Saturday evening stargazers were treated to one of the trippiest natural phenomenons Earth has to offer: a naked eye-visible aurora borealis.

The "northern lights," as they are often called, originate with our sun. Solar storms that occur there emit streams of charged particles which help to trigger the unusual light show once they reach Earth.

The magnetic fields emanating from our north and south poles pull the charged particles down into our upper (and sometimes lower) atmosphere, where some of them collide with the neutral particles that reside there. Read more...

Powerful Geomagnetic Storms Hit Earth - Will Stocks Fall Next Week?

Via StockBoardAsset.com,

*Overnight and continuing into this morning a large space weather event has signaled a G-3 ‘Strong’ geomagnetic storm. *On April 22, 2017, I wrote an article titled: Yesterday’s Broad Power Outage Likely Caused By Geomagnetic Storm  outlining how the grid failures in San Fransisco, New York, and Los Angeles were likely due to a strong geomagnetic storm. As we know, geomagnetic storms *can* *influence the functioning and reliability of spaceborne and ground-based systems and services or endanger property or human health. *

The Planetary K-Index is used to measure geomagnetic storms at Boulder, Fredericksburg, Est. Planetary, and College. The graphs below indicate a strong geomagnetic storm is currently underway and in some locations literally off the chart.

via watchers.news

*A coronal mass ejection (CME) produced during the early UTC hours of May 23, 2017 hit Earth’s magnetic field at 15:36 UTC on May 27, more than 24 hours after it was expected. Although the solar wind speed is relatively slow, the embedded magnetic field had a prolonged period of southward Bz that managed to spark G3 – Strong geomagnetic storm.*

G3 – Strong geomagnetic storm (K-index of 7) threshold was reached at 04:19 UTC. Under G3 conditions, the area of impact is primarily poleward of 50 degrees Geomagnetic Latitude. Power system voltage irregularities are possible and false alarms may be triggered on some protection devices. Spacecraft systems may experience surface charging and increased drag on low Earth-orbit satellites and orientation problems may occur. Intermittent satellite navigation (GPS) problems, including loss-of-lock and increased range error may occur. HF (high frequency) radio may be intermittent, aurora may be seen as low as Pennsylvania to Iowa to Oregon.

Conclusion: According to Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta:

"Specifically, *people affected by geomagnetic storms may be more inclined to sell stocks on stormy days because they incorrectly attribute their bad mood to negative economic prospects *rather than bad environmental conditions."

*Could this weekend’s geomagnetic storm lead to stock market losses next week? *

Tesla’s former Autopilot head is launching a self-driving-car company — and it could have a big advantage

Tesla’s former Autopilot head is launching a self-driving-car company — and it could have a big advantage It's not particularly shocking to see a new startup pop up at this point in the lucrative race to develop self-driving-car tech.

But it is noteworthy to see one that boasts the star engineers behind Google's and Tesla's respective projects as its leaders.

Aurora Innovation is a new startup led by Chris Urmson, the former head of Google's autonomous car team, and Sterling Anderson, the former director of Tesla Autopilot. Drew Bagnell, Uber's former autonomy and perception lead, has also joined Aurora as CTO.

Aurora plans to develop the hardware, software, and data services necessary to build an autonomous driving platform — a similar approach to Uber and Waymo, the self-driving venture spun out of Google's parent company.

The startup doesn't plan to take on the tech giants when it comes to complex hardware like lidar, a key sensor that helps vehicles detect objects, which has become the focal point of a lawsuit between Uber and Waymo.

But it does plan to work directly with Tier 1 suppliers to design the best sensors to feed their algorithms that will create the car brain. Aurora is still in early stages, however, and is currently hiring and collecting data with an Audi Q7.

At first glance, Aurora seems to be taking the same tactic as most self-driving startups in Silicon Valley.

Automakers have spent millions on relatively unknown ventures as part of an effort to bulk up on artificial intelligence experts. The practice gives engineers the cash cushion to pursue their ideas while carmakers secure the talent necessary to compete with Tesla and Waymo on software.

But Anderson told Business Insider that Aurora is not another Cruise Automation, a driverless car startup snatched by GM for $581 million.

"We’re not for sale," Anderson said. "We intend to enable the entire industry and we wouldn't be able to do that if we were owned by a single OEM."

Aurora plans to work directly with automakers through non-exclusive partnerships, Anderson said.

Aurora was officially formed in January and was operating in stealth mode until a Tesla lawsuit broke news of the venture's existence. The lawsuit, which alleged Anderson had poached Tesla employees to work at Aurora, was settled in April.

The startup has $6.5 million so far to work with through self-funding and a small financing round. The company plans to launch a Series A at some point this year.

The self-driving-car space is getting crowded as more startups, like AutoX, jump into the ring to build a solution for automakers that desperately need the software talent.

"I think right now the industry is kind of prickly. I think there's a lot of anxiety right now," Anderson said.

Although some loose alliances have been formed, like Fiat Chrysler's work with Waymo, several automakers are still looking to align with Silicon Valley to ramp up their internal autonomous driving efforts. Ford expressed such an interest when it named Jim Hackett, the executive that had been overseeing its self-driving-car efforts, as CEO of the entire company.

"Those who build cars will continue to build cars for a long time. I don't see that changing," Anderson said. "At the same time, expertise in software development and self-driving [is] one place where folks like our team are uniquely qualified."

Much more than “just loose joints!”

‘Hypermobility is the term used to describe the ability to move joints beyond the normal range of movement. Joint hypermobility is common in the general population. It may be present in just a few joints or it may be widespread. It is most common in childhood and adolescence, in females, and Asian and Afro-Caribbean races. It tends to lessen with age. In many people joint hypermobility is of no medical consequence and commonly does not give rise to symptoms. Hypermobility can even be considered an advantage, for example athletes, gymnasts, dancers and musicians might specifically be selected because of their extra range of movement.

For a small percentage of the population, instead of being advantageous, hypermobility may be associated with joint and ligament injuries, pain, fatigue and other symptoms. Hypermobility can also be a sign of a more serious underlying condition, which are often passed down through the generations.’ (1/ Hakim A.J.).

‘Experts estimate that up to 10% of the general population may have some degree of hypermobility, with women affected about three times more often than men. Most hypermobile people do not develop any problems from their loose joints, but some suffer chronic pain and other symptoms.’ (2/ Pocinki A.) The exact cause(s) of joint hypermobility is unknown; however, “loose joints” may be caused by various mutations to one or more of the components that help build our connective tissues. Research is suggesting that both genetic and epigenetic factors could play a role in the presentation signs and symptoms, as well as the severity of issues that are experienced by some with joint hypermobility.

When hypermobility becomes symptomatic, it can be an indication of a syndrome, such as hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS). hEDS is one of the Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) - a group of thirteen heritable connective tissue disorders caused by mutations to either the structure or function of collagen – the most abundant protein in the body – or other components of the extracellular matrix. In others, symptomatic hypermobility can be a sign of another syndrome such as:· Marfan syndrome
· Osteogenesis imperfecta
· Loeys-Dietz Syndrome
· An autoimmune disorder affecting the connective tissue (i.e. Lupus or Rheumatoid Arthritis)

While research is still searching to understand the complexities of hypermobility syndromes, they can cause a broad spectrum of multisystemic dysfunction. The first sign or symptom of hEDS is usually joint hypermobility, and many people do not experience issues with their loose joints until later in life, for example during puberty, if at all. On the other hand, some individuals with hEDS have multisystemic problems from birth. When an individual with symptomatic joint hypermobility does not meet the criteria for hEDS, they may be classified as having a ‘hypermobility spectrum disorder’ (HSD).

“Common features among the types include joint hypermobility, skin fragility, chronic pain, and fatigue. More severe types, such as Vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, can be life-threatening, as fragile blood vessels and internal organs can spontaneously rupture.” -- The Ehlers-Danlos Society

People with HSDs or hEDS can have a broad range of symptoms in addition to hypermobile joints such as the knees, shoulders, neck, ankles, fingers, wrists, the pelvis, the jaw, and more. Because components of connective tissue can be found everywhere in our bodies, not only supporting our joints, it is possible that every system in the body can be affected. Confusion and misdiagnosis have only increased, because no two people with hypermobility present the same – hEDS is especially subjective. The updated diagnostic criteria for EDS and HSD, awareness, education, and early intervention are critical. Over-medicalization, or lack of proactive approaches to living well with joint hypermobility, can cause damage to the connective tissues, progress multisystemic dysfunction, and cause life-long and additional trauma, pain and suffering.

Velodome Shelters, a New Jersey manufacturer of bicycle parking products, was chosen by On Bike Share, to supply its Newport bicycle shelters for the River Cities Bike Share Program, in Indiana. On Bike Share is a provider of bike share systems.

Clifton, NJ (PRWEB) June 01, 2017

On Bike Share, a Pawtucket, RI provider of bike share systems assisted the cities of Aurora and Lawrenceburg, IN in implementing the River Cities Bike Share Program. A scenic, six-mile bike path hugs the Ohio River and connects the two cities. The program was developed to encourage residents and tourists to use the path and to explore the downtown areas of both cities.

For the share program, bikes are distributed among three locations: downtown Aurora, Dearborn Trail and downtown Lawrenceburg. To designate discrete bike parking areas for the locations, On Bike Share selected Velodome Shelters, a New Jersey manufacturer of high quality bicycle parking products, to supply bicycle shelters. Velodome’s Newport bike shelter fit the bill. The Newport’s handsome design blends seamlessly into the varied locales while keeping the aesthetic consistent. Constructed of anodized aluminum, the Newport bike shelter holds up in extreme weather conditions and doesn’t rust. Its polycarbonate roof allows light to pass through and protects the bikes from the elements.

Newport bike shelters stand well above eye level so riders can quickly identify the bike parking areas. On Bike Share’s free mobile app allows a user to locate an available bike, unlock it via Bluetooth and once parked, log it as returned. The system tracks all bike and rider activity which can be viewed in real time with the Admin software. Patrick Perugini, president of On Bike Share, notes that Aurora and Lawrenceburg have seen use of the system steadily climbing– even to 70% some weekends.

On May 6, in Aurora, residents gathered in front of a recently installed Newport bike shelter as the cities celebrated the launch of River Cities Bike Share Program with a ribbon cutting ceremony.
