Home Care Assistance - Toronto/York Region (HomeCareAssistance-Toronto.com), the leading provider of non-medical, in-home senior care in the Greater Toronto Area, is weighing in on a recent report showing that Ontario’s health system is failing the elderly and announcing how it can provide care to patients post-hospitalization.
According to a recent study, for nearly two decades, Ontario’s provincial government has downsized hospitals, cutting 19,000 beds and reducing access to in-hospital restorative care and rehabilitation therapies. The study also notes that Ontario has roughly four fewer healthcare workers per 1,000 residents, or 47,000 total fewer healthcare workers, than the rest of Canada. After Twenty Years of Budget Cuts, Ontario’s Health System is Failing Patients,” Ontario Council of Hospital Unions web site, February 27, 2014; http://www.ochu.on.ca/resources/Events/HOTLINE_REPORT_2014.pdf.)
“Not only are Ontarians not getting the healthcare support they need in the hospital, they are also not getting it at home under the outpatient community-based care model,” says Lester Fix, executive vice president of Home Care Assistance - Toronto/York Region. “The study alleges that those most affected by the cuts are the elderly, who are often discharged prematurely out of hospitals when still acutely ill or in need of in-hospital restorative care and therapies.”
Most recently, from 2004 and 2009, per-capital funding for home-care declined by 14%; this has resulted in one in six patients being readmitted to hospital within 30 days of being discharged. Overall, more than 10,000 Ontarians today are on a waiting list for some type of at-home health support and another 25,000 are waiting for a nursing home bed. (Source: Ibid.)
Fix explains that provincial governments across Canada are always looking for ways to cut spending, and in the current economic environment, it doesn’t appear as though hospitals or at-home health support is in line for huge budgetary increases.
“At Home Care Assistance - Toronto/York Region, we are committed to the well-being and safety of the clients we are privileged to serve,” he adds. “Many of our clients come to us following a hospitalization, having been referred by physicians, discharge planners, social workers, and case managers. We understand that the transition from hospital to home can be a challenging one for patients and their families.”
One of the leading causes of hospital readmission or slow post-hospitalization recovery, Fix observes, is the lack of proper support immediately following a hospital discharge. As the leading experts in post-hospitalization care, Home Care Assistance - Toronto/York Region can make the transition from hospital to at-home recovery as seamless as possible.
Fix notes that working with a personal Home Care Assistance - Toronto/York Region caregiver provides the individual customized attention, ranging from a few hours a day to around-the-clock care. Visiting therapists can also cater to the specific recovery needs of a client at home, providing customization not available at all rehabilitation facilities. For most seniors transitioning out of the hospital setting, home care is the solution that offers the greatest security and happiness for the client and the most peace of mind to his or her family.
“Those interested in transitioning to a homecare setting should consider speaking with a Home Care Assistance - Toronto/York Region care manager about the Transition Home™ package and a personalized care plan for their specific situation,” Fix concludes.
