The View From The White House As A Mass Shooting Unfolds
A version of this article was originally published on June 21, following the shooting at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina. It is being republished after yet another mass shooting, this time at a social services center in San Bernardino, California.
WASHINGTON -- On the morning of December 14, 2012, as news trickled in painfully slowly about a shooting at an elementary school in Connecticut, aides gathered in the White House to chart out a response.
Moments of national crises require, at a basic political level, a prompt reaction, if only to demonstrate that the situation is being dealt with. And the president and his aides knew he'd have to deliver remarks as reports from Sandy Hook Elementary School grew worse.
President Barack Obama's speechwriter, Jon Favreau, came in at one point to hand Obama the draft of the speech he'd deliver to press corps waiting in the nearby James Brady Briefing Room, named after Ronald Reagan's press secretary who had himself been a victim of gun violence.
"He barely looked up from his desk and couldn't even look at me because there were tears in his eyes," Favreau recalled.
Twenty kids were dead along with six educators in Newtown, Connecticut. And even though the president occupied the most powerful political perch in the country, there was a sense of helplessness in the room. After talking with Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy and FBI Director Robert Mueller, a draft was finalized. Obama walked into the briefing room at 3:15 p.m.
"I know there is not a parent in America who doesn't feel the same overwhelming grief that I do," he said, speaking in measured tones, staring down carefully to the written text and pausing occasionally to gather himself and wipe tears from his eyes.

Those who have worked at the White House describe these moments as excruciatingly awful. At first, it is a torturous scramble for news from any source available, whether it be television, local officials or law enforcement.
"You just hope they have specific information that is less devastating," one former White House official put it. Once enough information is accumulated, it falls on someone to brief the president, which the official described as "probably the hardest thing you can do in the White House on any given day." (That particular task during Newtown fell on John Brennan, then the Deputy National Security Advisor for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism and now the director of the CIA).
The primary job for the president and his aides is to ensure that no faulty information gets made public and that all the right political levers are pulled. Throughout it all, there is a tremendous tug and pull taking place: the desire to react viscerally to the events unfolding bumps up against the demand to operate conservatively and with precision.
"It is a fog," said Ben LaBolt, Obama's former press hand on gun policy, among other issues, and the press secretary of his 2012 campaign. "You are trying to figure out the facts and the motive and how many people were injured."
For those who have to go before the cameras, the pressure to maintain this balance can be overwhelming. Obama's former press secretary, Jay Carney, said that the briefing he gave after Newtown was the hardest of his tenure.
"People think it was the one after Benghazi but it is not even close," he said.
Often, it is the president who bears this burden first. His job is to not just relay what is being done to respond to the violence but to offer a certain level of empathy, grief and even green shoots of hope for those affected or those just watching.
"The role of the president is many, but one is ministerial in times like this," said Axelrod. "Obviously you want to make sure that everything that should be done is being done and in cases like this they almost certainly are. The main function is to come out and articulate the nation's grief."
As the cases of gun-related mass killings have piled up during his time in office, Obama's approach to these moments has become -- disturbing as it may be to acknowledge -- more practiced; the routine more familiar.
"There is no question that, yeah, he has done this so many times that I don't think that when it comes to figuring out the right tone it is very complicated," said Carney.
You can see as much in watching Obama's responses to instances of gun violence through the years. The dry recounting of the events and calls for reflection and prayer that he displayed early in his administration have become peppered, increasingly, with visible emotions and calls for actions. More recently, they've featured laments, almost angry at times, that no action is taking place.
"He didn't become numb to it," said Favreau. "He became frustrated."
For Favreau, one memorable tipping point was the shooting of moviegoers in Aurora, Colorado, in July 2012. He recalled being with the president on a campaign swing at the time that the news broke.
"You don't have kids yet but being a parent is like having your heart outside of your body all the time," the president told him, Favreau recalled. He was cribbing from someone else. But also reacting to just how little information was known in the immediate aftermath of the shooting, when parents were wondering if their child was among the 12 killed and 70 injured by the shooter, James Holmes.
Six months later, Newtown happened. Obama recited that line in the speech he delivered at the vigil.

WASHINGTON -- On the morning of December 14, 2012, as news trickled in painfully slowly about a shooting at an elementary school in Connecticut, aides gathered in the White House to chart out a response.
Moments of national crises require, at a basic political level, a prompt reaction, if only to demonstrate that the situation is being dealt with. And the president and his aides knew he'd have to deliver remarks as reports from Sandy Hook Elementary School grew worse.
President Barack Obama's speechwriter, Jon Favreau, came in at one point to hand Obama the draft of the speech he'd deliver to press corps waiting in the nearby James Brady Briefing Room, named after Ronald Reagan's press secretary who had himself been a victim of gun violence.
"He barely looked up from his desk and couldn't even look at me because there were tears in his eyes," Favreau recalled.
Twenty kids were dead along with six educators in Newtown, Connecticut. And even though the president occupied the most powerful political perch in the country, there was a sense of helplessness in the room. After talking with Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy and FBI Director Robert Mueller, a draft was finalized. Obama walked into the briefing room at 3:15 p.m.
"I know there is not a parent in America who doesn't feel the same overwhelming grief that I do," he said, speaking in measured tones, staring down carefully to the written text and pausing occasionally to gather himself and wipe tears from his eyes.

The Mundanity of Mass Shootings
I remember the last time I felt the true agony of gun violence. I remember where I was and my reaction and utter state of bewilderment. I sat on a cramped bench during an assembly at my school when I felt the vibration of my phone.
Expecting it to be an update about the Patriots or the Lakers, I scanned around, making sure the teachers would not see me. I then briefly looked at my phone, and to my surprise it was not a text from a friend or a SportsCenter update, but a CNN notification about a shooting.
A shooting at an elementary school. Details emerged after we left the auditorium and within time, it would be known as the infamous Sandy Hook Shooting.
Fast-forward almost three years. I'm walking in the rain to my Spanish class. My phone vibrates and I take a peek. It's a notification from the New York Times. It says "The authorities are responding to reports of a shooting with multiple victims in San Bernardino, CA." I looked at it, felt some sadness and disappointment, then went back to listening to some Justin Bieber song.
What I lacked was this anguish I felt during the Sandy Hook shooting. Obviously, I felt devastation and anger, but really, how uncommon is such a shooting? It's really only a matter of time before the next one.
We've spent the past couple weeks mourning the Paris shooting. After the Paris shooting came the Planned Parenthood shooting. Today, we have the shooting in a San Bernardino facility for the developmentally disabled. It's a sad truth, but in a matter of weeks or months, another shooting may occur, and the San Bernardino shooting will be in the history books with the Tucson and Aurora shootings.
The names flow from my mouth so quickly, like state capitals. Jared Loughner, Adam Lanza, James Holmes, and most recently, Robert Dear. Why do I know these names? They committed mass murders of innocent, kind, and compassionate human beings. They obtained guns and utilized them not for hunting or for sport but for murder.
While I should feel immense sympathy and a desire to make a change, this attitude appears more and more idealistic and unimaginable after each shooting. What really can we do to change the culture of gun violence in the United States?
President Obama is a fantastic orator, but I'm beginning to become a little tired of hearing similar speeches about tragedies in our country and unanswered pleas to prevent gun violence. I'd rather him speak about his executive action on immigration, his economic plans, even BO. Just anything besides offering condolences for gun violence.
Mass shootings should not be normal. We as a country must be united in preventing gun violence. We must not only offer our "prayers, and condolences" as each of the Republican Presidential candidates mentioned. No, we must offer pragmatic solutions. The new president must make it his/her priority to create policies to drastically minimize mass shootings in the United States.
I wish for a day when shootings will no longer be mundane, but will truly be news with ample time to mourn, not just another notification in my lock screen.

Colorado Golf Club Awarded 2019 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship
CommonGround Golf Course Will Serve As Stroke-Play Co-Host Course

The United States Golf Association (USGA) today announced Colorado Golf Club, in Parker, Colo., as the host site for the 2019 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship. This will be the first USGA championship contested at the club. The dates for the championship are Sept. 21-26.
“The USGA is pleased to bring a championship to Colorado Golf Club for the first time,” said Diana Murphy, USGA vice president and Championship Committee chairman. “The course has a proven record in both stroke-play and match-play competition, and the variety of risk-reward options will allow for exciting and dramatic play, helping to identify a champion worthy of hoisting the Robert T. Jones Jr. Memorial Trophy.”
Designed by Bill Coore and two-time Masters champion Ben Crenshaw, Colorado Golf Club opened for play in 2007. The 1,700-acre property was once an Arabian horse ranch and features views of Colorado’s Front Range, dominated by Pikes Peak, Mount Evans and Longs Peak. The course plays through open meadows, foothills of ponderosa pine, natural gullies and streams. Coore and Crenshaw also created a nine-hole short course and 7,000-square-foot short game area to complement the championship course.
“Colorado Golf Club is a strategic and demanding championship venue, and we could not be more proud to welcome the 2019 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship,” said Matt Kellogg, the club’s president. “With its emphasis on the amateur golfer, the Mid-Amateur is meaningful to our members and to golf enthusiasts everywhere. We are thrilled to have the Mid-Amateur as our first USGA championship.”
Located 30 miles southeast of Denver, Colorado Golf Club has already hosted a pair of major golf events. Tom Lehman defeated Fred Couples and David Frost in a playoff to win the 2010 Senior PGA Championship for his first senior major title. The Solheim Cup, a biennial competition that features teams of female professionals representing Europe and the United States, was contested at the club in 2013. Europe defeated the USA, 18-10, for its first win on American soil since the event was established in 1990.
The club hosted a U.S. Open local qualifier in 2008, as well as sectional qualifiers for the U.S. Amateur and U.S. Women’s Amateur in 2007.
CommonGround Golf Course, in Aurora, Colo., will serve as the stroke-play co-host course for the 2019 Mid-Amateur. The course, which was designed by Tom Doak and opened for play in 2009, is the home of the Colorado Golf Association and the Colorado Women’s Golf Association. CommonGround also served as the stroke-play co-host course for the 2012 U.S. Amateur at Cherry Hills Country Club, in Cherry Hills Village, Colo.
The 2019 U.S. Mid-Amateur will be the 32nd USGA championship contested in Colorado. The Broadmoor Golf Club, in Colorado Springs, will host the 2018 U.S. Senior Open. The only other U.S. Mid-Amateur held in the Centennial State was played in 1983 at Cherry Hills, where Jay Sigel won the third of his five USGA championships, 1 up, over Randy Sonnier.
The U.S. Mid-Amateur was first played in 1981. The championship is open to amateurs age 25 and older with a Handicap Index® not exceeding 3.4. The 2016 U.S. Mid-Amateur will be played Sept. 10-15 at Stonewall Links in Elverson, Pa. The 2017 championship is scheduled for Oct. 7-12 at Capital City Club (Crabapple Course) in Atlanta, Ga., and Charlotte (N.C.) Country Club will host the 2018 championship Sept. 22-27.
