Denver archbishop offers prayers, support to flood victims

Denver, Colo., Sep 13, 2013 / 12:06 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- As deadly flash flooding devastates the Colorado Front Range, Archbishop Samuel J. Aquila of Denver has asked for prayers for and offered assistance to those in the path of flood waters.

“I am praying for the souls of those victims, for their families and all people who are being affected by the flooding. I ask all people of good will to join me in prayer,” he said in a Sept. 12 statement.

Archbishop Aquila said he “heard with great concern” about the flooding and is especially concerned about the three people who have been killed.

“Through the local parishes in the affected areas, Catholic Charities stands ready to assist those in need,” he added.

As much as 14 inches of rain – the annual average rainfall in some parts of the state – has fallen in as little as 48 hours.

Thousands of Coloradans have been evacuated from their homes as the flooding has collapsed buildings and washed out roads. The city of Lyons has become isolated and required assistance from the National Guard to evacuate the area.

Colorado State University in Ft. Collins and University of Colorado in Boulder have canceled classes, as flooding has made much of both campuses – which are over 50 miles from one another – impassable.

In the cities of Aurora, Thornton and Boulder, heavy rains during rush hour made for a dangerous commute and major traffic delays.

Flash flooding has been especially devastating in areas that were hit by recent wildfires where there is no vegetation to slow the rainfall.

Governor John Hickenlooper signed a disaster declaration on Sept. 12 saying, “This could easily be a 50 or 100-year-flood.”

President Barack Obama approved federal disaster funding which will allow the Federal Emergency Management Agency to coordinate disaster relief efforts in Boulder, Larimer and El Paso counties.

Weekend forecasts call for a break in the rain, though a flash flood watch for the Front Range remains in effect until 9 p.m. on Sept. 13. Reported by CNA 3 days ago.

Angela Giron: My Loss Is Not A Victory For The NRA

$

WASHINGTON -- Angela Giron, one of the two Democratic state senators defeated in Colorado's historic recall election, wants to set the record straight: The work of anti-gun violence groups is far from over.

Giron and Senate President John Morse lost their seats Tuesday in Colorado's first recall, an effort that was orchestrated by gun rights activists and the National Rifle Association after the two lawmakers voted for stricter gun laws. The reforms, which included mandatory background checks for all firearms purchases and a limit on ammunition magazines to 15 rounds, were signed into law by Gov. John Hickenlooper (D) in March.

Since the recall was widely perceived as a national referendum on guns, its results were quickly regarded as a significant victory for the NRA and a loss for New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, one of the most vocal proponents of stricter gun laws, and other groups aligned with his anti-gun violence agenda. Conservative outlets, in particular, seized on a comment Giron made a month before the election to The New Republic.

"For Mayors Against Illegal Guns, if they lose even one of these seats, they might as well fold it up. And they understand that," she said.

But while Giron's wounds are still fresh from her loss three days ago, the Pueblo Democrat told The Huffington Post on Friday that her remark was predicated on an election where gun policy would be the decisive issue -- and she strongly believes it was not.

"I'm disappointed that part of this story is going to be that the NRA won, when I don't really think they did ... that is how the message is being spun," Giron said in an interview. "That's disappointing, because if you dig deeper, that wasn't the case here."

Giron pointed to voter suppression tactics on the part of her opponents as one reason her supporters were unable to cast their ballots, an issue that was raised by Democrats leading up to the close of polls.

But the larger advantage to the NRA, according to Giron, was the number of outside groups that jumped at the chance to unseat two vulnerable Democrats. The Koch brothers' involvement through their nonprofit Americans For Prosperity was particularly challenging, as they targeted Giron over clean energy bills and Morse on tax and health care reform. Giron said she and Morse were also attacked over their support for a civil unions bill that passed the state legislature in March.

"Everything's a lot more complicated than it appears," Giron said, noting that the national media only covered the election through the prism of gun control and its implications.

Little coverage beyond local outlets in Colorado paid attention to the onslaught of issues that made the recall no different than any other election, she added.

Asked how anti-gun violence groups move forward, given the optics of the recall, Giron said organizations like Bloomberg's Mayors Against Illegal Guns should continue to focus on convincing lawmakers in Washington to embrace universal background checks.

"Obviously we haven't done very well with that on the federal level, and a tone is certainly set from the top," she said. "The NRA instills fear in lawmakers by positioning itself as a group dedicated to the rights of responsible gun owners, but it really represents gun manufacturers. It's all about the money for them, which comes from manufacturers, not your average gun owner."

"These groups need to pull that curtain off the NRA and expose it for what it really is," Giron added.

When HuffPost asked if she regrets her swing vote on the gun bills earlier this year, Giron dubbed the legislature's session as "historic."

"I wouldn't take back anything that happened and was proud to have been a part of a session where we passed civil unions, provided undocumented immigrants with in-state tuition, and passed a voting bill that will tremendously increase access," she said.

"And with respect to guns, we passed modest, common-sense legislation in a state that was victim to two of the worst tragedies in our country's history," Giron added, referring to the 1999 Columbine school shooting and Aurora massacre last year. "I couldn't in good conscience have voted any other way." Reported by Huffington Post 2 days ago.

Colorado Recall Stifles Stalled Gun Control Efforts

$

WASHINGTON -- Gun control advocates say the National Rifle Association-aided recall of two Colorado legislators who backed new gun restrictions will make it harder to revive stalled efforts in Congress to tighten firearm laws.

Federal legislation expanding background check requirements for gun buyers fell five votes short in the Senate in April, despite political momentum from last December's massacre at a Connecticut elementary school. Gun control backers say they have yet to win a single new Senate supporter, and many worry that the muscle shown by pro-gun groups and voters last week in Colorado will make it even harder to find converts. "The NRA does its job better than our side does our job," said Jim Kessler, a co-founder of Third Way, which advocates for centrist Democratic policies. "They know how to influence and intimidate elected people."

Added Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn.: "The results of the recall were not good news." As a House member last year, Murphy represented Newtown, where 20 first-graders and six school staffers were gunned down.

Minutes after the Senate rejected the new background checks on April 17, President Barack Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., pledged to continue the fight. Democrats and gun control lobbyists, however, don't expect Reid to bring the bill up again until next year at best, not until he has found enough additional votes to have a strong chance of prevailing.

That means the Dec. 14 anniversary of the school shootings probably will pass without a fresh Senate vote. Some gun curb advocates have hoped to use the widespread public attention that anniversary will receive to schedule a new vote by then.

"My advice to Reid is, if there's any indication of change or movement in a positive direction, we should consider it. But so far I've not seen that," said Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., his party's chief Senate vote-counter.

Colorado voters last Tuesday removed two Democratic state lawmakers from office – Senate President John Morse and Sen. Angela Giron – and replaced them with Republicans who are gun-rights supporters.

The two Democrats had supported expanded background checks and limits on ammunition magazines. Colorado enacted those measures following Newtown and a July 2012 rampage in an Aurora, Colo., movie theater that left 12 dead and 70 wounded.

The recall drew national attention and became a proxy fight between gun control and gun rights forces. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, an advocate for stricter gun laws with his group Mayor's Against Illegal Guns, contributed around $350,000 to the two Democrats. The NRA spent roughly the same amount opposing them.

Overall, reported contributions to Morse and Giron totaled around $3 million, giving them a 5-1 advantage over recall supporters. Yet foes of the two state senators found enough angry voters to prevail.

NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam played down his group's role. He noted the overall spending disparity and saying his organization participated only after being asked to by local gun-rights advocates.

"It sends a strong message that grassroots still matters, and voters trump Bloomberg and his money," he said of the vote, echoing a theme the NRA has used before against the wealthy New Yorker.

Mark Glaze, executive director of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, said the NRA "cherry-picked" two vulnerable legislators to target. He said his group's spending in those races underscored its commitment.

"Legislators who take risks to keep the public safe are going to have every resource they'd ask for to defend themselves," he said.

Former Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter, a Democrat, said his state's recall votes meant little for U.S. senators pondering their stance on guns. He said the recall movement tapped into public unease with a broad Democratic agenda "that may have drifted too far to the left," including enactment of civil unions for gay and lesbian couples and in-state tuition for college students in the U.S. illegally.

Murphy and other gun control supporters such as Dan Gross, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, say that with polls showing wide approval of background checks and groups like Bloomberg's spending large sums, the NRA's potency has been weakened.

Even so, Senate talks have proceeded intermittently as supporters of the background check language written by Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Pat Toomey, R-Pa., seek five more votes.

Background checks, aimed at weeding out criminals and the mentally unstable, are required for buyers obtaining firearms through licensed gun dealers. The defeated legislation would have expanded that to sales at commercial venues like gun shows and the Internet.

Participants say they have explored ways to keep the NRA neutral, including exempting gun show sales or letting buyers conduct their own background checks online. Gun control advocates objected that such concessions go too far. Participants spoke on condition of anonymity after agreeing their names wouldn't be attached to discussions of private conversations.

Asked if such changes would keep the NRA on the sidelines, Arulanandam said, "The NRA remains opposed to expanding a broken system on background checks, period."

Four Democrats opposed broadening background checks: Max Baucus of Montana, Mark Begich of Alaska, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota and Mark Pryor of Arkansas. Others opponents wooded by advocates include GOP Sens. Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire and Arizona's Jeff Flake.

Asked if the Colorado recalls made him less likely to switch, Flake said last week, "I was not prone to do so. I'm comfortable where I am." Reported by Huffington Post 2 days ago.

Airlines, Customer Service and the Failure of Technology

$

I am very fortunate that I am able to do the bulk of my work from my home in the Midwest. The commute is great, the cost of living much lower than the east coast (where the Huffington Post is based), and I am afforded a level of flexibility in my work hours that would be hard in an office environment. Alas, there are also some down-sides to working from home, but that is a story for another day.

As my responsibilities have grown, it's become necessary to sometimes travel to the HuffPost mothership in NYC several times a year. There are some things that phone and email communication just cannot replace. I have made about 6 trips to NYC and the DC area this past year and have actually come to enjoy traveling. Unlike many, I have not had any bad experiences with the airlines, until last week that is. Granted, compared to many airline horror stories I have heard, this is pretty much nothing, but based on my stellar experience thus far, it is a big thing for me.

Let me set the stage a little first. I am what the airlines call, "a person of size." As a result, most airlines require me to purchase two coach seats, or a premium (aka First/Business Class) seat. Because I want to be comfortable, I don't want to inconvenience others or make them uncomfortable, and because I am fortunate to have an employer that will pay for it, I follow the rules -- I usually buy first class (one first class seat is usually cheaper than two coach seats, and I get free checked bags).

This past week, I was plagued by the bane of air travelers -- the short layover/connection. I had a mere 30 minutes between flights, based on how our travel desk booked the reservation. Leaving my origin airport, I was told we were 19 minutes behind schedule before we even took off. I just knew I would miss my connection.

During the flight, I spoke with my neighbor across the aisle and the flight attendant about my situation. My neighbor was a frequent flyer with experience at the transfer airport, and gave me some tips. The attendant told me that as long as I was at the departure gate prior to scheduled departure, they had to let me board by FAA regulations. I also checked the status of our flight, and learned that we were now only 7 minutes behind schedule. Hmmm. I have a chance. The connecting airport, in Minneapolis - St. Paul also has customer service carts that circle the airport, and I was hoping I could get a ride, as my departure gate was obviously on the other side of the airport.

I won't detail the fun of getting across the airport (maybe another time), but I arrived at the gate as they were heading to close the door, 5 minutes ahead of departure time. The gate agent held the door for me, but informed me that my seat had been reassigned, and she bumped me to economy. The first class seat that "I" paid for, and they require me to buy had been given away.

Because I didn't want to spend time in a TSA holding room, I kept my mouth shut, was thankful that the seat they gave me (vacated by the man who took my seat) had an empty seat next to it, and that I was on my way home.

I get to my home airport, ready to fight with someone. I talk to the gate agent, who is nothing but pleasant and apologetic, but does not know how to honor my request for a refund of the difference between the seat I paid for and the one I was forced to take (a reasonable request in my mind). A supervisor was summoned.

I relate my story again to the supervisor, who makes a phone call and then tells me there is nothing she can do -- the person who was upgraded to my seat did not pay for the upgrade, so they could not refund my money. After some further protest on my part, she did offer me a voucher for my inconvenience -- $50. I told her it was an insult, took my paperwork and left.

During this exchange, she told me that it was airline policy to open first class seats to eligible upgrade recipients 15 minutes prior to departure if the original ticket holder had not yet arrived. She said that they had no idea if I was coming, so they had to do it.

Considering that both flights were on the same airline (a major air carrier based in Atlanta, GA), on the same reservation/ticket/confirmation code, and that I had checked in both online and at the origin airport for both flights, how was it that they had NO idea about my delayed flight. Let's make this one even better -- my checked bag made it onto the connecting flight with no problem.

Either they knew, and the supervisor was lying to me, or they really don't care about their customers. Why can't their technology point out situations like this so that they can find solutions. I can think of several options that a company concerned about their customers might do in a situation like this:
1. Have the arriving gate agent rebook me on another flight before I try running across the airport.3. Have a customer service cart sitting at my arrival gate to take me to the other one.5. Give me options at the originating airport, since they knew we would be late arriving.
Those are the quick ideas, and I am sure there are many other possibilities. Use the technology you have available to deliver top notch service. The airlines complain that they are losing business and face much stronger competition from other carriers. Why not leverage the technology to set yourself apart. With all the horror stories I hear about flying, an airline going out of their way for their customers would clearly benefit from such an effort.

Leveraging technology to improve peoples lives is not limited to the airlines, or even to customer service in general. Our CTO, John Pavley wrote last year about a simple way that the Aurora theater shooting might have been avoided via technology that already exists in retail marketing.

What ideas do you have for using technology to improve our lives? Reported by Huffington Post 10 hours ago.

LSU Fraternity Apologizes For Offensive Sign Referencing Kent State Shootings

LSU Fraternity Apologizes For Offensive Sign Referencing Kent State Shootings A Louisiana State University fraternity has issued an apology after hanging an offensive sign before the school's football game against Kent State this weekend.

The sign — hung in front of LSU's Delta Kappa Epsilon house — read "Getting Massacred Is Nothing New to Kent St.," a reference to the 1970 campus shooting in which the Ohio National Guard opened fire on around 2,000 student protestors. Four Kent State students were killed and nine were wounded.

A Kent State spokesperson condemned the fraternity's sign, saying, "May 4, 1970 was a watershed moment for the country and especially the Kent State family. We lost four students that day while nine others were wounded and countless others were changed forever. We take offense to the actions of a few people last night who created an inappropriate sign and distracted from the athletic contest on the field."

The DKE chapter issued this apology on Sunday:

We, the men of Zeta Zeta, formally apologize to your entire community for the banner that was hung from our house this past weekend. The sign was inappropriate and should never have been hung in the first place. We hope that the Kent State community can forgive our action and accept our sincere apologies. We apologize not only to the community of Kent State, but also to those who were personally affected by this tragedy in American history. Hanging the banner was a poor attempt at humor.  We, as young college students, did not grasp the full scoop of the tragedy and it's long lasting effects. This is not how we would like to represent our fraternity as well as our school, and we certainly hope we did not put a negative spin on your school's visit to Louisiana State University.

The Kent State sign is hardly the first time this LSU fraternity has created controversy, though. DKE got criticized last year for a sign posted after the Aurora, Colorado shootings that read, "Like The Batman Premiere, We're Starting Off With A Bang!"

The fraternity has also hung signs making inappropriate jokes about other schools LSU played in football:

Mozilla postpones Windows 8 'Metro' Firefox to late January

Mozilla last week said that slower-than-expected progress on Firefox for Microsoft's Windows 8 "Modern" user interface (UI) means that the touch-based browser likely won't launch until late January.

Estimates a month ago by the open-source developer had pegged Dec. 10 as the target release for the "Metro-ized" version of Firefox. Metro was the name Microsoft once applied to the Windows 8 and Windows RT radical UI, but the company ditched the moniker in August 2012 over a trademark dispute with a German retailer.

The Firefox "Preview Release" will still be packaged with the Aurora build of Firefox 26 for the Windows desktop when it launches Tuesday, as originally planned.

"The goal of the Metro Preview Release is to gather feedback and defects from the larger Aurora community," Mozilla said in notes published on its website from a planning meeting last Wednesday. "Whether or not the Metro Preview Release will graduate from Aurora to Beta and Release channels is still to be determined. At a minimum, it should significantly increase the number of testers and feedback."

The New York Times racked up the most nominations for the annual Online Journalism Awards on Monday, scoring eight from the Online News Association.

The Times was a finalist in nearly every category for which it was eligible. Pulitzer-prize winning “Snowfall” was among them, as was its coverage of the 2012 presidential election and Hurricane Sandy.

On the techier side of things, the Times-sponsored open-source Javascript library D3.js was one of the finalists for Technical Innovation in the Service of Digital Journalism.

The ONA singled out journalistic heavy-hitters and small student start-ups for praise. The winners will be named on October 19 at ONA’s annual awards banquet.

Public radio stations also did well: NPR was nominated for General Excellence in Online Journalism and for its presidential election coverage, while stations such as WNYC, Boston’s WBUR and KPCC received nods. As TheWrap previously reported, KPCC has increased its focus on digital journalism in recent years. That push could pay off in the form of an OJA.

The L.A. Times was a finalist in four categories, including Watchdog Journalism, Innovative Investigative Journalism, Topical Reporting and Explanatory Reporting.

Mozilla postpones 'Modern' version of Firefox, again

Mozilla postpones 'Modern' version of Firefox, again Mozilla has confirmed that its Windows 8 'Modern' version of Firefox has been postponed, again, this time until January.

The company had estimated an early December launch for the touch version of the browser, following two prior delays.

A "Preview Release" will still be released on Tuesday along with the alpha build of Firefox 26.

"The goal of the Metro Preview Release is to gather feedback and defects from the larger Aurora community," Mozilla noted. "Whether or not the Metro Preview Release will graduate from Aurora to Beta and Release channels is still to be determined. At a minimum, it should significantly increase the number of testers and feedback."

Mozilla started developing their Modern edition 18 months ago, with a very basic preview released alongside Windows 8 in October 2012. At the time, the company expected the browser to be completed by January 2013. That clearly did not happen.

We've Had So Many Mass Shootings In The U.S., We've Had To Redefine The Term

A heavily armed shooter entered the Navy Yard in Washington on Monday and opened fire, killing at least 12 people before being shot to death by authorities.

The killings brought the horror of mass shootings back into the national spotlight, as President Barack Obama condemned the "cowardly act" and honored the victims during an address.

Monday's violence marked the sixth mass shooting since the one in Newtown, Conn., in December. It was also the first publicly recognized by Obama since the elementary school massacre, which claimed the lives of 27, including 20 children.

There have been six mass shootings over the past nine months -- and at least 20 during Obama's presidency. That may be disturbing. But some would argue even that startling figure grossly underreports the number of shooting sprees.

The growing number of mass killings over the past five years left the country in search of a term that would distinguish mass murder by gun from those using other weapons. Mass shooting has gained favor as the obvious choice. Though the FBI doesn't specifically define mass shooting, it does define mass murder, calling it a single incident in which a perpetrator kills four or more people, not including himself or herself.

The FBI defined mass murder to distinguish it from serial murder. That definition provides the basis for the unofficial definition of mass shooting that has gained use in recent years. Mother Jones explained the definition in an extensive "Guide to Mass Shootings in America," writing that mass shootings typically involve a single episode in a single location, usually a public place. The Mother Jones definition of mass shooting matches the FBI definition of mass murder in that it includes single incidents that kill at least four victims.

Over on Reddit, the Guns Are Cool community has *compiled a list of every mass shooting in the United States this year*. The moderators of the subreddit, which doesn't actually appear to be of the belief that guns are cool, use an expanded definition of mass shooting, listing every event in which "four or more people [including the shooter] are shot in a spree." Under the Reddit definition, a shooting spree that wounds at least four people, but doesn't kill them, is still a mass shooting.

Including Monday's mass shooting, the Reddit list for 2013 is nearing 250 incidents. That's an average of one mass shooting almost every day.

With so many mass shootings, even those that fit the frequently used definition rarely prompt a presidential response. Perhaps it's not surprising that many of the violent acts cataloged by Reddit escape national attention.

*Below, the 20-plus mass shootings that have made waves on a national scale during Obama's presidency, including the few that have been mentioned by the president himself.*

*Sept. 16, 2013 -- Washington -- At least 12 dead (including gunman)*

A man identified as Aaron Alexis, 34, opened fire at the Navy Yard on Monday, gunning down at least 12 before being killed by authorities.

Obama addressed the incident in a live address later in the day.

"So we are confronting yet another mass shooting and today it happened on a military installation in our nation's capital," he said.

Speaking of the victims, he added: "These are men and women who were going to work, doing their job, protecting all of us. They are patriots and they know the dangers of serving abroad, but today they faced unimaginable violence that they wouldn’t have expected here at home."

*Dec. 14, 2012 -- Newtown, Conn. -- 27 dead (including gunman)*

The shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary was the second-deadliest school shooting in U.S. history, leaving 27 dead -- including 20 young children.

President Obama gave an emotional address, calling for "meaningful action":As a country we have been through this too many times. Whether it is an elementary school in Newtown, or a shopping mall in Oregon, or a temple in Wisconsin, or a movie theater in Aurora, or a street corner in Chicago -- these neighborhoods are our neighborhoods, and these children are our children. We're going to have to come together to meaningful action on this, regardless of the politics.

White supremacist Wade Michael Page entered a Sikh Temple, opening fire on congregants. He later shot and injured a police officer responding to the scene.

Presidential reaction:Michelle and I were deeply saddened to learn of the shooting that tragically took so many lives in Wisconsin. At this difficult time, the people of Oak Creek must know that the American people have them in our thoughts and prayers, and our hearts go out to the families and friends of those who were killed and wounded.

My Administration will provide whatever support is necessary to the officials who are responding to this tragic shooting and moving forward with an investigation. As we mourn this loss which took place at a house of worship, we are reminded how much our country has been enriched by Sikhs, who are a part of our broader American family.

During a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises," a gunman opened fire on the suburban Denver movie theater, killing 12 and injuring dozens of others.

Two days later, Obama delivered a ten-minute speech from the University of Colorado that made no mention of gun control:God bless all who helped to respond to this tragedy. And I hope that over the next several days, next several weeks, and next several months, we all reflect on how we can do something about some of the senseless violence that ends up marring this country, but also reflect on all the wonderful people who make this the greatest country on Earth.

Two months later, Obama addressed gun control issues in an op-ed for the Arizona Daily Star:I know that every time we try to talk about guns, it can reinforce stark divides. People shout at one another, which makes it impossible to listen. We mire ourselves in stalemate, which makes it impossible to get to where we need to go as a country. However, I believe that if common sense prevails, we can get beyond wedge issues and stale political debates to find a sensible, intelligent way to make the United States of America a safer, stronger place.
