What Is This Strange Light In The Canadian Sky - And Why Are We Calling It 'Steve'? by Graham Pierrepoint -

The origin of a strip of light spotted in the night sky is still being investigated ..

The natural world is amazing – it continues to baffle, astound and to inspire us all, especially those who are keen to look more than a little closely at what is unfolding around us. The Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, are some of the wildest and most captivating natural sights you’ll find in our skies – and it seems that one strand of light in particular is receiving more notice than normal due to its odd location and the fact that even the keenest of skygazers are struggling to figure out exactly what it is. Further to this, it’s been named rather humbly – ‘Steve’.

Steve is a lone strip of light that has been found further south than the Northern Lights which has set certain scientific tongues wagging as they try to uncover exactly where he has come from. Is he a remnant of a passing meteor? Or is he perhaps a long-lost cousin of the Aurora Borealis? No one’s really sure – but after a Facebook group started noticing that Steve was appearing in more and more photos shared between keen light-spotters, an investigation into the light strip phenomenon was mounted.

Steve is thought to be thousands of miles long and is travelling at a pace of around 4 miles per hour through the sky – and while he may appear to the untrained eye as little more than a simple strand hanging in the air, photographs are showing an entirely different picture altogether. Professor Eric Donovan, at the University of Calgary, was keen to advise that the discovery and investigation into Steve’s nature was still very much unfolding – and that discussion and intrigue over his appearance has provided a rather nice link between social media and the scientific community at large.

The strip of light will stay named Steve, it is thought, until more is learned about exactly what he is. Further thorough investigations by Donovan et al, who have been able to determine that the strip could be as hot as the Earth’s core, could continue for a few months before we know exactly what we are looking at. Will the Steve moniker stick, though? For some of those who have been ingrained in the Facebook group from the start, perhaps, it will be hard to let the rather humble name go – but at least we will soon hopefully have more of an idea of what he is doing in the skies above Canada, and why!

Chris Murphy Ignores Donald Trump's NRA Speech, Remembers Victims Of Gun Violence Instead

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), an outspoken critic of gun violence since the Sandy Hook massacre took place in his home state, ignored President Donald Trump’s remarks to the National Rifle Association on Friday.

Instead of listening to the president, Murphy put his focus on victims of gun violence, tweeting out photos of people killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School; in a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado; on the streets of Chicago; and more.

Here's my advice. Turn off cable. Don't watch @realDonaldTrump's NRA speech. Instead, think about who we are fighting for.

— Chris Murphy (@ChrisMurphyCT) April 28, 2017

Murphy posted 11 photos of gun violence victims. Many were killed in shootings that made national headlines, like Alison Parker, a news reporter who was shot and killed on live television in 2015.

Murphy noted that 90 percent of Americans have said they would support expanded background checks for gun buyers, reflecting the overwhelming support many polls have shown in the years since the Sandy Hook massacre.

That's who we fight for. And with 90% of Americans and 80% of gun owners on our side, we can't lose. Let's get to it.

“After a long career in the restaurant business, I am ready to take on a new challenge as a franchise owner,” said Craig Tappin, Uncle Maddio’s franchisee. “I was so impressed by the fresh ingredients and homemade pizza, as well as the management team that has set up a franchise operating system designed for success. I knew it was the perfect opportunity for me to bring Uncle Maddio’s to my hometown. I have always planned to return to Denver and now is the right time to do so.”

“The greater Denver area is an important market for our company," said Matt Andrew, Uncle Maddio's CEO. "Craig Tappin is an experienced restauranteur and well-respected industry leader, which makes the Castle Rock restaurant the perfect place to launch Uncle Maddio's new design."

Uncle Maddio’s is the first fast casual pizza brand to introduce a customer journey experience where customers order and pay first. The new design allows flexibility for customers to either order, pay and sit down at their table or order pay and watch their pizza being made in Uncle Maddio’s open kitchen.

Guests will use the simplified digital media boards and vibrant food photography to select a Create Your Own, Chef’s Creation pizza, salad or Foldwich. The new menu boards allow the restaurant to change the menu according to day parts and offers.
