Leading Energy IoT company closes successful year with new investment, new customers and prestigious “Grid Edge” awards from Platts Global Energy and Greentech Media

(PRWEB) January 06, 2017

Blue Pillar, the only Internet of Things (IoT) provider to connect all Energy Things™, today announced $10 million in financing from new investors GXP Investments and Elevate Ventures alongside existing investors EnerTech Capital, Allos Ventures, Arsenal Venture Partners, and Claremont Creek Ventures.

2016 was a groundbreaking year for Blue Pillar. The Blue Pillar Aurora® platform was installed at large energy providers and commercial facilities such as Walmart, Target, and Comcast as well as at higher education campuses, including University of Hawaii and Texas A&M University. As a result, the company won the Grid Edge-Energy Management award from Platts Global Energy. This awards program honors only the leaders and innovators from the energy industry. Blue Pillar was one of 18 finalists chosen from 170 nominations representing 30 countries. In April, Blue Pillar was one of 20 companies to receive Greentech Media’s Grid Edge award – an honor bestowed upon only the most disruptive companies responsible for positively impacting the U.S. electricity industry. These awards and new customers further validated Blue Pillar’s increasingly important role in bringing forward grid edge transformation.

“Blue Pillar is leading a historic energy industry transformation by connecting distributed energy resources (DERs) at the grid edge on behalf of energy providers and their commercial customers contributing to an impressive 400 percent growth in their business over the last five years,” said Bill Kingsley of EnerTech Capital. “Through their innovative approach, existing and new energy assets such as solar, storage and fuel cells are linked into a digitally enabled architecture, enabling control and two-way power flows. We believe Blue Pillar is well positioned to compete in an Energy IoT market reshaping how customers consume electricity.”

According to Navigant Research, “a new landscape is emerging in which a more sophisticated two-way grid of networked DERs will pave the way for an Energy Cloud ecosystem valued at $1.3 trillion in new annual industry revenue by 2030.” Surging demand for energy networks that provide connectivity, control, and remote monitoring is driving Blue Pillar’s business.

"Blue Pillar’s ability to network DERs and other energy systems into an IoT technology platform that is open to third party software applications will allow electricity providers to offer new, innovative energy services to their largest commercial and industrial customers,” said Dennis Odell, Senior Director at GXP Investments. “We are excited to be joining this team.”

“The vision of Blue Pillar has always relied upon what could be achieved with ubiquitous access to behind-the-meter energy information and secure automated control over DERs and systems,” said Tom Willie, CEO of Blue Pillar. “For us, this latest investment, expansion to new customers and prestigious industry awards, represent validation of the vision. We look forward to working with our investors and customers to rapidly bring much needed disruption to the energy industry.”

Blue Pillar connects the Energy Things that power our world. Apple may not take part in the annual Consumer Electronics Show, but the event is still filled with all kinds of Apple-related accessories from third-party vendors. Some aren't so great or are the same old thing, but others are novel, fun, and bring something new to the table.

For this video, we spent a couple of days exploring the show floor to find some of the best Apple accessories of CES 2017.
Subscribe to the MacRumors YouTube channel for more videos.

Incipio showed off a new iPhone 7 case that brings back the headphone jack. The case itself is rather thin, but there is a large chin at the bottom to accommodate both the headphone jack and and a Lightning charging port.

Griffin displayed its BreakSafe cables for the MacBook and MacBook Pro. The cables, including a new 100W model for the 2016 MacBook Pro, are designed to replace Apple's MagSafe connector, offering the same breakaway functionality over USB Type-C.

Henge Docks debuted a number of products to complement the new MacBook Pro. The original Vertical Dock allows you to dock your computer off to the side of a monitor, while the new Horizontal Dock allows you to securely dock the MacBook Pro without compromising usability. The Horizontal Dock features pressure sensors to know when the computer is present, and it then automatically connects itself with the computer. This dock has 13 ports available including HDMI, USB Type-A, and Ethernet. Henge Docks also announced the Tethered Dock, which gives you a station to connect multiple cables and charge your MacBook.

CMRA showed off a prototype Apple Watch band that features a front and rear-facing camera, but it didn't have a functional model on hand. We only saw a dummy unit, so we'll have to wait to see the band in action. The CMRA is already available for pre-order, but won't ship out until later this year.

Finally, NanoLeaf displayed its colorful array of Aurora lights. These HomeKit-enabled lights can be displayed on a wall and each individual light can be controlled through the Aurora app. NanoLeaf also demoed the new Aurora Rhythm sound sensor that allows the lights to react to music and sound.

If you missed them, make sure to check out the videos we did at CES Unveiled and Pepcom, two events that had tons of cool Apple products. You'll also want to check out our full CES coverage, which has dozens more accessories worth looking at.Tag: CES 2017

Dr. Mark Braasch now accepts new patients for the HealthyStart™ pediatric dentistry system, with or without a referral. As a trusted pediatric dentist in Aurora, CO, Dr. Braasch is proud to offer this innovative program that treats and corrects common bite issues and other childhood disorders.

Aurora, CO (PRWEB) January 09, 2017

Dr. Mark Braasch, respected pediatric dentist in Aurora, CO, now welcomes new patients to Meadow Hills Dental for the FDA approved HealthyStart™ program, without first requiring a referral. This treatment is ideal for pediatric patients who have interruptive sleeping habits, bite issues and other disorders common to children.

HealthyStart is an innovative program that helps straighten teeth in young children without the need for braces. Unresolved dental issues such as crooked teeth and bite issues, or malocclusion, can contribute to a variety of unpleasant and common conditions, including difficulty sleeping and behavioral issues. The goal of the system is to identify the root cause of common symptoms like these in children. Those who participate in the program benefit from non-invasive and non-pharmaceutical treatments that develop the airway, promote proper oral habits and jaw development, and result in straighter teeth without the use of braces.

A special device is used to help painlessly guide the child’s teeth into alignment as they develop. The device comfortably covers the top and bottom teeth and helps rectify crowding, crossbite and other alignment and spacing issues. It can also be used to modify the placement of the lower jaw to open the airway and encourage greater oxygen intake during sleep. The device is so successful because it takes advantage of a child’s naturally-growing mouth during the oral development stage of life. Parents with children as young as two years old are encouraged to learn more about the program and how it can benefit their children.

As an experienced and highly trained pediatric dentist in Aurora, CO, Dr. Braasch understands the many benefits of the HealthyStart program for children. Parents who want to help their children develop healthy oral and sleep habits are encouraged to call Meadow Hills Dental at 720-325-2460 to learn more about this system and schedule a consultation.

US man gets 22 years in jail for stealing TV remote and other burglaries

0
0
A 35-year-old man has been jailed for 22 years by a US court for stealing a TV remote as he "repeatedly thumbed his nose at the law".

Eric Bramwell, 35, of Wheaton, Illinois, had been found guilty last year of burglary and was eligible for an extended-term sentence because of his past criminal history, according to prosecutors.

Authorities alleged that Bramwell entered the common area of an apartment building on August 1, 2015, and stole the universal remote to the television set, the Chicago Tribune reported.

But, prosecutors say, Bramwell dropped a glove while at the complex, and a DNA sample taken from it was matched to Bramwell's DNA in a database of convicted felons, which led to his arrest.

He was alleged to have committed similar thefts of remotes and televisions in other apartment complexes in Wheaton, Lisle, Aurora, Bloomingdale, Downers Grove and Oakbrook Terrace, prosecutors said.

"Mr Bramwell's illegal activity and his history have finally caught up with him," State's Attorney Robert Berlin was quoted as saying.
"Regardless of what was stolen, Mr Bramwell repeatedly thumbed his nose at the law. He took what he wanted time and time again and expected to avoid the consequences. That's not how it works, as Mr. Bramwell has now found out," he said.

Judge Robert Miller sentenced Bramwell last Wednesday. He will be required to serve half the sentence before he is eligible for parole.

According to court files, Miller had in November sentenced Bramwell to six months in jail for contempt for using profane language in court.

Gun Violence in PG-13 Movies Continues Rise Past R-Rated Films

0

Gun Violence in PG-13 Movies Continues Rise Past R-Rated Films As gun violence continues to escalate in the U.S. — so does gun violence in movies, a new study shows.

The amount of gun violence in top-grossing PG-13 movies has continued to exceed gun violence that appears in the biggest box-office R-rated films, according to an updated study by Annenberg Public Policy Center (APPC) of the University of Pennsylvania.

The latest study updates findings the group published in 2012 and covers films through 2015.

*Also Read:* 'Star Wars

Top recent offenders are “The Divergent Series: Insurgent” (2015), “Mission Impossible – Rogue Nation” (2015), and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” (2015) — all three containing eight, five-minute gun segments in which a character shoots and hits another character.

The new numbers resurface the age-old question, one that still hasn’t been sufficiently answered: Is gunplay in movies a form of permission or even inspiration for such violence in real life? Or is the preponderance of firearms on the big screen simply a mirror of our times?

Researchers can’t help but tie these latest findings to an increase in real-life gun violence in America.

*Also Read:* Watch Amy Schumer's Previously Axed Gun Violence Sketch (Video)

“We know that kids who watch a lot of violence are more likely to be aggressive,” said Dan Romer, research director at APPC. But, he told TheWrap, there isn’t enough money being spent to study the causal relation.

“We know people who see actors smoking in movies are more likely to start smoking, so why wouldn’t we think actors with guns would have the same effect?” Romer said. “Congress gets intimidated by the NRA — they are afraid to go after any evidence that shows guns are bad.”

*Also Read:* Watch TheWrap's GrillChat on Guns and Violence in Hollywood (Video)

Add to the list of PG-13 offenders is 2016’s “Suicide Squad,” which wasn’t measured in this latest study but that Romer says is “very violent and uses a lot of guns as weapons and they don’t show the harm.” He’s confident the title will make it in the next round.

The study emphasizes that children of all ages can see PG-13 movies and that films with the rating are notable for “erasure of the consequences” of gun violence, including bloodshed and suffering.

But that’s what happens when guns go off in the real world.

*Also Read:* Anti-Gun Group Tricks Audience Into Watching Real Gun Violence Footage (Video)

It’s a little more than a week into 2017 and the U.S. has already played host to more than five mass shootings, including the attack on a Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, airport last week that killed five people.

Counting the concentrated rise in gun crimes in Chicago last year, the gun murder rate has actually been relatively unchanged over the past 15 years. But that’s nothing to be proud of, Romer said. Non-fatal shootings have increased in that time, according to the CDC’s National Electronic Injury Surveillance System.

Romer suggests the flat death rate has more to do with medical advances than anything else. “The use of guns is not going down,” he said. “The medical system is better able to save peoples’ lives now. Trauma centers keep people alive at higher rates — especially in cities.”

*Also Read:* New York Times Blasts Republicans for 'Callously' Ducking Gun Violence

And on average, there are nearly 12,000 gun homicides in the U.S. every year — more than 25 times the average of other countries — according to CDC figures.

That’s why Romer and his colleagues continue to raise their concerns over the prevalence of such violence on the big screen.

Of course, the bulk of the blame cannot rest on the shoulders of moviemakers. But the disparity in the ratings system — where nudity and sex merit R ratings more readily than gunplay — can seem glaring in times like these.

*Also Read:* Jennifer Hudson Speaks Out Against Gun Violence: 'This Is Reality for Me'

The Motion Picture Association of America backs its ratings system, arguing it reflects parents’ own concerns. “This system has withstood the test of time because as American parents’ sensitivities change, so too does the rating system,” said MPAA spokesperson Chris Ortman in a statement obtained by TheWrap. “Elements such as violence, language, drug use, and sexuality are continually re-evaluated through surveys and focus groups to mirror contemporary concern and to better assist parents in making the right family viewing choices.”

Indeed, one of the top, most recent offenders among PG-13 movies tabulated in the new study was the highest-grossing movie of all time in North America: “The Force Awakens.” Clearly, American parents weren’t compelled to stop their kids from watching it.

A large number of blaster shots to stormtroopers may not seem as damning as depictions of real-world weaponry, as seen in “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation,” which ties the “Star Wars” movie in number of five-minute gun segments.

*Also Read:* Jennifer Aniston, Julianne Moore, Amy Schumer Stand With Obama to 'End Gun Violence' (Video)

“It’s more of a fantasy weapon, so one could argue that makes it less disturbing and less likely to instill modeling, having kids think they can do the same thing,” Romer offered.

Other recent PG-13 movies that were noted in the study for their gunplay include, “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2,” “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” and “Ant-Man.” (See the entire list here.)

As for a PG-13 fantasy movie that got it right, Romer pointed to “Doctor Strange.” “A lot of the violence — none of it involved guns,” he said. “I wish Hollywood would go after that format more than it has with other comic book characters.”

“The Continuing Rise of Gun Violence in PG-13 Movies, 1985-2015” is available online at the journal Pediatrics.
