When climate change denial is promoted in mainstream news

Including articles and comments from figures such as Matthew Ridley and Nigel Lawson without balance misleads the British public.

On 12 August, the Times newspaper published a long article by Matthew Ridley under the headline “The world's gone to Hell, but trust me, it is getting much better”.

Ridley argued that a number of indicators showed that the quality of life has been improving across the globe.

However, he provided an inaccurate and misleadingly rose-tinted picture of environmental degradation. For instance, Ridley claimed that “forest cover is increasing in many countries”. This gave a false impression of reality. The most recent study of the issue, published last year in the journal Science, found that 0.8m square kilometres of new forest were added between 2000 and 2012, but 2.3m square kilometres, roughly the same size as Portugal, were lost during the same period.

Similarly, Ridley's article suggested that “there is no global increase in floods”, and “there has been a decline in the severity of droughts”. Both statements were grossly misleading. Climate change is increasing global average temperature, but its impact on extreme weather differs across the world. Some regions are becoming wetter while others are becoming drier.

The most authoritative assessment of the evidence was presented by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change last year. It concluded that “there continues to be a lack of evidence and thus low confidence regarding the sign of trend in the magnitude and/or frequency of floods on a global scale”. However, the report also highlighted that it “assesses floods in regional detail accounting for the fact that trends in floods are strongly influenced by changes in river management”.

It stated: “Although the most evident flood trends appear to be in northern high latitudes, where observed warming trends have been largest, in some regions no evidence of a trend in extreme flooding has been found”. The assessment also found that “it is likely that the frequency and intensity of drought has increased in the Mediterranean and West Africa and decreased in central North America and north-west Australia since 1950”.

I wrote a short letter to the newspaper to correct the mistakes in the article, but it refused to publish anything that indicated Ridley had made errors. It is not the first time The Times has published inaccurate statements by Ridley and censored any attempts to fix them.

Although Ridley has no qualifications in climate science (his PhD thesis was on “The Mating System of the Pheasant”), he is a member of the Academic Advisory Council of renowned climate change sceptic and former chancellor Lord Lawson's Global Warming Policy Foundation. This organisation has been labelled by the Independent as “the UK's most prominent source of climate-change denial”.

Earlier this year, the same newspaper featured another article in which he disputed any link between the flooding caused by record rainfall in the UK last winter, again citing a lack of global trend as his justification. I wrote to The Times to point out he had ignored the IPCC's findings about regional increases in flooding, but the newspaper would not agree to publish any letters that drew attention to Ridley’s mistakes.

Is it a coincidence that these articles, which clearly dispute the findings of mainstream climate science, began when John Witherow became the newspaper's editor last year? In his previous role as editor of The Sunday Times, he was implicated, as George Monbiot discovered, in a controversy over an article that severely misrepresented the views of a researcher, Dr Simon Lewis, about the impacts of climate change on the Amazon. The senior editorial team of The Sunday Times apparently used a blog by a climate change sceptic to re-write a report by its environment editor, and reportedly introduced a number of errors and distortions. Dr Lewis complained, and the newspaper was eventually forced to print a humiliating apology, although it did not address claims about the role its editors played in the fiasco.

Many of the UK's national daily newspapers now seem to be attempting to undermine their readers’ understanding of the scientific evidence on climate change. It should be no surprise then that there are still significant numbers of the public who are being misled by the UK media into wrongly believing that there is no scientific consensus about the causes and consequences of climate change.

How The Sun Caused An Aurora This Week

On the evening of Aug. 20, 2014, the International Space Station was flying past North America when it flew over the dazzling, green blue lights of an aurora. On board, astronaut Reid Wiseman captured this image of the aurora, seen from above.

This auroral display was due to a giant cloud of gas from the sun – a coronal mass ejection or CME – that collided with Earth's magnetic fields on Aug. 19, 2014, at 1:57 a.m. EDT. This event set off, as it often does, what's called a geomagnetic storm. This is a kind of space weather event where the magnetic fields surrounding Earth compress and release. This oscillation is much like a spring moving back and forth, but unlike a spring, moving magnetic fields cause an unstable environment, setting charged particles moving and initiating electric currents.

The geomagnetic storm passed within 24 hours or so but, while it was ongoing, the solar particles and magnetic fields caused the release of particles already trapped near Earth. These, in turn, triggered reactions in the upper atmosphere in which oxygen and nitrogen molecules released photons of light.

The result: an aurora, and a special sight for the astronauts on board the space station.

Apollo Minerals marks busy year, set to ramp up drilling

$
0
0
Apollo Minerals (ASX:AON) has in the last 12 months secured over $10 million in joint venture and equity financing while progressing its South Australian IOCG and African iron ore projects.

Chairman Richard Shemesian has played a key role in building shareholder value with a number of companies and looks set to repeat this with Apollo to start drilling in the two areas.

Companies which he helped transform into producers or were acquired included ASX listed Redport that was taken over by Canada’s Mega Uranium for $125million in 2006 and iron ore producer Aztec Resources which was acquired by Mount Gibson Iron (ASX:MGX) for $300 million in 2007.

*Financing*

One of the key achievements was the company entering into a $3.4 million joint venture with the Robert Friedland-controlled High Powered Exploration Inc (HPX) to find major Iron Oxide Copper Gold deposits at the Commonwealth Hill joint venture project in South Australia’s Gawler Craton.

Notably, HPX has also acquired around 10% of Apollo’s stock, its first investment in an ASX company after a review of over 1,000 projects worldwide.

As a result Eric Finlayson formerly Global Head of Rio Tinto Exploration has boosted the Apollo board’s expertise which also includes former MD of Iron Ore Holdings Ltd (IOH) Matthew Rimes.

It has also secured $4 million from major international group Zoradox Limited to fully fund exploration at the Kango North iron ore project in Gabon in return for a 50.01% interest in the project.

The company has also arranged over $3 million in equity raisings this year with strong support from its major shareholders.

*Past Activity*

Apollo activity has resulted in an unprecedented level of activity in the Gawler Craton since the 1990s.

This includes the largest induced polarisation survey ever conducted in South Australia of over 140 square kilometres using HPX’s proprietary ‘Typhoon’ technology that identified several large-scale, high priority IOCG drill targets.

HPX has also carried out test drilling at Commonwealth Hill while rotary air blast drilling and gravity surveys have been completed in the separate Mars Aurora Tank and Eaglehawk joint venture areas.

Field work has also commenced at Kango North.

*The Road Ahead*

With funding in place and previous exploration work and multiple targets identified at the SA copper/gold projects, Apollo has built the foundation for further activity in its IOCG-focused play in South Australia and the Kango North Iron Project in Gabon.

The company is about to commence gold-copper drilling at the Mars Aurora Tank JV project, which has similarities in size and style to the nearby Prominent Hill IOCG deposit about 110 kilometres to the east.

Apollo also intends to carry out drilling of major targets at the Bundi South prospect within the EagleHawk JV where Apollo is earning a 75% interest from nickel producer Mincor.

HPX is continuing work on review of the large recent Typhoon IP survey at the Commonwealth Hill JV area.

In West Africa, Apollo is preparing to start an initial $750,000 drill program to delineate a major exploration target and DSO iron at the Kango North project. Positive results from this iron ore drilling would be a bonus to shareholders.

*Analysis*

The upcoming drilling on two projects in Australia and another in West Africa will unlock the potential of Apollo Mineral’s IOCG assets in South Australia and the Kango North Iron Project in Gabon.

In addition, its joint venture with Robert Friedland’s HPX for Commonwealth Hill provides not only a partner with technical know-how, but also the financial muscle to exploit the next Prominent Hill or Carrapateena or even Olympic Dam.

Share price catalysts ahead include:

-    Mars Aurora Tank drilling results;
-    HPX review of the recent Typhoon IP survey; and
-    Kango North drilling results.

In short, success with any of these programs will make Apollo’s market cap. of circa $11.3 million look decidedly low moving forward.
