Researchers Use NASA And Other Data To Look Into The Heart Of A Solar Storm

*Karen C. Fox, NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center*

A space weather storm from the sun engulfed our planet on Jan. 21, 2005. The event got its start on Jan. 20, when a cloud of solar material, a coronal mass ejection or CME, burst off the sun and headed toward Earth. When it arrived at our planet, the ring current and radiation belts surrounding Earth swelled with extra particles, while the aurora persisted for six hours. Both of these are usually signs of a very large storm – indeed, this was one of the largest outpouring of solar protons ever monitored from the sun. But the storm barely affected the magnetic fields around Earth – disturbances in these fields can affect power grids on the ground, a potential space weather effect keenly watched for by a society so dependent on electricity.

Janet Kozyra, a space scientist at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, thought this intriguing combination of a simultaneously weak and strong solar storm deserved further scrutiny. In an effort to better understand -- and some day forecast -- such storms and their potential effects on human technology, an unusual event like this can help researchers understand just what aspects of a CME lead to what effects near Earth.

"There were features appearing that we generally only see during extreme space weather events, when by other measures the storm was moderate," said Kozyra. "We wanted to look at it holistically, much like terrestrial weather researchers do with extreme weather. We took every single piece of data that we could find on the solar storm and put it together to see what was going on."

With observations collected from ground-based networks and 20 different satellites, Kozyra and a group of colleagues, each an expert in different aspects of the data or models, found that the CME contained a rare piece of dense solar filament material. This filament coupled with an unusually fast speed led to the large amount of solar material observed. A fortuitous magnetic geometry, however, softened the blow, leading to reduced magnetic effects. These results were published in the Aug. 14, 2014, issue of Journal of Geophysical Research, Space Physics.

The researchers gathered data from spacecraft orbiting in Earth's ionosphere, which extends up to 600 miles above the planet’s surface, and satellites above that, orbiting through the heart of Earth's magnetic environment, the magnetosphere. The massive amount of data was then incorporated into a variety of models developed at the University of Michigan’s Center for Space Environment Modeling, which are housed at the Community Coordinated Modeling Center at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, a facility dedicated to providing comprehensive access to space weather models.

With the models in hand, the team could put together the story of this particular solar storm. It began with the CME on Jan. 20, 2005. The European Space Agency and NASA's Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, or SOHO, captured images of the CME. At their simplest, CMEs look like a magnetic bubble with material around the outside. In this case, there was an additional line of colder, denser solar material – an electrically charged gas called plasma – inside called a solar filament. Solar filaments are ribbons of dense plasma supported in the sun’s outer atmosphere – the corona -- by strong magnetic fields. Filament material is 100 times denser and 100 times cooler than the surrounding atmosphere. When the supporting magnetic fields erupt, the filaments are caught up in the explosive release that forms the CME. Despite observations that the majority of eruptions like this involve solar filaments, the filaments are rarely identified in disturbances that reach Earth. Why this might be, is a mystery – but it means that the presence of the solar filament in this particular event is a rare sighting.

Subsequent observations of the CME showed it to be particularly fast, with a velocity that peaked at around 1800 miles per second before slowing to 600 miles per second as it approached Earth. Just how many CMEs have filaments or how the geometry of such filaments change as they move toward Earth is not precisely known. In this case, however, it seems that the dense filament sped forward, past the leading edge of the CME, so as it slammed into the magnetosphere, it delivered an extra big dose of energetic particles into near-Earth space.

What happened next was observed by a flotilla of Earth-orbiting scientific satellites, including NASA's IMAGE, FAST and TIMED missions, the joint European Space Agency, or ESA, and NASA's Cluster, the NASA and ESA's Geotail, the Chinese and ESA's Double Star-1; other spacecraft 1 million miles closer to the sun including SOHO and NASA's Advanced Composition Explorer, Wind various other spacecraft; as well as the National Science Foundation-supported ground-based SuperDARN radar network. At the time Cluster was in the solar wind directly upstream of Earth. Meanwhile, Double Star-1 was passing from the outer region of the planet’s magnetic field and entering the magnetosphere. This enabled it to observe the entry of the solar filament material as it crossed into near-Earth space.

“Within one hour of the impact, a cold, dense plasma sheet formed out of the filament material," said Kozyra. "High density material continued to move through the magnetosphere for the entire six hours of the filament’s passage."

Despite the intense amount of plasma carried by the CME, it still lacked a key component of a super storm. The magnetic fields embedded in this CME generally pointed toward Earth's north pole, just as Earth's own magnetic fields do. This configuration causes far fewer disruptions to our planet's system than when the CME's fields point southward. When pointing south, the CME's fields clash with Earth's, peeling them back and setting off magnetic perturbations that cascade through the magnetosphere.

The magnetic field orientation is what kept this solar storm to low levels. On the other hand, the extra solar material from the filament catalyzed long-term aurora over the poles and enhanced the particle filled radiation belts around Earth, characteristic of a larger storm.

"This event, with its unusual combination of space weather effects really demonstrates why it's important to look at the entire system, not just individual elements," said Kozyra. "Only by using all of this data, by watching the event from the beginning to the end, can we begin to understand all the different facets of an extreme storm like this."

Understanding what created the facets of this particular 2005 storm adds to a much larger body of knowledge about how different kinds of CMEs can affect us here at Earth. By knowing what factors lead to the total strength of a storm, we can better learn to predict what the sun is sending our way.

This work was supported by NASA’s Heliophysics Division, in combination with the National Science Foundation’s Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences.

Smart Guns, Guts, and the NRA: Shoot-Out at the Massachusetts Corral

0
0
America doesn't have a gun control issue. It has an impulse control issue.

Gun control advocates came to realize that if they couldn't push legislation through Congress in the wake of Newtown and Aurora, it wasn't going to happen anytime soon.

And yet, mass killings continue to haunt the headlines with no apparent way to curtail them. Except, possibly, for one approach: so-called Smart Guns.

Smart Guns are guns that are biometrically tied to the legitimate owner, so that no one else can accidentally fire them or steal them to commit mayhem. The technology takes guns out of the wrong hands, stopping accidental shootings in the home, criminals stealing guns to commit crime, and many other forms of preventable gun violence.

The NRA sees Smart Guns as a threat to Second Amendment rights and triggered (pun intended) a boycott of Smith & Wesson, after they worked to develop a Smart Gun in conjunction with the Clinton administration. The boycott nearly destroyed the fabled gunmaker in 2000.

No state has passed a law mandating the sale of Smart Guns, even though proponents claim that the technology exists to make them work right and save innocent lives. Which brings us to the fabled Commonwealth of Massachusetts, engine of social change, as evidenced by then-Governor Romney's embrace of government healthcare.

Now entering the Smart Gun battle: Warren Tolman, a Democratic candidate for State Attorney General, locked in a tight primary campaign to be decided Tuesday, September 9. In Democrat-heavy Massachusetts, the primary winner inevitably wins the prize in the November general election.

Tolman has taken the unique position that the Massachusetts Attorney General can use the authority granted by the state's consumer protection law, Chapter 93A, to promulgate regulations that mandate Smart Gun technology on all new guns sold in the Commonwealth.

His opponents beg to differ. Tolman's Democratic challenger, Maura Healey, a Harvard grad and a former assistant attorney general, has said, "I don't see the authority for that within the office. I do think it's something that the legislature could consider." She later told a debate audience: "It is safer to do by legislation than by regulation. It makes it less vulnerable to legal challenge in court."

If Tolman wins on Tuesday, he'll face Republican John Miller in November. Miller also believes that Tolman is overreaching. "The role of the attorney general," Miller told the State House News Service, "is to enforce the state's constitution and the laws passed and enacted by the legislature and governor. It is not the role of the Attorney General to bypass either."

Tolman's stand places him in the line of fire of the NRA, which claims not to oppose Smart Gun technology but disseminates its concerns about the constitutionality and safety of such weapons in gun owner discussion forums online. The primary election -- and perhaps even the general election -- may turn on Tolman's intent to make every gun in Massachusetts a Smart Gun.

If Tolman were to succeed, and if his approach passed the inevitable legal challenges, Massachusetts could be sounding the starting gun for Smart Gun legislation across the United States. New Jersey, for example, has already passed legislation declaring that as soon as some other state takes the lead and mandates Smart Guns, the Garden State will require Smart Gun sales three years later.

John Rosenthal, a gun owner and the founder of the gun control advocacy group Stop Handgun Violence, believes Tolman's effort to mandate Smart Gun technology is crucial to saving lives.

"Smart personalized guns are the single most effective way to stop preventable gun homicides, suicides and accidents without any inconvenience to law abiding gun owners," Rosenthal said. "Gun manufacturers could make them today and we simply need leaders like Warren Tolman to require and incentive them to do so."

It's a gutsy position for Tolman to take. He has far better name recognition than Healey and a six-point lead in the polls going into Labor Day weekend. Tolman is no stranger to controversy, though, once earning the sobriquet "anti-smoking Nazi" from Rush Limbaugh for his role in passing anti-Big Tobacco legislation in the Massachusetts State House. Tolman is also the author and guiding hand behind the last major campaign finance and ethics reform law to pass in Massachusetts, all the way back in 1994.

Tolman's opponents, seizing on the Smart Gun issue, are locked and loaded. But the former state legislator doesn't seem to mind the fight.

"There were more than 11,000 gun violence deaths in this country in 2010," Tolman told me. "And an additional 20,000 gun deaths came from accidents and suicides. If we wait for the legislature to do something, we'll be waiting a long time. How many more innocent people have to die because politicians are afraid of the gun lobby? My attitude is, let's make the change right now." Reported by Huffington Post 4 hours ago.

About DESIGNxRI

DESIGNxRI (DxRI) is an initiative working to coalesce the design talent in Rhode Island. Our goal is to maximize the assets of the design community and highlight its innovative problem-solving practices to create more business opportunities and nurture growth in the design industries in Rhode Island.

Rhode Island is a hot-bed of activity around design. We have the 3rd largest concentration of creative sector jobs in the country, after New York and California. We host the 2nd most industrial designers per capita than any other state, and a study of the creative industries in RI between 2007 and 2012 found design businesses had the largest change within all the creative industries being analyzed – a positive one, adding 500 new businesses during that time period. While most know of the vibrancy of the arts in RI, design is just now starting to reveal itself as an important part of RI’s economy. Despite this growth, design has been largely under the radar as a strong economic sector in Rhode Island.

Michael Bloomberg Gives $1 Million toward Washington State Gun Control

Michael Bloomberg Gives $1 Million toward Washington State Gun Control On August 29, Michael Bloomberg-funded Everytown for Gun Safety confirmed plans to give $1 million to Initiative 594, the gun control push in Washington state.

This means Bloomberg is coming alongside other one-percenters--like Bill Gates, Nicolas Hanauer, and Steve Ballmer--to heave gun control onto the shoulders of Washington state residents.

As Breitbart News reported on August 26, Gates and his wife have given $1 million for the gun control push, Hanauer has given well over a $1 million, and Ballmer and his wife have given nearly $600,000.

The gun control they are supporting--Initiative 594--will require an end to private gun sales in the state of Washington so that every gun buyer, whether buying from a sporting goods store or a neighbor, will have to go through the same background checks Elliot Rodger (Santa Barbara gunman), Ivan Lopez (2014 Ft. Hood gunman), Paul Ciancia (LAX gunman), Aaron Alexis (D.C. Navy Yard gunman), Nidal Hasan (2009 Ft. Hood gunman), and James Holmes (Aurora theater gunman) went through to get their guns.

The Seattle Times reported that the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms is not impressed with Bloomberg's decision to enter the fray in the Washington state gun control push, but it is not surprised, either. Committee Chairman Alan Gottlieb said, "It looks more like 'Every Billionaire for Gun Control' wants to buy this election. Voters should be very concerned that their rights are for sale."

Apollo Minerals commences drilling at Mars Aurora Tank

0
0
Apollo Minerals (ASX:AON) is expected to trade firmer after commencing highly anticipated drilling at the Mars Aurora Tank prospect in South Australia.

The first drill hole will test a strong chargeability anomaly possibly associated with surface gold geochemistry, and the second hole will test an undrilled, non-magnetic dense body in proximity to historic drilling which returned anomalous iron, copper and gold.

Large-scale IOCG targets at Bundi South and other Eaglehawk joint venture sites will also be tested as part of this drill program.

The program consists of 2300 metres of reverse circulation and diamond drill core, and will be Apollo’s largest to date.

Preliminary results will be available from late September.

Apollo is earning a 75% interest in the Mars Aurora Tank from Marmota Energy (ASX:MEU), and holds 100% of the adjacent Mars Prospect situated immediately south.

In July, Apollo raised $2.2 million through a placement of 100 million shares at $0.022 to fund the drilling.

Dominic Tisdell, CEO, commented: “We are very happy to have begun what is our first major copper and gold focused drilling program on the two joint venture properties Apollo has secured the rights to earn 75% interests in – Aurora Tank and Eaglehawk.

"Each project has a number of exciting targets and we look forward to continuing to keep our shareholders informed of results as we continue with this drilling program over the coming months.”

*
High impact drilling*

This drilling program has been keenly awaited by many in the market for several months, which is not surprising given geological and geophysical similarities of the Mars Aurora Tank prospect to the giant Prominent Hill IOCG deposit.

In 2013, Prominent Hill produced 73,362 tonnes of copper and 128,045 ounces of gold contained in concentrates - so if Apollo discovers anything of that magnitude it is likely to do very good things to its share price.

Mars Aurora Tank is just one of a number of large IOCG targets identified as part of the joint venture with Marmota, including the Bundi South target.

These will also be drill tested during this program.*Analysis*

Given the size of the targets and Apollo's lean market cap of around $13 million, market interest in this drill campaign is high.

Interest should continue to gather momentum as drilling progresses and assays draw near, as it is not every day that IOCG targets of this size and potential are drill tested.

Add this to the current drilling at Commonwealth Hill with Robert Friedland's High Power Exploration, and Apollo has multiple high impact price catalysts to look forward to in the immediate future.
