Teen Charged With Putting Hidden Camera in Neighbors' Bedroom Patch Montgomery, IL --

A teen faces charges in connection to a hidden camera found in his neighbors' bedroom, North Aurora police announced Wednesday.

The teen is 16 years old, male and lives in the 1100 block of Oak Crest Drive in North Aurora, according to police. The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office authorized the following charges against the juvenile suspect:

· One count of unauthorized video recording
· One count of disorderly conduct

The charges are Class A misdemeanors. The suspect is being prosecuted as a juvenile, so his name will not be released, a North Aurora police statement said.

Police presented their case to the State's Attorney's Office after they completed their investigation into the incident, which was first reported on Nov. 17, 2012. At about 2:10 p.m. that day, officers were dispatched to the 700 block of Oak Crest Drive for a report of homeowners finding surveillance equipment in their house.

"While cleaning a bedroom, the homeowners found a small video camera underneath some furniture," the statement said. "Further research revealed the camera was a wireless transmitter camera with a maximum range of 300 ft."

Investigators determined the homeowners’ 16-year-old male neighbor unlawfully placed the camera in a bedroom of their home while he was babysitting their kids. Police obtained and executed a search warrant at the suspect’s home and seized computers, cables and storage devices.

"Police personnel have determined the camera would not transmit out of the room it was placed in, so we do not believe that the suspect was ever able to view images from the camera," the statement said.

In addition, a forensic computer examiner from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office searched all of the storage devices seized from the suspect’s home and was unable to locate any image from the hidden camera while it was in the homeowners’ bedroom.

The teenage suspect surrendered to the North Aurora Police Department on Feb. 8. He was processed per standard procedures and released, police said.

The police investigation into this incident is now closed, but the case has just entered the juvenile court system. An update on the status of this case was not immediately available Wednesday.

Aurora, Ill.'s Murder-Free Year Shows What Chicago Is Doing Wrong

$

Aurora, Ill.'s Murder-Free Year Shows What Chicago Is Doing Wrong Chicago ended 2012 with 506 murders, earning the city the title of America's murder capital, DNAinfo.com Chicago reported in January.

By contrast, Aurora, Ill., the state's second-largest city, recorded absolutely no murders last year, Bloomberg reported Thursday.

Why the difference?

It's all in the way police approach the community.

"Aurora saw its factories shrivel and its street gangs thrive until the past five years, when its police methodically smothered the criminals by partnering with neighborhood groups as well as state and federal law enforcement," Bloomberg reported. "The agencies drew from the playbook used to get the Chicago crime icon Al Capone — attacking the enterprise, not just the violence it spawns."

Aurora recorded 25 murders per 100,000 people in 2003 and 17 murders per 100,000 people in 2004, according City-Data.com. But the numbers have been steadily declining.

However, Chicago is moving in the opposite direction.

The city is chopping the nearly-$4.6 million community policing budget down to zero, according to the city's 2013 budget plan.

That budget move could prove a deadly mistake for Chicago.

Just look at Aurora, where residents say without a doubt the community policing measures have made their city safer and increased their trust in the police department.

“I see cops on the corner and I think they’re doing a really good job,” long-time Aurora resident Myra Portillo told Bloomberg. “I feel safer most of the time.”

Apollo Minerals snaps up gold/iron tenements in the Gawlor Graton

$
0
0
Apollo Minerals (ASX: AON) has agreed on exploration farm-in terms with *Marmota Energy (ASX: MEU)* to acquire a tenement with historic gold/iron intercepts in the highly prospective Gawler Craton of South Australia.

The agreement relates to Marmota’s 48 square kilometre Aurora Tank tenement EL4433, which is located immediately north of Apollo’s Ibis and Mars Prospects.

Dominic Tisdell, chief operating officer and executive director for Apollo, told Proactive Investors today that he considers Aurora Tank to be as equally prospective as the Ibis and Mars prospects.

*Historic highlights* from the Mars / Aurora Tank Prospect include precious metal intersections such as:

- 4 metres at 2.0 g/t gold from 112 metres;
- 4 metres at 1.3 g/t gold from 24 metres;
- 4 metres at 1.2 g/t gold from 56 metres; and
- 20 metres at 0.5 g/t gold from 116 metres, including 4 metres at 1.6g/t gold.

Adding further interest are near surface historic iron intersections, such as:

- 84 metres at 29.8% iron from 12 metres; and
- 60 metres at 28.3% iron from 24 metres, including 28 metres at 35.0% iron.

Importantly for Apollo, the Aurora Tank tenement is a natural fit and further enhances the company's portfolio and position in the region.

This is particularly true for Apollo’s Commonwealth Hill Iron as well as the Titan Base and Precious Metals projects that are located within an exceptionally prospective part of the Gawler Craton and are adjacent to Aurora Tank.

Apollo's tenements are around 100 kilometres from *Oz Minerals' (ASX: OZL)* Prominent Hill, and around 200 kilometres from *BHP Billiton's (ASX: BHP)* Olympic Dam - and is surrounded by other operating mines and deposits.

Another advantage is the supporting nearby infrastructure, which includes the Trans-Australian Railway - which provides access to ports.

The company’s footprint now covers over 1,400 square kilometres of the highly prospective northern Gawler Craton encompassing a number of regional scale structures, geophysical and geochemical anomalies including iron ore, copper, nickel and gold.

Apollo is actively progressing exploration and development through its Commonwealth Hill Iron and Titan Base-Precious Metals Projects.

*Aurora Tank deal and background*

Under the agreement, Apollo may earn a 75% interest in Aurora Tank by sole funding the greater of either a minimum of $900,000 of exploration and development activities over a period of up to three years, or all exploration and development costs to the Bankable Feasibility Study stage.

Apollo has committed to a minimum exploration spend of $150,000 on EL4433 during the first year of the farm-in with Marmota.

At the combined Mars-Aurora Tank Prospect, key target zones include a dominant, shallow northeast trending magnetic anomaly which is likely to host significant magnetite mineralisation, and its eastern margin which is defined by a 1,700m long zone of anomalous gold in calcrete.

Historic drill holes RCAT8 and RCAT13 intersected significant gold mineralisation at the end of their respective traverses and Apollo believes this mineralisation remains open in all directions.

The company’s review of the existing data confirms that the Mars-Aurora Tank Prospect shares similar characteristics to the near-by Challenger Gold Mine which is hosted within Archaean units of the Mulgathing Complex.

A strong magnetic feature extends from Apollo’s Mars Prospect into Aurora Tank. This trends north-northeast for a strike length of over 6 kilometres.

*Commonwealth Hill*

Both Ibis and Mars are part of the Commonwealth Hill project, which contains a number of deposits.

Apollo had earlier this week reached a farm-in agreement to acquire up to 75% over the 624 square kilometre EL4932 from Mincor Resources (ASX: MCR).

Last quarter, Apollo completed the Scoping Study for the Sequoia iron ore deposit at the Commonwealth Hill project in South Australia that demonstrated the potential to support a 17 year mine life at 2.5 million tonnes per annum sales.

The open cut mine life of about 17 years has a projected output of about 2.5 million tonnes per annum, with sales of 42 million tonnes at 68.8% iron at an exceptionally coarse sizing of around P80 150 microns.

Ibis has yet to be drilled by Apollo and has an exploration target of between 200 million and 400 million tonnes at 25% to 35% iron.

*Analysis*

Today’s deal with Marmota Energy further consolidates Apollo’s position in the highly prospective Gawler Craton, home to world-class operations such as Olympic Dam and Prominent Hill.

The farm-in to the "brownfield" project is significant given the encouraging historical gold and iron intersections. The iron intersections were broad while the gold grades would provide promise for an exploration program.

Oswego Playhouse presents “Eleemosynary”

Patch Oswego, IL --

*Editor's Note: The following is a press release issued by the Village of Oswego:*

Spelling bees have been a form of entertainment for a long time in the United States. They first became popular in the 1800’s and continue in popularity today with the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

A spelling bee is at the heart of Oswego Playhouse’s production of Eleemosynary.  Eleemosynary means charitable acts. The play by Lee Blessing revolves around the everyday charitable acts of love and forgiveness that we express to each other in our relationships.

Eleemosynary opens on Friday Feb 22 at 8 pm and continues February 23 and March 1 and 2. There will be one Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. on March 3rd. All performances will be at Oswego Village Hall. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased at the Village Hall. Reservations may be made by calling 630.554.3287.

Oswego Playhouse has added two additional performances of Eleemosynary on Friday, March 8 and Saturday, March 9 at 8 p.m. Proceeds from the two additional performances will go to Kendall County CASA.

Eleemosynary features Jacquie Weirich (Oswego) as Dorothea, Beth Goncher (Aurora) as Artie and Kelly Cash (Aurora) as Echo and is directed by Jill Orr.  The play probes into the delicate relationship of three women: the grandmother, Dorothea, who has sought to assert her independence through strong-willed eccentricity; her brilliant daughter, Artie (Artemis), who has fled the stifling domination of her mother; and Artie's daughter, Echo, a child of exceptional intellect-and sensitivity-whom Artie has abandoned to an upbringing by Dorothea.

As the play begins, Dorothea has suffered a stroke and Echo has reestablished contact with her mother through extended telephone conversations. Their conversations ignore the real issues that Artie and Echo need to face and focus on Echo's single-minded domination of a national spelling contest. After Dorothea's death, both Artie and Echo accept their mutual need and summon the courage to build a life together.

Community groups will be participating in a spelling bee each night prior to the performance and the evening’s winner will be determined and crowned champion during intermission. Reported by Patch 18 hours ago.

Montgomery Sam's Club Proposal Nearing a Vote Patch Montgomery, IL --

Montgomery could be home to a Sam’s Club warehouse store as early as next fall if the Village Board approves the development at its next meeting.

The store will be located on the western edge of the Ogden Hill retail development that also houses JC Penny and Menards, according to village documents. The village’s Plan Commission approved several variance recommendations this week.

The Village Board’s Committee of the Whole will hear those plans and their variances at its meeting set for Tuesday.  The development is likely to come before the Village Board for a vote Feb. 25.

Plans for the store also include a tire center and gas station. The store is projected to bring in as much as $750,000 per year in sales tax to the village, and will mean about 170 new jobs, according to acting Village Manager Jeff Zoephel.

Zoephel also said the village is in negotiations with Sam’s regarding an economic incentive package that could involve sales tax rebates back to the company.

“Nothing has been decided on that yet,” Zoephel said.

Charlene Coulombe-Fiore, executive director of the Montgomery Economic Development Corp., called the proposal a big win for the entire area, including several other local taxing bodies that will benefit from additional tax dollars.

“This has been in the works for over a year,” Coulombe-Fiore said. “I know that Aurora, North Aurora and Oswego all were going after this development. I’m glad they are coming here.” Reported by Patch 26 minutes ago.

No One Hurt in Night-Time Hazmat Call at Power Packaging in Geneva

No One Hurt in Night-Time Hazmat Call at Power Packaging in Geneva Patch Batavia, IL --

Nine area Hazmat units responded late Thursday night to an unexpected Valentine's Day chemical reaction at Power Packaging, a food and beverage packaging plant at 2089 Pillsbury Drive in Geneva.

Geneva Fire Department Chief Steve Olson said Friday that Hazmat units were called in after nitric acid inadvertently was combined with an organic solvent.

"They don’t get along very well," Olson said.

Nitric acid is a strong acid and a powerful oxidizing agent and can be explosive when mixed with many organic compounds, such as turpentine, according to Wikipedia.

Olson said a technician disposed one chemical into a waste container, "and the result was a chemical reaction. We removed the cabinet and rendered it harmless out there."

Asked if the two elements could have ignited a fire, Olson said "if you get enough together, yes, but this never got to that point."

Because that part of Geneva is zoned industrial, the nearest residence most likely was a home at Averill and Kautz Road, Olson said. No vapors escaped, Olson said, so no adjoining property owners or employees were threatened at any time.

"There just wasn’t anything to vent. It was a small enough reaction that was manageable by the steps we took," Olson said. "It was a good outcome, and the company had a mediation firm on-site before we were done."

A call to Power Packaging was not immediately returned Friday afternoon.

The call was reported on Chicagofiremap.net at 11:55 p.m. and was characterized as a "Hazmat box/acid leak."

Departments from Geneva, Batavia, St. Charles, Aurora, Elburn, North Aurora, Montgomery and others responded to the mutual aid call. Units were at the scene for about five hours.

Olson said nine fire departments and five hours of cleanup are not at all out of the ordinary in a Hazmat situation.

"Any kind of chemical materials (involvement) takes a long time. We need to first understand what it is, so there’s a lot of pre-set-up and research," he said. "Whenever you get to this level of an incident, it requires more resources than most departments have available." Reported by Patch 8 hours ago.

The suspect also took an unknown quantity of lottery scratch-off tickets and several cartons of cigarettes before he left the store. He was last seen heading westbound from the store.

Colorado Passes Four Bold Gun Control Measures

$
0
0
DENVER -- A package of gun control measures won initial approval in Colorado's Democratic-controlled House Friday night, with Vice President Joe Biden personally phoning four lawmakers from his ski vacation in the state to speed along the emotional debate.

Biden phoned three freshmen legislators along with Democratic House Speaker Mark Ferrandino. The calls came amid a long debate over the proposals, including expanded background checks and ammunition limits – responses to mass shootings, including the killings at a Colorado movie theater.

In all, the House gave the initial OK to four bills after a daylong debate. The preliminary votes set up final actions on the measures Monday.

The Democratic gun-control package that advanced also includes banning concealed weapons on public college campuses, and requiring that gun buyers pay for their background checks.

One of the freshmen Biden called, Democratic Rep. Tony Exum, hails from conservative Colorado Springs and said he had no idea who would be on the line when a "restricted" number rang his cellphone during afternoon debate.

"He said, `This is Vice President Joe Biden.' I said, `No way!'" Exum recalled with a chuckle after the call.

Exum said that Biden repeatedly called him "chief," a reference to Exum's former service as a fire chief. Exum said Friday night that his mind was already made up to support the gun-control measures, but Biden asked about the package's prospects. Exum said prospects were good and that he was happy to hear from the vice president on Colorado's gun debate.

Biden also talked to Democratic Rep. Mike McLachlan, whose southwest Colorado district includes more Republicans than Democrats.

The vice president also called Democratic Rep. Dominick Moreno, a lawmaker from suburban Denver.

"We just had a brief conversation about what we're doing today and emphasized the importance of Colorado's role in shaping national policy around this issue," he said. Asked what he thought Biden meant, Moreno said, "Well, I can only speculate, but I think mostly because Colorado is such a politically moderate state."

Biden left a message for Ferrandino but didn't speak to him.

The vice president was in Snowmass, just outside Aspen, for a holiday weekend skiing trip with his granddaughters.

Colorado's votes capping magazine sizes and expanding required background checks to private sales came amid 12 hours of debate. The votes were preliminary and unrecorded, but they were the first chance for many lawmakers to debate gun control after mass shootings last year in Aurora, Colo., and Newtown, Conn.

"These high-capacity weapons have no place outside the fields of war," said Rep. Rhonda Fields, an Aurora Democrat who sponsored the ammunition bill, which limits magazines to 15 rounds, with a more restrictive eight-round limit for shotguns. The bill makes an exception for magazines that people already have in their possession.

Republicans spent hours arguing that the limit violates Second Amendment rights. They also cited a Colorado gun manufacturer that has threatened to leave Colorado if the measure becomes law. The bill was amended to exempt that company, but Republicans still argued against the measure.

"We are not safer by limiting the constitutional rights of law-abiding firearm owners," said Republican Rep. Frank McNulty.

A few Democrats appeared to agree Friday, though an exact vote count won't be known until recorded votes are taken Monday. GOP leaders were hoping gun activists would spend the weekend pressuring rural Democrats like Rep. Ed Vigil of southern Colorado, the only Democrat who argued Friday against any ammunition limit.

"We should be going down the path of making mental health available to people who really need it," Vigil argued.

The gun debate was at times emotional and pointed. One gun lobbyist was asked to leave the Capitol after a heated exchange off the floor with a Republican lawmaker who said the lobbyist was falsely accusing her of considering voting for the gun-control measures. The gallery was at times packed with gun-rights activists.

Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper has said favors some of the gun-control measures. Hickenlooper supports expanded background checks and indicated Thursday that he could support a potential amendment on magazine sizes, if the restriction was between 15 and 20 rounds.

He also said he thinks gun purchasers should pay for their background checks, but he had not made up his mind yet about the ban on concealed firearms on colleges.

All of the proposals still need to be considered by Democrat-controlled Senate.

Democrats in the Legislature said the time is right to limit gun access and magazine sizes to prevent more shootings.

"This is about kids who have been shot, over and over and over again," said Democratic Rep. Crisanta Duran said. "I am tired of seeing kids die, year after year, after year, after year."
