Seattle could be in for a great show of the Northern Lights this Friday and Saturday nights, with the expected arrival of a strong solar flare that erupted Wednesday. The Northern Lights, or aurora borealis, happen when energy-charged particles from a solar storm collide with atoms in Earth’s high-altitude atmosphere. That collision produces the characteristic green shimmer of an aurora borealis in polar latitudes. They sometime also have hints of red and blue. This weekend, the best places to see the light show are in Pacific Northwest, Canada and northern New England.
