Update: July 11, 2017: We've added a review of the Geeni Prisma 450 smart bulb to this collection. Smart color light bulbs—LED-based bulbs that can be controlled by a smartphone and “tuned” to emit any hue in the rainbow—are no longer a new idea. What is new is how far this technology has come since its advent just a few years ago. Also new: Products like the Nanoleaf Aurora that fundamentally change the light bulb concept. Aurora is a system of interlocking LED panels that let you decorate with light. You'll find our review here.

Astronauts in space have recorded a breathtaking new video of Earth's aurora

Astronauts in space have recorded a breathtaking new video of Earth's aurora Auroras are one of the most beautiful and bewildering natural spectacles on Earth. But the view is even better from above.

The faint green glow of auroras is caused by high-energy particles from the sun plowing through Earth's atmosphere. Bands of the aurora dance, bob, and weave as the flow of solar particles fluctuates and interacts with our planet's magnetic field.

Typically only people who live in the darkest  reaches of the world (far north or south) get to enjoy such light shows.

If you're an astronaut flying around the planet, however, you get a view of auroras that is simply unmatched — like this one, recorded on June 25:The clip captures the Aurora Australis, or southern lights, as seen from the International Space Station, which orbits about 250 miles above Earth. (The Aurora Borealis, or northern lights, occurs in the northern hemisphere.)

A member of the orbiting laboratory's Expedition 52 crew recorded the video, according to NASA.

"The International Space Station was flying from south of Australia to the southern Pacific Ocean," when it captured the footage, NASA explained in a description.

The video is actually time-lapse imagery, since it takes the space station about 90 minutes to complete one orbit. (About half of that time is spent in darkness.)

Watch the full video below.

Ronen wonders if proposed fee for utility boxes is high enough

A proposed law that would relieve AT&T of obligations to spruce up its sidewalk utility boxes hit resistance Wednesday at a Board of Supervisors commitee meeting, when one supervisor asked if the city was asking enough of the telecom company. Supervisor Hillary Ronen, who chairs the Public Safety and Neighborhood Services Committee, expressed cautious support for the proposal to allow companies to pay fees instead of beautifying their boxes with trees and murals. Supervisor Malia Cohen, who sponsored the ordinance, warned her colleagues not to fixate on mural cost, since the money would get added to a city fund that would go toward other projects, as well. Cohen said the ordinance is really about enabling AT&T to deliver high-speed Internet to residents throughout San Francisco, including people in low-income neighborhoods. Attorney Joel Aurora of the political law firm Nielsen Merksamer submitted the referendum Friday, at which point he had 30 days to gather 19,040 signatures from San Francisco voters — 10 percent of the vote count from the last mayoral election. “We think the Board of Supervisors is limiting freedom of choice for San Francisco voters,” said Jaime Rojas, a spokesman for the group Let’s Be Real San Francisco, which is running the referendum campaign. The group represents tobacco manufacturers R.J. Reynolds and Altria, as well as several vaping advocacy groups and the Arab American Grocers Association, whose members opposed the supervisors’ ordinance, saying it hurt immigrant business owners. Supervisor Malia Cohen, who sponsored the flavored tobacco ban, called the referendum a “ridiculous attempt to put profit over people’s health.” If Nielsen Merksamer gathers enough signatures to ratify the referendum measure, the ordinance would be suspended and the supervisors will get a chance to reconsider their vote. Feldco Windows, Siding and Doors is excited to announce the winners of its 2017 scholarship contest.

Des Plaines, IL (PRWEB) July 13, 2017

Feldco Windows, Siding and Doors is excited to announce the winners of its 2017 scholarship contest. The contest offered a $1,000 scholarship to current or prospective college students that best answered the essay question “How has your family contributed to who you are today?”

Feldco awarded two winners who best exemplified Feldco’s family values in their essays. Emily Laughead of North Aurora, IL and Catherine Haws of Mt. Vernon, Ohio were chosen from the 2,700 applicants nationwide.

Emily Laughead will be entering her sophomore year at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the fall of 2017. The Feldco scholarship committee was impressed with Emily’s advocacy for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, an organization dedicated to Type 1 Diabetes research. Reflecting on the scholarship application, Emily stated: “I really enjoyed the opportunity to think about how my family has gotten me to where I am today. It was a really cool opportunity to think back on my life.”

Catherine Haws will be a junior this coming school year at Asbury University located in Wilmore, Kentucky. Catherine’s eloquent and clever writing of her family story fascinated the scholarship committee. “I am just super excited to receive this scholarship,” said Catherine. “I really enjoyed writing this meaningful essay.”

Feldco’s scholarship contest demonstrates the organization’s commitment to education and support of communities they serve. The company refers to its employees as the “Feldco Family” believing it is that culture that contributes to their overall success. Reading how students’ families have impacted their lives was a pleasure for the committee.

Feldco congratulates Emily and Catherine on their wins. Submission is open now through January 15th, 2018 for Feldco’s next scholarship contest.

The new versatile Flex E™ recycling bin will be available July 14, and it will help organizations save money while providing a successful recycling program.

Aurora, Ontario (PRWEB) July 15, 2017

CleanRiver Recycling Solutions is known for its innovative recycling bins, which provide customizable commercial recycling with adjustable volume and waste compartments. For more than 25 years, the company has provided recycling solutions made from recycled materials. It's flagship product, Transition®, is made from 97% recycled HDPE lumber.

Now, the company is introducing a more cost-effective solution, the Flex E™ bin, which is made with the smart design of Transition® but in a recycled plastic molded form. To be released on July 14, the new recycling bin is ideal for classrooms, recreational facilities, cafeterias, manufacturing facilities, offices, parking garages, and literally any public space.

“Working with clients in their pursuit of sustainability excellence over the past 25 years has revealed an endless series of challenges and changes,” says Bruce Buchan, CEO of CleanRiver Recycling Solutions. “Change is constant, and it occurs faster than most organizations can react effectively. One of the most common problems is the change of the collection process from multiple streams to commingling, or the addition of new materials, such as compostable plates and cutlery. The Flex E™ bin allows programs to change streams and adjust volume requirements per container in less than five minutes.”

Ease in custodial servicing was a top concern addressed in the design of the new bin, as it includes handles for effortless moving. Also, the product’s vented design allows for easy bag removal, and the unique patented bow-tie bag system facilitates simplicity and speed in changing bags. The new product is sure to be popular for use at special event venues due to its ability to nest inside itself, which allows for easy storage.

A study performed by the University of Toronto Mississauga showed that the waste diversion rate of organizations increased by 167% through the use of high-impact graphics. Designed with these high-impact recycling graphics, the Flex E™ bin encourages participation in recycling. The product’s sturdy background graphics and stream labels help people make the right choice as they toss their trash.

“This revolutionary product will enhance an organization’s recycling program to support its recycling goals while protecting its investment,” explains Buchan.

Facility managers who are interested in making waste management more sustainable can find out more about the new Flex E bin™ and view models of the product by visiting http://flexebins.com/.
