In the Gunman's Path: Painful Parallels Between the Navy Yard and Standard Gravure Shootings

$

0
The tragic shootings in Building 197 at the Washington Navy Yard on Monday were for some of us a searing reminder of another mass murder, nearly a quarter century ago this month, at Louisville's Standard Gravure printing company. On the morning of September 14, 1989, an alienated Standard printer, Joseph Wesbecker, 47, entered the plant at 8:30, carrying a veritable arsenal of weapons -- a semi-automatic AK-47 derivative made in China, a 9-mm pistol, and a duffel bag containing three more guns, a bayonet and hundreds of rounds of ammunition).

Wesbecker entered the building, which was a part of the Courier-Journal complex on Broadway at Sixth Street, and rode an elevator to the third floor executive office suite, where he opened fire on receptionists and began a rampage in the building that would leave eight people dead and 12 others injured before he killed himself. If anyone saw him come in, they probably didn't think much about him because he was a familiar figure in our part of town.

I remember Wesbecker, who was known by colleagues as "Rocky," from seeing him hang around the snack bar at the rear of the Courier-Journal building. In the years before 1986, employees at The Courier-Journal and Louisville Times, Standard Gravure and WHAS all generally knew one another. It was a small city, with over 3,000 employees, a 24-hour cafeteria, a day-care center for employees' children, a full-service health club and many other amenities. Then, in January 1986, to resolve a family dispute, Barry Bingham Sr. put all of his family's holdings on the market, a step that would, by year's end, break up a local media empire. It was also the beginning of the end of a wonderful community that was dedicated to excellent journalism and printing.

Wesbecker, who suffered from depression, was disgruntled because he had been given an assignment in the press room that he disliked. He was on disability leave for mental illness at the time. His own family members were aware of his anger at the new executives of Standard Gravure, who, he felt, were far less sympathetic employers than the Binghams and their executives had been.

On the day of the shooting I was far away in St. Paul, Minnesota, attending an editors' convention. I had gone back to my room to give my brother a call, to wish him a happy birthday. Before I could dial the number, my mother came on the line (this was some years before cell phones made out-of-town contact a simpler matter) and told me to turn on CNN. There had been a shooting at the Courier-Journal building, she said.

I have rarely been more shocked in my life, and in the minutes that followed, I sat frozen to the screen, waiting for more news about what was happening back in Louisville in the complex where I had worked for more than twenty years. At first, the news was sketchy. The employees had been evacuated from the building, but it was unclear exactly where Wesbecker's journey through the connected structures took him. Later it would become evident that before he shot himself, he was heading toward the executive offices on the third floor of the Courier-Journal. My own office was there, off the lobby directly across from the bank of elevators. My close friends and colleagues were all around. They were next on Wesbecker's deranged list.

There had been many other mass-slayings in America before September 14, 1989, but none had the immediacy that the Standard Gravure shootings did for so many of us. And in the next 23 years that I continued to work at the Courier-Journal, rarely a month passed without wondering how secure we were at our desks and in our offices. Even as the company beefed up security, required first photo IDs, then hand scanners and other devices, there never again was the complete security we once felt in a workplace that operated literally 24 hours a day.

In the last few years I worked at the Courier-Journal, I often came into the office on weekends to get ahead for the following week, and generally my office was the only one that was open. Many of the offices were vacant, the result of the wave of layoffs and retirements that reduced the editorial staff from 12 in 1989 to only three by 2012. Occasionally a security guard would walk down the hall on patrol, but as the size of the workforce was reduced again and again, there were moments when I did not feel safe. In time, there was just one guard for the entire building on weekends. Looking back, I had every reason to be scared. Some of us even wondered if the third floor were haunted -- one Sunday afternoon I am certain I heard a typewriter clacking away, even though there were no more typewriters in the surrounding offices.

The Washington Navy Yard is filled with employees. Indeed, the atrium where the slain workers, most of them in their 50s or older, were gathered for breakfast, must have seemed so peaceful on Monday morning. No doubt people were slowly gearing up for the new week with an extra cup of coffee, some scrambled eggs and bacon or yogurt. The time of the shootings was almost identical to those that began in Louisville a quarter century earlier. The victims were no doubt just as surprised, and the ones who were not injured were certainly equally traumatized. Indeed, the parallels are too vivid to ignore. And the question we must ask is how many more must die in this way before something breaks in the American people? A victim's widow lamented: "I can't believe this is happening again."

Just in the last year, shootings in an Aurora, Colorado, movie theater and in a Newtown, Connecticut, elementary school resulted in unspeakable tragedies. A dozen innocent moviegoers, taking in a new "Batman" film, shot to death in the darked theater. Twenty little children and six of their teachers gunned down at the Sandy Hook Elementary School. And just seven years ago the tragedy at Virginia Tech, where 32 people were slain. The list goes on and on. And the perpetrators provide evidence that mass murder is a crime committed by all kinds of people, regardless of race, creed or color.

Gun control legislation is only one solution. A broader question, I think, is whether Americans really need all of these guns. The lobby that protects them cites the Second Amendment as a defense, even against bloody slaughters like the one on Monday. There are no easy answers, but I believe the poisonous climate for civil dialogue in our nation today makes it all the more difficult and less likely that any kind of substantive change will occur. Meanwhile, none of us can feel safe -- anywhere -- knowing that a troubled person with a backpack filled with guns will fire at his demons, but the targets will be innocent people, just trying to go about their daily business. Is this the climate we want to live in?

A footnote: The rotogravure business, which used high quality color presses and slick paper, fell apart in the 1990s, and in 1992, Standard Gravure shut down for good. Subsequently, the Courier-Journal tore down the building and it is now a parking lot. But though the site of the mass murders is gone, the incident remains one of the most tragic in our city's history. Reported by Huffington Post 2 days ago.

The Study That Your School Leaders Need to See

$

0
Going back to school is full of surprises, but this one really rocked our world: According to research from the University of Illinois at Chicago, nearly nine out of every 10 parents want school leaders to make schools better for students who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender. Nearly everyone is on board with schools addressing LGBT issues, including parents in rural areas and parents who identify as evangelical Christians.

You're probably thinking, "What's so surprising?" It's a no-brainer for most parents who have heard the slurs, seen the exclusion, or talked with their own kids about the pain caused by being harassed at school. So why did this study rock our world at the Illinois Safe Schools Alliance?

Because policy makers and many school leaders have tiptoed around LGBT issues for years. They assume that it is controversial to include LGBT people in history lessons or to train teachers on how to intervene when they hear slurs. And sometimes we've bought into that assumption too.

In the past few years we've had many victories, but we've also seen a couple of church leaders scuttle anti-bullying work in Erie, Ill. We've watched a scared school board in Aurora, Ill., say they were going to rescind a policy to protect transgender students even though they knew it was the wrong thing to do. And we've seen the Illinois Statehouse sink a bill that would have helped pregnant students because one fringe organization declared it a gay rights bill.

We know that the setbacks happened even though most parents supported the efforts, but we didn't realize just how overwhelming that support was. So with all that support behind us, why do schools still hesitate to do what is best for their students?

If nine out of 10 parents stand with us in making LGBT-friendly schools, one out of 10 does not. And guess which parents call their principals, school boards, and policy makers. Guess which parents take over meetings and are willing to shut down the business of running a school to make sure they are heard. Why don't they hear from parents like us?

We are determined to make this school year different.

We're empowered by this new data, and hopefully you are too. You know that schools full of anti-gay slurs are schools where students don't learn. You know that teachers should intervene when they see harassment in their classrooms. And you know that schools where some students feel excluded are not schools that will succeed. You know it, and now it is time that your principal knows it.

Join the thousands of parents who are taking a pledge to talk to their principal about creating more welcoming school environments. Take the Facebook action below and we'll send you our best tips for talking to school leaders, ideas to get the conversation started, and our research about what works to end the harassment:Post by Illinois Safe Schools Alliance. In only a minute, you can start the process to create safer, more respectful classrooms. Start with a click and join others just like you in telling school leaders that its time to stop tiptoeing around the hate that hurts our children. Together we'll make the start of a new school year the start of a new school.

The path to bring Firefox to Windows 8 may be longer than Mozilla had originally anticipated, but the first important milestone to its January arrival is now at hand. Firefox for Windows 8 has graduated into the Aurora (pre-beta) channel, which provides experienced users and tire kickers a more reliable alternative to the previous nightly builds. In this release, the browser includes touch and gesture support, and it even offers up Firefox Sync and Windows Share integration. There's plenty to appreciate on the backend, too, such as WebGL, asm.js and hardware-accelerated HTML5 video. According to Mozilla, it'll focus on improving performance and responsiveness over the coming weeks, which is something to look forward to, if your trial run is less than ideal.

Hong Kong Braces For Gigantic Typhoon

HONG KONG (AP) — The year's most powerful typhoon was grinding closer to Hong Kong on Sunday, forcing hundreds of flights to be canceled and shutting down shipping after pummeling island communities in the Philippines and Taiwan with heavy rains and fierce winds.

Typhoon Usagi was expected to make landfall just north of Hong Kong late Sunday or early Monday, with forecasters warning that it posed a "severe threat" to the southern Chinese city.

Usagi — Japanese for rabbit — was classified as a severe typhoon, packing sustained winds of 175 kilometers (109 miles) per hour, with gusts of up to 213 kph (132 mph).

The storm was downgraded from a super typhoon on Saturday — when its sustained winds fell below 241 kilometers (150 miles) per hour — as it passed through the Luzon Strait separating the Philippines and Taiwan, likely sparing residents in both places from the most destructive winds near its eye.

In the Philippines, Usagi left at least two people dead and two others missing, while in Taiwan nine people were hurt by falling trees on Kinmen island off China's coast.

By late Sunday afternoon, the typhoon was about 210 kilometers (130 miles) east of Hong Kong, moving west at 20 kph (12 mph), the Hong Kong Observatory said.

It was expected to skirt Hong Kong about 100 kilometers (62 miles) to the north between Sunday night and Monday morning.

The observatory said that by 7 p.m. local time it would raise the No. 8 storm warning signal, the third highest on a five-point scale, up from the current No. 3 standby signal.

The typhoon wreaked havoc on flight schedules at airports in Hong Kong, nearby Macau and mainland China, upsetting travel plans for many passengers who were returning home at the end of the three-day mid-autumn festival long weekend.

Hong Kong International Airport said 353 arriving and departing flights were canceled and another 67 delayed.

Two of Hong Kong's biggest airlines, Cathay Pacific Airways and Dragonair, said flights to and from the city's airport would be canceled from 6 p.m. Sunday and resume Monday if conditions permit.

Major Chinese airlines also canceled flights to Hong Kong, Macau and cities in neighboring Guangdong and Fujian provinces, China's official Xinhua news agency reported.

Fujian province suspended shipping between mainland China and Taiwan, Xinhua said.

The Guangdong provincial government urged people to prepare for the storm, which was forecast to slam into the manufacturing heartland of the Pearl River Delta as it skirted Hong Kong.

Guangdong authorities asked more than 44,000 fishing boats to return to port, while Fujian province evacuated thousands of people from low-lying coastal areas, Xinhua said.

In Taiwan, more than 3,300 people were evacuated from flood-prone areas and mountainous regions. The storm also caused a landslide that buried a rail line on Taiwan's southeast coast, but rail services were restored by Sunday morning.

Another landslide late Saturday at a village in the southeast sent mud and rocks crashing through the ground floor of a resort spa, forcing the evacuation of frightened guests. The Chihben River breached its levies upriver, turning the town's main street into a rock-strewn stream, flooding homes and damaging vehicles.

In the Philippines, a 50-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman drowned when a passenger boat capsized in rough waters off northeastern Aurora province, the Office of Civil Defense said Saturday. Two other people were missing in the incident, while the remaining nine passengers and crew were rescued.

The TIG Brush’s international tour lands at Fabtech 2013 — Nov. 18-21, 2013 — where Ensitech will introduce this new technology to North America, and visitors will be able to witness “The TIG Brush Effect” through live product demos and enter a raffle for the chance to win a free TIG Brush.

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) November 14, 2013

Ensitech is bringing its easy-to-use and portable TIG Brush Stainless Steel Weld Cleaning System to Fabtech 2013 in the hopes of showing American companies a quicker and higher-quality alternative to their current weld treatment methods.

The “TIG Brush Effect” as it has become known, is the wide-eyed look of disbelief frequently shown by first time observers as they view the TIG Brush’s superior weld cleaning & passivation capabilities.

Essential to these capabilities are the system’s proprietary electro-chemical process, combining low-toxicity fluids with a patented power supply and unique brush design which veritably serves to protect the weld against corrosion to the extent that the corrosion rate is reduced to below that of unwelded stainless steel*. Furthermore, the Ensitech Surface Finishing System provides welders a choice of four innovative cleaning fluids, plus dedicated fluids ranging from pre-weld preparation to finishing and marking, leaving fabricators covered at every step of the welding process.

Utilized by several industry-leading companies including Nestle, Bechtel and Thales Group, the TIG Brush has been rapidly adopted as the preferred weld-cleaning technology of quality and safety-conscious companies in the Food & Beverage, Oil & Gas, Defense, Chemical & Mining, Water Treatment, Energy and Construction industries across the globe.

Having recently established national distribution out of Chicago, Illinois, Ensitech is excited at the prospect of meeting new contacts at Fabtech and working toward the development of strong customer relationships as it officially unveils the TIG Brush to North America. Additionally, Ensitech booth visitors will have the opportunity to win a free TIG Brush by entering into a raffle, the winner of which will be determined on the final day of the show.
