Jupiter's moon interaction causes explosive auroras

*Provided by Nanci Bompey, American Geophysical Union*

On Earth, bursts of particles spewed by the Sun spark shimmering auroras, like the Northern Lights, that briefly dance at our planet's poles. But, on Jupiter, there's an auroral glow all the time, and new observations show that this Jovian display sometimes flares up because of a process having nothing to do with the Sun.

Jupiter watchers have long known that the giant planet's ever-present polar auroras - thousands of times brighter and many times bigger than Earth - are powered by both electrically charged particles from the Sun colliding with Jupiter's magnetic field and a separate interaction between Jupiter and one of its many moons, called Io. But there are also auroral explosions on Jupiter, or periods of dazzling brightening, similar to auroral storms on Earth, that no one could definitively trace back to either of those known causes.

*[STORY: Studying Jupiter's atmosphere with cube satellites]*

In the aurora-making interaction of Jupiter and Io, volcanoes on the small moon blast clouds of electrically charged atoms (ions) and electrons into a region surrounding Jupiter that's permeated by the planet's powerful magnetic field, thousands of times stronger than Earth's. Rotating along with its rapidly spinning planet, the magnetic field drags the material from Io around with it, causing strong electric fields at Jupiter's poles. The acceleration of the ions and electrons produce intense auroras that shine in almost all parts of the electromagnetic spectrum but most brightly in high-energy bands, like ultraviolet light and X-rays, that are invisible to unaided human eyes.

Now, new observations of the planet's extreme ultraviolet emissions show that bright explosions of Jupiter's aurora likely also get kicked off by the planet-moon interaction, not by solar activity. A new scientific paper about these observations by Tomoki Kimura of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), in Sagamihara, Kanagawa, Japan, and his colleagues, was published online today in Geophysical Research Letters, a journal of the American Geophysical Union.

*[STORY: The world's best places to see auroras]*

Starting in January 2014, a telescope aboard the JAXA's Hisaki satellite, which focused on Jupiter for two months, recorded intermittent brightening of the giant planet's aurora. The telescope detected sudden flare-ups on days when the usual flow of charged particles from the Sun, known as the solar wind, was relatively weak.

Additional space and ground-based telescopes, including the Hubble Space Telescope, also viewed Jupiter during these lulls in the solar wind. Both Hisaki and Hubble witnessed explosions of the planet's aurora despite the solar wind's calm, suggesting that it's the Jupiter-Io interaction driving these explosions, not charged particles from the Sun, according to the new study. The new research does not address exactly what is happening in the Jovian magnetosphere to cause the temporary brightening of auroral explosions.

And, just because that picture reminds us of a Boston album cover, and because it's just a really freaking cool discovery:

Information Technology Engineering Corporation Prepares for Growth; Chooses JAMIS Prime ERP

Growing technical staffing company supporting aerospace and defense industries says JAMIS Prime’s ease-of-use, configurability and scalability made it the clear choice to support future growth

Lakewood, CO and Aurora, CO (PRWEB) March 25, 2015

Information Technology Engineering Corporation (ITEC) has built a reputation as a market leader in delivering cost-effective, individually tailored staffing solutions that meet the needs of its IT and engineering customers. Yet the company was being held back by accounting software that couldn't handle its growing needs.

“We have a system today that is meant for much smaller companies than what ours has become,” said Randy Dingle, ITEC’s president. “We have 125 employees and counting. We needed a system that would make our jobs easier and take away a lot of the manual tasks that are required with our current system.”

ITEC, which has had average growth of 28% per year for the last five years, wanted enterprise resource planning (ERP) software that would support efforts to maintain an agile and cost-effective back office to better serve its customers. ITEC also wanted real-time visibility into key data to pinpoint growth opportunities, identify areas for improvement and to help the company make better business decisions.

ITEC conducted thorough research and decided to evaluate Microsoft Dynamics, Deltek, QuickBooks with associated govcon utilities and JAMIS. “It was clear right away that Deltek wasn't right for us,” recounted Dingle. “And JAMIS was simply more robust and easier to use than Microsoft Dynamics and QuickBooks. In the end, we decided that JAMIS had the best a solution to fit a business our size and at a reasonable cost.”

Dingle said he was surprised to learn that JAMIS offered such a solution. “There’s a perception that JAMIS only works with larger companies,” he said. “In fact, some of our employees who are staffed with Raytheon use it there. But we can take advantage of JAMIS Prime ERP’s capabilities right away—and it’s very scalable, ensuring we can grow with it.” Dingle adds that the cost was competitive and that ITEC was impressed with the overall professionalism of the JAMIS sales team and implementation team, which is led by SDL Consulting, a certified JAMIS Partner.

The system that JAMIS is replacing at ITEC runs on local servers, which is one reason the company is looking forward to JAMIS Prime ERP’s cloud-based approach. “The system we have been using has too much risk associated with it,” said Dingle. “We really wanted to get to the cloud for better data security.”

Dingle said that JAMIS Prime ERP literally put a halt to the company’s evaluation process. “We were going to look at other systems beyond what we had originally planned to evaluate,” said Dingle. “That is, until we saw JAMIS.”

Propark America installs automated billing equipment to serve ExpressToll and Canopy customers

Commerce City, CO (PRWEB) March 26, 2015

Propark America announced in a ribbon-cutting event Wednesday morning (March 25) that its Canopy Airport Parking facility, servicing Denver International Airport, has expanded its partnership with the E-470 Public Highway Authority to offer non-stop automated billing to ExpressToll customers. ExpressToll is the automated toll billing system used by E-470, the Northwest Parkway and CDOT’s Express Lanes.

ExpressToll account holders who register their transponder number (not their billing account number) with their Canopy 5280 frequent parker account will now be able to enter and exit the facility without stopping, in addition to saving 25% on parking.

Parking charges will be billed to the customer’s 5280 account with Canopy, not to the customer’s ExpressToll account. Billing to Canopy’s 5280 members’ accounts will utilize the same transponder used on E-470. This exclusive automation will allow for swift entrance and exit from Canopy Airport Parking, which is currently the only off-site Denver International Airport parking facility to utilize this technology. Canopy installed the equipment, although it was aided with counsel and vendor referrals from E-470.

“We’re really excited about this latest step in the evolution of our partnership with E-470,” said Lesley Byram, director of sales and marketing for Canopy Airport Parking. “The technology upgrade that was deployed at our facility is going to be a guest convenience that we believe will be very well received by the public.

“Through our long-standing partnership with E-470, we’ve learned that people sign up for ExpressToll because they want convenience and they want value,” continued Byram. “Canopy sought to bring those same ideals to the airport parking experience, so that ExpressToll customers enjoy a seamless experience, from highway to runway.”

For a limited time, as part of the partnership expansion, Canopy Airport Parking is offering existing 5280 frequent parker members a free day of parking for opting into the ExpressToll Rewards program by adding their transponder number to their 5280 account. Canopy is also offering three free days of parking for customers that sign up for their ExpressToll account at the Canopy parking facility. Email 5280@canopyparking.com for more information on how this new partnership works or visit http://www.canopyairportparking.com.

Canopy Airport Parking, which opened in November of 2010, features geothermal heating and cooling, a wind turbine farm, solar panel fields and other advanced technologies, allowing Canopy to run on 75% less energy than comparable facilities. Canopy is LEED Certified Gold and one of North America’s first Demonstrator Sites of the Green Parking Council.

Propark America, headquartered in Hartford, Connecticut, is one of the nation’s leading parking companies, providing full-service parking solutions across all parking markets. Propark operates more than 500 locations in convenient markets across the United States, and is a member of the International Parking Institute, the National Parking Association, and is a Platinum Level Partner of the Green Parking Council. E-470 is the 75-mph toll road that runs along the eastern perimeter of the Denver metropolitan area. The road is not taxpayer-funded and is financed, constructed, operated and governed by the E-470 Public Highway Authority. Astronaut Scott Kelly ready for record-setting space trip

0

Imagine being given a year to float free of gravity, to gaze down at Earth and its changing seasons, to observe the heavens from space as few ever have.

But during that time you could not to take a breath of fresh air, hug a loved one or hear the sound of falling rain, and you were confined to the office that afforded those spectacular views.

Local 6 News partner Florida Today reports NASA astronaut Scott Kelly and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko will attempt to balance those realities during a nearly yearlong mission aboard the International Space Station that they will embark upon Friday.

"The space station is a magical place," said Kelly, discussing the mission earlier this month. "But you never get to leave."

The veteran space fliers are scheduled to blast off in a Soyuz spacecraft at 3:42 p.m. Eastern time from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, and reach their home for the next year — roughly 250 miles above Earth — less than six hours later.

They'll be joined for the ride up by cosmonaut Gennady Padalka, who will visit the orbiting research complex for a standard six-month expedition.

By doubling that mission duration for two crew members for the first time on ISS — four cosmonauts lived for at least a year on Russia's Mir station — NASA and its partners hope to learn more about the issues astronauts might face on even longer voyages to Mars.

"The one-year increment will expand the bounds of how we live and work in space and will increase our knowledge regarding the effects of microgravity on humans as we prepare for future missions beyond low-Earth orbit," said Bill Gerstenmaier, head of NASA's human spaceflight programs, when the mission was announced in 2012.

The space agencies are discussing assigning more astronauts to year-long missions.

It's something Kelly, a 51-year-old father of two daughters (ages 20 and 11) who spent nearly six months on the station ending in early 2011, was not enthusiastic about at first.

"I'll be honest with you, I wasn't all that interested," he said. "After mulling it over, talking to my family, friends, girlfriend, I decided that the challenges that staying in space for a whole year presented was appealing to me even considering the sacrifices."

Kornienko's wife cried upon learning about his second long spaceflight — this time for an entire year — but later supported the decision. The 54-year-old grandfather will fly with pictures of his family and his deceased parents.

"We have the chance to be the first to spend a whole year on the space station, and it will be of great use for future generations for science and for those who might fly further to Mars and to outer space," he said, through a translator.

Kelly does not conceal how difficult he expects living on the station for nearly a year — 342 days, to be precise — to be. But hopefully he'll experience nothing like the family crisis he confronted during his first expedition.

Halfway through that flight he learned about the shooting of his sister-in-law, then-U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords, who is married to his twin brother, former astronaut Mark Kelly. Giffords continues to recover, but that day both Kellys endured early media reports that she had died.

Mark Kelly is in Central Asia to see his brother's launch.

Researchers will take advantage of a twin's involvement in the mission to study spaceflight's long-term effects. They'll compare how Scott responds over the year in microgravity to Mark, a four-time shuttle flier, back on the ground.

Months in space are known to cause loss of bone and muscle mass, weakened immune systems and impaired vision, but the upcoming mission will track those health impacts over more time, with better medical technology than was available during Russia's previous year-plus missions.

"That's one of the reasons why we're doing this flight and flying for longer than we have before, to better understand some of these effects and how to mitigate them for our future exploration goals," said Scott Kelly.

Based on experience and advice from cosmonauts who have flown longer — the longest single trip lasted 438 days — Kelly expects his biggest challenge will be pacing his workload to avoid burnout.

Appropriately, the mission patch for his Soyuz crew features marathon runners.

"I hope I get six months into this and I have six months of energy left in the battery to get to the end," he said. "I think I will."

On his last flight, however, he found he began feeling mentally ready to return home about two-thirds of the way through — after just four months, in that case. He hopes not to feel that way so soon this time.

It might help that Kelly will participate in a busy period involving what he calls the station's "reassembly." A module and other components will be rearranged, and he'll likely perform his first spacewalk.

During free time he plans to talk to family and friends with a Skype-like phone connection, see them in occasional video conferences, send emails, read books and watch TV shows uplinked to him, including Houston Texans football games.

"It hasn't escaped me that I'll watch a whole baseball season, which is very long, and a whole football season," he said.

He plans to maintain a daily journal to document his thoughts and feelings as the lengthy mission progresses, experiences he'll share with scientists.

In addition to Kornienko, Kelly will spend parts of his year in orbit with 13 others coming to and going from the outpost, including the three crew members there now. But he knows he'll miss the variety of people and weather on Earth, and will grapple with the monotony of being in the same place for so long.

"You'll miss your friends and family on Earth," he said. "You also miss being able to leave, being able to go outside your place of work. It's kind of like you're at work 24/7 for a whole year."

At the same time, he's looking forward to seeing how parts of the planet change over an entire year, its thin, fragile atmosphere, and visually stunning space weather phenomenon like the aurora.

By the end of the mission, Kelly's career total of 522 days in space will set a U.S. record, surpassing Mike Fincke's 382 days. But it will be Gennady Padalka, now 56 and launching with Kelly on his fifth spaceflight, who upon returning in six months will own the all-time record: 888 days, or more than two years of his life.

Reluctant initially, Kelly finally welcomed the opportunity to fly in space again, perhaps for the last time, in a different and more demanding way.

"I don't think I've ever done anything that will be as hard as this," he said. "I look forward to this flight and the challenge that the duration presents." Reported by Click Orlando 12 hours ago.
