Sins of the Father: 'Truth Like the Sun' Reviewed

$

At first glance, Jim Lynch's latest novel, Truth Like the Sun, is another political thriller that pits a ruthless reporter against a tight-lipped, golden-boy politician. Set in Seattle, the plot is reminiscent of the BBC miniseries State of Play, this time following newspaper reporter Helen Gulanos as she investigates golden-boy politician Roger Morgan Dawkins, the (fictional) mastermind behind bringing the 1962 World's Fair to Seattle. Impossible idealizations run amok in the novel; the city's precious reputation as the most livable city, most literate city, and most educated city, and Roger's own as the "father of Seattle." Though the story proves to be formulaic, fortunately, the novel works better as a parable about resisting black and white extremes and the ties that bind fathers and sons. Here, Lynch uses Morgan and the city's darling reputation to show that things are never black and white, and that the truth, per usual, is always a bit more grey.

Lynch wastes little time defacing the Emerald City, beginning by paying homage to the city's other notorious title--the most suicidal city--introducing Helen Gulanos as she responds to a report about a suicide jumper on the Aurora Bridge. Gulanos, a newcomer to Seattle and writer for the floundering Seattle Post-Intelligencer, is unaware of the bridge's number of attempted suicides since opening in 1932 and is appalled when a driver, frustrated at the traffic jam, yells "Just jump, bitch!" Whether the woman hears the taunt or not, she leaps off the bridge and leads Gulanos to muse that the city's reputation belies it true grit: "And even the city turned out to be a two-faced tease..."

Although Gulanos constitutes the bulk of the novel, the story is as much Roger's as it is Gulanos's. Indeed, the most interesting character in the novel is the specter threatening Roger's candidacy: his father. The senior Dawkins, as Roger--and the reader--learn, was a gambling addict who left his wife and son for Vegas, and it's this lack that drives Roger's past and limits his future. Though Roger drops the Dawkins from his name at age eighteen, he is only able to sever ties legally but not emotionally.

As the whiz kid responsible for bringing Seattle into the world's limelight, Roger spends his days entertaining Elvis and listening to Lyndon B. Johnson. At night, however, he retraces his father's footsteps into Seattle's thriving gambling underground, playing cards in hidden backrooms and asking around for Bobby Dawkins, claiming he's a distant relative. As Roger continues his search, he repeats the sins of the father (lowercase f--my Freud is rusty), becoming more entangled with the city's racketeers, corrupt police department, and grafters. By the time he declares his candidacy nearly four decades later, the father and son similarities extend beyond just a penchant for gambling.

Like Dawkins, Roger too is an absentee father. Though he has three children, Roger is never seen with them or gives any indication he is involved in their lives, physically at best and financially at worst, as Gulanos learns the candidate is broke. What's more, as the anointed father of Seattle, Roger's pattern of absenteeism is deepened, as he abandons the city shortly after the World's Fair ends, staying away for some time to travel to Spain, the Amazon, and more. After being away, he returns and declares his candidacy for mayor, surprising even his closest friends. When asked during a mayoral debate why he returned after being away so long, he paternally explains, "to help this city live up to its potential."

That the novel is about fathers and sons is unmistakable. Although single-mother Gulanos is often more concerned with her career than her son Elias, with many reviewers noting the scene where she eats the last egg and leaves only dry cereal for her son, he too is concerned about his lack of a father. On her way to interview an elderly man who has dirt on Roger and driving 100mph in her beat up sedan, her son suddenly asks, "Why don't I have a father?" and wonders if he should try to find him, eerily echoing Roger Morgan's own lifelong quest(ion).

Ultimately, the novel's strength resides in its depictions of characters whose ethics and motivations occupy a liminal, grey space between good and bad, moral and immoral. Roger Morgan is no more a corrupt politician than a man whose idealism blinded him from the greed he promoted. Helen Gulanos too is a no more an unfit mother than a woman caught up in the sexist discourse about whether women can truly "have it all," balancing her career with family.

This grey space also speaks both to Seattle's rainy reputation and its true character. Though Seattle may have been atop of many the most lists over the years, which utilize vague criteria and produce dubious titles, as a native Seattleite, I suggest that the truth is somewhere in the middle. Despite the city's impossibly stunning views, the city is far from utopia, as it suffers from severe racial segregation and classism. As far as titles go, Seattle is not the rainiest city in the country, nor it is not home to the most suicides per year--that title belongs to Las Vegas. The city, like the truth, is always a little bit more grey. Reported by Huffington Post 2 days ago.

GCL Congratulates Imprint Enterprises Launches Mobile Customer Management Check In App

Imprint Enterprises, Inc., an Aurora-based supplier of barcode labeling supplies and software has announced a complete mobile customer management application called Catapult, which is part of the Slingshot family of mobile applications.Imprint Enterprises created new mobile (Android) customer management/check-in solution called Catapult, for family entertainment facilities such as paintball parks, amusement parks, water parks, and essentially any facility with a ticket window. Catapult is a complete customer registration and management system in the cloud, including a ticket window app, mobile app, and all associated hardware and supplies as needed.

Catapult has already been implemented successfully in checking-in competitors at CPX Sports in Joliet, IL. CPX sought to expedite check-in for players, and realized a pre-registration process would offer more opportunity for players to check-in early. They also wanted to create a way for customers to check-in onsite beyond the ticket window.

Catapult allows CPX Sports to process admissions via a smart phone or tablet. Team members use the web-based Catapult to check-in players in line, and print a receipt on the spot with the Zebra MZ 220 mobile receipt printer. Then, CPX uses the Zebra HC100 printer with Z-Band Fun wristbands equipped with barcodes for electronic access into the park.

Normally it would take us 20 hours to check in 2,000 players, says Sean Scott at CPX Sports, but with Catapult application and Zebra Mobile Receipt and Wristband printers we can do it in about 6 or 7.

Toronto’s Golem

Like the aurora borealis on crack, the Rob Ford flameout has streaked across the northern skies for days, weeks, even months longer than any sensible political scandal ought to. Long after it was clear that this whole thing needed to be shut down, the mayor of Toronto has continued to take up air and space in world media coverage. Why are we still reading about this guy? The simple answer is that Canadians are too nice to oust even a batshit crazy leader; the more complicated one is that Toronto doesn’t actually have a mechanism to fully remove a batshit crazy leader from public office since it doesn’t happen much. Latest Zimmerman arrest is a reminder of just how broken US justice system is | Michael P Jeffries

There's a presumption of white innocence. It reflects a society rife with institutional racism and prejudice against people of color

George Zimmerman is a disturbed and dangerous man. He is a man with a prolonged history of violence and poor judgment, who is yet to demonstrate remorse for taking the life of an innocent 16-year-old boy. The police chief who oversees Zimmerman's former Florida town agreed with a concerned citizen who wrote that Zimmerman was "a Sandy Hook [or] Aurora waiting to happen".

This past summer Zimmerman was pulled over for speeding twice, and he participated in what appears to be a staged car crash rescue to repair his soiled public image. His recent arrest and felony charge for assaulting his girlfriend and threatening her with a firearm was met with little surprise by those of us who were devastated by outcome of the Trayvon Martin murder trial.

As evidence mounts that Zimmerman is a menace to society, his character will come under increasing attack. These too-little-too-late public condemnations may feel like vindication in light of the injustice of the Trayvon Martin tragedy. But left unchecked, shouts of "I told you so!" will drown out the most crucial lessons of the saga. Zimmerman's personal failings and poor character played undeniable roles in Martin's death. But the injustice of the Martin murder is not enabled or sustained by "bad guys" like Zimmerman. Rather, it is produced by a broken criminal punishment system that reflects a society rife with institutional racism and prejudice against people of color.

During the murder trial, defense attorney Mark O'Mara explicitly told the jury, "Do not give anybody the benefit of the doubt except for George Zimmerman." Indeed, Zimmerman was given the benefit of the doubt by the legal system at every turn, and it began long before the trial started. It took sustained protests by Martin's parents, neighbors, and prominent civil rights advocates merely for Martin's killer to be arrested and brought to court.

The presumption of white innocence is interwoven with the perceptions of black and Hispanic criminality and threat. Law professors Allie Rolnick and Priscilla Ocen explain that self-defense laws like "Stand Your Ground" are based on the idea of "reasonable fear" of severe bodily damage. So Zimmerman's "not guilty" verdict cannot be separated from condemnation of Martin as fearsome, despite the fact that Zimmerman pursued Martin in a vehicle and confronted the boy with a loaded gun. These codependent biases of white innocence and black guilt were crystalized through comparisons between Zimmerman (who is Hispanic but was perceived as white) and Marissa Alexander, a young black woman who was sent to prison after her "Stand Your Ground" defense claim was denied. Alexander, who fired warning shots to scare off her allegedly abusive husband, had her case reopened after the Zimmerman verdict.

The plague of racial prejudice is not speculation. Stereotypes of black criminality run rampant and are empirically documented (pdf). Implicit and explicit racial prejudice against blacks and Hispanics has increased since President Obama took office in 2008. But the most disastrous impact of prejudice is not social unpleasantness, it is its codification and reinforcement in institutions like the police system and the courts.

New York City's "Stop and Frisk" policy and Arizona's immigrant surveillance law are two ongoing legal battles that exemplify these trends. Despite Obama's heartfelt response to the Zimmerman verdict, little action has been taken by the federal government and racial profiling and mass incarceration of blacks and Hispanics continues unchecked.

The idea that we can address Zimmerman's transgressions without talking about the interplay of race, gender, and class is often framed as a commitment to neutrality. Judge Debra Nelson, who presided over the Zimmerman trial, actually banned the phrase "racial profiling" from being used during proceedings. But silence about race, gender, and class is not neutrality. Colorblindness and "postracialism" require the active denial of continued oppression of people of color and the racist stigma that follows young black men and boys like Martin.

Zimmerman's latest arrest presents another opportunity for "neutrality" to manifest as active denial. Zimmerman's history of domestic violence cannot be treated as unrelated to his current predicament. As Salamishah Tillet pointed out during the murder trial, previous abuses of women and children are often precursors to repeat offenses, especially when left unchecked by the criminal punishment system.

We have to guard against attributing the Martin tragedy solely to Zimmerman's behavior and taking satisfaction in his disgrace. The Martin murder and the plague of domestic violence against women and children should inspire anger and righteous discontent. But rather than exhausting ourselves with calls to lock Zimmerman up and throw away the key, our indignation needs to be channeled and used as fuel for a long and unglamorous fight.

We have to reform immigration policy, ban racial profiling, and repeal sentencing laws that disproportionately penalize people of color. We also have change the ways we talk about criminal punishment, innocence, and white male privilege. Neutrality is a smokescreen for racism and sexism inscribed in law and on our bodies. So we have to talk truthfully about race, gender, and class in courts, legislative halls, schools, and in our homes if we are to move towards justice. Catching the bad guy will not stop the crime. The Family Photo Session

Is it so wrong to want an amazing photograph of my family with my extended family with everyone's eyes open? IS THAT SO WRONG?

As the great thinker Kim Kardashian once said, "You must go through Kris Humphries to get to Kanye West." Who knew that Kris Humphries was code for flesh-eating ants, blinding sun and screaming children?

Of course, as I now stare at these glorious, serene images of flaxen-haired angels and sunbeams, I know it was all so very worth it, especially come holiday time, when you'll be sitting in a snow drift and we'll be sitting on a beach on your fridge, gloating. But back to Kris Humphries and the 8th circle of hell.

The multi-generational family photo session is like walking over burning coals very, very slowly, 57 times, until everyone's mouths are stretched in grimaces that are less Hitchcock-ian and more Disney -- and this is once we've actually found the photographer, which takes a good half hour, because he's busy photographing 200 other families on the beach at the exact same time.

It's "Where's Waldo? The White and Khaki Edition" and that's when it dawns on me, as I await the return of my husband from the brave 2013 Photographer-Search-And-Recovery-Mission, that my family -- COLLECTIVE GASP! -- is also dressed in white and khaki!

Under normal circumstances, I would cackle like a hyena -- it's so Brownie Troop Leader, so Mid-1990's-Tech-Company! -- but these are not normal circumstances. These are circumstances in which my family is trying to painstakingly follow photo session clothing ordinances. We don't want to -- God forbid -- disrupt the nesting sea turtles with our brash colors and patterns! And also, these photographs need to be a testament to my family's superiority for decades -- nay, centuries -- to come! We tried so hard to be the Fresh Prince of the Family Photo Session, but alas, we're just another Carlton in a sea of Carltons.

It's too late for regrets. There is nothing ahead but sand in my poor choice of high heels.

Once the photographer has been spotted, we move as one clumsy, sweating mass to his nook near the cattails and there, I make the fatal error. The miscalculation that elevates the next 30 minutes from Code Red to Code Asteroid-Inferno-Apocalypse.

"Honey, watch where you put your feet, there are ants on the sand," I tell my 5-year-old, having sustained several bites myself.

ANTS ON THE SAND! ANTS ON THE SAND! ANTSANTSANTSANTS! SCREAMING! HYSTERIA!

I must get the situation under control! Which is difficult to do when my husband is hissing to me in low tones of accusation and distress and high tones of survival. Survival, I mutter, keep my eye on the prize! The holiday card! The holiday card! With the whimpering 5-year-old at last raised high in Papa's arms above the ants, I am feeling very final-season John & Kate Plus 8 as I steel myself for the flash of the camera.

And that's when the photographer requests that the ladies, THE WOMENFOLK-MINUS-NANA, sit down on the sand. On the sand filled with thousands of biting ants. In our dresses. With sweaty legs. While the dudes, THE MENFOLK, stand proprietarily behind, dapper, jovial, their asses not part of the ant al fresco. In a scene reminiscent of that high school drill team pep rally where I was forced to smile while wearing a unitard and doing the splits as the marching band played the school song, I force a smile that only the contestants of Survivor would recognize.

After seemingly hundreds of takes and choruses of "Look here, look here, open your eyes, stop squinting, look here, look up, ignore the sea gull, open your eyes, stop crying," we are instructed to hold hands and walk through the waves, in search of the elusive image of three generations perfectly reflected in the ocean. Please pause and imagine that moment in the movie Anchorman where the news team tries to turn around at the same time and look coyly at the camera, but can't do it.

Despite the aurora borealis of frizz haloing my head, there are no ants in the water, so my smile is slightly more genuine in those photos. Also, the end is near. Families are leaving, the beach is becoming less khakied, I can almost taste the margarita that my contract requires at the end of modeling sessions!

But the luck, it must be pushed. (As stated in the bylaws of life.)

Nana and Papa want a photo of themselves with all the grandchildren. Can you believe it? The sheer audacity! The gall! To want images of their grandchildren to treasure! (By the way, the key to treasured photographic memories of children is to ask everyone to look directly into the sun, while eardrums are lacerated by an inconsolable toddler.)

And then suddenly, it's done. The photographer never yells "Fin!" and throws his camera to his invisible assistant behind him or kisses me on both cheeks, but he starts talking about proofs and muttering "I hope I got the reflections," and I get the strange feeling he doesn't want to see any of us again. Or ever.

After taking a slow look around and assessing the damage -- both physical and emotional -- the family tumbleweed rolls back to the boardwalk, white shirts dingy, khakis resembling army fatigues. The PTSD will hit later, but at the moment everyone is giddy, elated, thrilled to have lived another day.

Survival! Survival!

The holiday card!
