The New York Times racked up the most nominations for the annual Online Journalism Awards on Monday, scoring eight from the Online News Association.

The Times was a finalist in nearly every category for which it was eligible. Pulitzer-prize winning “Snowfall” was among them, as was its coverage of the 2012 presidential election and Hurricane Sandy.

On the techier side of things, the Times-sponsored open-source Javascript library D3.js was one of the finalists for Technical Innovation in the Service of Digital Journalism.

The ONA singled out journalistic heavy-hitters and small student start-ups for praise. The winners will be named on October 19 at ONA’s annual awards banquet.

Public radio stations also did well: NPR was nominated for General Excellence in Online Journalism and for its presidential election coverage, while stations such as WNYC, Boston’s WBUR and KPCC received nods. As TheWrap previously reported, KPCC has increased its focus on digital journalism in recent years. That push could pay off in the form of an OJA.

The L.A. Times was a finalist in four categories, including Watchdog Journalism, Innovative Investigative Journalism, Topical Reporting and Explanatory Reporting.
