Aurora Shooter Now a Muslim

Aurora Shooter Now a Muslim James Holmes, the gunman who massacred 12 people and left 58 others wounded in Aurora, Colorado last July 20, has decided he is now a Muslim so he can justify his barbarous assault. One prison source said, “He has brainwashed himself into believing he was on his own personal jihad and that his victims were infidels.”

Holmes now prays five times a day, eats a strictly Muslim diet and has grown a thick beard. He also takes hours every day to study the Koran.

Apparently some Muslim inmates have taken umbrage at Holmes’ conversion. The same prison source claimed, “None of them condone forms of terrorism or extremism. And they don't want their religion to be connected to that awful shooting.”

Neither Holmes nor his lawyers have revealed how he will plead when the trial starts August 5. Reported by Breitbart 14 hours ago.

Colorado governor signs new gun control legislation

New legislation makes background checks mandatory for private and online gun sales and bans sale of large magazine rounds

Colorado's governor has signed new gun-control legislation, that require background checks for all private gun sales and a ban on large magazine rounds.

The move signals a change for Democrats who have traditionally shied away from gun control in a state with a pioneer tradition of gun ownership.

Debate in the Democratic-controlled legislature was intense, and Republicans warned that voters would make Democrats pay. The bills failed to garner a single Republican vote.

The Democratic governor John Hickenlooper signed bills on Wednesday that require background checks for private and online gun sales and ban ammunition magazines that hold more than 15 rounds.

The bills' approval came exactly eight months after dozens of people were shot in Aurora, and a day after the executive director of the state Corrections Department, Tom Clements, was shot and killed at his home. Hickenlooper signed the legislation right after speaking with reporters about Clements' slaying.

Hickenlooper said large-capacity magazines "have the potential to turn killers into killing machines." He also said he realized some gun owners may be inconvenienced but that "the potential for damage seems to outweigh, significantly, the inconvenience that people would have," he said.

The bills signal a historic change for Democrats in a state where owning a gun is as common as owning a car in some rural areas.

"He just slapped rural Colorado right in the face," said Republican Senator Brophy, who represents an eastern plains district. "They are overwhelmingly upset about this."

Both bills take effect on 1 July. People who currently own larger-capacity magazines will be able to keep them.

At the signing ceremony, Hickenlooper was surrounded by lawmakers who sponsored the bills, and relatives of mass shootings. Hickenlooper also signed requiring buyers to pay fees for background checks.

Each time he signed a bill, applause erupted from lawmakers and their guests, who included Jane Dougherty, whose sister was killed in the attack at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut; Sandy Phillips, whose daughter was killed in Aurora; and Tom Mauser, whose son was killed in the 1999 Columbine shooting in Colorado.

Phillips, who lost daughter Jessica Ghawi, reminded Hickenlooper that it was the eight-month anniversary of the theater rampage.

"You've given us a real gift today," she told the governor.

Later, Phillips added: "Thank you so much. You're leading the entire country."

Dougherty thanked Hickenlooper with tears in her eyes. Mauser also expressed gratitude.

"I knew it would be a long haul," he said. "But I had faith in the people of Colorado."

Democratic representative Rhonda Fields, who represents the district that includes the Aurora theater, said the governor had signed "common-sense legislation."

"Gun violence is a problem nationwide, and sadly in the state of Colorado, we are all too familiar with some of these tragedies," said Fields.

Lawmakers debated firearms proposals after the Columbine High School shooting, and began requiring background checks for buyers at gun shows. But nothing they did then was as sweeping as the proposals they took up this year.

This year, Colorado lawmakers succeeded while members of their party stumbled in other states.

Washington state's Democrat-controlled House failed this month to pass a universal background check bill. A bill requiring background checks at gun shows in New Mexico also stalled in that Democrat-led Legislature.

Republicans have warned that voters will punish Hickenlooper and other Democrats who voted in favor of the measures.

"The real solution here is at the ballot box in 2014," Brophy said.

Republicans have said limiting magazine sizes will drive jobs from the state, and ultimately won't prevent criminals from getting larger magazines in other states.

One Colorado-based manufacturer of ammunition magazines disclosed plans to relocate because of the new restrictions.

Police chiefs in urban areas supported the bills, but some rural county sheriffs opposed the new background checks, arguing the move is unenforceable and endangers Second Amendment rights.

Hickenlooper said law enforcement should try to find common ground.

"This shouldn't be rural versus urban. We are one state," he said. Reported by guardian.co.uk 13 hours ago.

Senate Bill Would Dissolve County Airport Authority, Sanitation District Patch Glen Ellyn, IL --

Illinois Sen. Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) has co-sponsored a bill that would give the DuPage County Board authority to dissolve smaller units of government such as the county airport authority, county fair and exposition authority and sanitation districts.

Cullerton's bill is the first goal of the newly formed DuPage County Caucus, a group of nine Illinois state senators focused on promoting the interests of DuPage County, according to a news release from Sen. Don Harmon (D-Oak Park).

“DuPage County is a unique part of the state,” Harmon, founder and co-chair of the DuPage County Caucus said in a statement Thursday.

“Many of its communities have similar concerns and expect similar things from state government. I thought it was important for all the senators who represent the area to discuss these issues and form an advocacy plan.”

In addition to Harmon, who serves as President Pro Tempore, the DuPage County Caucus includes Christine Radogno (R-Lemont), the Senate Republican Leader, Co-Chair Michael Connelly (R-Wheaton), Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park), Kirk Dillard (R-Westmont), Linda Holmes (D-Aurora), Dan Kotowski (D-Park Ridge), Pat McGuire (D-Joliet) and Jim Oberweis (R-North Aurora).

The legislation, Senate Bill 494, would affect the county airport authority, county fair and exposition authority and sanitary districts. The county board would have to dissolve the authorities by ordinance, including a hearing before the vote. Current law requires a voter referendum to dissolve these appointed boards and authorities, according to the release.

"Chairman Cronin and the County Board are committed to taking bold and innovative steps to reduce duplication of government services,"  Connelly said in a statement. "This legislation will enable DuPage County to set a trend for others to follow." Reported by Patch 6 hours ago.

Attempted Child Abduction Under Investigation by Aurora Police Patch Batavia, IL --

*The follwing information was provided by the Aurora Police Department.*

Aurora Police are investigating an attempted child abduction that occurred on the City’s west side Thursday afternoon, March 21.

At around 2:40 p.m., two girls, ages 5 and 10, were walking home from school in the area of Laurel Drive and Robert Street where they saw a vehicle stopped in the street.

They described the car as a newer, black, Toyota Camry, with an Illinois license plate that began with the number ‘9’. As they continued to walk, the driver of the vehicle rolled down the passenger side window, and while motioning with his hand, told the 5 year old to come over to his car.  The 10 year old girl told the man that neither she nor the 5 year old would come near him and they backed away.

At that point, the driver, described as a white male around 27 years old with a large build, acne on his face, a small mustache, and wearing a black shirt and black hat, pulled the vehicle closer to the curb.  The girls could then see that the man was not wearing any pants.  He proceeded to say a sexually explicit comment to them while touching his genitals before driving away eastbound on Robert Street.

Police are asking anyone with information to call investigators at (630) 256-5500 or Aurora Area Crime Stoppers at (630) 892-1000.  Callers to Crime Stoppers are anonymous and qualify for a cash reward of up to $5000 for information that leads to any arrests. Reported by Patch 14 hours ago.

PHOTOS: About 50 Gallons of Diesel Fuel Spills into Batavia Stormwater on Kirk Road Patch Geneva, IL --

About 50 gallons of diesel fuel spilled into the Batavia stormwater system around 2 p.m. Friday, March 22, following a truck fuel-tank leak near the intersection of Douglas Road and Kirk Road in Batavia.

The leak was caused when a drive shaft broke and punctured two holes in the truck's fuel tank, Batavia Deputy Fire Chief Randy Banker said at the scene.

Batavia police and fire officials reported to Douglas Road around 2 p.m., and Batavia public works personnel, North Aurora and Fermilab spill units, and Kane County personnel were at the scene as of 3 p.m.

The Kane County Highway Department and the Environmental Protection Agency were contacted, as well, Banker said.

At 3 p.m. traffic on Kirk Road was not affected by the cleanup effort.

Tri-Com Dispatch reported the spill has been stopped and some emergency vehicles were leaving as of 3:44 p.m.

Clean-up crews were located at the apparent accident point on Douglas Road about 50 feet west of the intersection of Kirk Road and at a second location along the west side of Kirk Road just north of the railroad tracks near Wilson Street.

At 5:02 p.m., Engine 2 cleared the scene and turned over mitigation efforts to a cleanup company.

Patch will attempt to determine what the hazardous effects might be, if any, of that amount of diesel fuel entering the stormwater system.

"Diesel fuel, oil, antifreeze and other vehicle fluids are toxic to the environment," according to Tercenter.com. "Prevent contaminants from entering the stormwater system. ... Check for fluid leaks and immediately repair and clean up any leaks that are found. (Cleanup poses) challenges because of the immediate potential dangers of water pollution."

Patch will provide additional updates as more information is available from official sources.

Editor's note: A previous version of this article noted that the spill was near the Suncast Corporation at 701 N. Kirk Road in Batavia. The spill was not on the Suncast site. Reported by Patch 2 minutes ago.

Lorraine Devon Wilke: The Mainstreaming of Porn: Is It Ruining Sex for Our Younger Generations?

$
0
0
Porn has gone officially mainstream.

No one whispers about it anymore. There's no need for dark theaters where furtive men skulk with guilt and damp handkerchiefs. Women need not giggle about Victorian novels with "dirty parts." Kids don't have to wait for Sex Ed, mom and dad, or that kid down the street who'll show them a penis. No, the Internet has democratized the visual narrative of anatomical sex and every kid with a computer and a door on their room is online and gettin' it on, women have made the remarkably unremarkable book Fifty Shades of Gray a bestseller, and men likely know more about the minutia of labial folds than they ever imagined they would.

Welcome to Porn 2.0. Or are we already at 3?

Given its ubiquity and availability, there's no surprise in conversations I've had with younger adults who admit that porn comprises the bulk of their sexual mentoring and messaging, where they pick up their standards and practices, and how they learn to view the opposite (or same) sex in terms of visual composition and body parts (and really, that's pretty much the focus of porn, isn't it?). I've talked to and observed young women anxious that their breasts aren't big enough, butts small enough, or fashion sense "hot" enough. I've talked to young men who say they imbibe porn on a regular basis and have grown to expect partners free of pubic hair "because that's just what we're used to" based on what they're watching (and teen and 20-something girls appear to be complying, as corroborated by a gynecologist friend of mine). When both infantilizing a woman's body and demanding a Pamela Anderson rack are the expected ideals for women today, I get bone-weary for my younger sisters.

Now before you get all snitty about how I'm this or that, I'm well aware of how protective, defensive, and proprietary many feel about their porn. As a news and opinion writer for a number of years, I've become well-versed on the heat that gets incited when discussing things like the Second Amendment, religion in politics, or Chick-fil-A, but I learned by surprise, after writing a piece called It's Not HBO, It's Porn, just how passionate people get about their pornography. I was so pummeled for making critical statements about the gratuitous use of porn-level sex in mainstream TV, I approach this discussion with the same caution I might approach gun control or gay marriage.

None at all.

Because it's been mainstreamed; it's come out from behind the curtain into the bright light of public analysis, much like the penises and waxed vaginas we now see everywhere, and that makes it fair game. We've got The Daily Beast running a sympathy piece by porn star Aurora Snow about how damn hard porn is on a girl's body (Blood, Sweat and Sex: My Hard Life in Porn); we've got the Mr.Skin website, described as "the world's foremost authority on celebrity nudity... the web's #1 go-to destination for the complete skinny on Hollywood starlets at their hottest"; we've got TV shows casting porn stars like Sasha Grey for the sheer PR buzz of casting a porn star (see, amongst other things, the late, great Entourage). We've got a culture that not only aggrandizes, utilizes and idealizes porn in every nook and cranny of life, but one that, oddly, can turn it around to bully and berate anyone who might find the hypersaturation a tad hyperbolic.

Sigh.

I was on a panel recently on the topic of whether or not men's body parts are being as amply represented as women's in TV and film (they're not), and as we discussed these matters of earth-shattering importance, Mr. Skin himself (aka Jim McBride) asked me what I had against porn. As I told Jim: nothing. Have at it, as people have for the last many centuries. Use it, enjoy it, be inspired by it, get off to it, but do we really need penises and vaginas on the kitchen table, literally and figuratively? Isn't there some room for discretion and selectiveness about sex, or has the notion of connecting those body parts to something real and personal become as outdated as pubic hair?

I suspect it's like the old adage about Catholic girls who morph into insatiable party animals once out of bondage (to borrow a porn image). While that hardly applies to every Catholic girl, it does seem to apply to porn. Now that it's been mainstreamed, taken out of the back room, pulled out from those seedy theaters, it's on every menu on every table. One TV show after another has entered the race to feature the most naked women putting body parts to work in service of... well, if not the plot (rarely required), at least the viewing pleasure of porn-savvy audiences. A few penises show up in the bolder shows and movies. We've got premiere cable sharing "Real Sex" with us, every kind of online viewing option available at the click of a key, and little (none?) of it supplies emotional context or purpose outside of physical gratification... because we're in the "Age of Porn" and anything goes: discretion, selectively, aesthetics, plot narrative, or oversaturation be damned.

But beyond the gladiator-like viewing of pumping participants, what is all this doing to the young people coming up in the world and just learning about sex; just grasping what to do with those oft-photographed and widely used body parts? It used to be parents, schools, and mentors translated the mysteries, magic, and confusions of sex to up-and-comers; now, even if parents and schools do get to them first, it's porn that does the heavy lifting. And I question whether Aurora Snow, Sasha Grey or the bevy of bouncing babes and boys who saturate every screen, story, reality show and website help our developing young adults translate the many mixed and sometimes soul-killing messages much of porn conveys. They may be amazingly gymnastic and libido tickling, but they leave out the antiquated notions of tenderness, connection, fidelity and, dare I say, love.

When teens and young women feel generalized pressure to "look like porn stars"; when boys don't seem to grasp that photographing and "fingering" a drunk, unconscious teen constitutes rape, and when anyone reticent about dragging sex from its private quarters to the well-lit mainstream is considered pathetic and prudish, there are some serious things to consider.

Enjoy your porn responsibly, call me names if you'd like, but I want to assure young girls that they don't have to crawl across the floor if they don't want to; don't have get boob jobs to please porn-prompted boyfriends, and don't have to regress their vaginas to pre-puberty status in order to enjoy oral sex. They can rise above peer and cultural pressure, love their bodies as they are, and assert their sexuality without being obligated to kiss a girl for a boy or drop to their knees for love. I also hope we can imbue our young men with a more expansive view of women, sex, and the visual expectations the world they live in seems to encourage.

Because we are all more than our body parts, gynecological or otherwise. Tell that to porn.

Sen. Kotowski In Attempt to Reduce Government Patch Park Ridge, IL --

"This legislation will enable DuPage County to set a trend for others to follow."

Kotowski's district extends from DuPage County to Park Ridge. Reported by Patch 19 hours ago.
