Training and Corresponding Smoke Alarm Donations Assist Departments in Community-Based Fire Safety Education and Alarm Installation Programs

AURORA, Ill. (PRWEB) October 16, 2017

In a fire, seconds count. Early warning from a properly functioning smoke alarm can provide life-saving detection and critical escape time to family members. Unfortunately, too many homes lack working smoke alarms or do not have a sufficient amount of working alarms for adequate protection. For this reason, First Alert and the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) recently developed a new smoke alarm training course for fire departments nationwide, supplemented by an alarm donation program to help community members in need.

Called the “First Line of Defense,” the course aims to train fire department personnel in smoke alarm installation and safety to help reduce the risk of residential fire injuries and deaths in communities across the country. According to the National Fire Protection Association, 60 percent of home fire deaths occur in homes without sufficient smoke alarm protection, and the death rate from home fires is more than twice as high in homes that do not have any working smoke alarms compared to those with working smoke alarms.1

“No one is immune to the danger of home fires, but preventive steps can − and must − be taken,” said Tarsila Wey, director of marketing for First Alert, the most trusted brand in home safety.2 “We want to support the good work that volunteer fire departments are already doing in providing community-based fire safety education, which often involves installing smoke alarms in their communities. Through the training and First Alert’s corresponding smoke alarm donation program, we aim to equip these brave and selfless men and women with the tools to help reduce the number of home fire injuries and deaths in their communities.”

The course provides detailed information about how to properly install the correct type of alarm, appropriate in-home placement and maintenance, and the background of alarm technology. The training also emphasizes the importance of alarm replacement and knowing state and local fire codes, as many states and cities require battery-powered smoke alarms to feature a tamper-resistant 10-year sealed battery.

To compliment the training, First Alert donated 500 of these 10-year alarms to volunteer fire departments to allow them to make an immediate impact in their communities. Departments involved in the donation program were part of the NVFC’s Fire Corps program, which utilizes community volunteers to assist resource-constrained fire departments with non-operational tasks such as community education and smoke alarm installations.

“The educational resources provided in this course, combined with First Alert’s large donation of 10-year sealed battery smoke alarms, helps make communities across the country significantly safer,” said NVFC chair Kevin D. Quinn. “We are grateful for the bravery and commitment of volunteer firefighters and support personnel to keep their neighbors safe and help prevent fire-related injuries and deaths.”

The “First Line of Defense” is now available in the NVFC Virtual Classroom. Access the course at http://www.nvfc.org/access-the-nvfc-virtual-classroom. The course will be FREE for the first 500 participants, compliments of First Alert, so sign up today! For more information on consumer fire safety and products, go to http://www.firstalert.com.

As the leader in the outdoor living industry, The Outdoor GreatRoom Company™ (OGC) is excited to launch four new gas fire pit table products for 2017 and 2018.

MINNEAPOLIS (PRWEB) October 17, 2017

As the leader in the outdoor living industry, The Outdoor GreatRoom Company™ (OGC) is excited to launch four new gas fire pit table products for 2017 and 2018, available to order now. All models are UL listed for safety and feature the latest trends in the outdoor room.

The first of its kind, the Boreal Complete Heat gas fire pit table provides total warmth from top to bottom keeping both your hands and feet cozy. The Boreal Complete Heat features a stunning flame, which creates radiant heat to warm the body. A portion of this heat is captured and is then directed out from the bottom of the base through hidden ventilation to warm the feet. Perfect for extending the outdoor season into the cool fall nights. Modern design with optional LED under lighting resembles the Aurora Borealis.

The modern Cove Square gas fire pit table comes after overwhelming popularity of round and rectangular models. The unique feature of the Cove Square gas fire pit table is the extra storage space in the base for a 20 lb. LP tank. The beautiful natural concrete Supercast base complements a black color coated stainless steel burner.

After the huge success of the Brooks gas fire pit table, the Kenwood Collection was born. Featuring a brown composite decking, this small but stylish fire pit table is both affordable and made of quality materials.

Also new for 2017 and 2018 is the Vintage gas fire pit table featuring a smaller 12x24” Honey Glow Brown color coated stainless steel burner. This on trend fire pit table joins two larger models in the Vintage Collection. The colorful faux-wood tile top complements the cedar wood paneled base. Perfectly sized for people with smaller outdoor spaces who don’t want to sacrifice style for size.

Hong Kong's Outbound Travelers Keen on Short-haul and Exotic Destinations

HONG KONG, Oct. 17, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Travelzoo® (NASDAQ: TZOO), a global publisher of exclusive deals for members, today disclosed the key findings from the first half-year of 2017 statistics of the Top 20®, Travelzoo's famous weekly newsletter that has been sent to more than 500,000 Travelzoo Hong Kong members for the past 10 years, that short-haul destinations remain by far the most popular vacation choice and there is a new trend that exotic destinations are gaining attraction from sophisticated travelers in Hong Kong.

*90% of the clicks from Travelzoo's Top 20 readers go to Asia Pacific*

Travelzoo published 521 deals in 26 issues of the weekly Top 20 in Hong Kong in the first half-year of 2017. It's been sent out every Wednesday, even if Wednesday is a public holiday. The click data from the six months show that 9 out of 10 most-clicked destinations are within Asia Pacific.

The 10 most-clicked destinations in the first half-year of 2017 were:

1.    Macau

2.    Bangkok

3.    Taipei4.    Seoul5.    Osaka6.    Tokyo7.    Okinawa8.    Hong Kong9.    Singapore10.    Nagoya

The statistics show that Japan, Thailand, and Taiwan continue to be the all-time favorites for Hong Kongers. Japan, the country connoisseurs of high-quality fresh sushi make pilgrimage to, was crowned as the top destination by almost accounting for 1/4 of the clicks and traffic in the first half of 2017.Japan is known as the country connoisseurs of high-quality fresh sushi make pilgrimage to.

"Undoubtedly, short-haul travel deals are most well-received by our members," comments Kevin Shui, Travelzoo's General Manager, Hong Kong. "They offer a safe and economical choice for the savvy travelers like our members. We are confident to predict that destinations in Asia Pacific will continue to attract more Hong Kong outbound tourists in the foreseeable future."

In terms of clicks and conversion rates, Hong Kong's travel enthusiasts loved the Macau deals in the Top 20 the most as Macau hotel packages performed the best in the first six months of 2017. "It's not uncommon to see a new Macau hotel in our Top 20 attract almost 20,000 views and hundreds of inquiries in less than 72 hours," adds Shui. In Hong Kong, Travelzoo members respond very well to recommendations on spas and hotels for a staycation.

*Hong Kong travelers are getting more adventurous*

There have been deals to encourage Hong Kongers to explore exotic destinations such as Cambodia, Vietnam, Nepal, Laos, Russia, Kazakhstan, Czech Republic (Prague), Tibet, Kenya and South Americas. Collectively, they generated 35,907 clicks—nearly as many clicks as Singapore did (35,536)—which is a notable trend from the same period last year.

As far as Australia goes, besides Sydney, Melbourne and Gold Coast, Travelzoo Hong Kong members recently were very keen about Tasmania where they could see the Aurora Australis light up the sky. When it comes to Taiwan, although Taipei came third among most-clicked cities, there has been an increase of Hong Kong tourists visiting Yilan and Hualien for the beautiful natural landscape. "Travelzoo Hong Kong members love to travel. They value exploring the nature and having cultural experiences when they travel in-depth. We strongly believe the exotic destinations will keep emerging to prevalence in the Hong Kong travel market," comments Shui.

*Less interest in Europe and North America*

Travelzoo Hong Kong has also recommended over 100 deals to Europe and North America during the six months. The collective performance of the two continents is as good as Thailand. "With news about terrorist attacks in Europe and mass shootings in North America, Hong Kongers do have concerns about safety when they make decisions on their next holiday destinations since many of them travel with family," adds Shui.

*Top 20 on every Wednesday since 1999*

Travelzoo's Top 20 list has been published in the U.S., where Travelzoo began, since 1999. Every week, Travelzoo's producers review deals from more than 2,000 travel companies to compile the famous Top 20 list, which is released every Wednesday. Promising Phase 1/2 Results for entrectinib Against ROS1+ Non-small Cell Lung Cancer

Of 32 patients treated on trial, 75 percent responded, including 7 of 11 patients whose disease had metastasized to the brain. Data will be updated October 18 at World Conference on Lung Cancer.

AURORA, Colo. (PRWEB) October 17, 2017

Results of an ongoing global phase II clinical trial of the drug entrectinib against ROS1-positive non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) will be presented October 18 at the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer’s 18th World Conference on Lung Cancer in Yokohama, Japan. As of May 2017, 32 patients were evaluable for response. At a median follow-up of 12 months, 75 percent of patients responded to the drug, including 7 of 11 patients whose disease had metastasized to the brain or elsewhere in the central nervous system. At the time of evaluation, 19 of these 32 patients continued to experience disease control and remained on study. Data from these continuing responders will eventually increase the calculation of progression-free survival, which was seen at this midpoint to be 19.1 months. These data will be updated at the time of presentation.

“In 2016, the drug crizotinib earned FDA approval to treat patients with ROS1-positive non-small cell lung cancer, and now we see very promising results for this potent, CNS-active ROS1 inhibitor, entrectinib,” says Robert C. Doebele, MD, PhD, investigator at the University of Colorado Cancer Center, associate professor of Medical Oncology at the CU School of Medicine, and the trial’s primary investigator.

In fact, laboratory work shows that entrectinib is about 30 times more potent than crizotinib in inhibiting the action of ROS1. The study calls entrectinib “well tolerated” reporting mild (grade 1 or 2) side effects including fatigue, dizziness, weight increase, nausea, constipation and diarrhea.

Importantly, entrectinib can penetrate the blood-brain barrier to act against metastasis of ROS1+ NSCLC in the central nervous system.

“Previous drugs targeting ROS1 such as crizotinib have poor CNS penetration and therefore can allow disease progression in the brain even before the cancer becomes resistant to the drug. For these patients, we’ve been using targeted radiation and other strategies to try to control brain metastases while continuing to target ROS1 in the body. We are hopeful that entrectinib will help us control many cases of ROS1+ cancer in both the body and the brain,” Doebele says.

ROS1 is a protein called a tyrosine kinase that acts as a kind of on-off switch for various cell functions; in this case ROS1 is altered to continuously signal cells to improperly grow, spread and survive, making the cells act cancerous. ROS1 rearrangements are found in approximately 1-2 percent of lung cancer patients, the majority of whom have never smoked.

The global phase II clinical trial (NCT02568267) continues to enroll patients with solid tumors harboring not only ROS1 rearrangements, but also NTRK rearrangements. Reported by PRWeb 6 hours ago.
