McDonald’s, KFC and Pizza Hut restaurants in China stopped selling meat supplied by Husi Food Co. Ltd. after the China Food and Drug Administration reported it sold expired beef and chicken products.

The CFDA is investigating Husi, which is owned by OSI Group of Aurora, Illinois. Officials believe the supplier was knowingly selling expired meat which it relabeled with new expiration dates, the New York Daily News reported.

"At present, the company has been sealed and suspect products seized," the CFDA said on its website.

McDonald's sealed 4,500 cases of beef, pork, chicken and other products and Pizza Hut sealed 500 cases of seasoned beef supplied by Husi for investigation. CFDA investigators are working with police, Shanghai television station Dragon TV reported.

McDonald's Corp. and Yum Brands Inc., which owns KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell, are conducting their own investigations.

"Food safety is a top priority for McDonald's," the company said on its microblog. The company cited "strict compliance" with consumer safety laws and regulations and says it has "zero tolerance for illegal behavior."

KFC, China’s biggest restaurant chain, saw a 37 percent drop in sales last December after poultry suppliers were cited for violating rules against drug use in chickens.

Although many fast food restaurant were empty during peak hours on Monday, some diners say the recent spate of food scares hasn’t frightened them away from fast food.

"The incident won't change me eating here," 24-year-old Liu Kun said. "There have been negative reports all the time. McDonald and KFC are the leaders in the industry."

"My boyfriend called and told me not to eat McDonald's one minute after I ordered this chicken burger, but what can I do? I've already ordered and I am in a hurry," said 24-year-old Chen Lu.
