Ohio revenge porn bill could protect human dignity, priest says

$

Cincinnati, Ohio, Mar 2, 2018 / 03:15 am (CNA/EWTN News).- An Ohio priest praised a proposed state law to criminalize the nonconsensual publishing of sexual videos or photos, known as “revenge porn.”

Monsignor John Zuraw, chancellor of the Diocese of Youngstown, Ohio, told CNA that he believes the legislation would help protect the dignity of Ohio’s residents.

“When we look at that idea of what porn is all about, porn promotes harmful and destructive views of the human person,” said Monsignor Ziraw. “Revenge porn laws protect the dignity of the human person.”

Revenge porn is when an ex-romantic partner – or a hacker – posts sexual videos or photos of a person without their consent.

More than 30 states currently have laws against revenge porn, but Ohio only prosecutes the posting of pornography featuring underage children, or pornography used as blackmail. The state currently does not penalize a person for simply distributing non-consensual pornography.

Introduced to the Ohio Senate on January 25, the bill was sponsored by Senator Joe Schiavoni, who had unsuccessfully introduced similar legislation in 2016. The bill has now gained support from members of the Aurora police force, including Chief Bryan Byard and Detective Sgt. Dan Kalk.

The bill would provide “compensatory and punitive damages for harm resulting from the violation” and a “temporary restraining order prohibiting further dissemination of the image.”

According to Record-Courier, Detective Kalk, who is also an attorney, helped craft the bill after Aurora authorities struggled to find a charge for alleged offenders of revenge porn.

He said the bill would help clarify which jurisdiction should investigate or prosecute a specific crime, which can be unclear if a perpetrator is in a different city from where the victim lives.

Additionally, he said the legislation would forbid employers and universities from discriminating against victims.

Monsignor Zuraw explained that all pornography “debases the human person,” but said that revenge porn adds an additional dimension of harm.

“When we move into…revenge porn, there are two aspects there: it is the pornography that promotes harmful and destructive views of the human person, but then that whole aspect of revenge that I’m getting back at you because you didn’t do what you should be doing for me.”

Monsignor Zuraw emphasized that human sexuality is an extension of God’s goodness, but must be seen in the context of God’s creation.

“When God created each every one of us, he created our sexuality as an aspect of what is good. We should never lose sight of what God has created and ultimately what is good is to benefit us in ways that are not selfish.”

Hybrid Kinetic Group HK GT: elongated two-door design previewed

New concept will feature elongated passenger doors

Italian design house Pininfarina has produced this shape for a Hong Kong car company; it will be revealed at the Geneva motor show

Pininfarina has designed a coupé concept called the HK GT for Hong Kong-based Hybrid Kinetic Group (HKG) that features a unique body with elongated doors.

As shown by the third preview image to be released ahead of the Geneva motor show, the car has two doors but they span the length of two seat rows.

HKG has confirmed that the four-seater model uses its electric powertrain technology, with a micro-turbine generator acting as a range extender. No statistics have been revealed but this technology was featured in HKG’s K550 and K750 SUVs and H600 saloon, which were revealed in concept forms last year with the promise of 621-mile-range battery packs with 50,000-charge-cycle lifespans.

Given its more sporting focus, the GT is expected to trade some ultimate range for added performance.

HKG's 2017 concepts were said to produce over 800bhp from their electric motors, with the saloon claimed to take 2.9sec to get from 0-60mph. The GT could therefore beat those numbers and become a threat to Tesla’s quickest Model S, the P100D, which covers the sprint in 2.4sec.

Pininfarina’s designers have applied what the company calls Italian “classic architecture” to the exterior, while also continuing the design language first seen on HKG's 2017 concepts. Those cars featured large front grilles that extended into slim headlights, meaning the GT will almost certainly feature that.

Such a technique of ‘Russian doll design’ is common practice for new brands trying to create a clear image that makes their models instantly recognisable. All four of HKG’s concept models are due to be displayed at the Geneva motor show, where the GT will make its public debut.

HKG and Pininfarina have been working together in a technical collaboration worth £55 million. Among the Hong Kong company's existing portfolio is an electric bus and a car that can be fuelled with bio-alcohol, propane and natural gas.

Public Access TV - Street Safari

Public Access TV - Street Safari A mixed but often inspired return from the New Yorkers...

As our minds wither with the lack of vitamin D and seasonal depression, *Public Access TV’s* sophomore offers some desperately needed sunshine tinted disco chords to make it to spring.

'Street Safari' opens with greasy guitar hooks, soon to be framed by the flamboyant basslines that are go to define the release. Opener ‘Safari (In My Head)’ in many ways sums up what to expect from the record: the 70’s tinged melody and experimental flair shows off 'Street Safari’s expansive palette, and perhaps the band’s new flow.

Seizing momentum with their subtly changing soundscape and soulful lyrics, Public Access TV have grown into themselves. The New Yorkers’ new wave mantras are almost underwhelming in their effortlessness. The initial swagger and sleekness stay intact through the eleven tracks of the release.

Though the groove remains, it wears a little thin. The firm foundation of the songs can be, at times, a little monotonous, a listening experience that not even the more jazzy guitar work can save. That being said, the band still oozes of swanky confidence. An ability to revitalise nostalgia, contextualised in the climate of the current day and age is what really distinguish Public Access TV from the backdrop of New York guitar bands.

Throughout 'Street Safari', Public Access TV shows off their many musical skills, their love for throwbacks, and most of all their ability to create joyous fun out of cliché lyrical lines and glossy hooks. Closing with hazy gem ‘The Quicksand’ Public Access TV show the peak of their magic, culminating in a bass-heavy swooning misty melody, a layered marvel that sets the perfect punctuation to disco adventure.

From Genes and Cells to Saving Lives: NEJM Reports Positive Results for Larotrectinib against TRK-fusion Cancers

Basic science from University of Colorado Cancer Center leads to clinical trial results reported in New England Journal of Medicine: Of 55 patients with TRK-fusion cancer who progressed after standard-of-care treatment, 44 responded to larotrectinib, with 38 remaining on the trial or receiving surgery with curative intent at median 9.4 month follow-up.

AURORA, Colo. (PRWEB) February 22, 2018

In 2013, the labs of University of Colorado Cancer Center investigator Robert C. Doebele, MD, PhD, and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute investigator Pasi A. Jänne, MD, PhD reported in Nature Medicine the presence of TRK gene fusions as oncogenic drivers in patient samples of non-small cell lung cancer. Now five years later, the New England Journal of Medicine has published results of three early studies of the drug larotrectinib (formerly LOXO-101) to treat advanced-stage cancer patients whose tumors harbor these TRK fusion genes.

“The story of this drug demonstrates a new paradigm in anti-cancer drug development. We have discovery and validation of a new oncogenic driver, creation of an assay to find which cancers harbor TRK fusions, drug design and preclinical testing, and now academia-industry partnership that produces very promising clinical results,” says Doebele, director of the CU Cancer Center Thoracic Oncology Research Initiative and co-author of the current study.

The three clinical trials looked for TRK fusion genes in patients whose cancers had progressed after standard-of-care treatment (a phase 1 study involving adults, a phase 1–2 study involving children, and a phase 2 study involving adolescents and adults). Overall, 55 patients ranging in age from 4 months to 76 years, representing 17 cancer types, tested positive for TRK fusion and were treated with larotrectinib. Overall response rate was 75 percent (44 of 55 patients). At a median follow-up of 9.4 months, 86 percent of the patients with a response (38 of 44 patients) were continuing treatment or had undergone surgery that was intended to be curative. No patients discontinued treatment due to adverse side-effects.

“This study also demonstrates the shift from defining cancers by the site at which they occur toward defining them by the molecular changes that drive their growth,” Doebele says. “In terms of treatment, these trials show that rather than seeing these as ‘lung’ or ‘colorectal’ or other site-specific cancers, we can think of these as ‘TRK-fusion cancers’ and treat them according to this driver.”

Larotrectinib is one in a class of drugs known as tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), that block the action of target genes. Previously approved TKIs including crizotinib and alectinib inhibit the action of oncogenic genes ALK and ROS1. Larotrectinib uses a similar strategy to inhibit the gene TRK, which is active during early embryonic development, should remain silent in adult cells, but can be improperly reactivated by fusion with partner genes. Doebele and colleagues originally received the drug for study from Array BioPharma of Boulder, CO, and have developed it in partnership with Loxo Oncology of Stamford, CT.

“I can’t tell you how gratifying it is to see our early lab work with genes and cells leading to a treatment that is literally saving patients’ lives,” Doebele says. “This is the dream of all scientists who choose to go into cancer research.”

Due to the durability of responses to larotrectinib, the current studies will continue to follow patients to determine how long the drug is expected to control TRK-fusion cancer. Future studies are planned. Reported by PRWeb 1 week ago.
