The Ports of Indiana handled 11.8 million tons in 2017, resulting in a 5 percent increase from 2016 and the second-highest annual shipment total in the organization’s 57-year history.

INDIANAPOLIS (PRWEB) February 14, 2018

The Ports of Indiana handled 11.8 million tons in 2017, resulting in a 5 percent increase from 2016 and the second-highest annual shipment total in the organization’s 57-year history. This was the fourth-consecutive year that the Ports of Indiana handled over 10 million tons of cargo, the only four years this has been accomplished. The ports’ average annual shipments in 2014-2017 totaled over 45 million tons, exceeding the previous four-year average by nearly 50 percent.

Major cargo increases for the Ports of Indiana in 2017 included coal (+9%), steel (+14%), fertilizer (+14%), ethanol (+14%), limestone (+26%), and minerals (+28%). Shipments of heavy lift and project cargoes, such as wind turbines, laboratory equipment and mega storage tanks, had a 27 percent increase.

“Ports of Indiana experienced a historic year and we look forward to extending our growth spurt in 2018,” said Ports of Indiana CEO Rich Cooper. “The arrival of world-class companies like Metro Ports and POSCO Steel in 2017, combined with unprecedented shipping levels at Mount Vernon and the development of major expansions at Jeffersonville and Burns Harbor, have the Ports of Indiana well positioned to help drive long-term future growth of Indiana businesses and our state economy.”· On Lake Michigan, the Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor handled 2.8 million tons in 2017 completing the highest three-year total in the port’s history. Steel shipments were up 38 percent and large-dimensional cargoes increased nearly 27 percent, including the most valuable shipment ever to pass through Indiana’s ports – ICARUS – the world’s largest liquid argon particle hunter which was handled in July 2017. The instrument was shipped through the port in two semi-truck sized containers from Switzerland to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) in Batavia, Ill. Also in July, the country’s oldest stevedoring company – Metro Ports – became the new bulk terminal operator and immediately doubled the size of the port’s bulk terminal.

· On the Ohio River, the Port of Indiana-Mount Vernon handled 6.8 million tons in 2017, which is 7 percent higher than the previous year and over 200,000 tons more than the port’s previous record set in 2015. Key drivers of the record shipments included increases in coal (+9%), ethanol (+24%), fertilizer (+41%) and minerals (+28%). The port shipped just under 20 million tons over the past three years, which is a 60 percent increase of the previous three years. The port also handled more cargo in December than any other month in port history, exceeding the previous high set in October 2016.

· The Port of Indiana-Jeffersonville handled 2.2 million tons in consecutive years and completed a four-year average that is 60 percent higher than the previous four years. Fertilizer, grain and steel were the largest volume cargoes, making up about 90 percent of the port’s barge shipments moving up and down the Ohio River. In September 2017, POSCO, the fifth largest steel producer in the world, opened its new plant at the port. POSCO is a multinational company that ranks among Fortune’s top 250 companies and was recently named the ‘World’s Most Competitive Steelmaker’ for the eighth consecutive year by the globally-renowned steel information service provider, World Steel Dynamics.

Major port expansions are also being planned at the Jeffersonville and Burns Harbor facilities, supported by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s TIGER and FASTLANE grant programs. In 2017, Burns Harbor earned one of only 10 small project grants in the country awarded through the FASTLANE program. The approximately $20 million expansion will be developed over the next few years and include the construction of two rail yards, a new shipping berth, a truck marshalling yard, 1,200 foot expansion of a cargo dock and a new cargo terminal with multimodal connections for handling cargo transfers between ships, barges, rail cars, and trucks. Planning for a $17 million expansion at Jeffersonville was conducted in 2017 and construction will start in 2018 on the first phases of the project which will eventually include major rail extensions, a unit train rail siding, a bulk terminal and a new transmodal facility.

“Investing in our infrastructure is critical to the ports’ ongoing growth,” said Ports of Indiana Vice President Jody Peacock. “Developing new cargo terminals, unit train capabilities and intermodal facilities are required to maintain a modern port system that provides our customers with access to global markets and a sustainable competitive advantage. All three of our ports also became ‘fiber ready’ in 2017, and we’re continuing to look for ways our ports can add value for existing businesses and attract new multimodal companies to Indiana.”

The Ports of Indiana is also exploring the opportunity to expand its three-port system by adding a new port in southeast Indiana, inside the Cincinnati metropolitan area. In 2017, the Ports of Indiana entered into an agreement to purchase up to 725 acres of land along the Ohio River in Lawrenceburg and Aurora, Ind., as the potential home of a fourth state port. More than 80 percent of the original land purchase to build Indiana’s ports has been developed and the state has not opened a port since 1985. The Ports of Indiana will be conducting due diligence on the site throughout 2018.

About the Ports of Indiana: The Ports of Indiana is a statewide port authority managing three ports on the Ohio River and Lake Michigan. Colorado Visiting Nurse Association Partners with Health Recovery Solutions to reduce hospital readmissions for heart failure patients through a pilot telemedicine program

DENVER (PRWEB) February 15, 2018

In October 2017, Colorado Visiting Nurse Association’s (VNA) partnered with innovative telehealth company, Health Recovery Solutions (HRS), to launch a pilot intervention program for adults living with heart failure.

Individuals with heart disease have a national average 30-day readmission rate of 24%.[1] Colorado VNA is hoping to significantly reduce this rate for their home health heart failure clients with the use of remote monitoring technology through HRS’ telehealth software.

Colorado VNA clients placed on telemedicine are provided with 4G tablets pre-loaded with the HRS software. The tablets are paired with Bluetooth biometric devices which allow patients to take their blood pressure, weight, heart rate, and more. The HRS software provides patients with daily reminders to take their vitals, answer symptom related questions, manage their medication while also providing educational content on their condition. Meanwhile, the HRS software also allows clinicians the ability to monitor patient vitals and respond to high-risk alerts when patients are at risk for hospital readmission.

“The program was easy to understand, and the tablet was very easy to use,” said the wife of a telemedicine client. She adds, “the tablet provided valuable education and videos and overall the program kept [my husband] from returning to the hospital and doctor’s office.”

Colorado VNA clinicians use the unique ability of the HRS software to support enhanced care continuity by combining in-home visits with video, phone, and text communication to patient tablets. This allows clinicians the ability to routinely communicate with patients, to follow up on their symptoms and care plan adherence. Communication tools available through the software are designed to complement traditional at home care. Laurel Thompson, RN, is the Clinical Manager at Colorado VNA who is monitoring patients on the program. Thompson adds “the virtual visits have the potential to be a valuable supplement to in-home visits.”

CEO of Colorado VNA, Chris Lee states “We believe that the HRS platform can help us reduce hospital readmissions and improve the health status of vulnerable, high-risk individuals with heart failure, an exponentially growing segment of our state’s older adults.”

The pilot program was made possible by a partnership with several area physician groups and hospitals, such as The Medical Center of Aurora and Aurora Denver Cardiology Associates, and with philanthropic assistance from Caring for Colorado and Telligen Community Initiative. Lee comments, “this pilot is helping us advance new partnerships with other healthcare providers to build a team-based, cost-effective telemedicine program that fosters a culture of health, respect, and communication so that our clients can manage and live with their chronic illness during and beyond their time with Colorado VNA.”

CEO of HRS, Jarrett Bauer adds “we hope that our partnership helps Colorado VNA reach their goals of lowering hospital readmission rates for their heart failure patients and for keeping patients healthy and at home.”

About Colorado VNA

Colorado Visiting Nurse Association’s (VNA) mission is to provide the most appropriate range of health care solutions to allow adults to maximize independence and to heal and age at home.

Colorado VNA was founded in 1889 as The Denver Flower Mission to comfort Denver’s sick and poor. By the mid-1900s, Colorado VNA’s programs had grown to include immunizations and home visits, all overseen by a dedicated corps of 50+ nurses. In later years the agency added hospice and palliative care as well as a variety of wellness programs.

In 2016, Colorado VNA merged with its Greeley, CO-based sister agency RVNA, which was founded in 1979 to serve Weld County residents following a reduction in home health services previously provided by the County Health Department.

Today, Colorado VNA is a comprehensive home and community health and wellness care agency that provides a cost-effective array of supports and services, such as medical foot care, home-based nursing and physical therapy, and home-based hospice care to maximize function, safety, and independence so our older adult loved ones can remain where they most desire – home. Nikolas Cruz, 19-year-old student, who opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas School in Florida, and who had been excluded for disciplinary offences, was armed with an AR-15 semi-automatic 5,56-mm caliber rifle. This rifle is used by US police and is available  as a civilian weapon, intended for self-defense and hunting.Cruz had a significant stock of ammunition with him and managed to kill 17 people. The same rifle was used during previous mass shootings in the United States, such as the Orlando nightclub shooting, in a cinema in Aurora, Colorado, in a church in Texas, and at Sandy Hook school. According to CNN, Cruz bought the rifle last year and successfully passed the test, which a natural person has to take in the USA before buying firearms.Nikolas Cruz is believed to be an orphaned teenager, whose father died of a serious illness 12 years ago, and his adoptive mother died from pneumonia last year. The US-made semi-automatic assault rifle AR-15 is a descendant of the famous M-16 rifle. The AR-15 uses a smaller caliber of rounds - 5.56 (45 mm) instead of M-16's 7.62.The AR-15 assault rifle, the first modification of which was first released in 1958, is capable of breaking through a standard army helmet. The semi-automatic rifle releases one bullet each time the trigger is pulled. In the US, the AR-15 is a regular police weapon. This is also the most common version of weapons allowed for sales to the public. In accordance with the federal law, a US citizen is eligible to acquiring an AR-15 once they turn 18 years of age. As of 2016, Americans citizens own up to 10 million AR-15. In total, US citizens hold up to 300 million privately-owned weapons. Another bloodbath at yet another American school has raised the issue of the need to take measures to control the circulation of weapons in the United States. Barack Obama tried to do something about the problem, although to no avail. Interestingly, one of the slogans that incumbent President Donald Trump used in his campaign was about the protection of the second amendment to the Constitution that guarantees the Americans the right to own weapons. Trump has earlier reproached the Democrats for their attempts to deprive US citizens of the right. His opponents say that one should strengthen control over the sale of weapons and thereby prevent risks of future tragedies.President Trump sent his prayers and condolences to victims of the terrible tragedy in Florida. Yet, many Americans believe that instead of sending prayers, the president should do something about gun control. Meanwhile, Florida Senator Marco Rubio expressed doubts that establishing gun control could have  prevented the Florida school shooting. "I think that we can always have that debate but if you're going to have the debate about this particular incident, you should know the facts of that incident before you run out and prescribe some law you claim could have prevented it," Rubio said. Not that long ago, Donald Trump said that there would have been a smaller number of victims in Paris during the attacks in in November 2015 if ordinary French citizens had had the right to carry arms. Responding to a counter-comment about the number of mass shootings in the United States over the past two years, Trump said that if criminals could not have guns, they would have bombs. Since 2016, the United States has seen at least three major massacres, in which criminals used firearms. After each incident, a fierce discussion would spark in the country about the need to learn lessons from tragedies and ban free weapons-bearing. However, such discussions traditionally fade quickly. Those opposed to the second amendment to the US Constitution blame arms lobbyists that have legislative initiatives under control. Florida Governor Rick Scott called the tragedy "pure evil." He said that the State of Florida would not tolerate violence. At the same time, Scott said that the school tragedy in Florida was not a reason to discuss gun control. According to the Florida Governor, security is not a question of restrictions. One should prevent such tragedies with the help of law-enforcers and special programs for mentally unstable individuals. Shootings: Why Don’t Schools Have Better Security? – OpEd By Ryan McMaken*

Whenever there is a mass shooting in the media, commentators rush to figure out on what to blame the latest violence. Predictably, those who want gun control blame gun control. Others blame mental illness — and perhaps a lack of government programs related to it. Some others blame racism or ideology, as was the case with the Aurora theater shooting when one ABC talking head concluded the shooter must a “Tea Party” member within hours of the shooting. And then there’s the Republican politician who blamed the same shooting on “the ongoing attacks on Judeo-Christian beliefs.”

The odds of dying in a mass shooting remain amazingly small, as Healthline notes “The lifetime risk of dying in a mass shooting is around 1 in 110,154 — about the same chance of dying from a dog attack or legal execution.”

Nevertheless, the need to create a theory showing exactly what causes these shootings remains strong in many observers. Often, these theories are followed up with some demand for a change in public policy, whether it be gun control, more health care spending, or changes in education and social policy.

What all of the strategies have in common, however, is that they depend on very indirect solutions related to social engineering while ignoring the most proximate cause of the tragedies in question.

Those who think they can abolish school shootings with gun control, for example, must also then ensure that weapons cannot be attained by illegal means, and that potential murderers will not accomplish the same ends by using other improvised weapons.

Similarly, those who think that addressing mental illness must also assume that all potential perpetrators will receive treatment.

Even more fanciful is the idea that the FBI and other police agencies can be counted on to competently profile, and observe every potential shooter. The FBI’s record in this regard is rather sub-par, to say the least.

Moreover, these policies can take years to be implemented, and also require extremely broad, hard-to-enforce changes in policy. These policies also bring with them considerable downsides to the public at large in terms of financial costs and in civil liberties. Expanding FBI power to impose surveillance on every weirdo in America comes at a cost. Banning weapons — and then enforcing that ban — comes at immense cost as well.

In practice, the most practical strategy is preventing homicidal people from entering schools with weapons is to take a direct approach to preventing this sort of activity.

We already see this logic at work in airline safety, for example.

Yes, the logic is lost on some people, as in the people the spread around this meme:

The implication is that a nationwide gun ban works like a box-cutter ban. But the error here should be obvious. Box cutters and liquids were banned from commercial airplanes. Nearly 100% of adult Americans still own bottles of liquids and knife-like objects such as box cutters. And, virtually no one calls for a nationwide ban on box cutters or even on all substances that might be used to make bombs.

This is because many people recognize such broad solutions place significant burdens on society overall.

Just as the key to keeping hijackers off planes is to keep hijackers off planes, the key to keeping killers out of schools is to keep them out of schools.

For some odd reason, however, there continues to be resistance to the idea of developing serious, meaningful security strategies that directly address the situations that lead to deaths in areas such as schools, nightclubs, and hotels.

Mostly, this is due to nostalgia and fears of hurt feelings.

We’ve heard it all many times, of course. We can’t have greater security in schools, hotels, and shopping centers because “they will feel like prisons” or “kids will be hurt psychologically” or “it’s too expensive.”

When the rare tragedy of this nature does occur, though, these lines of thinking all lead to the same scenario: explaining to a child with a gunshot wound: “sorry kid, we could have had armed security personnel at your school, but we didn’t want you to feel bad.”

The “too expensive” excuse is especially galling since public schools are absolutely laden with non-teaching, administrative personnel unrelated to classroom instruction. As this study shows, since 1970, the student population has increased 8 percent while the non-teacher staff population has increased 130 percent. Gee, where could we ever find the resources for more security personnel?

Leave it up the people at The Nation, however, to call for less security at schools, because that money is being “diverted” from education.

To be fair to the authors, they do make two good points. The first is that the number of people who are murdered at schools nationwide is extremely low. Secondly, the article correctly notes that a lot of the money being spent on security is really just for show.

For example, while spending on “security” at schools has increased considerably in recent years, most of that money is spend on cheap quick-fixes like security cameras. Some spending is done on controlling access, but little is spent on competent on-site personnel and other strategies. The conclusion to draw from these fact, though, is not that money spent on security is necessarily wasted. It’s just being spent badly.

Even worse is the dismissal of security measures because they conflict with someone’s (usually incorrect) notions of what things were like in the good old days. “My grandpa never had security at his school” is a common thought. Well, maybe grandpa should have had some security, since data suggests homicide rates in the 1920s and early 30s were considerably higher than they are today.(1) Among those murders, for example, was the Bath School Disaster of 1927 in which Andrew Kehoe murdered 38 elementary schoolchildren. Those children never had grandchildren who would one day pine for “simpler times.”

One’s feelings about the days of yore and how the world ought to be are not a great basis for taking practical steps toward increasing security.

In the real world, if school shootings really are a concern, then entrepreneurs and consumers need to work together to find practical, affordable strategies that can be implemented.

Real experience suggests, however, that consumers don’t really care that much about it. Oh sure, people say they’re very concerned about it, but their demonstrated preference is usually toward cheaper tuition or keeping their kids in public schools where the administration is more concerned with hiring another guidance counselor than with investigating practical security options. If people were really concerned about it, we’d see a mass exodus of students from public schools with lackluster security measures. We don’t see that — and maybe people really do recognize how low the odds really are.

This lack of concern is also why many hotels — like the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas — can’t be bothered with implementing meaningful security. Customers are more concerned with keeping their weekend getaways cheap, and just trusting to luck that nothing bad will happen. Steve Wynn has noted that his hotels do in fact impose surveillance on customers in the name of security — something that has been unnoticed by consumers.

But, until enhanced security becomes something that is truly demanded by both voters and consumers, we won’t see much of it. People, apparently prefer what security experts call the “security roller coaster“: panic, forget, repeat.

SAN DIEGO, Feb. 16, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Arcturus Therapeutics Ltd. (NASDAQ:ARCT), a leading RNA medicines company, today commented on the amended 13D filing by Joseph E. Payne, who was fired from Arcturus as of February 1, 2018, for conduct that its Board of Directors deemed to be contrary to the best interests of the Company and its shareholders.

As part of the amended 13D filing, Mr. Payne has proposed to nominate four director candidates and requested to convene an extraordinary general meeting. Consistent with its commitment to best-in-class corporate governance practices, the Arcturus Board has initiated a process to meet with the proposed nominees, and will consider the nominations in keeping with this commitment.

The non-employee Board members of Arcturus, Dr. Stuart Collinson, Craig Willet, Daniel Geffken and Dr. David Shapiro, provided the following statement:

Our unanimous action to fire Joe was prompted by repeated instances of what the Board considered to be poor judgement on Joe’s part, including with regard to mismanagement of relationships with our collaboration partners. Given Joe’s actions, we are confident that we made the right decision. We believe Joe’s decision to advance four nominees outside of the Company’s nominating process is another example of him putting his own self-interests ahead of the needs of Arcturus and our shareholders.

The Arcturus Board is committed to acting in the best interest of shareholders and enhancing long-term value for all shareholders, and will continue to take the actions that it believes will enable the Company to achieve this objective.

Arcturus’ highly qualified and actively engaged Board regularly evaluates opportunities to add new directors who will help the Company achieve its strategic objectives. The Board brings a wide variety of healthcare, drug development and commercialization, and financial expertise that is critical to Arcturus’ business, and is committed to maintaining independence and benefitting from a range of perspectives, skills and experiences.

“Arcturus has a strong leadership team and deep bench of talent that continues to drive progress across our ongoing preclinical programs and advance our diverse pipeline of RNA therapeutics,” said Dr. Collinson, Executive Chairman of Arcturus. “We remain focused on enhancing shareholder value and achieving our objective of developing innovative RNA medicines with the potential to transform the lives of patients with serious diseases.”

“Arcturus’ expertise and intellectual property in the field of RNA medicines, combined with its multiple partnerships with industry leaders, position Arcturus for continued success,” said Dr. Shapiro, Arcturus director and Chief Medical Officer of Intercept Pharmaceuticals, Inc. “We are confident in Arcturus’ strategy and growth prospects as the Company continues to leverage its versatile RNA therapeutics platform.”
