that the job market demands even greater levels of education and expert knowledge. Many are turning to geographic information systems (GIS) programs to acquire the most sought after skills to compete in this tight job market.

“There is a spatial component to just about every discipline or career field and regardless of your interests, GIS can be applied in some way to draw new insights to a particular industry,” says Stephen McElroy, GIS program chair at American Sentinel University. “GIS is being used throughout society more widely than ever before and offers exciting opportunities for highly educated professionals to discover and explore the niche that GIS fills in their organizations.”

Experts say that many of the 4 million jobs currently open in the United States are vacant because there is a shortage of skills and a need for more highly educated workers and currently GIS skills are sorely lacking in today’s job market, according to the Boston Globe.

Most Sought After Skills
Dr. McElroy says that technical proficiency and domain expertise are critical, but soft skills such as communications, critical thinking, problem-solving and teamwork abilities are the types of skills that help meld the software experience when combined with industry-specific knowledge to produce a well-rounded job candidate in both the private and public sectors.

“A GIS skill set can help a job applicant to differentiate themselves from the larger pool of applicants. Those professionals that are able to highlight their skills and experience in these areas will shine,” says Dr. McElroy.

He adds that having a strong knowledge of GIS can open doors for job candidates because of the increased focus on enterprise systems, big data, analytics and their use throughout an organization.

“The ability to apply geospatial thinking to a wide range of business processes and workplace activities has made the GIS professional a highly-valued employee,” says Dr. McElroy. “And it could be the key to opening doors to new opportunities which GIS tools can be applied in creative industries that have not employed geospatial strategies in the past.”

Data analysis and visualization skills have become important in a number of industries because professionals with an understanding of spatial analysis and visualization can apply mapping technologies to bring that data to life. Maps offer a very simple and intuitive way to visualize patterns and trends that are almost always hidden in alphanumeric databases.

“Visual learning is a key way humans process information, so well-constructed maps provide an ideal vehicle to synthesize complex business data,” adds Dr. McElroy.

Path to Success
Dr. McElroy points out that lifelong learning is a hallmark of an active and productive professional so career advancement and success depends on regular and sustained efforts to remain current in the field of geospatial technologies while enhancing in-demand skills through a wide variety of professional development activities.

Increasingly, an advanced degree in GIS or graduate certificate may be required for career advancement or a job promotion. For example, a GIS technician looking for a promotion to a GIS analyst may need a master’s degree to meet the education requirements for a higher-level job classification.

While having a bachelor’s degree might meet the minimum requirement for consideration, Dr. McElroy says having a master’s degree demonstrates two additional years of education and enhanced marketable skills.

“Advancing your GIS degree with an online master’s degree or certificate will help differentiate a candidate from the masses,” he adds. “The marketplace is changing, so should your strategic plan. It’s important to build your credentials, professional background and continue your education in a flexible online environment to be a competitive force in the job market.”

EdisonHealth Announces Its First Medical Destinations of Excellence

The EdisonHealth Network LLC has announced its first Medical Destinations of Excellence for spine, heart, valve and transplant surgery. Formed earlier this year, EdisonHealth helps large employers gain access to carefully chosen integrated health systems that specialize in providing high quality and appropriate care to individuals faced with these complex procedures.

Cleveland, Ohio (PRWEB) January 14, 2014

Rather than limit its network to high-cost, high-volume academic medical centers, EdisonHealth contracts with leading health systems committed to offering multidisciplinary, team-based approaches in the evaluation and treatment of patients. “The emphasis of our clinical partners is appropriateness,” states Tom Emerick, company co-founder and former vice president of benefits for Walmart. “Let’s make sure the diagnosis is correct, and the treatment is appropriate. Then, when surgery is really needed, these are some of the best places in the world to receive it.”

Members of participating health plans now have preferred access to EdisonHealth’s first five Medical Destinations of Excellence, which include Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA; Intermountain Healthcare in Salt Lake City, UT; Mercy Hospital Springfield in Springfield, MO; Oklahoma Heart Hospital in Oklahoma City, OK; and Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, WA. Specific procedures for cardiac surgery will be offered by Geisinger, Oklahoma Heart and Virginia Mason. Spine procedures will be performed by Geisinger, Mercy and Virginia Mason. Transplants will be provided by Intermountain. Additional health systems are still in the due diligence and contracting phases.

“This is a great opportunity for employer-sponsored health plans to help their employees get world-class advice and treatment for complex conditions,” according to Rick Chelko, president of EdisonHealth and The Chelko Consulting Group. “Employers are starting to recognize that they can’t rely on just any provider to properly diagnose and treat these conditions. Often times inappropriate and unnecessary care is harming patients and adding costs, the importance of partnering with proven integrated health systems is more important than ever.”

EdisonHealth extends the exclusive benefits of these hospital agreements to contracted employers and health plans along with a suite of care coordination, claims payment, performance reporting and related services. Plan members of contracting health plans will gain access to heart, valve, spine and transplant consultations and care, which are usually covered at 100 percent without deductible or coinsurance, plus travel, lodging and food for the patient and a caregiver.

The company will also collaborate with members of its provider network to foster continuous improvements in diagnosing and treating complex surgical cases. “Documented variations in treatment, even among high-reputation teaching hospitals, are amazing. Variations in care and outcomes are even more dramatic in rural and regional settings,” says Emerick who was recently recognized by Forbes as one of “13 to Watch in 2013: The Unsung Heroes Changing Health Care Forever.”

According to Chelko, now that the initial provider network is in place, EdisonHealth can move forward on finalizing agreements with a growing list of interested plans and helping members take advantage of the benefit by mid-year. “At a time when most healthcare news is quite somber, we’re pleased to offer a positive solution.”

To learn more about The EdisonHealth Network LLC, contact Rick Chelko at 866-982-7988 or visit http://www.edisonhealth.net.

Magna International Inc. (TSE:MG), North America’s largest auto-parts supplier, advanced to a fresh high even as the company forecast 2014 sales below analysts' expectations.

Magna touched a record high of C$93.91 before trading at C$93.00, up 0.9 percent, at 1:55 p.m. in Toronto.

Revenue in 2014 will amount to $33.8 billion to $35.5 billion, the Aurora, Ontario-based manufacturer said in a statement today. That trailed analysts' expectation of $36.1 billion, according to Bloomberg.

Industrywide production will total 16.7 million light vehicles in North America and 19.1 million in Europe, it said.

Magna said it plans to spend about $1.4 billion on plants and equipment this year, matching the budget for 2013, as it works to improve profitability in Europe.

“Our outlook reflects our commitment to improving operating results in Europe, including through ongoing restructuring, implementing operational improvements and exercising discipline in quoting new business,” Chief Executive Officer Don Walker said in the statement.

Magna also predicted “continued progress in expanding our business in high-growth regions, particularly in Asia.”

Magna, which has 316 plants in 29 countries, said total production sales, which are targeted at $28.6 billion to $29.9 billion this year, will probably increase by $3.6 billion by 2016. North America will represent 45 percent of the growth and Europe for 25 percent.
