Jewel-Osco to close 3 stores by April

Jewel-Osco plans to close three stores in Aurora, Niles and Chicago by April 5. Jewel has decided not to renew the leases of its stores at at 1270 N. Lake St., Aurora, which will close Feb.15.; 8203 W. Golf Rd. in Niles, closing April 5; and 3940 E. 106th St., Chicago, which will also will close April 5, a company spokeswoman told the Chicago Tribune. Linebacker Caleb Bailey will attend Western Michigan University on a full scholarship following a season in which he earned All State Honorable Mention. The 6-1, 215 pounder registered 105 tackles last fall.

*Car break-in:* Around 8 p.m., a car break-in was reported at the 20100 block of Auurar Ave. N. The unknown suspect broke a car window and took bags from the front seat while the victim was in a local business.

*Assault at Goldie's Casino:* Police received a report of fourth degree assault around 9:45 p.m. The victim and suspect had been arguing.

Saturday, Jan. 26

*Residential Burglary:* A resident of the 18900 block of 16th Ave. NE reported a burglary, after someone climbed through an unsecured kitchen window.

Sunday, Jan. 27

*Trespass at Ronna's Adult Video:* Around midnight on Jan. 27, a person was ejected by police from Ronna's Adult Video on Aurora for causing a disturbance.

*Music equipment stolen:* A car parked at a home on the 1000 block of NE 188th Street was broken into and mucal equipment and other items stolen. The unknown suspect jimmied the lock, according to police.

*Mystery T-shirt:* A Shoreline couple reported to police that they found a T-shirt in their bed, which didn't belong to either of them. The police report asks, was it a possible burlglar, or "other?"

Monday, Jan. 28

*Diamond might really be woman's best friend:* A Shoreline resident reported that after friends visited her at the Arabella Apartments, her diamond ring was missing from her bathroom.

*Missing iPads at Shorewood High:* Police took two reports of an iPad taken from a students' backpacks on the same day.

*Stolen car recovered:* A vehicle that had been reported stolen was found on 9th Ave. NE and NE 180th, with a flat tire and the front passenger door open.

*Indecent exposure:* A man entered the Nail Code on NE 179th Street with his pants down exposing his genitals to employees and customers.

*Public computer stolen from Safeway:* The bookkeeper at the Safeway at 15322 Aurora Ave. N. reported to police that someone had cut the security cable of a laptop kept near the door for public use and taken it.

Flashes Pick Up 21 Recruits on National Signing Day Patch Kent, OH --

There will be 21 new faces on the Kent State football team next season.

The Golden Flashes announced Wednesday they signed 21 recruits on National Signing Day, according to the athletics department.

The recruits, all receiving scholarships, are the first for new Head Coach Paul Haynes, who was hired after Darrell Hazell announced he was leaving for Purdue in December.

According to the athletic department, the average grade-point average of the players is a 3.16 and all but one served as team captains in high school.

Kent State's recruiting class was ranked No. 103 by Rivals.com.

""We looked for players that wanted to come in and compete for a spot right away," Haynes said in Wednesday's press conference.  "We wanted to get our kind of guys.  And that's what we got."

Stolen car involved in crash

A 2010 Chevrolet Camaro was stolen from a Naperville garage, then involved in a crash, according to police. The vehicle was stolen from the 2600 block of Champion Road about 2:30 a.m. Jan. 28 then crashed near North Aurora and Eola roads in Aurora. Police say they found the vehicle abandoned, but containing stolen goods from other burglaries. Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest. Nine companies are reportedly preparing for nearly 1,200 layoffs throughout Illinois, including Walgreens, Sun-Times Media and a Naperville Kmart, according to Crain's Chicago Business.

Kmart, part of Hoffman Estates-based Sears Holdings Corp., plans to lay off 98 employees when it closes its Naperville store in the spring. The store, located at 1199 E. Ogden Ave., could close as early as late March, reported Crain's.

Employees at Deerfield-based Walgreens will face layoffs as well. The company will reportedly lay off 65 warehouse workers in west suburban Berkeley, reported Crain's.

Walgreens has nearly a dozen locations throughout Naperville. 

Sun-Times Media, publisher of the Chicago Sun-Times, Naperville Sun, Beacon News and other suburban papers, warns that 274 jobs in Glenview, Tinley Park and Aurora could be eliminated due to consolidation.

Sun-Times announced plans in December to close the Naperville Sun and Beacon News newspaper office in Aurora to "eliminate inefficiencies" in Sun-Times Media.

News of the layoffs comes less than a week after Naperville-based Tellabs announced plans to cut about 300 jobs this year. Reported by Patch 1 hour ago.

*Feb. 6 *Carol S. Parker, 72, of the 400 block of Treasure Drive, Oswego, was arrested at 9:32 p.m. at Adams Street and Washington and charged with driving under the influence with a blood alcohol level greater than .08 and improper lane usage, said Oswego police.

*Feb. 2 *Ryan A. Uher, 27, of the 4300 block of Dobbins Street, Plano, was arrested at 3:30 a.m. at Nottingham Court and Nottingham Drive and charged with driving under the influence, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and leaving the scene of an accident, said Oswego police.

*Feb. 1 *David Pacyga, 39, of the 0-99 block of Ceboud, Montgomery, was arrested at 9:01 p.m. at Brockway and Northampton and charged with driving under the influence and improper lane usage that resulted in an accident, said Oswego police.

Two people were nabbed for driving under the influence of alcohol Feb. 2, Montgomerypolice said.

· Mark Talley, 35, of the 1100 block of Garfield Avenue, Aurora, was arrested at 12:02 a.m. at Montgomery Road and Howell after the vehicle he was driving rear-ended another vehicle, police said. Reports state no one was injured in the accident.

· Olzaneth Juarez, 21, of the 3200 block of Julie Lane, Montgomery, was arrested for DUI after the vehicle she was driving crossed over the center line striking another vehicle head-on at 3:45 a.m. at Route 30 and Griffin, police said. Reports state the driver of the second vehicle was transported to Rush Copley Hospital with non-life threating injuries.

*Feb. 4 *James D. Peters, 50, of the 6N200 block of Woodland Drive, Saint Charles, was arrested at 10:27 p.m. in the 10800 block of Route 71 and charged with driving under the influence and speeding, said the Kendall County Sheriff's Office. Sheriff’s deputies initiated a traffic stop upon seeing a vehicle speeding at 105 MPH in a 55 MPH speed zone on Route 71 near Legion Road. Peters was arrested for driving under the influence and for speeding 40 MPH or more over the posted speed limit.

*Feb. 1 *David Saltijeral Jr., 22, of the 300 block of Twinleaf Trail, Yorkville was arrested at 6:06 p.m. at Oak Street and Cannon Ball Trail, Bristol and charged for driving under the influence, said the Kendall County Sheriff’s office. Deputies received reports of an apparently intoxicated person driving southbound on Cannonball Trail in a northbound lane. Deputies also discovered Saltijeral had damaged a pedestrian crossing sign and was also cited for improper lane usage and no proof of insurance, according to reports.

A woman reported on Feb. 5 that someone had placed a used condom on her apartment door handle in the 200 block of East Bailey Road, police said.

GLEN ELLYN

*Indecent, Underage and Intoxicated*

Michael P. Dieterle, 20, of the 1300 block of East Elm Street, Wheaton, was arrested at 2:43 a.m. Jan. 27 in the 300 block of Alder Lane, police said. He was charged with public intoxication, illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor and public indecency.

*Pricey Thefts*

· Police said someone entered the Smoker Shop, 434 Roosevelt Road, between 1 p.m. and 7:35 p.m. Feb. 1 and stole various items valued at less than $300.

· Someone on Jan. 28 stole a “No Outlet” sign from the intersection at Illinois Street and Hillcrest Avenue, police said. The sign was valued at less than $500.

ST. CHARLES

*Locked Out, Then Locked Up*

Steven J. Michalak, 42, of the 5N200 block of Hanson Road, called police at 12:24 a.m. Jan. 31 to request assistance. He was at XSport Fitness, 238 N. Randall Road, and the locks to his car doors had frozen.

Police showed up within minutes to offer their help. They had to verify that Michalak indeed was the owner of the 1997 Nissan that was frozen shut, so they did a check through their computer. They learned then that Michalak was wanted on a DuPage County warrant for contempt of court. Police arrested him at 1:05 a.m.

Michalak was unable to post bail and was transported to the DuPage County Jail to await a court appearance. Police said they were unable to help Michalak gain entry into his car.

GENEVA

*You Spin Me Right Round*

The driver of a Hyundai Sonata got a scare earlier this week but was not injured after a snowplow hit her car hard enough to spin it around in the west parking lot of Delnor Hospital, according to Geneva police reports.

A New Holland 55441 skid steer with an affixed loader driven by a 39-year-old Aurora man collided with the front of the Sonata, driven by a 52-year-old woman from DeKalb. The incident occurred around 8:12 a.m. Feb. 4 in the hospital parking lot, 300 South Randall Road, reports said.

More than $1,500 of damage was done to the Hyundai, and a tow was needed after the crash. No damage was reported to the skid steer.

According to reports, the man was westbound, plowing snow out of the west parking lot of the hospital when his skid steer hit the Sonata, which was southbound in a traffic lane.

The impact sent the Sonata into a half spin, where it rested facing southwest in a parking stall, reports said. Both drivers told police they did not see each other prior to impact.

Sun-Times Media, publisher of the Chicago Sun-Times and suburban papers including the Naperville Sun, The Beacon-News in Aurora and Courier-News in Elgin, warns that 274 jobs in Glenview, Tinley Park and Aurora could be eliminated due to consolidation.

The Best Buy Co. closing will be near the Old Orchard shopping plaza. But the company closed six Chicago-area stores last year and 50 nationwide.

Last year, the struggling electronics big-box chain shuttered six stores in metro Chicago as part of a larger plan to close 50 big stores nationwide. Best Buy is looking to open 100 smaller “mobile” stores, including 10 in the Chicago suburbs, Crain's reports.

Man Airlifted After SUV Hits Utility Pole on Route 25 Sunday Afternoon Patch Batavia, IL --

One man was airlifted to a hospital after a one-car crash Sunday afternoon on Route 25 south of Batavia, fire officials said.

The crash occurred at the Red Oak Nature Center entrance on the 2300 block of South River Road (Route 25). Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene at about 2:50 p.m., said Mike Klemencic, a North Aurora fire captain.

The man was taken by helicopter to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. His condition and identity were not immediately available.

A midsize or crossover sport utility-type vehicle was northbound on Route 25 when it struck a pole on the passenger side, Klemencic said.

"The car went through the utility pole sideways and completely took it out," Klemencic said. "(The vehicle) went about 60 feet. It ended up in the parking lot in the Red Oak Nature Center. Right now the accident's under investigation with the police."

The man that was transported was a passenger in the vehicle. The driver did not require transport, according to the fire department.

The crash shut down Route 25 south of Batavia for several hours between Ridge and Banbury roads. Crash investigators were at the scene during the closure. It was raining during the crash, Klemencic said.

"Please avoid the area of Rt. 25, north of Butterfield (Rt. 56) ... due to a serious traffic accident," an advisory message from North Aurora police said. The message was released at 4:09 p.m. Sunday.

Injuries were reported and a medical helicopter was requested to the scene, according to scanner reports at about 2:55 p.m. The car had to be towed after the crash.

Further information on the crash was not immediately available. Patch will post an update if any other details are released.

This was the second crash reported on Sunday that involved a vehicle striking a utility pole. The first crash occurred on the 1400 block of Main Street in Batavia at 11:27 a.m. Reported by Patch 20 hours ago.

'Dark Knight' Weapons Suspect Trial Begins Today Patch Westlake, OH --

Scott Smith, the man caught carrying a Glock 9mm semi-automatic pistol, 4 knives, and various medical supplies into a Westlake theater Aug. 4, 2012 is scheduled for trial at 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 10 in the Cuyahoga Court of Common Pleas.

Smith, of North Ridgeville, entered the Regal Cinemas in Westlake carrying a Maxpedition bag, which is commonly used to transport firearms.

An off-duty officer inside the theater noticed the suspect carrying the bag and followed him into the I-Max Theater which was showing the movie Batman.

Once inside the theater, the officer approached Smith and requested to see the bag he had in his possession. A search of the suspects bag revealed the weapons and supplies. Smith was then placed under arrest.

Smith's lawyer claimed the weapons were for self-defense.

He was charged with Having Weapons Under Disability, a third degree felony; one charge of Carrying A Concealed Weapon, a felony; and Carrying A Concealed Weapon (misdemeanor).

The incident came on the heels of the July 20, 2012 shooting in Aurora, CO that left 12 dead and dozens injured.

Area Students to Perform 'Beauty and the Beast Jr.' Patch Montgomery, IL --

The Spotlight Youth Theater, featuring actors ages 8- to 18-years-old, will perform "Beauty and the Beast Jr." Feb. 22- March 3 at Oswego East High School, 1525 Harvey Road.

The stage production is based on the Academy Award winning animated film and features a cast of over 100 area children, said Wendy Spencer, marketing director for Spotlight in Aurora.

"Beauty and the Beast Jr." features the songs made famous in both the film and Broadway version, including "Human Again" and "Be Our Guest."
