Daniel Beaty: 11 Ways to Transform Your Grief to Action and Respond Powerfully to the Verdict

*1) See the Possibility and Not Just the Pain:* Could this be the birth of a movement? There is an absolute urgency of issues facing our young people and our nation. How can the life of Trayvon and all the young people we have lost from Harlem to Newtown to Chicago to Aurora truly matter? How can we mobilize around issues of gun control, violence in our urban centers, America's need for healing around race past and present, the prison industrial complex, stop and frisk, poverty, homeless, and so on and so on? The movement we are embarking on is a Humans Rights Movement -- all people regardless of race, sex, class, or sexuality must have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

*2) March and Take A Young Person with You:* around the country peaceful protests are emerging. Help our young people to understand the connection between our past and our present. We march to make our presence known and our voices heard.

*3) Volunteer for a Youth Empowering Organization in Your Community: * the harvest is plenty but the laborers are few. Right in your neighborhood there are organizations working to serve youth who can benefit from your time and talent.

*4) Text JUSTICE to 62227* to demand the Department of Justice addresses this tragedy by filing a civil rights violation against Zimmerman or sign the petition at moveon.org

*5) Support Media that Positively Displays the Humanity of Black Men and Boys:* the perception of black men and boys as violent and angry without context or full humanity is at the root of so much of this conversation. Immediate Action Step: Go see Fruitvale Station - it is powerful and painful film. Sometimes there is power in pain if it mobilizes us to ACT.

*6) Mentor a Young Person:* make a commitment to be a present, empowering adult in the life of a young person in your community. A loving and consistent adult can be a lifesaver -- literally.

*7) Make Heroes Out of the Powerful, Loving, Present Black Men and Boys in Your Lives:* rather he is a janitor or a doctor or a student or a teacher affirm and love a black man or boy in your life. Media does a great job making heroes out of athletes, movie stars, and rappers. How can we begin to make heroes out of the everyday, loving, present, achieving black men and boys in our communities?

*8) Turn Off the BS:* Stop watching and listening to media that downgrades us and participates in our own destruction. Each time we watch a TV program or support a recording "artist" that perpetuates the lowest, basest aspects of our dysfunction we co-sign to the limiting perception others have of us and too many of us have of ourselves.

*9) Make a Renewed Commitment to Your Purpose:* what dream have you been suffocating with your doubts, fears, and insecurities? It is time to give your purpose breath. When you live fully in your purpose you inspire purpose in others.

*10) Vote:* we must change laws like Stand Your Ground and Stop & Frisk that do not serve us. We must vote out politicians that BS and do not represent our interest, and support those who will get the work done. Research and learn what your representatives are standing for and what the laws truly mean.

*11) Know and Affirm the Truth of Who Are Young People Are:* too often in churches, at conferences, or at the dinner table, we speak about this generation of young people with such disparaging, harsh words. We have dropped them. We have failed to tell the story of our history and set appropriate boundaries. Now we must do the heavy lifting of helping to pick them up and tell them the truth of who we are -- and of who they are. Our young people are not lost. They are more beautiful and powerful then they can even imagine. We must help them to know this truth. Reported by Huffington Post 3 days ago.

Alex Teves' Parents Challenge The Media To Stop Using Shooter's Name

Nearly one year after the Aurora shooting, the parents of one of the 12 who were killed during the midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" say they're challenging the media to stop using the shooter's name and image.

They're calling it "The Alex Teves Challenge," and the goal is to start the end of the glorification of mass murderers.

"The whole premise of the challenge was to take the notoriety away from people who commit acts of violence, to not give them an outlet that maybe they seek," Alex's mother, Caren Teves told 9News.

"You guys needs to be responsible for what you do," said Tom Teves. "You guys could change overnight. All you have to do is have the courage to stop."

The challenge comes with six major points asking the media to write about mass tragedies more responsibly:

· By witholding the name and images of the suspect
· Acknowledging "that the prospect of infamy" could inspire others to commit similar crimes
· Focusing coverage on "specific details of the act, alleged assailant’s background, and possible motivations" rather than the assailant's image or name, which the Teves argue is irrelevant
· Raising awareness of the cause of the act as a preventative measure
· To only publish the assailant's name and image if they are still at large, and to stop upon his or her capture
· And to "agree to promote data and analysis from experts in mental health, public safety, and other relevant professions, where this will support further steps in the elimination of this type of criminal behavior."

Alex Teves was the Teves' oldest son, and he reportedly loved the superhero genre highlighting good vs. evil.

"If you want to describe Alex in one word, he was just good," his father, Tom Teves told CNN.

And he also liked a good Colorado craft beer, his parents say.

On Saturday night, the one-year anniversary of the shooting, the Copper Kettle Brewery -- along with 11 other area breweries, 4 food trucks and 2 bands -- will host "A Night To Remember" for $40, with all proceeds benefiting the Alexander C. Teves (ACT) Foundation and Phoenix 999, a group created by survivors of the Columbine shooting in the wake of the Aurora shooting. Teves was Brew Club member No. 28 of the Copper Kettle's 50-person mug club, and an image of him raising that mug hangs permanently in the Copper Kettle. Reported by Huffington Post 15 hours ago.

Gun Group to Hold Rally in Aurora on Anniversary of Theater Shooting

Gun Group to Hold Rally in Aurora on Anniversary of Theater Shooting A Colorado gun group is planning a rally in Aurora on the first anniversary of the theater shooting which killed 12 people and injured 70 more.

Executive director of Rocky Mountain Gun Owners Dudley Brown says the event is a counter-rally in opposition to the Mayors Against Illegal Guns event being held this Friday – at the same time, in the same park.

"We'll be answering Mayor Bloomberg," Brown said.

Mayors Against Illegal Guns, which includes New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, is holding an event in remembrance of those killed on July 20, 2012, as a screening of “The Dark Night Rises.” Survivors and families of those who died will address the attendees. They will read the names of victims and then hold a moment of silence at 12:38 a.m. Saturday, when the gunman opened fire at the Century Aurora 16.

"It's an opportunity for the community to come together and remember the 12 who were killed and 70 others injured," Mayors Against Illegal Guns outreach and policy associate Stephen Barton told the Denver Post.

“Rocky Mountain Gun Owners is attending this event to show Bloomberg that his radical east coast anti-gun agenda is not supported by Coloradans,” said Danielle Thompson, a spokeswoman for the National Association for Gun Rights, who also helps the Rocky Mountain Gun Owners group with media.

Mayors Against Illegal Guns has supports gun control measures, including limiting the capacity of magazines and outlawing semi-automatic weapons.

The lone suspect in the Aurora shooting, James Eagan Holmes, pleaded not guilty in March to 24 counts of first-degree murder, 116 counts of attempted murder, possession of explosive devices, and inciting violence. The motive for the shooting is unclear.

Ten movie-goers were killed at the scene, and two later died in local hospitals. The oldest victim was 32; the youngest, Veronica Moser-Sullivan, was just six years old.
