InventHelp, a leading inventor service company, is working to submit Handlebar Camera to companies for their review.

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (PRWEB) December 02, 2017

According to police reports, many motorcycle and bicycle accidents happen because riders do not see the vehicle with which they collide until it’s too late. Fortunately, an inventor from Aurora, Ore., has devised a way to enable cyclists to see traffic approaching from behind much better than with standard side mirrors.

He developed the patent-pending HANDLEBAR CAMERA to improve safety for motorcyclists, bicyclists and operators of other vehicles with handlebars. As such, it provides riders with a clear view to the rear of the side toward which the vehicle is turning. Therefore, it has the potential to reduce the chances of motorcycle accidents, thus preventing injuries and saving lives. This durable, weatherproof and reliable system is also easy to use. In addition, it is convenient, practical and affordably priced.

The inventor’s personal experience inspired the idea. “I have a really hard time seeing in the small mirrors of a motorcycle,” he said, “and realized the mirrors on bicycles, scooters and mopeds all have similar-sized mirrors that do not provide optimum visibility.”

The original design was submitted to the Portland office of InventHelp. It is currently available for licensing or sale to manufacturers or marketers. For more information, write Dept. 16-POO-294, InventHelp, 217 Ninth Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15222, or call (412) 288-1300 ext. 1368. Sing a song of Chekhov at the Aurora

“What does this have to do with Olga?” one audience member whispered to another. In terms of explicit references, not too much. Though Beth Wilmurt’s “OLGA A Farewell Concert” is named after and inspired by the eldest sister in Anton Chekhov’s “Three Sisters,” the cabaret concert that opened Friday, Dec. 1 at Harry’s UpStage in Aurora Theatre consists almost exclusively of stripped-down, jazzy and twangy arrangements of a freewheeling assortment of pop music. Wilmurt mentions Olga by name just once, as an addendum to a recorded preshow announcement about turning off cell phones and finding emergency exits. Reported by SFGate 10 hours ago.

Tesla's Semi-Truck Would Require Energy Of 4,000 Homes To Recharge

Tesla's Semi-Truck Would Require Energy Of 4,000 Homes To Recharge Elon Musk’s reliance on shock-and-awe tactics and unjustifiably lofty performance projections is creating serious problems for the so-called visionary as *a growing number of experts have come forward to explain that many of his claims would defy the laws of physics.*

The latest group to call bulls--- is Aurora Energy Research, a European consultancy which estimated that Tesla’s electric haulage truck will require the same energy as up to 4,000 homes to recharge – a stunning claim that would seem to raise serious questions about the projects viability, according to the Financial Times.

According to these scientists, modern battery technology is incapable of supporting anything close to the 30-minute charging time Musk has promised for the new Tesla semi-truck.

*The US electric carmaker unveiled a battery-powered truck earlier this month, promising haulage drivers they could add 400 miles of charge in as little as 30 minutes using a new “megacharger” to be made by the company.*

John Feddersen, chief executive of Aurora Energy Research, a consultancy set up in 2013 by a group of Oxford university professors, said the power required for the megacharger to fill a battery in that amount of time would be 1,600 kilowatts.

*That is the equivalent of providing 3,000-4,000 “average” houses, he told a London conference last week, 10 times as powerful as Tesla’s current network of “superchargers” for its electric cars.* Tesla declined to comment on the calculations.

Elon Musk, Tesla’s chief executive, has previously said the megachargers would be solar-powered but the company has not confirmed whether they will also have a grid connection for when it is not sunny.

Many of Tesla’s current superchargers are powered in part by renewable energy. The company is also experimenting with storage batteries to ease demands on the grid.

*Tesla has promised to begin delivering its trucks in late 2019.* Electric battery capacity has been improving at a rate of roughly 8% per year – and some have posited that Musk’s lofty claims are merely just him trying to anticipate what will be possible as the first batch of trucks are being assembled. *However, if Aurora’s assessment is accurate, then the technological advancements needed to enable a 30-minute charging time for a semi-truck are still years, if not decades, off. *

Furthermore, Musk has said little about the enhancements to the power grid that would be needed to power fleets of Tesla’s semi-trucks.

*“There are smart and dumb ways to incorporate this level of capacity requirement into the system, but either way, fully electrified road transport will need a large amount of new infrastructure,” *Feddersen told the Financial Times.

National Grid, which oversees Britain’s electricity system, has suggested that in the most extreme scenario, electric vehicles could create as much as 18 gigawatts of additional demand for power at peak times in the UK by 2050.

This is the equivalent capacity of nearly six nuclear power stations on the scale of the Hinkley Point project under construction in the south-west of England.

Aurora posits that Tesla could try an engineering solution called segmenting – but that approach would come with technological hurdles of its own.

“The fastest chargers today can support up to around 450kW charging, so it’s not clear yet how Tesla will achieve their desired charging speeds,” said Colin McKerracher, head of advanced transport at Bloomberg New Energy Finance, a consultancy.

*“One option may be to segment the battery somehow and actually charge different segments simultaneously. This adds additional costs and we haven't seen anything like that done at anywhere near this power output.”*

mid-day editorial: Let's hope BMC's efforts hold water this time

mid-day editorial: Let's hope BMC's efforts hold water this time Those who have swum home in the notorious floods at Hindmata every Mumbai monsoon, will be relieved to know that the BMC has issued a Rs 67-crore contract to overhaul the old and arch-shaped 800-metre drains.

The area's British-era drainage network is set to change in the next 18 months. Reports in this newspaper stated that a contractor has been appointed to reconstruct the dilapidated drains passing through the area. The sewers are no longer able to drain out water from Naigaon, Parel and Hindmata.

The attention to Hindmata is welcome, as this patch is particularly troublesome during the monsoon. Despite efforts to drain out water at known trouble spots, these spots invariably get flooded every monsoon.

Mumbai needs vision and will when it comes to tackling flooding situations. The immense challenges that the monsoon poses, requires preparations and long-term solutions. The civic authorities must ensure that the contractor delivers quality work and the project progresses on schedule. Too often, we see infra projects that overshoot deadlines by months, if not years. Unfortunately, this has become the norm, rather than the exception.

We have also seen contractors delivering substandard work. No sooner is the facility inaugurated, than it comes crumbling down, requiring repairs or a complete overhaul. This is a criminal waste of money and time.

This time, let us look at a top-class drainage system that rids Hindmata of its woes once and for all. If this is successful, it can be used as a blueprint for different areas in the city, though each may have different designs and parameters. High and dry at Hindmata? Let us dare to dream and deliver.

*Nari goes full-length*
Until now, we thought Narendra Kumar was tinkering with filmmaking only to create a backdrop while showcasing his clothes. But the selection of his debut short, The Marriage of Shyla Patel, as the opening act at the Brisbane & Queensland International Film Festival, has inspired the designer to prolong his affair with films.

This time, we are told, it’s a full-length motion picture. Kumar hosted a fashion and jazz night at a Khar restaurant on Thursday night. While his partner, Kadambari Lakhani kept guests, including AD Singh, Aditya Hitkari and wife Divya, Upen Patel, Acquin Pais and hedge fund folk, company, Nari dropped in minutes before midnight.

Later, we learnt that he was delayed because he had a dinner date with Bipasha Basu and husband Karan Singh Grover. Perhaps he hopes to feature the couple in his next film? We promise to keep you posted.

But before the actual distribution, Bedi kicked things off with a press conference in the more familiar environs of a five-star lounge in Juhu - and that was that. With no sign of her in Dharavi, we learnt later that the real job had been left for others from the project. Call it a cameo?

*Remembering the refugee*
On World Refugee Day that was observed on November 30, Mumbai’s Jews and the Consul General of Israel-Mumbai Yaccov Finkelstien (inset) paid tribute to Jewish refugees uprooted in the Arab world.

This included the screening of The Pomegranate of Reconciliation and Honor, a documentary by professor Ada Aharoni (in pic).

The professor, also a Jewish refugee from Egypt, thanked filmmaker Richard Kazn Young and the Jewish Joint Distribution Committee via a message, appreciating the fact that the film was screened in Mahatma Gandhi’s India.

In order to check the menace, Mahim residents have written to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis as well as some of the city's top cops, complaining about the issue.*Mahim Dargah street*

In their letter to the CM, the residents have stated that drug addicts infest the entire locality, especially Dargah Street behind the Makhdoom Shah Baba shrine. Invoking some of the recent blade attacks in the area, locals have alleged that the menace has been plaguing the locality for years now. "Goons, drug addicts and perpetually drunk individuals have taken over Dargah Street.

Before the Mahim fair begins on December 3, we want the area cleaned of this menace as the presence of such anti-social elements is a major risk to visitors as well as locals in the region. Blade attacks are common in the area. It's unsafe for every person entering the locality," states the letter, which has been sent to the police commissioner, too.

Urging additional security during the 10-day fair, the locals have written, "While criminals roam the locality at any time of the year, it becomes particularly dangerous during the fair days. By not taking action against these thugs, the state is risking many lives."

*No help at hand*
LJ Road resident Farooque Dhala said, "People from all across the city, as well as far off places such as Bhiwandi and Mumbra, visit Mahim fair. We ensure that our family members avoid Dargah Street, but who is around to help the visitors during the fair?"
Echoing similar sentiments, another resident, Irfan Machiwala said, "Most residents here are afraid of opening their windows as drug fumes pollute the entire region. Even our cars parked on the streets suffer damage due to the nefarious activities of the addicts. The drug peddlers need to be nabbed. Even our kids run the risk of falling into their trap."*The letter sent to the CM*

*The signature drive*
Residents began a signature campaign today to garner support. Senior Police Inspector Milind Idekar of Mahim police station said, "We are aware of the issue. We plan to deploy a special squad in the area during the fair to nab the drug addicts and peddlers and keep the locals and visitors safe."

*Dynastic politics?*
While accusing the party of promoting dynastic politics, Poonawala has alleged that elections for the Congress chief's post are rigged. He has demanded that the election process be made more "transparent" so that any person from the party can contest elections for the top post that Gandhi is likely to take up in December.

Sources in the state Congress said that the Pune resident was an office-bearer in the Manikrao Thakre-led MPCC, but currently, he does not hold any position under the presidentship of Ashok Chavan.

"We will have to find out if he is a primary member of the Congress at this point of time. We can't take any disciplinary action against him unless he is proven as a member," a senior Congress leader said.

*'Publicity gimmick'*
Meanwhile, Chavan yesterday dismissed Poonawala's allegations as a publicity gimmick to promote himself. "He made the statement to kick up a controversy and get into the limelight. Poonawala isn't even an MPCC delegate or an office-bearer of the state committee. His statements bear no significance; we don't treat him as anyone important to the organisation," he said.

Accusing Poonawala of being an "inactive" member of the party, Chavan added, "He hasn't done anything consequential in a long time. He is absolutely inactive. The election process is being held in a judicious and transparent manner. All of us in the country want Rahulji to assume reins of the Congress as early as possible."

He said the party's national election committee had declared the election programme well in advance. "The party had given enough time to every member to come forth and nominate candidates of their choice. We at MPCC condemn Poonawala's baseless statements and allegations."

Rizvi Park resident, Darbar said, "I was at the hotel for some personal work. I kept my entire luggage, comprising two bags, on a chair beside me. While I was browsing through a newspaper that someone stole one of my bags. When I realised a bag was missing, I immediately started sifting through the bag that was left behind, and realised that the thief had escaped with all my money and valuables."

In his complaint, Darbar said that the bag contained a silver coin and cash up to Rs 2 lakh. "After I raised alarm the security staff searched across the hotel premises, but obviously came back empty handed."

A Worli police officer said, "The incident took place around 11.30 pm. We have booked an unknown person under section 380 (theft) of the IPC. We have recovered CCTV footage from the hotel’s lobby. We are also monitoring the footage from the hotel’s gates."

*Misleading statistics?*
In 2011, 518 HIV cases were reported among homosexuals in Maharashtra. This almost doubled in 2013, when 958 homosexuals were said to be infected with the virus. However, in some relief for the state, the numbers dropped significantly last year to 448.
Officials claim that the rising sensitisation among the community has prevented the infection from spreading. "Through intervention programmes, we have been able to attain such success rate," said Dr Srikala Acharya, additional project director of Mumbai District Aids Control Society.

But, according to LGBT activist Harish Iyer, the fear of arrest post the SC verdict, is the reason for the drop in numbers. "In the aftermath of Section 377 being re-established by the SC, there is more fear among gay people. They are scared to reveal their orientation, when diagnosed with HIV. So, the number of cases haven’t really reduced, but people are scared to reveal it post the announcement," he said.

Bindumadhav Khire, gay activist and founder of Samapathik Trust said that while it’s likely that the number of cases has gone down, most cases are still going unreported. "I have had cases where a homosexual has been blackmailed, when his identity was revealed," he said.

*Safe sex gone to the dumps*
In 2010, Family Planning Promotion Trust and National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) had announced that it would be launching a first-of-its kind gay condom, Spice Up, targetted at the gay community. "The condoms for anal sex are bigger and offer more lubrication. Often, many gay men avoid carrying lubricants, so they end up having casual sex without any protection," said a member from the community.

The condom was to hit stores by 2011. But, due to unknown reasons, it never took off. Vinod Aurora, joint secretary of NACO, which had announced the launch of Spice Up, said he was unaware of such scheme.

Hours later, the Mumbai Police detained Deshpande.

The surprise "confession" by MNS rekindled the ongoing row between the the two parties on the issue of north Indian migrants living and working in Mumbai.

Mumbai Congress President Sanjay Nirupam, himself a north Indian, termed the MNS vandalism as an "act of cowards by impotent and frustrated MNS workers who are routinely getting beaten up by hawkers".

He called upon Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to "act fast (against MNS) or a befitting reply will be given for sure".

Taking no chances after the Congress leader's statement, the police beefed up security outside Raj Thackeray's residence near Shivaji Park and MNS offices across the city.

The MNS has revived its anti-migrant agitation after nearly a decade in the wake of the September 29 stampede at Elphinstone Road station. The Congress is fully backing the migrants - with support from Fadnavis and Bollywood actor Nana Patekar among others.

Former Union Minister and senior party leader Gurudas Kamat condemned the attack and demanded that Mumbai Police Commissioner Dattatray Padsalgikar should immediately arrest "the goons".

"Shocking... To what level certain people can stoop is really disturbing. Even worse is to see to what extent they are protected by those in power," Kamat said.

Earlier, around 8 a.m., at least half a dozen MNS activists barged into and vandalized the Congress city headquarters at Azad Maidan when it was being cleaned.

Delhi accounted for the lion's share of 13,803 cases, the data showed. Mumbai also ranked second in the number of crimes against children. A city-wise comparison revealed that the maximum cases of crime against children were reported in Delhi with 7,392 cases followed by Mumbai with 3,400 cases and Bengaluru with 1,333 cases. The data on crimes against senior citizens showed that total of 3,562 cases of crimes against senior citizens were reported in 19 metropolitan cities during 2016. Mumbai accounted for 1,218 cases of these followed by Delhi with 642 cases and Ahmedabad with 362 cases, the data revealed.

Mumbai also stood first when it came to cyber crimes with 4,172 cases reported for the year 2016. Bengaluru was second with 762 cases and Jaipur stood third with 532 cases. Mumbai also witnessed 147 murder cases in the year
2016, the data said. Meanwhile, there was a decline in overall Indian Penal Code (IPC) cases registered in Mumbai in 2016 as compared to previous years. While Mumbai witnessed 40,361 and 42,940 IPC crimes in 2014 and 2015 respectively, it came down to 39617 in 2016, the report stated. Similarly, Maharashtra overall also saw less number of IPC crimes last year.

In 2016, the state saw 2,61,714 cases registered which was lower than the 2,75,414 cases of 2015. However in 2014 the numbers were still lower at 2,49,834 cases.

http://images.mid-day.com/images/2017/dec/Abdul-Parents-s.jpg*Abdul with his parents Imran and Rubina at the NH SRCC hospital, where he is recovering*

*Within minutes*
Abdul, a Std VIII student residing in Tulsiwadi, Tardeo, complained of severe headache and began vomiting around 9 pm. Within minutes, he had seizures. According to his father Imran Shaikh, who works as an assistant painter, and earns a daily wage of Rs 350 said, "I took Abdul in my arms and rushed him to a private hospital, where he'd previously been admitted on October 16, after he developed a similar problem, but the doctors there said he requires ventilator support as he was slipping into a coma, and that they do not have a spare ventilator.""I then rushed him to the JJ hospital, where the doctors said the same thing and advised us to take him to the Nair or Wadia hospital. At Nair too, we were told that no ventilator was available. We finally got him to SRCC at 2.45 am," recalled Imran.

"At JJ, I told the doctor that at a time when my child was in such a bad condition that he had to be on ventilator support, how could they expect me to take him to another hospital? But all my pleas went unheard. I was prepared for the worst," he added.

*Life threatening condition*
But this would soon change at SRCC. A CT scan and MRI confirmed Abdul was bleeding and cerebrospinal fluid was getting accumulated in his brain. His condition was turning into a life threatening one. Then, a team of experts, headed by neurosurgeon Dr Naresh Biyani, interventional neuroradiologist Dr Nishant Aditya, and director, paediatric critical care, Dr Soonu Udani conducted the necessary line of treatment, including a supra major surgical procedure, said Imran. Post surgery, Abdul continued to be on ventilator support and remained unconscious. But subsequently, he opened his eyes and slowly started responding and recognizing his family.

"We are thankful to the doctor and the entire team of experts for having understood our financial inability and still continuing with the line of treatment to save our child," said Rubina, Abdul's mother, controlling her tears. On November 29, Abdul was finally shifted out of the PICU and brought to the general ward, where his parameters will be monitored before he is allowed to go home.

*Bills to be cleared*
The life-saving surgery did come with a hefty bill. Imran said, "I am yet to clear the bill. On the day of admission, the hospital was kind enough to treat my child without demanding a deposit. I could only pay Rs 20,000, which was collected by my neighbours. I am told the bill is currently around Rs 8.70 lakh.""The hospital shared some contacts of various chartable institutions in Mumbai and I have been given a letter to approach them for financial aid. I have already got a response from one such trust in Dadar, that has assured to provide Rs 70,000 in aid. The hospital has not asked for money or pressurized me to cough up the entire sum.

*What makes it rare*
"We are grateful to the doctors and the hospital for saving my child. The doctors are hopeful that he will never have this problem again. Even the headache Abdul complained about would vanish in next few days," said Imran. According to the doctors at SRCC, "Abdul also has a liver condition, that is not seen with a brain aneurysm, making this a rare case. We will gradually start the treatment for his liver, as the biggest challenge for us was to save his life."

*First hospital missed aneurysm*
Dr Nishant Aditya said, "The first CT scan taken on October 16, soon after the boy fell, showed signs of haemorrhage, but it was ignored as it was believed that the haemorrhage had been caused as the result of a fall he suffered while riding a cycle. Despite that, the child was lucky to have survived the haemorrhage." But a few weeks after he survived that, Abdul suffered from another haemorrhage. "We diagnosed it as a case of subarachnoid haemorrhage and a brain angiography found a large aneurysm on the top of intestinal carotid artery (that supply blood to major left brain), which was quite big, a rarity in paediatric cases. This is the first such case in our centre.""We are satisfied with Abdul's prognosis and he has not developed any side effects. We have examined his speech, vision, motor activities and everything is fine. He will be kept under observation for a few days, before being discharged. He may need a visit on and off for at least six months," said Dr Nishant.

*Rs 8.70 lakh Cost of Abdul's surgery and hospital stay*

*Experts on the job*
The authorities have also roped in experts like Dr Ajay Deshmukh from Wildlife SOS, ACF Sunil Wadekar from Nashik to catch the leopard. Dr Deshmukh has been working with the forest department in Junnar to rescue many leopards. He is also known for his work in reuniting leopards with their cubs found in sugarcane fields. Wadekar also has vast experience in rescuing and trapping leopards in man-animal conflicts. Rajesh Thombare, honorary wildlife warden of Jalgaon, said, "In the last four months, man-animal conflict has resulted in the death of six people and injured others in Chalisgaon. In order to prevent any further incidents, the forest department is taking the help of experts to trap the leopard. Multiple teams have been made and the search operation is in progress."

He added that camera traps had also been activated in a 10-15 sq km range to track the leopard. The main challenge of the operation comes from the difficult landscape, which features a river, sugarcane fields and other places where the leopard can easily hide.

http://images.mid-day.com/images/2017/dec/slums-BMC-s.jpg*Representational Image*

According to the officials from the assessment and collection department of the civic body, the BMC had proposed to levy property tax of Rs 2,400 to Rs 1,800 on each slum structure, depending on its type and size. In April, the civic body in its budget of 2017-18 had proposed to impose property tax on slums, so that they can earn an annual revenue of Rs 250 crore. A senior civic official from the department said, "The proposal has been put on hold. We were ready to go ahead with the plan, but as Sena has proposed tax exemptions on houses upto 700 square feet, we decided to keep it on hold. The Sena's proposal has been sent to the Urban Development Department for approval, as the BMC Act, 1888, needs to be changed for its implementation."

He further said, "If the state allows rebate on houses which are less than 500 square feet, then there is no question of imposing property tax on slum structures. Also, in order to levy property tax on slums, we will need to change the BMC Act, as currently there is no such provision." Meanwhile, sources said that if the tax waiver proposed by Sena comes into effect, then it would put a burden of Rs 500 crore on the BMC. Hence, the civic body would lose a total revenue of Rs 750 crore.

Speaking to mid-day, B G Pawar, deputy municipal commissioner of assessment and collection department, said, "As per the proposal sent to the state government, all types of residential structures below 500 square feet will be exempted from paying property tax. The government will take the final decision on this."

"While this case is being dealt with, it is important for us to ensure the safety of all children. For this, it is necessary that the police carry out activities in schools so that children develop confidence in the police and share their problems. Counselling of children by women officers, or the appointment of a police didi who can periodically have talks with children in school - these measures can help in creating a dialogue," said A N Tripathi, secretary of the commission.

The child rights body took suo motu cognisance of the sexual harassment case of the three-year-old. The accused, a 57-year-old school trustee, was arrested a few days after the commission criticised police for its lethargic pace of investigation. Now that the accused are out on bail, the commission also asked the police if they plan to challenge the bail, considering the seriousness of the offence. The police representative responded that the department will seek legal opinion on the matter. Advocate S Balakrishnan, representing the complainant, said, "The complaint is registered under the Protection Of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. It is a serious offence and we demand to know how the accused were so easily given bail. We will apply for cancellation of bail." Despite mid-day's attempts to contact the school authorities, they were not available for comment.

Speaking to mid-day, Imran said, "My wife and I first went to Iran on February 17; from there, we went to Iraq on February 24. There, at the border, they detained me without giving us any reason. After two days, I was presented before a court and, then, taken to a prison in Baghdad. "I was in jail for eight months, after which, they presented me back in court, which told them to send me back to India." Imran also said there had been an Interpol order and an allegation against him, which stated that he had kidnapped the girl. "I called for the documents from India and showed the court that I was in Germany, and after that in Dubai, during the alleged kidnapping," he added.

*The other battle*
After Imran's detention, Kainat's journey wasn't easy either. "I visited the embassy there but couldn't do much. My in-laws then visited the embassy in India and tried to find a solution to get Imran back. In the meanwhile, I returned home. I too went to the embassy here a few times; I also filed a petition in the Bombay High Court through advocate Shehzad Naqvi. But that didn't help either, as the last order by the HC was to let the Iraq court decide," she said. "These nine months were excruciating; I had lost all hope of Imran returning, but I kept trying whatever I could. Now, I am afraid to plan a holiday outside the country after this experience." The Central Criminal Court in Baghdad, on October 16, ordered, "The court has decided to reject the request for extradition of Sopariwala and release him..."

Speaking to mid-day, Sachin Pawar, president of the Student Law Council, said, "Since the time the law students approached us with the complaint, we have been demanding changes in the timetable. We submitted our request first on November 17, but there was no response from the authorities. As the dates were clashing, thousands of students would not have been able to appear for the CS examination. As the varsity was not paying any heed to our demands, we had to stage the protest."  "This is unfair. Only a handful of law students appear for the CS examination. Just because a couple of students staged a protest, the varsity changed the timetable. Tomorrow if I manage to gather 1,000 students and stage a protest, then will the university make changes again? Such changes make sense only when the Commerce exam dates clash with that of CS, because almost 80 per cent of Commerce students appear for CS," said Jeetendra Chauhan, a student of College of Law.

Pratamesh's journey to the dizzying heights of space research is all the more amazing because of his humble beginnings. Living in a 10x10 house in the heavily populated Filterpada slums, it took every ounce of Pratamesh's willpower to focus on his studies and never lose sight of his goal.*Pratamesh Hirve at his 10X10 ft home. Pics/Rajesh Gupta*

*Unshakeable belief*
His friends and neighbours would see him study day and night, and often asked him what he hoped to achieve, but Pratamesh's belief in himself was never shaken - not even when a career counsellor told him he'd be better off studying Arts. "My aunt and parents had taken me for an aptitude test in south Mumbai. The specialist told my parents that my cousin brother had the aptitude for engineering, but that I should choose a career in Arts instead. I was upset, but refused to give up. I told my parents that no matter what, I would become an engineer, and they believed in me," he recalled. In 2007, he was granted admission in Bhagubhai Mafatlal Polytechnic College for a diploma course in electrical engineering. But this was just the beginning of his struggle, and Pratamesh had yet to overcome one of his biggest challenges – the language barrier.*With his father Soma and mother Indu.*

"I studied in a Marathi medium school till Std X. The first two years of the diploma course were very difficult for me because of the language barrier and the complex engineering terms. I used to sit at the backbench so the professor would not ask me questions I could not answer," Pratamesh said. "In the second year, I told my teacher about my language issue and he asked me to read and refer to the dictionary as much as possible. During my internships at L&T and Tata Power as well, my mentors encouraged me to study further, so I decided to pursue a degree from Smt Indira Gandhi College of Engineering in Navi Mumbai," he added.*From the 10X10 ft room he once studied in, Pratamesh Hirve’s life has suddenly expanded to the entire universe, thanks to his new job at ISRO. Pics/Rajesh Gupta*

*Not fazed by failure*
After he got his degree in 2014, Pratamesh had big plans for his future, but not everything worked out the way he had envisioned. He applied for a coveted spot in the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) recruitment but failed. He then decided to set his sights on the stars, and applied to ISRO last year, but made it no further than the waiting list. "By this time, I had started getting job offers, so I started working as an engineer. But my goal was to make it to ISRO, so, in May, I applied again," he recounted.

There were there were 16,000 applications, out of which only nine were selected - Pratamesh was one of them. "On November 14, when I found out that I was through, it was such a happy moment for me. I put in 10 long years of hard work before I could reach ISRO. I will be posted in Chandigarh. Now I want to give my parents a better home and life," said ISRO's newest electrical scientist.*Pratamesh Hirve*

*Parents thrilled*
Most of Pratamesh's loved ones had never heard of ISRO until he landed a job there, but his loved ones are thrilled by his success. Pratamesh's mother, Indu, 46, said, "I am a Std VIII-pass, at first, I did not understand what this job meant. When my husband explained that our son would be working with such an elite organisation, I was in tears. I remembered all the hard work he had put in since childhood - this is what he had wanted to achieve. I am very proud of my son, his hard work has paid off."

Pratamesh's achievement is even more thrilling for his father, Soma, 52, a primary school teacher. He said, "When Pratamesh refused to take up Arts and insisted on engineering, I just told him that he would have to study very hard, and he committed to it. When he told me he got a job at ISRO, I realised he had been right all along. He would study day and night, and our lights would never be switched off. Everyone at our native place in Dahiwadi, Satara, is as proud of him as we are."

It was just last week that Khan, who has been acclaimed for his large-scale and layered works (paintings, photographs, sculptures), was awarded the prestigious OBE (Order of the British Empire) medal from the Royal Family at the Buckingham Palace after being appointed as an officer of the OBE in the Queen's honours list for his service to art earlier this year.

Interestingly, the Mumbai show will also feature works by his wife and artist Annie Morris. "It's an honour to host the first-ever joint exhibition of the duo. He is one of the most iconic artists of our times," shared gallery director Ashwin Thadani.

*When uncles join in the partying*
Recently, the comedy collective AIB and popular music producer Nucleya set out to hunt for the ultimate party music artiste, and found four finalists. Hailing from Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru and Pune, each finalist will now get a chance to perform at the NH7 Weekender in Pune with an impressive line-up featuring Vishal Bharadwaj, Steve Vai and Prateek Kuhad among others.

But before that, we got a taste of the music of the new-found talent with one of the finalists, Pune-based Ritviz's winning track, Udd Gaye, which went online recently. With a catchy chorus and interesting beats, the video shows middle-aged and elderly men grooving to the music, and has already received over two lakh views. When it comes to peppy music, age is no bar.*Pic/Rane Ashish*

*Hasi toh phasi*
Laughter seems to have filled the air at the opening of a Bahraini art exhibition attended by (from left) artist Rouble Nagi, Sena leaders Aditya and Uddhav Thackeray and actor Jacqueline Fernandez at a Bandra art society yesterday.

*Cross-border litfest*
It's an event which as we speak, is breaking barriers, and borders. Penguin Random House has initiated a weeklong digital litfest to celebrate literature from India and Pakistan. Called Books not Borders, the first edition of this online project will focus on writing on and from both nations.*Moni Mohsin and Meena Menon*

The intent is to bring together the best writing, and use the medium to begin a dialogue for interested readers in the Subcontinent. There will also be exclusively written experiences, and collaborative articles by Indian and Pakistani writers. From Adnan Malik and Moni Mohsin to Sakshama Puri Dhariwal, Meena Menon and others, expect a rich legacy of the written word to be on display.

*Drumming up some noise*
In an effort to make Goa's beaches cleaner, a company that looks into garbage management, beach and marine safety across its coastline, kicked off the #TeraMeraBeach campaign this week. The campaign will see daily hour-long drum circles and community art at the popular Baga, Calangute, Candolim, Miramar and Colva beaches. Supported by the state government, the campaign aims to involve tourists.

The drum circle will be led by Taal Inc and the participants will add a piece from the collected waste to the art installation. While the concept is interesting, to what extent will drumming stop drunks in swimming trunks from throwing cigarette butts on the beach? We'll wait and watch.

*Mumbai's sweet note to the royal couple*
For Pooja Dhingra, news isn't just about keeping herself abreast of the goings-on. The pastry chef loves incorporating glamorous events into her creations, too. While earlier this year, she took inspiration from the red carpet looks of the Cannes film festival - think champagne dark chocolate cake and red wine-spiced macarons - this time, it was Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's engagement announcement that piqued her interest.

The result? Butter cookies, berry cupcakes and Belgian chocolate cake pops inspired by the royal couple's attires. "I've been a royal family sucker forever and have way too many books on William and Harry (don't judge me). And to add to it, I'm addicted to [Markle's TV show] Suits," confessed Dhingra.

I am not complaining. I imagined it would take much longer than it has. But 10 days since we started and we're close to completion. I am amazed and a little perplexed by how much I've managed to accomplish despite all of this homely confusion, the mess of chipped paint and the odour of primer and the intermittent droning of the electrician and carpenter's drill. Three big articles last week, almost on deadline, and another two in the last two days. In between, I locked up all my belongings or left a few at a friend's place and sought shelter at my best friend Mona's house, where I doubled as cat sitter for Fifi. It helped, to be in a large empty space, looking after no other demands than that of the muse and the beautiful feline whose territory I briefly inhabited. It's no exaggeration. Solitude is everything when it comes to writing.

And now here we are, on the first day of December. The year is completing itself, rounding up its months and its days and hours as we inch towards 2018. There's been so little time for reflection or even to circle over personal achievements, small victories that matter greatly in the cosmic scheme of things. Is this not something that you do, too, in the beginning of the last month of the year? Pause. Take stock. Realign your resolutions if you can even remember what they were? Sometimes I wonder what all this striving is for. What is its purpose? Then I am compelled to remember all the joy there is in the very pursuit.

Two weeks ago, when I began to clear out my apartment to make room for the renovation, I began to look at all my belongings through the eyes of someone who wasn't me. If someone were to frame an image of the kind of person I was, or sought to be, purely from the evidence posed by the things I owned or my decorating aesthetic and my collection of books and art, what version would emerge, I wondered. When my neighbour - Sonia, a 30+ schoolteacher with a background in interior decorating - came upstairs to survey all the changes that I had commissioned in terms of paint and floating book shelves, she declared, in her sweet Punjabi accent that it was all very "artisanal". It's an adjective I felt I could live with. But I am curious about the impending experience of re-settling into my apartment once the paint is dry and the stitches have been undone. It's what I ought to have been doing all of tomorrow and the weekend, except by the time you read this, I'll be in Mumbai, gearing up for my sister and our friend's bachelorette shindig. In between serious deadlines for stories ranging from the provocative questioning of the category of women artists to self-portraits by them to working on a proposal for a whole book based on my visits to artists' studios, I've been browsing Pinterest for ideas on creative cocktails and unusual parlour games. So far, my best discovery has been a pin about Rose pepsi-colas... You know those little plastic cylindrical bags filled with flavoured ice that we used to relish as children? except with Rose champagne.

I often envy not my neighbour's goods, but the very predictably settled nature of her existence. She works hard all day at a private school, then returns home to her parents, spends the evening tutoring underprivileged children for free (she says she does it as part of her deal with the 'uparwala'). On Diwali, I glimpsed at her praying with her mother, facing the altar that they've installed in one whole in-built cupboard. She had that blissful look on her face. She is not un-opposed to marriage, but would rather not settle down with a total stranger with whom she may have nothing in common, much to her parents' chagrin. But she's such a dutiful daughter, I cannot imagine they would grudge her that decision.

Me, I'm very little like her. My life has settled very differently. I do not share her hesitation about living alone, or her pious, god-fearing demeanour. I struggle with goodness. And the hectic, erratic nature of my writing schedule denies me the solemnity of the quotidian. I seem to have stumbled into a Bohemian lifestyle, which I embraced open-heartedly. The jury is still out on whether it's admirable or not, but there's no betraying my complete originality when it comes to the business of living.
