Aurora, CO (PRWEB) July 08, 2014

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) has recently called for more advance practice nurses to hold doctorate level degrees, doubling the number of nurses with doctorates by 2015, and American Sentinel University has responded by opening up a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Fall 2014 Cohort.

American Sentinel’s ACEN-accredited DNP programs offer specialty tracks in executive and educational leadership to prepare today’s modern nurses with leadership skills in administration and academic settings.

“Nurses have devoted their careers to making a difference in the lives of their patients and our online DNP programs let them build on their knowledge and expertise to strengthen their nursing practice, improve patient outcomes, elevate the level of patient care, lead industry change and position themselves for advancement in their field of specialty,” says Cheryl Wagner, Ph.D., MSN/MBA, RN, associate dean of graduate nursing programs at American Sentinel University.

American Sentinel’s DNP fall cohort will begin on Oct. 20, 2014. Class size is limited to just 25 students and the required class residency takes place Oct. 25 – Nov.1, 2014 in Aurora, Colo. The deadline to apply for the fall cohort is August 25.

“Education makes a difference in the ability of nurses to practice and nurses with doctoral degrees will be in high demand in the coming years,” says Dr. Wagner. “Our DNP programs are designed for nurse leaders seeking practice-focused degrees. Since the launch of our first DNP program in 2010, we have empowered nurses to gain the credibility, management skills and industry knowledge they need to move up the career ladder and play an important role in the healthcare transformation.”

Nurse Executives with Practical Leadership Skills
American Sentinel’s two-year DNP Executive Leadership program enables Master's-prepared nurses to practice within a complex, highly computerized health system to gain a doctoral degree in nursing leadership.

“The DNP Executive Leadership program offers nurse executives doctorates in practice-based fields as an alternative to Ph.D.s, both within and outside of healthcare,” says Dr. Wagner. “Busy nurse executives find our program fulfilling and enjoyable. It’s perfect for executive nurses who want to specialize in practical leadership skills and demonstrates their value to their organizations and the healthcare marketplace.”

The program features a flexible online format, eight-week-long courses, a week break between courses, and just two 7-day residencies.

Meeting Demands for More Deans and Directors of Nursing
The DNP Educational Leadership program was designed to be practice-based and leadership-focused preparing faculty, program directors and deans to lead nursing education programs. Traditional doctorial programs are often research-based or general education focused. American Sentinel’s DNP program provides nurse education leaders a unique set of skills intended for the classroom and for advancing in the educational field.

American Sentinel’s doctorate in nursing education develops the six key competencies that vary greatly from those taught in traditional Ph.D. or Ed.D. programs and are the most needed by today’s nursing education leaders: leadership, finance and fund development, new models of curriculum development and delivery, strategic planning, education policy, education research and accreditation training.

“The roles of nursing deans and education directors have expanded significantly over the last several years and our DNP gives leaders the tools they need in order to be effective in transforming nursing education,” says Dr. Wagner. “The most successful way to create strong educational leadership is to develop nurses to become better educators by mentoring them at a high level.”

American Sentinel will hold a DNP Online Open House on Tues., July 8 at 1 p.m. EST.
