A Movie Theater Hired Gun-Carrying Actors In Tactical Gear To Storm An 'Iron Man 3' Screening

A Movie Theater Hired Gun-Carrying Actors In Tactical Gear To Storm An 'Iron Man 3' Screening A Missouri movie theater hired a number of people to dress in tactical gear and storm an "Iron Man 3" screening with fake weapons opening weekend.

ABC News 17 reports Goodrich Capital 8 Theaters in Jefferson City, Missouri wanted to get moviegoers excited for the film by dressing people up to resemble S.H.I.E.L.D. members, part of the Marvel world's secret intelligence agency.

(You can see the photo of the people here.)

Instead, several people dialed 911, prompting local police to respond.

The stunt comes less than a year after the "Dark Knight Rises" shootings at a theater in Aurora, Colorado during a midnight shooting.

Captain Doug Shoemaker told ABC 17 News they received calls about a man dressed in body armor with a rifle walking into the theater.

"Everything was in place, it's the opening night of a superhero movie, it's somebody walking in all-dark clothes, everything pointed to bad things about to happen," said Shoemaker. "There's really no good that can come of this."

A retired Army war veteran told the affiliate the event triggered his post-traumatic stress disorder.

Another person at the showing commented on the theater's Facebook page that he "and 99.5% of the other people there realized they were S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives carrying fake guns."

Theater manager Bob Wilkins defended the stunt to ABC 17 News saying it was planned for months in advance and that many were entertained.

Wilkins did say the theater took the Aurora, Colorado shooting into consideration.

The theater has since posted the following apology to its Facebook page:

"We apologize and are sympathetic to those who felt they were in harm’s way with our character promotion for Iron Man 3. This was not a publicity stunt. We have worked with the Cosplacon group on many movies to dress up and help entertain our customers. We have had many complaints about the members dressed specifically as S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives carrying fake guns. We didn’t clearly tell our customers and some people didn’t realize it was for entertainment purposes only. We apologize that police were called to come out to our theater. We have a wonderful working relationship with the Jefferson City Police Department. Going forward we will take the necessary steps to make sure this doesn’t happen again. Security and safety for our customers is our number one priority."

Despite the tragedies at Aurora and, most recently, Newtown, one movie theater manager thought it’d be great entertainment if he hired an actor to walk into the venue in full tactical gear and carrying a fake gun. The publicity stunt ended with horrified patrons calling 911, and a police (and SWAT) intervention, ABC17 reports. The incident took place at the Goodrich Capital 8 Theaters in Jefferson City last weekend, during the “Iron Man 3” premiere. Reported by Softpedia 3 hours ago.

Prince Harry Charms Crowd At Sedalia Golf Club

0

SEDALIA, Colo. -- Britain's Prince Harry charmed dozens of dignitaries, British expatriates, students and military officers at a cocktail party welcoming him to Colorado Friday night and then joined the crowd in singing "Happy Birthday" to Olympian Missy Franklin, who was celebrating her 18th birthday.

Harry went table-to-table for about an hour at the party at the Sanctuary Golf Club south of Denver. He asked Franklin, attending with her parents, for a rundown of her medals while he took some ribbing about the shrieking female fans who greeted his arrival in Washington from U.S. Reps. Cory Gardner and Mike Coffman.

At one table on the patio looking out over the rolling hills toward Pike's Peak, Harry said he was glad to see a group of Americans and Britons having Pimm's Cups, summery English drinks, together.

Deborah Read Fowler, a Briton living in Colorado, said the prince had obviously done his research about the company they all worked for.

"And he goes to Afghanistan. How can you not respect that?" she said.

His effect on the ladies was on display in a more muted way here.

Several men brought their 20-something daughters to the reception. And when Harry went over to meet members of the band, two members acknowledged they were too overwhelmed to really carry on a conversation.

University of Denver students Jenna Bainbridge of Castle Rock and Samantha Barrasso of Aurora said the prince jokingly asked them what performers they were better than.

"He's very charismatic. He obviously doesn't hide his personality. And he's handsome, so that doesn't hurt," Bainbridge said.

Harry is in Colorado to attend the Warrior Games this weekend in Colorado Springs. More than 200 wounded servicemen and women from the U.S. and Britain will participate.

The visit is part of a weeklong visit to the United States that will also include trips to parts of New Jersey damaged by Superstorm Sandy. He'll end his trip by playing in the Sentebale Polo Cup match in Greenwich, Conn.

Harry recently spent 20 weeks in Afghanistan as co-pilot gunner on an Apache attack helicopter and has been a big supporter of charities to help wounded service members.

On Saturday he'll attend the opening ceremonies for the Warrior Games at the Olympic Training Center. That event is closed to the public but spectators are welcome to attend the event competitions, which are free, starting Sunday. Harry is scheduled to attend Sunday's public cycling event at the Air Force Academy.

He plans another outing with wounded military personnel later this year when he participates in the South Pole Allied Challenge. Teams from Britain, Australia, Britain, Canada and the United States will race 208 miles to the pole. Reported by Huffington Post 1 hour ago.

Same-Sex Marriage Supporters, Opponents Rally in Fox Valley

Same-Sex Marriage Supporters, Opponents Rally in Fox Valley Patch Batavia, IL --

Over a hundred opponents of same-sex marriage gathered Saturday morning outside state Rep. Stephanie Kifowit’s Aurora office, where they also faced off with gay rights activists staging a counter protest.

The Defend Marriage rally was organized by the Illinois Family Institute, a conservative non-profit that opposes Senate Bill 10—the Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act—which was passed by the Illinois Senate in February and is awaiting a vote by the House.

A counter-protest was organized by local pro-LGBTQ group Fox Valley Pride with assistance from Illinois Unites and the Gay Liberation Network, said Jim Lausier, who was the primary organizer for this protest.

Lausier said he wishes there was a larger group presence at the rally, but the GLBT community was “spread thin to address three simultaneous rallies,” all happening on Saturday morning.

Kifowit, a Democrat, told Patch in her November 2012 campaign questionnaire that she supports marriage equality.

“Everyone should enjoy the same civil rights and no one should face discrimination because of their sexual orientation,” Kifowit wrote. “I believe the intent behind Illinois’ recently enacted civil unions law has done just that.”

Kifowit did not make an appearance at the rally outside her office.

“We came to (Stephanie Kifowit) and we asked her to please vote no on this legislation,” said Dan Haas, a pastor in Aurora for over 33 years and director of ministry at Total Living Network. “We need to be sure that our state representatives understand our concerns and why we are concerned about that.”

The two opposing sides spanned the length of Montgomery road in front of Kifowit’s office, leaving several feet of space between the two parties.

The IFI played patriotic music and waved American flags on their corner, and the pro-LGBTQ received numerous “honks” of support from passing vehicles and covered their corner with a myriad of rainbow colors.

“Kids do best with a family that loves them,” said Aurora resident Kelly Imgrund, referring to the “Kids do best with a mom and dad” sign that members of the AFI were displaying. “We need to show our support.”

As representatives from the IFI and other conservatives spoke about the importance of marriage between "one man, one woman," the around 40 pro-LGBTQ supporters chanted, “What do we want? Marriage equality! When do we want it? Now!"  Reported by Patch 18 hours ago.
