Vitamin World Store To Open in Niles Patch Niles-Morton Grove, IL --

A Vitamin World store will soon open on the southwest corner of Harlem Avenue and Dempster Street in Niles.

It will add one more to parent company NBTY's (originally called Nature's Bounty) lineup of 456 stores nationwide. The closest locations are Evergreen Park, Aurora and Gurnee.

"We're the largest manufacturer of supplements in North America," said Greg McDougall, district manager. It sells under the labels of Vitamin World and Precision Engineering, its sports line. The chain is in the process of opening 75 new stores, he said.

Because the company is vertically integrated, manufacturing its own products and selling them in its stores, it can control the quality of what goes into them, he pointed out. It sells to other retailers, such as Vitamin Shoppe and GNC, he said.

"We're a very large corporation, but the retail side is growing," he observed.

Vitamin World is trying out a new store design in Niles, with a section called Sports Den, new light fixtures and a light, airy environment.

Employees go through a four to six month educational process about nutrition, wellness and how to watch for drug interactions, so that they can guide customers through the large assortment of products.

McDougall said the Niles store is shooting for a grand opening between Feb. 25 and 28.

Remodelers Group Presents Aurora Kitchens with CotY Award Patch Hillsborough, NJ --

Aurora Kitchens & Interiors of Somerville took home a prestigious “Contractor of the Year” award from the Central Jersey Chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry for excellence in design and workmanship.

At its Evening of Excellence Awards Dinner at Maggiano’s Little Italy, in Bridgewater, on Jan. 25, the Association presented one of its coveted annual Contractor of the Year (CotY) Awards to Aurora for a difficult remodeling project in the “Residential Interior Under $100,000” Category.

All entries were scored by an independent panel of judges in six separate areas: client satisfaction, functionality, aesthetics, craftsmanship, innovation and degree of difficulty.  This year’s entries were judged by a team of members of the North Jersey Chapter of NARI.

“The project basically involved a complete redesign of the entire first floor of the house,” Branchburg resident Kelley Evens, senior designer and a partner in Aurora Kitchens and Interiors, said.  “With three young children, the layout was all wrong for their lifestyle.  The goal was to make it feel homier.”

Prior to the beginning of the project, the homeowners decided to reassign the use of each room.  The formal living room, which was not conducive to their lifestyle, became the family room.  The formal dining room became the music/sitting room and the family room became the dining room.

“Our objective was to make the entire first floor more cohesive” says Evens.  That included rearranging the furniture to make TV watching more comfortable for the entire family.

The kitchen was also reconfigured. The range and refrigerator were relocated for better flow. New 42-inch high cabinets replaced 30-inch cabinets to provide additional storage.

“These changes not only made the kitchen more attractive, but much more functional as well,” Hillsborough resident Kolbe Clark, senior designer and a partner in Aurora Kitchens and Interiors, said.

“New lighting, a hardwood floor throughout the entire first floor, a complementary color palette, and lots of neat accessories provided the finishing touches that unified the entire space,” says Clark.  A description of the project, complete with before and after photographs, can be seen on the Central Jersey NARI website at www.cjnari.com.

Aurora Kitchens & Interiors is a full service design firm offering a wide array of products and services from design consultation to complete project management, including both residential and commercial designs, throughout the central New Jersey area.  Projects range from new furniture for a family room to complete kitchen remodeling.

For additional information, contact Kolbe Clark (kclark@auroradesignsnj.com) or Kelley Evens (kevens@auroradesignsnj.com) at (908) 566-8555.

Aurora Man Sentenced for Cocaine Delivery Patch Oswego, IL --

An Aurora man was sentenced for five years in the Illinois Department of Corrections after being charged with a cocaine delivery, according to Kendall County State's Attorney Eric Weis.

Cedric Cole, 29, of the 700 block of Grove Street, Aurora, pled guilty to the charge of the unlawful delivery of a controlled substance. He was arrested after delivering cocaine to an undercover narcotics officer in an incident in September 2011, said Weis.

Cole will be required to serve two-years of mandatory supervised release after he serves his five-year prison sentence.

Weis commended the work of the Kendall County Cooperative Police Assistance Team for their efforts in taking a dealer of cocaine off the streets of Kendall County.  Reported by Patch 9 hours ago.

Giffords Lends Voice To Powerful New Control Ad

With slow and deliberate words, former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) provides narration for a new television ad released Monday to promote stricter gun controls.

“We have a problem, where we shop, where we pray, where our children go to school,” Giffords says, over black-and-white images of memorials near the sites of recent mass shootings in Aurora, Colo., Tucson, Ariz., Oak Creek, Wis., and Newtown, Conn. “But there are solutions we can agree on, even gun owners like us. Take it from me, Congress must act. Let’s get this done.”

*(Watch the ad above)*

The spot concludes with Giffords speaking into the camera alongside her husband, former astronaut Mark Kelly. Giffords suffered a gunshot wound to the head during a mass shooting in Tucson in early 2011 and has been on a difficult road to recovery since. The ad is her latest involvement in a campaign to pressure Congress to address gun violence in the wake of December's massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.

Funded by Americans for Responsible Solutions, an anti-gun violence super PAC launched by Giffords and Kelly last month, Politico reports that the commercial will air in the Washington, D.C. area, as well as markets represented by top congressional leaders. The hometown airwaves of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) will all feature the ad.

This is the first high-profile television offering from Americans for Responsible Solutions, which has announced plans to raise $20 million ahead of the 2014 elections in an effort to combat the influence of pro-gun advocates such as the National Rifle Association. The group has decided to focus on pressing Congress to move on enhanced background checks and limiting magazine sizes to 10 bullets. Giffords' plea in the ad is similar to one that she delivered directly to Congress in January, when she gave opening remarks at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on gun violence, urging lawmakers to "be bold."

Americans for Responsible Solutions is looking to make the most out of the ad's rollout. Politico reports that the group has reserved cable airtime in the Washington market at either end of President Barack Obama's State of the Union address on Tuesday.

Giffords and Kelly will be in attendance as Obama speaks to a joint session of Congress, as guests of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and former Giffords aide and current Rep. Ron Barber (D-Ariz.). Giffords also attended the State of the Union last year, shortly after announcing that she'd retire to focus on her rehabilitation. Reported by Huffington Post 11 hours ago.

Woman Arrested For Heroin Possession Patch Solon, OH --

A 37-year-old Solon woman is facing felony drug charges after Solon Police said they found her with heroin and needles during a traffic stop.

Charity Masterson, 37, of Solon, was charged with drug possession, a fifth-degree felony.

Cuyahoga County Children and Family Services were also contacted because Masterson's daughter was in the car when she was found with drugs and arrested, according to the police report.

According to a police report, a Solon officer saw a car lurch forward suddenly while stopped at the traffic light at Solon and Aurora roads. The officer pulled over the car, and a search uncovered five packets of suspected heroin and six hypodermic needles in the car and in the woman's purse. Reported by Patch 6 hours ago.

Best Non-Division 1 Players: Click Here for Your D2, D3 or NAIA School

After we released the Value Add rankings for Division 1 players, Breitbart Sports received many requests for the best players who do not get full scholarships. If you went to an NCAA Division 1 or 2 school, or an NAIA school, click Control+F to see where the top players at your school rank. Ali Haidar of Michigan Tech did not pick up a basketball until he was 16 years old and now he is the top-rated non-Division 1 player, while some believe 7-footer A.J. Matthews of Farmington State will be the 10th player to ever go from Division 3 to the NBA.

These ratings are not the precise measurement at www.valueaddbasketball.com because we do not have all the stats we need for those equations. We also will continue to develop this system to account for the pace of games played by the team, and how good their defense is. For now, these rankings simply weight players at each level of play (NCAA Division 2 players face tougher competition than NAIA Division 2 players etc.) for those players who are among the leaders in points, rebounds, assists, steals and/or blocks.

We list out these stats for the top 50 players, and then list the names of players ranked from 51 to 2000. If a stat is not listed for a player, it simply means he is not one of the leaders in his division in that category.

Conspiracy Theorists Are Harassing 'Dark Knight Rises' Shooting Victims

Conspiracy Theorists Are Harassing 'Dark Knight Rises' Shooting Victims Conspiracy theorists tend to get vocal after big tragedies.

Now, victims of the shooting at a crowded movie theater in Aurora, Colo. are being harassed relentlessly, Salon reported on Friday.

It's gotten so bad that a county lawyer prosecuting suspect James Holmes asked a court to remove victims' names from public records.

Deputy District Attorney George Brauchler said last week in a motion filed with the court that victims and their families had  "expressed concerns for their privacy and personal safety."

Conspiracy theorists have "contacted victims in this case, some of whom have even gone so far as to recruit other members of the public to contact the victims and to publicly post maps with the home addresses and phone numbers of the victims on various social media sites,” he wrote.

Jordan Ghawi, whose sister was killed in the shooting, told Salon that one conspiracy theorist asked him if he had seen his sister's body. Ghawi refused to answer.

“From there, it went to threatening emails that included death threats … he did threaten my life at one point,” Ghawi explained to Salon, saying he learned the same person had harassed the wife of a pilot of one of the planes hijacked on 9/11.

Conspiracy theories began to emerge soon after the July 20 shooting at a midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises." Holmes has been charged with murder and attempted murder in the massacre where 12 people died and 58 were injured.

Gordon Livingston, M.D.: Guns and Mental Health

$
0
0
As we debate the steps to reducing gun violence in the society a couple points need to be understood: 1. The link between violent crime and mental illness is weak, and 2. Mental health professionals are poor at predicting anyone's propensity for any specific behavior, including homicide.

Although it is mass shootings, particularly the massacre of school children in Newtown, that capture our attention and have accelerated the current discussion, Americans for the most part kill each other with guns in ones and twos. Of the total number of gun deaths in this country, around 30,000 a year, the majority are not the result of mental illness, but of ordinary human emotions like anger, hate, greed, and despair. In fact, about half of all shootings are suicides.

It is certainly true that our mental health system is in critical need of improvement, specifically in the area of funding. Twenty-eight states and D.C. reduced their mental health funding by a total of $1.6 billion between 2009 and 2012. With the "deinstitutionalization" movement of the '60s and '70s, many inpatient facilities were closed or reduced in size. It was assumed that a network of outpatient mental health clinics would take care of those previously hospitalized. This assumption has proven to be unattainable, largely because of inadequate public funding; instead many of the mentally ill are now on our streets or in our jails. (A 2010 report by the Treatment Advocacy Center found that there are more people with severe mental illness in prisons than in hospitals.) Inhumane and scandalous though that may be, few of them present a danger to public safety.

The fact that we are even talking about the mental health system as we consider the problem of gun violence is because a couple of the recent perpetrators of mass shootings have evidently suffered from psychotic illness. AND those who don't want to talk about the proliferation of guns in our society would prefer we discuss other subjects: mental illness, video games, the demise of school prayer, to name a few.

In order to appear even-handed, those proposing laws that would require universal background checks for gun purchases, or limits on access to assault weapons and high-capacity magazines believe they must address the issue of keeping guns out of the hands of the mental ill. (Psychotherapists are already obligated to warn any person whom a patient might specifically threaten with bodily harm.) New York has recently passed a law requiring therapists to report to police anyone who they believe might be dangerous to themselves or others. Presumably, the police could then search the patient's house and remove guns. The governor of Maryland has proposed a similar piece of legislation. From a therapist's point of view it is hard enough to win the confidence of people seeking mental health assistance. Such a requirement for breaching confidentiality in this manner could have a serious and irreversible effect on treatment without any concomitant increase in public safety.

The college psychiatrist in Colorado who was treating the Aurora theater shooter is already facing lawsuits from families because, while she notified the school's threat assessment team of his dangerousness, she did not involuntarily commit him to a mental hospital, a short-term remedy at best.

The only real predictor of future violence in anyone turns out to be a past history of violent behavior. Absent this, professionals are little better than the average citizen at identifying those likely to harm others. Many people report violent fantasies (remember your reaction to the last person to cut you off in traffic); few act on them.

It is true that our under-funded mental health system is broken and that many who require care are unable to receive it in a timely or affordable manner. It is estimated that 7 to 10 percent of emergency room visits are for psychiatric reasons. If it is determined that they need inpatient care, people may spend hours or even days in the emergency room before a bed can be found. This is not acceptable. A civilized society can be judged on the way it treats its most needy and powerless citizens.

As we confront the reality of these systemic deficits, however, we ought not to do so under the illusion that we are responding to the problem of gun violence. These are separate and largely unrelated issues, both of which deserve our immediate attention and informed response. Reported by Huffington Post 4 hours ago.

'Dark Knight' Weapons Suspect Pleads Guilty On 2 Charges, Still Faces A Third

Patch Westlake, OH --

Scott Smith -- the man caught carrying a Glock 9mm semi-automatic pistol, 4 knives and various medical supplies into a Westlake theater -- pleaded guilty to two counts of carrying concealed weapons today in Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas, according to The Huffington Post.

Smith, 38, of North Ridgeville, will still contest a third count of having weapons under a disability when his trial begins Wednesday.

The disability, in this case, is a drug dependency, according to prosecutors.

Smith's attorney, John Hildebrand, told The Huffington Post that his client's change of plea was not part of a plea deal. Instead, he pleaded guilty to the two weapons counts based upon the evidence.

Smith entered the Regal Cinemas in Westlake on Aug. 4, 2012 carrying a Maxpedition bag, which is commonly used to transport firearms.

An off-duty officer inside the theater noticed the suspect carrying the bag and followed him into the I-Max Theater, which was showing the movie Batman.

Once inside the theater, the officer approached Smith and requested to see the bag he had in his possession. A search of the suspects bag revealed the weapons and supplies. Smith was then placed under arrest.

Smith's lawyer claimed the weapons were for self-defense.

The incident came on the heels of the July 20, 2012 shooting in Aurora, CO that left 12 dead and dozens injured. Reported by Patch 2 hours ago.

Is Novato Wary of Its Role in Violent Video Game Development?

Is Novato Wary of Its Role in Violent Video Game Development? Patch Novato, CA --

Animation programming sounds like a harmless enough industry, but there is a twist: Such programmers occasionally work on the most violent video games. And some of those programmers work in Novato.

Activision|Blizzard and Take-Two Interactive have studios in Novato where artists and engineers work on game development. The Marin Independent Journal analyzed the local ties to such games in this story, pinpointing those local companies that employ people who make those games. The nonprofit Marin Economic Forum has targeted digital filmmaking for promotion in coming years.

In the wake of the gun-related massacres in Newtown, Conn., and Aurora, Colo., among so many other cities, there has been a lot of talk about gun control. There could be an ethical backlash about the encouragement of more violent games being made here in Marin.

UPDATE: Driver Charged With Aggravated DUI After Route 25 Crash, Passenger Critical Patch Montgomery, IL --

A 35-year-old man faces aggravated DUI and reckless driving charges in connection to Sunday's serious car crash on Route 25, police said.

Victor M. Alvarez, of the 1400 block of Golden Oaks Parkway, Aurora, was driving northbound in a silver Nissan Murano crossover sport-utility vehicle that ran off the west side of the roadway and struck a utility pole, according to a North Aurora police statement.

Police responded at 2:11 p.m. Sunday to the crash scene, located about 100 ft. north of Ridge Road. Upon arrival, officers found the Murano with heavy passenger side damage.

"A passenger in Alvarez’s vehicle, a 39-year-old male of West Chicago, was airlifted to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove," the statement said. "He was in critical condition late Sunday night."

The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office authorized the following charges against Alvarez:

· Aggravated DUI—great bodily harm

· Aggravated Reckless Driving—cause great bodily harm, disability or disfigurement

Alvarez appeared at a bond hearing at the Aurora Branch Court Monday morning. His bail was set at $100,000, 10 percent of which he would need to post to be released. He was transported to the Kane County jail between 9 and 10 a.m. Monday, where he is currently being held.

The two charges against Alvarez are both Class 4 felonies. If convicted of any Class 4 felony, Alvarez could be sentenced to up to three years in prison, according to sentencing guidelines in the current state statute.

Route 25 was closed from Ridge Road to Banbury Road while crash investigators processed the scene. North Aurora police were assisted by the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team. Route 25 was reopened to traffic at about 7 p.m. Sunday, the statement said.

The crash remains under investigation.

Please note that criminal charges are merely accusations. All persons arrested are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Congressman Lance Says Solutions to Gun Violence are as Complicated as Issue Itself

$

Patch Westfield, NJ --

Dear Editor,

I had the honor of meeting Ms. Bennett and four other representatives of NJ Residents for Action where for more than one hour we had what I thought was a cordial and frank discussion on the issues surrounding gun control and gun violence in America.

During the meeting I expressed my willingness to consider a number of gun control measures as part of a comprehensive, anti-violence effort this year.

I restated my support for a comprehensive study of our laws aimed at keeping guns out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill, potentially including closing gun-show loopholes and tightening the background-check process on gun sales as well as examining our current entertainment culture where Hollywood and video game makers tend to de-sensitize gun violence.

Committees of jurisdiction in both the U.S. House and Senate are currently working on legislation in these particular areas and I pledged to carefully review these measures upon completion of the committees' work.

I also pointed out that the House Energy and Commerce Committee — of which I am a member – will take a lead role in examining the current state of federal mental health research programs and what role mental illness played in the tragedies in Newtown, Aurora, Tucson and at Virginia Tech.

My committee is already working closely with the Obama Administration on proposals both new and old to better identify and treat people with mental health problems.

For example just last week the Energy and Commerce Committee sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) listing eleven recommendations made by President Bush following the 2007 Virginia Tech shootings that dealt with mental health issues and asked HHS Secretary Sebelius to provide status updates on each by Feb. 21.

“In order to determine what actions were taken after previous tragedies, and whether those actions were effective, the committee seeks information on the status of HHS’s efforts to implement the recommendations made in the 2007 Report following the Virginia Tech shootings," the letter said. I hope to keep all constituents informed and updated on our work.

I do firmly believe that the solutions are as complex as the problems themselves. And while no set of laws can eliminate evil in the world, we as a Nation have an obligation to work together and remain focused on the issue at hand – keeping firearms out of the hands of those in our society who wish to do harm.

I respectfully hope Ms. Bennett and her group will be part of this effort.

Best personal wishes,

Leonard Lance

ONE BILLION RISING began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS. On February15, 2013, the day after V-Day’s15th anniversary, “Within Every Woman is a Goddess” will join activists, writers, thinkers, celebrities, and women and men across the world as we express their outrage, demand change, strike, dance, and RISE in defiance of the injustices women suffer, demanding an end at last to violence against women.

“When we started V-Day 14 years ago, we had the outrageous idea that we could end violence against women,” said Ensler. “Now, we are both stunned and thrilled to see that this global action is truly escalating and gaining force, with union workers, parliament members, celebrities, and women of all backgrounds coming forward to join the campaign. When we come together to demand an end to violence against women and girls it will be a truly global voice that will rise up.”

The women’s Group “Within Every Woman is a Goddess” will present The Vagina Monologues, Friday, February15, 2013 at The Prisco Community Center, 150 West Illinois Avenue, Aurora, IL 60506. Appetizers will be served at 6:30 p.m. with the presentation to start at 7:30 p.m. Proceeds from this event will benefit Mutual Ground, Inc, the Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence and the V-Day Organization. The cost is $25 a ticket.
