CNN Proposed Obama Town Hall On Gun Violence After San Bernardino Shooting

NEW YORK -- President Barack Obama will take questions live Thursday night from gun control advocates and opponents during a CNN town hall event, which airs amid the White House's push for modest gun regulations through executive action.

The National Rifle Association declined to participate in CNN's event, calling it a "public relations spectacle orchestrated by the White House," and some gun rights advocates have expressed skepticism that critics of the president will be sufficiently represented in the audience.
But a CNN spokeswoman told HuffPost that the network, not the White House, first proposed the idea and that opposing viewpoints will be represented in the broadcast.

CNN first approached the White House after the Dec. 2 mass shooting in San Bernardino, California, according to the spokeswoman, but the president initially declined. She said that proposal sparked a conversation that led to Thursday's "Guns in America" event. Anderson Cooper hosts the 8 p.m. ET special from George Mason University in Virginia.

The town hall setting provides Obama with an opportunity to make his case before a primetime TV audience through conversations with supporters and critics, rather than speeches that even he's acknowledged have become repetitive in the wake of numerous mass shootings.

"Somehow this has become routine," Obama said after an October rampage at Umpqua Community College in Oregon. “The reporting is routine. My response here at this podium ends up being routine. The conversation in the aftermath of it. We've become numb to this."

"We talked about this after Columbine and Blacksburg, after Tucson, after Newtown, after Aurora, after Charleston," he continued. "It cannot be this easy for somebody who wants to inflict harm on other people to get his or her hands on a gun. What's become routine, of course, is the response from those who oppose any kind of common-sense gun regulation."

White House press secretary Josh Earnest said Wednesday that the White House "consulted" with CNN for the event, but the network's journalists will "decide exactly who attends and who gets called on."

During Thursday's press briefing, Earnest said Obama "is looking forward to talking to people on both sides of the issue" and reiterated the president's commitment to the Second Amendment, albeit with regulations such as those he proposed this week. CNN has heavily promoted the primetime event through news segments, frequent commercials and an on-screen countdown clock that's been running since Tuesday.

CNN host Brooke Baldwin, appearing live Thursday afternoon from George Mason University, acknowledged that the NRA and Gun Owners of America declined invitations to participate, but said there will be"many NRA members and gun rights advocates in the audience."

A CNN spokeswoman said the network invited about 100 guests, representing opposing views on gun control and some "whose lives have been directly impacted by guns."

Though NRA Executive Director Chris Cox is skipping CNN's event, he won't be absent from the debate over gun control Thursday night on cable news. Cox will appear on Fox News after CNN's broadcast to respond.

Senators Take A Small Stab At Ending The Ban On Gun Violence Research

$

WASHINGTON -- Four Northeastern senators are pushing to undo a decades-old policy that effectively bans federally funded research into the root causes and effects of gun violence.

In a letter to the chairs of the appropriations committee, Sens. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), Ed Markey (D-Mass.), Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) called for a hearing on the efficacy of gun-related research done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Such research has been frozen since 1996, when Congress passed an amendment declaring that funds could not be used by the CDC “to advocate or promote gun control.” In recent months, calls to revisit the issue have grown louder in the wake of high-profile instances of gun violence.

In their letter to Chairman Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) and Vice Chairwoman Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.), the senators argue that the ban has been dramatically misapplied from its original purpose, noting that its author -- former Rep. Jay Dickey (R-Ark.) -- has expressed regrets that the CDC has stopped doing research into the matter.

“We urge the Committee to hold a hearing on funding CDC gun-violence-prevention research, and to invite Rep. Dickey and [Mark] Rosenberg, [Director of the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control at the CDC from 1994 to 1999] to testify,” the write. “We must take steps to fund gun-violence research, because only the United States government is in a position to establish an integrated public health research agenda to understand the causes of gun violence and identify the most effective strategies for prevention.”

In addition to encouraging an appropriations committee hearing, Markey and Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) have also introduced legislation setting aside $10 million a year for 10 years for the CDC to conduct the research. The latter stands little chance of passage in the current Congress. Even the former might be too big a lift.

Lawmakers have shown little appetite to revisit the CDC ban, believing further studies are either wasteful or a pathway toward federally funded advocacy of gun control measures. Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) largely ducked the issue upon assuming his leadership role. But in the recent omnibus appropriations bill -- like all the others since 1996 -- the Dickey language was once again included.

*Read the full language of the letter below:*

Dear Chairman Cochran and Vice Chairwoman Mikulski,

We write to request that the Committee on Appropriations hold a hearing on appropriating funds for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to conduct research into the causes and prevention of gun violence in the United States, and on the annual appropriations rider that some have interpreted as preventing it.

In 1996, Congress included a rider in the annual appropriations bill that prohibited the CDC from lobbying on behalf of gun control.  Specifically, the rider provides that none of the funds made available to the CDC may be used “to advocate or promote gun control.”  Unfortunately, some have misconstrued this rider not as a ban on supporting legislative efforts to limit access to firearms, but as a ban on supporting scientific research into the causes of gun violence.  This rider, which Congress has included in every subsequent annual appropriations bill, has had the unfortunate consequence of blocking all efforts by the federal government to study the causes of gun violence.

Gun violence continues to plague our country.  Mass shootings, like those in San Bernardino, Roseburg, Lafayette, Chattanooga, Charleston, Newtown, and Aurora have become incomprehensibly commonplace.  Every year, more than 32,000 people in the United States die from gun violence.  The troublesome persistence of shooting incidents only underscores the continued need to support peer-reviewed research.

Even the author of the original rider, former Representative Jay Dickey (R-AR), now supports funding CDC gun-violence research and believes that the rider should not stand in the way.  As Representative Dickey and Mark Rosenberg, Director of the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control at the CDC from 1994 to 1999, recently opined together in theWashington Post:  “Both of us now believe strongly that federal funding for research into gun-violence prevention should be dramatically increased. . . .  However, it is also important for all to understand that [the rider’s] wording does not constitute an outright ban on federal gun-violence prevention research.  It is critical that the appropriation contain enough money to let science thrive and help us determine what works.”

We urge the Committee to hold a hearing on funding CDC gun-violence-prevention research, and to invite Rep. Dickey and Director Rosenberg to testify.  We must take steps to fund gun-violence research, because only the United States government is in a position to establish an integrated public health research agenda to understand the causes of gun violence and identify the most effective strategies for prevention.

An 18-year-old invented a smart gun that only activates with a fingerprint

An 18-year-old invented a smart gun that only activates with a fingerprint In 2012, Kai Kloepfer lived in Boulder, CO — about 35 miles from the Aurora movie theater shooting that killed 12 people. The event inspired the now 18-year-old to look into shootings, and he found that accidental shootings, suicides, and the misuse of firearms actually killed more people every year than mass shootings.

So he set out to develop a technology that could help prevent gun-related tragedies from happening.

What he came up with was a smart gun that only activates when in contact with the right fingerprint. Gun owners would be able to store and save their fingerprints, as well of those of designated users of their choosing. Fingerprints would be stored and saved with military-grade encryption.

"When the owner picks it up, or somebody the owner has chosen, the gun will work for them," the inventor told INSIDER. "But if a child finds it, a teenager tries to use it to commit suicide, or even if… an assailant disarms a police officer, then the gun is locked and unable to be used."

The smart gun would also help support President Obama's executive order on gun control, in which he called for more research on gun safety technology.

Kloepfer is raising money on Indiegogo in order to turn his plastic prototype into a working firearm.

"If I could create a technology that really even saves one person's life, that's probably the goal," he said.

Learn more about the smart gun on Kloepfer's website.

Empty Chair Filled with Meaning for Parents of Gun Violence Victim

$
0
0
We are honored to have received an invitation to sit in the gallery to witness President Obama's last State of the Union address on January 12.

Ironically, in 2012, right after the massacre in the Aurora, Colorado movie theater which claimed the life of our daughter, Jessica Ghawi, along with the lives of 11 others, the presidential debates between Mitt Romney and Barack Obama purposely omitted any discussion on the gun violence issue plaguing our country. So we've come a long way, and the tide is turning in the national conversation about how best to prevent gun violence.

Now, after hundreds of mass shootings and the daily loss of 88 citizens, gun violence claims center stage. The December 2012 mass shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, captivated President Obama and renewed a movement including many new gun safety organizations along with many established organizations and mobilized them to move toward sensible gun regulation.

The White House arranged to leave an empty chair in the gallery. That empty chair represents our loved ones taken by gun violence. It symbolizes the sudden loss and enduring suffering and resolve that each of us who have had a loved one taken by gun violence understand all too well.

Not a day passes without some reminder of the pain and anguish that they will never again grace our table. It reminds us that there will never be another birthday cake or holiday dinner savored with a full table. A seat will always be vacant. This empty seat represents a hole in our hearts that will never heal.

Those of us in the gun violence prevention movement are often chided for being emotional. Well, you are damn right that we bring emotion that can't be dismissed, just as our resolve won't go away. Yet the ones who are yelling the loudest in spreading misinformation are the ones who are fighting the president's proposals.

Since the takeover of the NRA in 1977 -- which turned a sports- and safety-minded organization into a corporate gun lobby -- America has lost over 700,000 citizens. The number of wounded is even more astronomical and costs the country billions of dollars per year.

So when we're described as emotional, you bet we are. We work to save lives by reducing gun violence, so that your family may never experience the kind of pain we manage every day.

We have long hoped to see the issue of gun violence prevention become THE issue of the 2016 election, and it has. We are grateful to our President. We are grateful to the Democratic candidates, especially Gov. Martin O'Malley, Secretary Hillary Clinton, and Sen. Bernie Sanders. They can take a good share of the credit for bringing front and center the issue of how best to save lives by keeping guns out of the wrong hands.

We are not grateful to the GOP candidates who are ruining a once great party by their cowardice and boot licking of the gun lobby, motivated by the desire for donations from the likes of the Koch brothers. History will show that the GOP is becoming a dinosaur for being on the wrong side of history.

The People of the United States have had it with gun violence. We know that change must happen for the good of the whole and that gun violence is a public health and safety issue that is finally being addressed. President Obama is showing the country where many of our problems are with gun regulation and he has taken steps to educate the American people. President Obama and the Democratic candidates are on the right side of history.

So when we think about that empty chair in the gallery, we picture our daughter, Jessi, and all the other family members whose lives have been cut short by gun violence. We are also reminded that just as our grief never goes away, neither does our resolve to save the lives of Americans, some of whom may be members of your own family. We won't stop, because we can't stop until Congress puts our kids' health and safety above the interests of the corporate gun lobby.
