Paulsen, Kesman to Return as Hinsdale Central Interim Principals Patch Burr Ridge, IL --

District 86 has confirmed the two new interim co-principals who will preside over the 2013-2014 school year while a replacement is sought for outgoing principal Michael McGrory, and it's the same two who presided over an identical situation three years ago.

Tom Paulsen and Frank Kesman were confirmed for the positions by a unanimous District 86 Board of Education earlier this week. Both served as interim co-principals of Hinsdale Central during the 2009-2010 school year.

“We believe the join appointment of Mr. Kesman and Mr. Paulsen as Interim Principals for Hinsdale Central High School allows the building to maintain its current level of academic excellence and student opportunities as we conduct a national search for a permanent principal for the 2014-2015 school year and beyond," Superintendent Nick Wahl said.

“We will commence the principal search in the fall of 2013 and will engage parents, students and faculty and staff as we did three years ago.”

Paulsen is a former 13-year principal of Naperville Central High School, and later Associate Superintendent for Operations for Naperville Community Unit School District 203 before his retirement in 2007. He has continued to work with several organizations including North Central College, DuPage County Regional Office of Education Mentoring and Indian Prairie District 204.

Kesman was the 23-year assistant principal of Naperville North High School and then inaugural principal of St. Charles North High School for six years, until retiring in 2005. Since retiring, he also has worked with D204, as well as with Aurora University.

The outgoing McGrory, who has been Hinsdale Central's principal for the last three years, has accepted the position of principal at Muscatine High School in Iowa, McGrory's home state, and his last day of work in Hinsdale will be June 30. Reported by Patch 9 hours ago.

Lisle Baseball Wins Regionals and Advancing; Softball Upset Patch Lisle, IL --

With a 7-0 victory over Timothy Christian on Saturday, the Lisle High School Lions baseball team (18-10) captured the Class 2A Immaculate Conception regional championship and advanced to Wednesday’s sectional final versus Chicago Christian Academy at Benedictine University, the Bugle reports.

According to the paper, the three-hit, seven-strikeout shutout was credited to pitcher Ryan Van Volkenberg, with two RBIs from Cliff Krause and additional RBIs from Jake Oard, Adam Grego, Bailey Welch and Van Volkenberg himself; Lisle also beat IC Catholic Prep 7-4 on May 15 behind Alex Ventrella’s pitching and three RBIs from Kevin Coppin.

However, the Lions girls softball team’s season (13-12) was ended on May 14 in a narrow 5-4 extra-innings upset by Aurora Central Catholic, in which the top-seeded Lions staged an impressive fifth-inning comeback, but could only answer an eighth-inning pair of runs with a single one, the paper said; three of the team’s four hits came from pitcher Summer Stitt, who also tallied two RBIs and nine K’s.

CampingSurvival.com has announced the release of Solo Scientific's latest wilderness survival invention, the Tinder Hot Box Solar Fire Starter. This brand new product has both a tinder storage box that can start a fire, as well as a signal mirror inside the cover, enabling it to also be used as signaling device.

Fulton, NY (PRWEB) May 22, 2013

CampingSurvival.com has announced the release of Solo Scientific's latest wilderness survival invention, the Tinder Hot Box Solar Fire Starter™. This brand new product has both a tinder storage box that can start a fire, as well as a signal mirror inside the cover, enabling it to also be used as signaling device.

The Tinder Hot Box Solar Fire Starter is also a solar powered fire starter designed to function in any environment with sunshine and tinder. It has no moving parts, flint, fuels, gases or batteries, simply a parabolic reflector that focuses all solar energy to a single point at the base of the tinder holder arm. The tinder holder arm is securely stowed in the top housing during non-use to leave room for tinder storage and it can be changed from stow configuration to fire starting configuration in seconds. The top of the device is also a flat signal mirror, providing additional versatility.

"I first played with this device a few weeks ago, before it launched, and was truly excited," said Tom Sciacca, President of CampingSurvival.com. "This fire starter is so simple, durable and easy to use. All you have to do is point it at the sun and whatever tinder you have ignites almost instantly."

Sciacca noted that the Tinder Hot Box Solar Fire Starter just over 2-1/2 inches in diameter and less than three-quarters of an inch thick, so it easily fits in a pocket. The tool itself is machined from solid aircraft aluminum and knurled for better grip. It's also watertight, to ensure that your tinder stays completely dry, even in inclement weather.

"Multi-function tools like this are really helpful in the wilderness, because you get more utility while using less space in your backpack," said Sciacca. "Obviously, it's really critical that it doesn't come up short in any one area, though. I'm happy to say that Solo Scientific always comes through with products that perform exactly as they advertise."

Solo Scientific is an innovator in wilderness survival equipment, offering other versatile products such as the ion Flashlight Fire Starter, the Snare-Vival-Trap and the Aurora Magnesium Fire Starter.

CampingSurvival.com is a company focused entirely on wilderness survival, urban survival and disaster preparedness. The company president, Tom Sciacca, is a former Marine, a veteran of the 1991 Gulf War and a frequent blogger on disaster preparedness, wilderness survival and urban survival. Murder-Suicide Victim's Family Suing North Aurora Supportive Living Center Patch Batavia, IL --

The family of the 50-year-old victim of a murder-suicide in October is suing the Eden Supporting Living Center in North Aurora, where she was killed.

According to a report in The Beacon-News, the family of Tomi Vandiver is saying the assisted living community should have expelled her boyfriend and suspected murder, 58-year-old Jon Neel, because of his previous violent history.

Vandiver was stabbed to death Oct. 29, 2012, in the living center at 311 S. Lincolnway St., North Aurora. Neel died when he jumped out of a third-story window on that same day.

Vandiver had a romantic relationship with Neel, according to an initial investigation. She went to his apartment to gather some of her things early in the evening on Oct. 29 before she planned to meet a different man, who lived in the same building, police said during the investigation.

The lawsuit was filed by Vandiver’s children, Ali Pouliot and Michael Birch, who claim that a resident told officials at the center that Neel carried a knife and had a criminal history that included six domestic battery charges, the Beacon reports. The suit was filed in Cook County Circuit Court.

Aurora shooting suspect James Holmes bought bullets from Bulkammo.com

Unsealed search warrants show suspect in shooting that killed 12 used iPhone to take pictures of movie-theater door

James Holmes received six shipments of ammunition from an online retailer, carried a platinum MasterCard and photographed the door to the movie theater where he allegedly killed 12 people and injured 70, according to court records released Wednesday.

The information comes from search warrants unsealed at the direction of the judge overseeing the case against Holmes, who could be executed if convicted of the 20 July 2012 shooting in Aurora, Colorado.

The warrants show that in the hours after the attack, investigators wanted to search Holmes' bank records and an iPod Touch. They found that Holmes had received ammunition from the website BulkAmmo.com at his apartment in Aurora. Authorities wanted to determine whether he had received other material at the nearby University of Colorado, Denver, where he had been a neuroscience graduate student, or at his parents' home near San Diego. Detectives also wrote that on 9 July, Holmes downloaded a US Postal Service form to track shipments. That was around the time Holmes shipped a notebook and burnt $20 bills to his former psychiatrist at the university. That package was not found until after the shooting. The notebook's contents have not yet been disclosed.

The documents released on Wednesday did not show what investigators found. They did say that Holmes carried an iPhone that contained pictures of the theater where the massacre occurred. Included in those pictures were images of the door jamb at the theater. Prosecutors have said Holmes entered the theater that night apparently unarmed, slipped out the external exit door then returned with his weapons and body armor.

Holmes is attempting to plead not guilty by reason of insanity. He is due to appear in court on Thursday, for a routine hearing.

Wednesday's release is an addition to a wider April disclosure of documents that were sealed in the days after the shooting. Media organizations successfully sued to unseal those search warrants and affidavits. But a handful of records were omitted from the April disclosure and were released instead on Wednesday. Fisher-Price Eliminating About 100 NY Jobs

EAST AURORA, N.Y.—Toy maker Fisher-Price said Wednesday it’s moving or eliminating roughly 100 jobs from its operations in the state as part of restructuring by parent company Mattel Inc. The majority of jobs will be reassigned to Mattel’s El Segundo, Calif., headquarters, and workers have been offered relocation packages, but an unspecified number of employees received layoff notices, said Fisher-Price, the maker of Little People and Power Wheels. Most of the affected employees work at Fisher-Price’s East Aurora headquarters near Buffalo, and the rest are in New York City. The cuts do not affect employees in toy design and development at the 900-employee East Aurora campus, Fisher-Price spokeswoman Brenda Andolina said. “This is in no way a reflection of a skills deficiency,” she said. “It’s a structural change, and we are sad to see the transition happen.” The moves are part of a reorganization undertaken by Mattel last year that included creation of a North America Division, based in El Segundo, to work more closely with retailers in the United States and Canada, the company said.

Will Jittery Joe's Move Into Aurora Coffee in VaHi? Patch Virginia Highland-Druid Hills, GA --

The much-loved Aurora Coffee in Virginia Highland closed its doors on Tuesday, but now there's talk about who will take over the space.

Eater reports that Jittery Joes may move in. The website reported,

The Jittery Joe's will be operated by the people behind another Athens-based local coffee shop, *Hendershot's*, but the lease is still being negotiated. In March, Hendershot's got notice that they had until June 30 to leave their current Athens space due to a parking/leasing dispute.

Aurora Coffee had operated out of the building at 992 N. Highland Ave. NE more than 20 years. The Aurora shop at 468 Moreland Ave. in Little Five Points will not close.

Virginia Highland lost another coffee shop when Steady Hand Pour House shut its doors last month. The shop is located, at least temporarily, in the Iberian Pig in Decatur.

Looks like there are more smartphone-loving vampires than we first thought. Following Samsung's plans to offer the Galaxy S 4 in multiple new colors, AT&T has scored a US exclusive for the smartphone in a very distinctive Aurora Red. The crimson-hued Life Companion will be available for pre-order on May 24th, with retail stores getting their supply on June 14th. The lone disappointment is the capacity: AT&T is only offering red for the 16GB, $200 model. Search warrants filed hours after the Aurora movie theater shooting released Wednesday by a judge reveal that Aurora shooting suspect James Holmes received six deliveries from an online ammunition vendor in the weeks before the massacre that left 12 people dead and 58 more wounded.

These newly unsealed warrants reveal that Holmes received six deliveries of ammo from online retailer BulkAmmo.com, according to UPI. Shortly after the shooting, police announced that Holmes had purchased over 6,000 rounds of ammunition online in the weeks leading up to the tragic shooting.

BulkAmmo.com describes itself as an online retailer "offering only the best deals to the most serious shooters for bulk handgun ammo, bulk rifle ammo, bulk shotgun ammo, and bulk rimfire ammo."

In the wake of the Aurora shootings back in July of 2012, President Barack Obama indicated that he would "evaluate" a bill limiting the sale of online ammunition filed by Sen, Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) and Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.). H.R. 142, which was introduced in the House in January, would significantly curb the ability of people to buy unlimited amounts of ammunition via the Internet or other types of mail orders by requiring photo ID at the time of purchase. It would also require ammunition dealers to report bulk sales of bullets to law enforcement.

During Holmes' hearing, prosecutors revealed that not only did Holmes purchase ammo online, he also purchased two tear gas canisters and body armor. Holmes' weapons -- an assault rifle, shotgun and two Glock pistols -- were purchased at local sporting goods stores.

The warrants show that Holmes received the ammo shipments and also several other packages sent to his apartment "on an almost daily basis" in the weeks leading up to the massacre, The Denver Post reports.

Regarding the AR-15 assault weapon Holmes used, HuffPost's Kurt Heine reported:

Some versions of the AR-15 assault rifle that police said was one of three guns James Holmes carried into the movie theater massacre were outlawed for civilian sale under the federal assault weapons ban that expired in 2004. Since then, all versions have been legal for sale and possession in the U.S.

The AR-15, widely distributed by more than two dozen manufacturers in a range of calibers, is a semi-automatic rifle that fires shots individually, with each pull of the trigger. Aftermarket parts available at sporting goods stores include magazines big enough to hold 90 bullets. AP reports Holmes' gun was equipped with a high-capacity, drum-style magazine.

Inside Holmes' apartment, police found more than 30 homemade grenades, 10 gallons of gasoline, improvised explosive devices (IED's) and trip wires or trigger mechanisms -- all of which were secured from the apartment.

An unnamed law enforcement official told CNN that grenades were wired to a control box in the kitchen, resembling setups that are more often seen in Iraq and Afghanistan. The official added that had the explosives gone off as intended, they likely would have knocked down the walls of nearby apartments.

Dateline's Chris Hansen reportedly got a peek inside and described what he saw with NBC viewers, remarking that the explosives were sophisticated enough to take the building down.

In the middle of his living room are dozens of black softball shaped firework shells that he bought filled with explosive power. They are all over the place. In the middle there are two jars full of liquid wires as I said all over the place there was a black box with a red blinking light. A mechanical camera then pans over on top of a glass table -- you see this water cooler jug half full of bullet. Then you pan down, then you see this black box with another red blinking light.

The camera goes over, there are two chairs one has a jar apparently with fluid. The other has another black box and then there are green soda pop bottles filled with fluid all the way around.

Holmes, who wants to plead not guilty by reason of insanity, is charged with 166 counts of murder, attempted murder and other offenses connected with the Aurora shooting. He is scheduled to appear in court again for a routine hearing, Thursday. Reported by Huffington Post 1 hour ago.
