An active shooting on the campus of Ohio State University played out in real time on social media Monday morning, as students, the school, media members and witnesses used technology to get their message to the appropriate people.

Ohio State officials warned students in a series of tweets about the situation, with one tweet saying, “Buckeye Alert: Active Shooter on campus. Run Hide Fight. Watts Hall. 19th and College.”

The Associated Press eventually informed students that the scene is secure on Twitter:

An attack on the campus of Ohio State University played out in real time on social media Monday morning while confusion and chaos made it hard to determine what was actually going on.

Here is what we know so far:

*This wasn’t a shooting*

The attack was initially called a “shooting,” but reports indicate the suspect did not shoot anyone. He is now believed to have initially struck people with a car before stabbing victims with a butcher knife.

Confusion over details started when Ohio State officials warned students in a series of tweets about the situation, one of which said, “Buckeye Alert: Active Shooter on campus. Run Hide Fight. Watts Hall. 19th and College.”

*Also Read:* Ohio State Campus Attack Plays Out on Social Media in Real Time (Video)

*The suspect has been partially ID’d*

The attacker is being reported as a Somali refugee by some news organizations, including NBC News. He is believed to be an 18-to-20-year-old legal permanent resident of the U.S. who lived near campus.

*At least eight people have been injured*

Reports on casualties differ based on the outlet doing the reporting, but the Associated Press reports that eight people have been hospitalized, one critically. The number of victims has been reported as high as 10.

*The suspect has been killed*

SWAT teams descended on the campus once initial alerts were sent, and the suspect died from a gunshot wound, according to The New York Times.

*Terrorism is being considered*

According to CBS News, Ohio officials are entertaining the possibility that this was an act of terrorism. The FBI and ATF have been dispatched to help investigate.

Amazon's cloud boss Andy Jassy just slammed Larry Ellison and mocked his 'hand-waving and bombast' (AMZN, ORCL)

$

Amazon's cloud boss Andy Jassy just slammed Larry Ellison and mocked his 'hand-waving and bombast' (AMZN, ORCL) Oracle founder Larry Ellison has a decades-long history of publicly slamming his competitors and lately he's trained his sights on one of the most fierce competitors he's ever had: Amazon Web Services.

In September, during the keynote speech at Oracle's huge customer conference in San Francisco, Ellison spent a good deal of time trash talking Amazon, mostly by saying how much slower it was to run databases on Amazon's cloud than it was to run them on Oracle's cloud.

Ellison provided the results of benchmark tests to back up his claims.

On Wednesday, Amazon hit back.

Andy Jassy, the CEO of Amazon Web Services, took the stage at his company's huge customer conference in Las Vegas and mocked Ellison's famous showmanship. Jassy told the crowd of IT professionals that Amazon's cloud services could give them superpowers such as X-ray vision to help them avoid being swayed by Ellison's claims.

"X-Ray vision is the unique ability to have visibility and vision," Jassy said such as "the ability to see through the hand-waving and bombast."

And during that time, for just a quick second, he flashed a picture of Larry Ellison, hands up on screen. The audience didn't miss it and laughed. Jassy explained:

"In the old days, because it was so expensive to test and experiment for any period of time, you used to be able to get these old guard leaders who would stand up and make all these wild claims and manipulate benchmarks for their own purposes, or take out full-page ads or billboards claiming whatever they claim. And you had no ability to know what was real. You had to make a buying decision before you could figure it out.

In the cloud, that's not the case. That ship has sailed, kind of like an America's Cup ship. The reality is that any of these technology infrastructure buyers will allow you to benchmark these services, test these services for any period of time, so you get to make an educated decision on what the best platform is for you."

Jassy later doubled down on his attack by saying, that Amazon's home grown database Aurora, is the "fastest growing service history of AWS." And then he had a customer, Finra, on stage that talked about how it migrated its massive databases from Oracle to AWS.

AWS says 14,000+ databases have been migrated from other vendors to Amazon’s cloud.

Jassy has shouted down Ellison's claims about AWS before. Back in October, Jassy called Ellison's speech a classic "old guard technology tactic," in which a latecomer with less functionalities and a fewer number of customers tries to establish itself by "manipulating" benchmarks. "As far as I can tell, that was made up," Jassy added, referring to the stats Ellison gave during his keynote last month.

*The battle between these two is very heated*

Oracle's bread-and-butter product is its super popular database. Amazon's cloud offers a large number of databases where companies pay only based on how much they use them. Its databases are among its fastest-growing cloud products. Last year, it even introduced a product that helps companies easily move their data from an Oracle (or other) database, into an Amazon one.

And AWS is on track to do $13 billion in revenue for its cloud this year, Jassy said. An increasing number of companies are opting to move all of their apps and data to the Amazon's cloud, too, and as they do, are reassessing whether to use Amazon's databases for some of their apps, rather than Oracle's, they say.

Jassy's smackdown of Larry Ellison was not lost on the crowd, either.

Coloradans Celebrate Organ, Eye and Tissue Donation in National and Local Events This Holiday Season

Transplant recipients, families of donors raise awareness for donation in the Rose Parade, 9News Parade of Lights

Denver, CO (PRWEB) December 01, 2016

This holiday season, Coloradans touched by organ, eye and tissue donation will be raising awareness for the cause and trying to inspire others to register at two holiday events. Kate Geer—the wife of a Colorado Sheriff Deputy that became a donor after his death in the line of duty earlier this year—will be sharing her story and representing Colorado aboard the Donate Life Float in the nationally televised Rose Parade. Additionally, numerous Coloradans that have either had a family member become a donor, or who have received a transplant themselves, will be escorting a “Gift of Life” balloon in Denver’s 9News Parade of Lights.

“We cannot put into words how thankful we are to work with the incredible advocates that share their stories in order to help us educate on the importance of donation and transplantation,” said Sue Dunn, president and CEO of Donor Alliance, the federally designated not-for-profit organization that facilitates organ and tissue donation in Colorado and will sponsor Kate’s participation in the Rose Parade and the Donate Life Colorado balloon in Denver’s Parade of Lights. “We are hopeful that the powerful impact donation and transplantation has had on our advocates’ lives will inspire Coloradans and people around the country to give the gift of life by joining their state donor registries.”

“Teammates in Life” Donate Life Float at the 128th Rose Parade

Kate will travel from Grand Junction, Colo. to ride on the fourteenth annual Donate Life Rose Parade Float on Monday January 2 in honor of her husband Derek Geer, a Mesa County Sherriff’s Deputy who was killed in the line of duty in early 2016. Derek saved four lives through organ donation after his death. The float has become the world’s most visible campaign to inspire donation. Kate will be joined on the float by 23 other individuals from around the country whose lives were impacted by donation and transplantation.

Since her husband’s passing, Kate has been an active advocate for donation. Leading up to her appearance in the Rose Parade, Kate will be participating in a Donate Life flag raising and pinning ceremony on December 6 at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Grand Junction, Colo. In addition to a Donate Life flag being raised at the hospital in honor of Derek, as a symbol of thanks, Kate will be pinning Donate Life pins onto members of the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office that worked alongside her husband.

The 128th Rose Parade will start at 8 a.m. PST on January 2, 2017 and be broadcast live in the U.S. by broadcast partners ABC, NBC, HGTV, Hallmark Channel, Univision and more. Check local broadcast listings for more information. For more information about the 2017 Teammates in Life Donate Life Rose Parade Float, visit http://www.donatelifefloat.org.

Donate Life Colorado “Gift of Life” Balloon at the 42nd Denver Parade of Lights

Before the Rose Parade, donation and transplantation will also be celebrated locally in Denver in the 9News Parade of Lights. On December 2 and 3, this annual holiday tradition will feature the Donate Life Colorado “Gift of Life” balloon, which is a jumbo balloon in the shape of a gift box, honoring those who have donated and representing the hope made possible by donation. Families of donors and transplant recipients from throughout Colorado will lead the float.
Among those marching in this year’s parade are the following Coloradans, with inspiring stories of being touched by donation and transplantation:·     Eamon Lujan, heart recipient, Littleton, CO: Born with an underdeveloped heart, Eamon was immediately placed on the transplant list at birth. After a three-month wait, Eamon received a life-saving transplant. At 10 years old, Eamon now makes frequent visits to other kids waiting on heart transplants in hopes of encouraging and inspiring them.
·     Jaclyn Prybella, partner of a donor, Greeley, CO: Jaclyn’s fiancé, Tyler, passed away after suffering a severe head injury in an accident at work. By becoming a donor, Tyler was able to save multiple lives; his family feels reassured knowing that he lives on through his recipients.
·     Doug French, liver recipient, Denver, CO: After living with Hepatitis C for decades, Doug’s illness eventually left him in need of a liver transplant. Doug received a live-saving transplant in 2015, and considers it to be his greatest gift.
·     Jaime Tellez, cornea recipient, Aurora, CO: After having surgeries on both of his eyes to treat aggressive cataracts, Jaime suffered cornea damage on his right eye that left him in need of a cornea transplant. Jaime’s successful partial cornea transplant took him from near blindness to being able to return to all of the activities he was restricted from for two years.
·     Kelsi Mathews, tissue recipient, Denver, CO: Kelsi was 23 when she was diagnosed with adult idiopathic scoliosis and told she’d eventually lose the ability to walk. Thanks to a transplant of cancellous bone grafts from a tissue donor, Kelsi is now able to lead a normal and fulfilling life.
·     Kyli Bailey, sister of a transplant recipient, Aurora, CO: Kyli has been touched by donation multiple times throughout her life; her grandmother received a kidney transplant and her sister received both bone marrow and double lung transplants. Kyli proudly supports donation because she has seen firsthand how it changes lives.

This year marks the 42nd Annual 9News Parade of Lights. The two-mile parade in Downtown Denver is free to attend and features marching bands, ornate floats and a special appearance by Santa. For more information about the 9News Parade of Lights, including the parade route, visit: http://denverparadeoflights.com/.

Coloradans can register their decision to be donors by saying ‘yes’ each time they obtain or renew a driver license or state ID, or at http://www.DonateLifeColorado.org anytime.

Fairbanks, Alaska (PRWEB) December 02, 2016

The Explore Fairbanks 2017 Official Visitors Guide, a 78-page, full-color booklet that describes Fairbanks year-round opportunities is now available for free. The annual publication is designed to capture the features and attractions specific to life in the region. Fairbanks is defined by the midnight sun, the aurora borealis, the centrally located Chena and Yukon rivers and many miles of wilderness.

Fairbanks delineates the Aurora Season as August 21 through April 21, when visitors have the opportunity of seeing the aurora borealis. Fairbanks location is ideal for northern lights viewing because it is under the “Auroral Oval,” a ring-shaped zone where aurora activity is concentrated. Additionally, low precipitation in Fairbanks contributes to consistently clear nights. Conversely, the Midnight Sun Season runs from April 22 through August 20. The midnight sun shines brightly for the whole summer with the most sunlight occurring between May 17 and July 27, when the sun never dips far enough below the horizon for the sky to actually get dark.

The "Golden Heart of Alaska," Fairbanks is the gateway to the vast Interior and the Arctic. Places situated nearby are Denali National Park, the Arctic Circle, Chena Hot Springs, North Pole and a myriad of villages, refuges and parks. The Arctic is featured prominently as Fairbanks is the home base for travel, research, supplies and transportation to the area. The guide highlights year-round activities available in the frontier community that include fishing, wildlife viewing, birdwatching, hiking, visiting museums and floating the Chena River. Additional activities take place during the winter months, such as dog mushing, ice sculpting, snowmobiling and skiing. The guide also features exhibitions, attractions and performances focused on Alaska Native heritage, contemporary arts and gold rush history.

The calendar of events points out significant events including the World Eskimo-Indian Olympics, the Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race and the World Ice Art Championships. The guide also lists a wide variety of seasonal and year-round accommodations, services, restaurants, shopping and attractions.
