EQS Group-News: King's Bay Gold Corp. / Key word(s): Interim Report/Miscellaneous

28.02.2017 / 13:10 --------------------

*King's Bay Commences Helicopter-borne VTEM Plus Survey over Lynx Lake Copper-Cobalt Project, Southeastern Labrador*

Vancouver, *February 28^th*, 2017 - *King's Bay Gold Corporation (TSX.V: KBG), (FSE: KGB1)*, operating as *"King's Bay"*, a mining exploration and development company based in Vancouver Canada is pleased to announce that Geotech Ltd., of Aurora, Ontario has commenced a 382 line kilometer helicopter-borne VTEM(TM) (Versatile Time Domain Electromagnetic) Geophysical Survey over King's Bay's 100% owned Lynx Lake Copper-Cobalt Project in southeastern Labrador.

Geotech Ltd. has advised King's Bay that it expects to complete this survey by mid-April. The VTEM(TM) system has a penetration depth of over 800 m, with a low Base Frequency (30Hz) for penetration through conductive overburden cover, coupled with a 2-3 meters High Spatial Resolution. This system is advertised to be able to delineate potential drill hole targets from the airborne results. In addition, it also has excellent resistivity discrimination to enable the detection of weak anomalies.

Geotech has flown more than 3,000,000 line-kilometres worldwide with its proprietary and industry-leading VTEM(TM) system with confirmed results in many different deposit and host geologies.

Kevin Bottomley states "This a very exciting time for the company. The commencement of our VTEM(TM) survey over Lynx Lake property is a extremely important step towards identifying high priority drill targets."

*Lynx Lake Project*

The Lynx Lake Copper-Cobalt Property consists of 959 mineral claims encompassing a land area of approximately 240 square kilometers, located 100 kilometers southeast of Happy Valley Goose Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador. Historic grab sampling on the property has returned samples assaying up to *1.39% Cu, 0.94% Co, 0.21% Ni* and *6.5g/t Ag*. Government regional low resolution residual magnetic surveys and preliminary handheld electromagnetic surveys done by local prospectors have shown strong conductors beneath the overburden, and provide incentive to explore the area further for additional subsurface mineralization. The Project is located directly adjacent to a 3 phase powerline and the Trans-Labrador Highway.

First Solar Images From NOAA’s GOES-16 Satellite

0
0
The first images from the Solar Ultraviolet Imager or SUVI instrument aboard NOAA’s GOES-16 satellite have been successful, capturing a large coronal hole on Jan. 29, 2017.

The sun’s 11-year activity cycle is currently approaching solar minimum, and during this time powerful solar flares become scarce and coronal holes become the primary space weather phenomena – this one in particular initiated aurora throughout the polar regions. Coronal holes are areas where the sun’s corona appears darker because the plasma has high-speed streams open to interplanetary space, resulting in a cooler and lower-density area as compared to its surroundings.

SUVI is a telescope that monitors the sun in the extreme ultraviolet wavelength range. SUVI will capture full-disk solar images around-the-clock and will be able to see more of the environment around the sun than earlier NOAA geostationary satellites.

The sun’s upper atmosphere, or solar corona, consists of extremely hot plasma, an ionized gas. This plasma interacts with the sun’s powerful magnetic field, generating bright loops of material that can be heated to millions of degrees. Outside hot coronal loops, there are cool, dark regions called filaments, which can erupt and become a key source of space weather when the sun is active. Other dark regions are called coronal holes, which occur where the sun’s magnetic field allows plasma to stream away from the sun at high speed. The effects linked to coronal holes are generally milder than those of coronal mass ejections, but when the outflow of solar particles is intense – can pose risks to satellites in Earth orbit.

The solar corona is so hot that it is best observed with X-ray and extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) cameras. Various elements emit light at specific EUV and X-ray wavelengths depending on their temperature, so by observing in several different wavelengths, a picture of the complete temperature structure of the corona can be made. The GOES-16 SUVI observes the sun in six EUV channels.

Data from SUVI will provide an estimation of coronal plasma temperatures and emission measurements which are important to space weather forecasting. SUVI is essential to understanding active areas on the sun, solar flares and eruptions that may lead to coronal mass ejections which may impact Earth. Depending on the magnitude of a particular eruption, a geomagnetic storm can result that is powerful enough to disturb Earth’s magnetic field. Such an event may impact power grids by tripping circuit breakers, disrupt communication and satellite data collection by causing short-wave radio interference and damage orbiting satellites and their electronics. SUVI will allow the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center to provide early space weather warnings to electric power companies, telecommunication providers and satellite operators.

SUVI replaces the GOES Solar X-ray Imager (SXI) instrument in previous GOES satellites and represents a change in both spectral coverage and spatial resolution over SXI.

NASA successfully launched GOES-R at 6:42 p.m. EST on Nov. 19, 2016, from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida and it was renamed GOES-16 when it achieved orbit. GOES-16 is now observing the planet from an equatorial view approximately 22,300 miles above the surface of Earth.

NOAA’s satellites are the backbone of its life-saving weather forecasts. GOES-16 will build upon and extend the more than 40-year legacy of satellite observations from NOAA that the American public has come to rely upon. Reported by Eurasia Review 13 hours ago.

The mesmerising northern lights made an appearance Wednesday evening in the northern parts of Scotland and England.

Social media flooded with pictures of the beautiful light show, which scientists say could become a less frequent sight in the UK.

In an interview with the BBC, Mathew Owens of Reading University said the sun's cyclical activity could be heading toward its lowest period of activity in 300 years.

"If so, the northern lights phenomenon would become a natural show exclusive to the polar regions, due to a lack of solar wind forces that often make it visible at lower latitudes," said Owens. Read more...

FYI, That Silk Shirt You're Wearing Is Made From Worm Spit

0
0
Chances are you’re aware that silk comes from silkworms. They have the word silk in their name, for crying out loud. But did you know that silk ― luxurious, expensive silk ―  comes from inside a worm’s mouth?

Yes, that’s right. Silk is produced from a worm’s salivary glands.

Tom Turpin, professor of entomology at Purdue University, explained how it all works to The Huffington Post. “Their glands produce it, it’s extruded out in the salivary gland and when they get ready to pupate, once they are done feeding, then they spin the cocoon,” he said.
Silkworms feed on mulberry leaves for 42 days, after which, Turpin explains, one worm can spin up to “3,000 yards of silk,” all in one strand. That’s why, he said, killing the silkworms is a necessary part of the silk making process.

Yes, killing the silkworms.

“Once the caterpillar is done spinning, it will literally release a chemical that will sort of dissolve the silk so the moth can get out,” he said. “If they extrude the chemical it will dissolve one end, leaving you with 3,000 one-yard pieces of silk rather than one piece of silk 3,000 yards long.”

The silkworms, once fully wrapped in their silk cocoons, are poured into boiling water, which kills the worm and binds the silk together. “You pick off the anchor strands, which are just knots of silk and then you pull out the two lines of silk and start running it around a wheel,” Turpin said. While Turpin said the boiling water method is commonly used on a small scale for silk-making hobbyists, the practice can also be done by steaming or putting the cocoons in the sun, as a video from Vox explains.

There are, however, ways to produce silk in a more humane way. Aurora Silk, a company that calls itself the “#1 source for eco-friendly, organic, fair-trade, natural dyes and fabrics for over 45 years,” makes “peace silk,” made from empty cocoons. Phoebe Holland, one of the Aurora Silk’s employees, explains that even though the fibers will have come apart from the moth breaking the cocoon, the silk fibers are pulled apart, twisted and spun, rather than reeled, as they are when it is one continuous fiber.

So why wouldn’t more producers go the humane route when it comes to making silk? In part, it comes down to aesthetics. “Reeled silk makes that shimmery satin look and feel you associate with silk, while spun silk is harder,” Holland said.

On the other hand, when asked about people who take issue with killing the worms to get the silk, Turpin said there is “a long range of attitudes people have about these sorts of things,” and that he believes “everyone can believe what they want.”

Whatever your stance on the production, one thing rings true: Silk is way more complex and fascinating than we ever imagined.

Lawsuits could mean that the Silicon Valley self-driving bubble is about to pop (TSLA, GOOGL)

0
0
Lawsuits could mean that the Silicon Valley self-driving bubble is about to pop (TSLA, GOOGL) The gloves are coming off in the Silicon Valley race to dominate the self-driving world.

Google's Waymo is now suing Uber and its recent acquisition, Otto, for stealing technology secrets.

As Business Insider's Alexei Oreskovic and Danielle Muoio reported on Thursday:

At the center of the suit is Anthony Levandowski, one of the original members of the team that worked on Google's self-driving-car project. In January 2016, Levandowski left Google after nine years to found Otto, a startup focused on autonomous trucks. Six months later, Uber acquired Otto in a deal valued at $680 million. Waymo alleges that Levandowski "downloaded over 14,000 highly confidential and proprietary design files for Waymo’s various hardware systems, including designs of Waymo’s LiDAR and circuit board" six weeks before resigning from Google.

This lawsuit follows one filed by Tesla for similar reasons. Tesla recently sued the former head of the Google Car project, Chris Urmson, and Sterling Anderson, who ran Tesla's Autopilot program from 2015-2016, for stealing the electric automaker's intellectual property in pursuit of a new venture, Aurora Innovation.

In the lawsuit, there was this interesting language:

The Autopilot features that are built into every Tesla vehicle, and continually updated through free over-the-air updates, are widely regarded as the most advanced, safest, and most reliable technology in the autonomous area. In their zeal to play catch-up, traditional automakers have created a get-rich-quick environment. Small teams of programmers with little more than demoware have been bought for as much as a billion dollars. Cruise Automation, a 40-person firm, was 12 purchased by General Motors in July 2016 for nearly $1 billion. In August 2016, Uber acquired Otto, another self-driving startup that had been founded only seven months earlier, in a deal worth more than $680 million.

Anderson and his business partners ... decided to take a run at a similar fortune.

Compared with the ascent of the electric car roughly a decade ago, the stakes seem much higher for autonomous technology. There were some legal skirmishes back then, particularly when it came to Tesla's now-CEO Elon Musk and one of the company's founders, Martin Eberhard.

But most of the electric-car startups from back then either folded or went bankrupt, leaving more-or-less Tesla alone in the space. The big automakers created some EVs, such as Nissan's Leaf, but their sales have been disappointing. In fact, to stoke the market, Tesla open-sourced its EV patents in 2014.

Tesla's battery and drivetrain technologies are distinctive (thousands of lithium-ion cells wired together, a rather more monolithic design), but electric vehicles are hardly a huge innovation — they've been around in one form or another for a century.

Self-driving tech is a different story, and no one is interested in sharing.

*Building a perfect bubble*

Taken together, the Waymo and Tesla lawsuits strongly indicate that there's a self-driving bubble developing in Silicon Valley. With less than a year of work, some engineers can sell out for hundreds of millions or a cool billion.

That's the going rate for self-driving tech that works, according to Ford's Chief Technical Officer Raj Nair. Ford just took a majority stake, to the tune of $1 billion, in Argo AI, a machine learning startup, to advance its own ambitious self-driving efforts, and the company says that $1 billion is about what it costs to develop so-called "level 4" autonomy, which is one stage shy of the vehicle completely driving itself, with no human input.

Entrepreneurs can smell money and quick, lucrative exits. The traditional carmakers are flush with cash after several years of booming US sales, and they don't want to get left behind in the race to bring self-driving cars to market. (They were far more low-key when it came to electric cars, effectively letting Tesla assume all the early risk.)

And a new arrival like Uber is riding high on its nosebleed valuation, more than $60 billion. Not moving into self-driving tech now would be catastrophic if the market shifts hard in that direction over the next decade and ride-hailing services are saddled with a massive commitment to high-cost human drivers — or have to pay up to license autonomous technologies, which is an integral part of Ford's business plan.

In other words, fear has broken out. That, rather than a meaningful market for self-driving vehicles, is swelling the bubble. Now that the lawyers have entered the picture, that bubble could be close to popping.

As autonomous vehicles have ascended and surpassed electric cars as the futuristic preoccupation of choice in the tech industry, I've experienced the ominous feeling that I've seen this movie before. While there are impressive self-driving experiments being conducted all across the USA, the technology is far from being commercialized.

The ambition is present, but it was also there when we saw numerous electric-car startups rise and fall after the financial crisis. As it turned out, while people wanted Teslas, they didn't want electric cars — sales today only amount to about 1% of the global market.

The frenzy to get bought and get bought in a hurry signals that self-driving cars could fall victim to a similar dynamic. If we see more high-profile lawsuits, I'm going to get even more worried.
