Bill Jacobs BMW of Naperville is excited to announce that 4 BMW models recently won the Edmunds' Top Rated and Most Popular Vehicle Awards for 2014. Bill Jacobs BMW is proud to be the home of Edmunds’ four most popular vehicle entries, and welcomes the public to stop in for a test drive to see what sets these vehicles apart from the competition.

The Edmunds Testing Team evaluates about 200 cars each year. Each vehicle is driven on a standardized road test loop and undergoes instrumented testing in controlled conditions. The Edmunds team uses their findings to develop ratings to grade how a car stacks up against its direct rivals in its size and price class.

Vehicles that earn an “A” rating receive an Edmunds.com Top Rated Award. The following BMW models were just announced as winners of the Edmunds Top Rated Award:

*2014 BMW 3 Series
*2014 BMW 4 Series
*2014 BMW 535d
*2013 BMW M3

Each month, Edmunds.com also evaluates new vehicle shopping activity of the users visiting their website. By measuring the unique website visitors who land on research and inventory pages on Edmunds.com for each new model on a monthly basis, they derived the Most Popular Vehicle list from the three models in each vehicle segment with the highest online car shopper consideration across the calendar year 2013.

The Most Popular Edmunds award winning Ultimate Driving Machines of 2014 include:

*The BMW 3 Series - named Edmunds.com’s Most Popular Entry Luxury Car of 2014

Celebrating Orangutan MOMs on Mother's Day

Mother's Day is the perfect day to celebrate not only human mothers -- but orangutan mothers, too.Every year on Mother's Day Orangutan Outreach teams up with zoos, wildlife sanctuaries and orangutan lovers everywhere for a global event called MOM -- Missing Orangutan Mothers. We do this in order to bring attention to the crisis facing orangutans in the wild and encourage people to help protect them. This year marks our seventh annual MOM event and we're looking forward to it being a very special day!*Why Orangutan Mothers? *Photo courtesy of Jessica McKelson for SOCP. Gober and her twins are being cared for by the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme. Gober was blind when she was rescued from certain death. At the care center she was housed next to a blind male. Several months later the staff had a surprise. Gober gave birth to twins. Following cataract surgery her sight was restored and she could see her babies for the first time.
Orangutan mothers and babies have an incredibly close relationship. In the wild, orangutans stay with their mothers until they are around seven or eight years old. Infants almost never even let go of their mothers for the first few months of their life!Baby orangutans don't have an extended family to show them the many life lessons of finding food, building nests and countless other survival skills. Instead, they rely solely on their mothers to teach them everything they need to know about survival in the forest before they eventually set out on their own.*Orangutans vs. Palm Oil*Orangutans are critically endangered in the wild. Thousands of them have been killed over the past few years because of growing international demand for something most people haven't even heard of: Palm Oil.Palm oil is in roughly half the items found on grocery store shelves. This unhealthy additive is used in foods such as cookies, crackers, chips, candies, cereals, chocolate and peanut butter, margarine, yogurt and even milk! The list is endless. Most pre-packaged food contains palm oil. In the bathroom you'll find it in your shampoo, soap, lotions, skin cream, lipstick and cosmetics. Take a look. It's everywhere. With such high demand for palm oil, the orangutans' rainforest home is being wiped out to make way for more oil palm plantations -- leaving hundreds of helpless orangutans with nowhere to go. Desperate and starving they end up as easy prey for poachers and hunters. The rain forests of Borneo and Sumatra are the only place orangutans live, and when the forests are destroyed, most orangutans do not survive. These peaceful, sentient beings are beaten, burned, mutilated, tortured and often eaten. Adult males are shot on site. Babies are literally torn off their dying mothers so they can be sold on the black market as illegal pets. This has been documented time and again.Large-scale deforestation is also a leading cause of carbon emissions and a major contributor to global warming. When the peat forests of Indonesia are burned they release so much carbon into the atmosphere that Indonesia now ranks third behind only China and the US in carbon emissions. If you're looking for a sensible way to reduce global warming and help mitigate the effects of climate change, the answer is simple: Save the orangutans' forests.Photo courtesy of Annie Musselman. Orphaned baby orangutans being taken to Forest School at BOS Nyaru Menteng. The center cares for approximately 600 orphaned and displaced orangutans.
The orangutans who are lucky enough to survive the destruction of their forest are rescued and brought to special care centers where they are looked after by trained, professional vets and staff until they can be released back into the wild. Orangutan Outreach supports several major rescue centers that are managed by our partners: the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOS), International Animal Rescue (IAR) and the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP). Together the centers look after upwards of 1,000 orphaned and displaced orangutans!

MOM -- Missing Orangutan Mothers is a positive way for orangutans in zoos and sanctuaries to be ambassadors for their wild cousins. With tens of thousands of visitors on Mothers Day, this is a perfect teachable moment for conservation and environmental awareness.Every year we choose a special orangutan mom & baby to be the face of the event. This year's MOM banner features a new mother named Astrid and her beautiful baby boy, Astro.Since summer 2012 the team at BOS Nyaru Menteng -- the world's largest primate rescue & rehabilitation center -- has been accomplishing something truly amazing. They've successfully released more than 100 rehabilitated orangutans into a safe forest in the Heart of Borneo. These orangutans -- all of whom were raised by human caregivers -- are not only surviving... they're thriving! How do we know this? A year after the first group was released, the post-release monitoring team had a wonderful surprise. They spotted Astrid one day and she was not alone. Holding onto her with an iron grip was a little orange bundle of joy! Astro is the first wild baby orangutan born to rehabilitated parents. When he grows up he will be the King of the Jungle.Photo courtesy of BOSF for Orangutan Outreach. Baby Cinta (Indonesian for 'love') is being cared for at BOS Nyaru Menteng where she is one of the youngest orangutans in Baby School.
This Mother's Day we ask you to please take a moment to remember all the orphaned baby orangutans who are missing the love and tenderness of their mothers. Together with our dedicated partners, we're doing the best we can for them, but we need YOUR help! To learn more and help the orangutans please visit the Orangutan Outreach website. How can you help? Learn about the crisis facing orangutans. Visit your local zoo and say hello to the orangutans. Adopt a baby for your own MOM. Orangutan adoptions make great gifts! Make a donation, large or small. Court Error Gets Man Out of Jail 90 Years Early; Error Discovered, Reformed Man Sent Back to Prison
Man Has to Spend 90 More Years in Prison After Discovery of Clerical Error
Has Been Optimized

AURORA, Colo. – A clerical error led to a man’s release from jail 90 years before his term was up. It wasn’t until nearly six years later that Colorado authorities discovered the error and sent the man, who had turned his life around and was now a married father, back to prison to serve out the remainder of his 98-year sentence.

Rene Lima-Marin was 20 years old in 2000 when he and Michael Clifton were convicted on multiple robbery, kidnapping and burglary charges for a pair of violent robberies of Aurora video stores.

In one of the assaults, the two men ordered employees into a backroom at gunpoint, forced one employee to the floor and demanded money from a safe.

Both Lima-Marin and Clifton were sentenced on eight convictions, which they were to serve consecutively over a total of 98 years.

A court clerk, however, mistakenly recorded in the file that the eight convictions were to be served at the same time.

In 2008, when Lima-Marin had served out the length of one eight-year conviction, he was released from prison on parole.

Notably, Clifton had previously filed an appeal in his case, which led to the discovery of the error in his file. The sentence was adjusted to reflect the 98-year prison term that had initially been intended to be; thus, in 2008, Clifton was not released from prison, as Lima-Marin was.

Lima-Marin filed an appeal of his own in 2000, but, in a highly unusual move, asked that his appeal be dismissed less than a year later. Prosecutors are now pointing to his dismissal request as evidence that Lima-Marin was aware of the clerical error before his release, and that he attempted to prevent drawing attention to the error.

Newly released from prison, Lima-Marin set about rebuilding his life.

The now 35-year-old man became skilled at cutting and installing windows; he became involved in church, and was helping coach soccer. He reconnected with his former girlfriend, Jasmine Lima-Marin. The couple was married in July, a date that also marked the completion of five years of parole.

The couple was raising Jasmine’s 7-year-old son, Justus, and had a son of their own, Josiah, who is now 4.

Lima-Marin, however, was notably absent from Josiah’s birthday party: he was back in jail.

A former prosecutor who had handled Lima-Marin’s case noticed the clerical error that had led to Lima-Marin’s early release, and notified Arapahoe County senior deputy district attorney Rich Orman in January.

A judge agreed to Orman’s motion to send Lima-Marin back to prison.

Orman noted that Lima-Marin had committed “a number of very serious criminal offenses,” and stated that he “should not be able to escape the minimum sentence due to a clerical error.”

As Jasmine said, “He was given an opportunity to live again and it was taken away from him.”

Unfortunately for the largely reformed man, good behavior outside of prison is not taken into consideration in cases involving people who were improperly released from prison due to human error.

In April, Lima-Marin’s public defender requested that Lima-Marin be released. Noting that Lima Marin had remained silent about his early release, however, a judge turned down the request.

He now faces nine more decades in jail; his wife and children face nine more decades of living without their husband and father. Jasmine, who has said that his clean life after prison shows that he has already been sufficiently punished, is considering another appeal and has already reached out to an attorney.

“That was his life, raising his kids and being a husband,” Jasmine said. “He definitely was not the same person that he was when he went in to prison.”

Shocks Shown To Induce And Improve Lucid Dreaming

*Brett Smith for redOrbit.com - Your Universe Online*

Although dreaming takes place entirely within the mind, dreamers often feel like they are living in a reality in which they have no control. However, some dreamers can reach a state in which they are aware they are dreaming and can take control of the dream – a phenomenon called lucid dreaming.

While some people try to train themselves into becoming lucid dreamers, a new study in the journal Nature Neuroscience has found dreamers given a sustained electrical jolt of around 40 Hertz can become lucid 77 percent of the time. The neuroscientists said their results provide a new window into the very foundation of consciousness.

In the study, 27 healthy participants who said they never had lucid dreams slept as individuals in a sleep lab on multiple occasions. Two minutes after achieving REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, when dreaming takes place, the participants were given either a weak electrical current, between 2 and100 Hertz, to the frontal lobe for 30 seconds, or a fake current with no electricity.

The researchers found that a 40-Hz current often caused participants’ brains to generate brain waves of the same frequency and trigger lucidity 77 percent of the time, as established by later reports from the dreamers. Electrical charges of 25 Hertz also sparked lucidity – 58 percent of the time. In comparison, subjects who were given fake or low-frequency charges never became lucid.

Study author Ursula Voss, a clinical psychologist at Frankfurt University in Germany, said one of the most important aspects of the new study is the glimpse it provides into the human condition.

"Being able to reflect upon yourself, to think about your past and plan your future—this is something that only we humans can do,” Voss told Virginia Hughes of National Geographic.

Tore Nielsen, a dream researcher at the University of Montreal who was not involved in the study, told Hughes that the findings could have implications for treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). If a person is having a nightmare about their traumatic experience, Nielsen said, they could be given a 40-Hz jolt allowing them to take control of their dream and potentially alleviate stress from it.

"That would be remarkable," Nielsen said.

He said he wouldn’t be surprised to see an entire industry of devices crop up in the near future based on this new study.

People are going to be scrambling to put together home lucid dreaming induction devices based on this 40-Hertz stimulation procedure," he said. "I wouldn't be surprised if we see products fairly quickly."

In fact, a crowd funding program for a lucid dreaming headband called the Aurora met its goal of $90,000 on January 21. Instead of providing a brain-stimulating electric shock – the device is said to play “lights and sounds for lucid dreaming with a smart alarm clock to help you sleep better.”

“Research shows that those who lucid dream regularly experience fewer nightmares and lower levels of stress and anxiety,” an article on the campaign website claimed. “The Aurora can help you nail that upcoming presentation, hit the game-winning shot or ask your future spouse out on your first date We spend one third of our lives asleep. Why not make the most of that time?” Reported by redOrbit 13 hours ago.

Apollo Minerals pinpoints potential IOCG drill target in Gawler Craton

$
0
0
Apollo Minerals (ASX: AON) has identified a large-scale, Prominent Hill style IOCG target at the Mars Aurora Tank Prospect at the Titan Project in South Australia’s Gawler Craton - providing a boost to the share price.

The age of the rocks appear to be similar as the primary source for IOCG mineralisation within the Gawler Craton and particularly the Olympic IOCG domain.

The new high priority target was identified from a recently completed ground gravity survey and recently acquired historic high resolution airborne magnetic and radiometric data.

Apollo is earning up to a 75% interest in the Mars Aurora Tank prospect located in the north-western corner of the Titan project area.

A near-surface rotary air blast drilling and geochemical sampling program across the area has been recently completed and the company is looking forward to receipt of the drilling geochem assays.

A reconnaissance Induced Polarisation program has also been completed and the processing and analysis of the IP survey data, in conjunction with the new geochemical data and the gravity and magnetic results, is expected to define IOCG drill targets.

*Target Details*

The new IOCG target is situated immediately west of shallow, historic drilling which returned a large number of anomalous IOCG intersections, within and along strike of a discrete magnetic body.

Results of this shallow drilling include grades of up to 52% iron, 700ppm copper, 2 grams per tonne gold, and 4g/t silver over four-metre down-hole composite widths.

The target is interpreted to represent structurally controlled zones of high density material immediately west of the previously targeted high intensity magnetic zone.

The geophysical expressions are consistent with a spation separation between hematite dominant IOCG style alteration (dense but non-magnetic) and a primary magnetite dominant zone.

Notably, the geophysical responses have a very similar shape to those observed at the nearby Prominent Hill IOCG deposit.

Recently acquired high resolution airborne magnetic; and radiometric and gravity data also highlights a distinct zone of uranium enrichment along the south-eastern and south-western margins of the high priority IOCG target area.

These zones are coincident with large and discrete gravity lows and are within an area where an age date of 1584Ma was collected from heavily weathered outcrop identified by Apollo in late 2013.

It is believed that this area may represent a large, late stage Hiltaba granitic intrusion and related Gawler Range Volcanics, each of which may be important in the concentration of economic copper and gold mineralisation.

*Titan Project
*
Apollo had last month kicked off its largest exploration program yet to find IOCG targets across joint venture areas – including Mars Aurora Tank - associated with its Titan Project in the Gawler Craton.

Previous work at the project has identified outcropping ironstone, drill intersections of iron, gold, silver and copper, indications of volcanics, fault-related brecciation.

Hiltaba-equivalent age dates at circa 1584Ma have also been identified - these are also found at Prominent Hill and other key IOCG deposits in South Australia.

Apollo is party to an exploration farm-in agreement with Marmota Energy (ASX: MEU) on Marmota’s 48 square kilometre tenement EL4433 (Aurora Tank), situated immediately north of Apollo’s Mars Prospect on its 100% owned Commonwealth Hill tenements.

Under terms of the Agreement, Apollo may earn 75% of the mineral rights at Aurora Tank through exploration expenditure totalling the greater of:
- $900k over a period of up to 3 years, or
- the costs incurred to Bankable Feasibility Study Stage.

*Analysis*

The discovery of a large-scale, Prominent Hill style IOCG target provides a strong platform for a drill program at the Mars Aurora Tank Prospect at the Titan Project in South Australia’s Gawler Craton.
