Live Report: Bjork - Hammersmith Apollo, London

Live Report: Bjork - Hammersmith Apollo, London A performance of great strength, yet enormous vulnerability...

'Vulnicara', *Bjork’s* ninth studio album, is a testing listen from subject to production. The artist, who thrives on working in the abstract and esoteric, has created a true masterpiece expressing the crushing nature of heartbreak. As listeners we are invited in to share her pain and reminded that this woman who is repeatedly hailed as “other worldly” is in fact a mere mortal. The narrative of this audio diary reveals her candid thoughts on the break down of her marriage with artist Matthew Barney. She walks you through the emotionally harrowing transition from the beginnings of the cracks in the relationship, the divide of her family and her own personal healing process. Each track cruelly summons the dull ache of loss in the depths of your stomach.

Coinciding with the her live performances, Bjork is also exhibiting at the Somerset House enabling fans to interact with the latest in virtual reality technology, yet interestingly for her live performance she shies away from the technology she embraces in Bjork Digital. The artist who once proclaimed as a teen that she detested classical music was now on stage surrounded by the magnificent Aurora Orchestra led by conductor, Andrew Gourlay, and throughout out the performance Bjork articulates her heartbreak in string arrangements that come as a distraction from her sorrow.

- - -

Bjork flutters on stage like a UV moth adorned with the designs of James Merry as the strings notes guide you into melancholy for the opening track, ‘Stonemilker’. Dancing like a wooden ballerina she demands “emotional respect”. The combination of orchestral strings and Bjork’s attire along with the night divided into two sets she has created a scene more familiar for an Opera singer than critically adored pop star.

The string version of ‘Lionsong’ reveals a softer tenderness to the original harsh textures added by Venezuelan co-producer, Arca. The rawness continues with ‘History Of Touches’, documenting the bitter sweet “last time” with a soon to be ex-lover. Bjork’s voice sways in shushed gentleness as she lullabies the ghosts of her post-coital self and ex-husband.

The violins cut through abruptly, waking us from this lingering wistfulness. It’s like being plunged into cold water. In the chronological tale we are brought to the chapter of ‘Notget’ and the relationship is now over, “We carry the same wound / But have different cures”. She summons strength from the momentum of each bow stroke; each note dragging as her voice roaring louder than before with unhinged anger.

- - -

- - -

The audiences applaud the art of devastation and after a short interval she returns, demonstrating time heals all. She is now head-to-toe in violent red - a phoenix rising from the ashes. Opening with the ‘Aurora’, the atmosphere shifts and the crowd go from solemn observers to rejoicing fans. The set continues into her past discography and even nods to her role in Dancer In The Dark directed by Lars Von Trier.

Unexpectedly, she dives back into the closely examined relationship with the track ‘Pagan Poetry’, written at a time when the couple were at a much simpler stage, revealing perhaps her wounds are very much still unhealed. She prompts the crowd to retort to her “I Love Him, I Love Him” they bellow back “She Loves Him, She Loves Him”. Either a misconstrued proclamation or confession the mass, it was an uncomfortable revelation to fall on the ears she sang to.

For the encore, the strings failed to recreate the manic nature of techno-infused ‘Pluto’, falling short of the bang the show deserved. With a graceful bow, she simply proclaimed, "Thank you for your interest, I'm really grateful”, and was gone. She left us feeling as if she had more to exclaim but perhaps had revealed too much.

Baywood Hotels Makes Donation to Louisiana Educators After Recent Flooding

Maryland Hospitality Management Company Donates to A+PEL, Benefitting Teachers and Classrooms in Louisiana

New Orleans, Louisiana (PRWEB) September 27, 2016

Baywood Hotels, a Greenbelt, Md. hospitality management company, has teamed up with the Associated Professional Educators of Louisiana (A+PEL) to donate to teachers and classrooms that are in need of supplies after Louisiana’s record-breaking flooding. All contributions will go to teachers impacted by the storm that the Red Cross has called “the worst disaster since Hurricane Katrina."

Baywood Hotels partnered with A+PEL because of the non-profit organization’s 30-year history of contributing to Louisiana and its educators. Baywood Hotels owns and operates hotels in Metairie, New Orleans and Lake Charles, considering itself part of the Louisiana community. Because of the flooding events and recognizing the state's great need, especially within the educational system and for the children, the management company has donated $2,500 to help teachers and students recover.

Dr. Keith Courville, Executive Director of A+PEL, says, “We would like to thank Baywood Hotels and the BEAR program for their $2,500 donation to the Professional Educators of Louisiana, who will distribute 100% of donations to teachers who have lost classroom materials in the floods.”

According to the National Weather Service, there were over 31 inches of rain in a single day, an event that should only occur once every 1,000 years and that has caused over $8.7 billion in damages. While the storm was traveling to Louisiana, it never developed hurricane force winds, so no advisory was issued. Resultantly, no warning was issued and there was no time for preparation.

"Baywood Hotels has had the pleasure of being able to build and operate hotels in the great state of Louisiana, and we felt as though we were watching this devastation happen to our very own," said Chief Operating Officer Rick Fenstemaker. "Often forgotten areas of need in times of crises include the teachers and administrators who struggle to rebuild their own lives, while still doing what is necessary to continue to educate their students. It is our hope that this donation will assist in restoring some sense of normalcy for teachers, parents and students who have been affected by this disaster."

To make a donation to the A+PEL relief fund, please visit their website. For more information about Baywood Hotels and their local efforts, contact Louisiana Area General Manager Colin Dickerson at 225-678-8512.

Unni Turrettini: Profile of an Author

0
0
It's hard to know where Norwegian author Unni Turrettini's life will take her next. Her book, "The Mystery of the Lone Wolf Killer: Anders Behring Breivik and the Threat of Terror in Plain Sight (Pegasus Books, November 16, 2015) about the tragedy of the 2011 Norway attacks, is receiving excellent reviews. In September, she came to Boston and gave a talk about her work at the prestigious Chilton Club. This November 5th, she'll be presenting a TEDx event at Institute Le Rosey, Switzerland. Currently her latest work, a comprehensive analysis of the Nobel Peace Prize, is being represented by Linda Langton of Langtons International Agency, and under consideration with publishers.

We managed to catch up with Unni through Skype, on an early afternoon just outside Oslo, Norway, before her two children returned from school, to talk about her life, her writing, and her worldview.

Unni Turrettini was born and raised in Norway, the daughter of adventurous parents who moved frequently around the country, so she is familiar with all areas of this Scandinavian nation. Her father was an engineer working in mining and oil fields. Because the family moved so often, from the northern border adjacent to Russia to the southern tip of the country, Unni found it easy to adjust and fit in to any new environment.

As a teen, Unni wanted to travel and see the world. She spent a year as an exchange student in Kansas City, Kansas, and learned quite a lot about family life in the American Midwest. She loved her host family and enjoyed her time there immensely. After her trip to the U.S., Unni returned to Norway, and once she was ready, studied law in Paris, France and Boston University in Boston, Massachusetts, and received admission to the New York State bar.

"We just returned to Norway from Switzerland. I spent eleven years there." Unni laughed, "It's the longest I've ever lived in one place! I've been abroad for 20 years. I guess I lack roots, and often feel restless if I'm in one location for too long. Now we are back in Norway. My experiences abroad were great, but it feels good to be back and live on the water. It's peaceful, close to nature, and safe. My kids can have freedom here that they can't always have elsewhere. My oldest can ride his bike, and do stuff on his own."

Unni feels that her time abroad has made her less Norwegian than those who never left the country. She intimately understands American and European cultures that differ radically from typical Norwegian society. It has colored her worldview and she is able to see both the positive and negative prevalent in her native culture, and this insight enables her to incorporate different views and cultural perspectives into her writing and research.

What were you like at school?

"I was a wild girl, forced to conform to the Law of Jante, or Janteloven. Although Norwegian society subscribes to this concept which criticizes individual success and achievements as unworthy, I knew I was different. Even though I was forced to conform to this inflexible rule, I was full of life and a dreamer. I was too loud, too cheerful, too active. I had to force myself not to stand out too much. It's why I left. I didn't feel at home, so instead I went abroad, studied, became an overachiever and made a life away from the Norwegian norm." She sighs. "Norway has changed somewhat, so it was easier to return with my children. The society has opened up somewhat so that individual achievement isn't as suppressed as it used to be."

Is that why you chose to write about Anders Behring Breivik?

"Let me be clear. Anders Behring Breivik is a monster. He slaughtered 77 people and wounded hundreds more. And right now he is getting all the attention he ever wanted. He has an audience, and instead of locking him up and throwing away the key, he still commandeers an audience and media attention.

"It was that it happened so close to home. Who could have thought a home grown terrorist would be in Norway? As I followed the trial, I researched everything I could find on similar killings worldwide."

The Mystery of the Lone Wolf Killer: Anders Behring Breivik and the Threat of Terror in Plain Sight takes on how the Law of Jante could, in some instances, spawn a vile, murderous killer such as Anders Breivik, and not recognize the signs of a domestic terrorism seeking a cause and chaos within a peaceful society. On July 22, 2011, Anders Behring Breivik blew up a government building trying to kill Norway's leadership and then went to Utøya Island where he slaughtered teens and young adults at their summer camp. Unni compares Breivik to other lone-wolf killers, who unlike the Aurora and Sandy Hook killers, were out to prove their ideological superiority by causing as much mass destruction as possible. Tim McVeigh, Eric Rudolph and the Unabomber Ted Kaczynski are all examples that she equates to Breivik.

"If it can happen here, it can happen anywhere." Turrettini explains and indicates that the combination of conditioning and shame that can facilitate the process of becoming a killer, and tries to show it's not just an American problem, but a world problem as well.

What are your ambitions for your writing career?

"I love to write. I feel free doing it and if I am able I plan to continue writing and publishing as a living. I also love public speaking and find it rewarding to touch someone with my words. I believe in empowering people, and since I am better at writing than extemporaneous speaking, I am able to transmit what inspires me.

"I am a truthteller. What I say may not be groundbreaking, but the way I use my words can affect people. I touch people in different ways, and I know that what I say may be difficult, but I am ready to learn from criticism."

Your new book is about the Nobel Peace Prize. What truths are you revealing in this book?

"It is well known that all the other Nobel prizes are awarded by Sweden, but in Alfred Nobel's will, he stipulated that Norway award the Peace Prize. At the time he died, Norway and Sweden were under one King with Norway as the "little brother" country. Nobel thought that humble Norway would choose the best candidates in accordance with his wishes."

This was before Norway became a powerhouse in the energy sector and one of the richest societies per capita in the world. Turrettini's new book delves into the controversial selections for the Peace Prize and examines those choices and the peacemakers who did not receive the prestigious award. It examines how the Peace Prize no longer resembles what Nobel intended and how the power and prestige of the award has gone to the Norwegians' heads, thereby negating the humility and the substance of the prize that Alfred Nobel intended.

"It's been a fascinating study of this prize. I mean, there are only so many prestigious awards. The Academy Awards, the Nobel Prizes, and the Nobel Peace Prize. I wanted to see what happened, who Alfred Nobel really was, and how the evolution of the Peace Prize as a way to promote peace, has become a popularity contest, with Norway choosing the victor."

What is the hardest thing about writing about Nobel?

"It's feeling as if I were betraying Norway. It's not exactly a marketing book for Norway. I am scared of the reaction that the book may get. As a Norwegian I feel responsible and I get what it means to be Norwegian. Still, because of spending so much time out of Norway, I am in the unique position of being able to view the culture from a distance, and provide insights into their sacred cow, the Nobel Peace Prize."

"I guess it comes down to the old adage, 'If liberty means anything at all it's the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.'"

When did you decide to become a writer?

I wasn't too happy being a lawyer in corporate law. So instead, my supportive husband and kids accept that I write and research full time. I love it.

How do you think you've evolved creatively?

There has been so much to learn. My mentor, Bonnie Hearn Hill, has taught me to be braver and to control my writing. I have also found peaceful moments and create space for inspiration. The research is the easy part...I am very left-brained. The writing and thinking or right-brained stuff is much harder. I still need to learn more, so I can keep improving.

What is the easiest thing about writing?

Writing is easier than talking. I am not usually a talker, so I feel more confident when I can write my thoughts down.

What book/s are you reading at present?

Just finished Big Magic, by Elizabeth Gilbert. Well written, and inspirational. Also Robert Bly's Iron John.

How do you relax?

I like to run, take walks, hike, and swim. I do my best thinking in nature and being alone.

What is your favourite motivational phrase?

"Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance."

What is your favourite book?

The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway

Where can you see yourself in 5 years?

Writing articles, books, and more personal stories, fiction based, and motivational, and being involved in making documentaries. International keynote speaker, and more time in the U.S. and the ocean

What is your favourite movie?

Forest Gump. Such a beautiful movie. "You have to do the best with what God gave you" is my favorite quote when his mother tells him this.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Trust yourself, be brave enough, and be kind to yourself, and don't care about what others think.

Which famous persons, living or dead, would you like to meet ?

Oliver Stone, Arianna Huffington, and Martin Luther King Jr.*Unni Turrettini is a fascinating up and coming writer to follow and we'll happily keep you all informed about her progress - that is, if we can keep up with her!*

Dr. Mark Braasch now accepts new patients without a referral for customized dental implant restorations. Dr. Braasch is a trusted dentist in Aurora, CO who is experienced in a variety of cosmetic treatments and services.

Aurora, CO (PRWEB) September 27, 2016

Patients with missing teeth are now welcome to receive personalized dental implant restorations from Dr. Mark Braasch and his team at Meadow Hills Dental, without a referral. As an experienced dentist in Aurora, CO, Dr. Braasch is pleased to offer an attractive, comfortable and long-lasting alternative to other common tooth replacement methods. Implants are a preferred solution for patients who have one or more missing teeth because of their long-lasting functionality and appearance.

More than 170 million Americans have at least one missing tooth. Tooth loss can be caused by injury or a number of medical conditions including gum disease. Tooth replacement solutions can sometimes be uncomfortable and ineffective long-term. Dr. Braasch is proud to offer experienced restorations for dental implants in order to allow more individuals looking for an alternative to traditional treatment methods, an opportunity to receive this preferred, modern tooth replacement option. As a highly respected Aurora, CO, dentist, Dr. Braasch thoroughly examines each patient’s existing teeth to match the implant restoration to surrounding teeth and create a seamless smile.

If a patient is a good candidate for implants, an experienced dental professional strategically places one or more titanium posts into the jaw bone. The posts are then allowed to heal in order to integrate and form a bond with the bone, called osseointegration. This bond not only provides a strong, reliable foundation for the implant but dependability to the patient. When this process is complete, a natural-looking and customized porcelain crown is fastened to the top of each post, designed by Dr. Braasch. Dental implants allow patients to return to their daily lives as if they had a new, natural tooth.

Patients with missing teeth are urged to meet with Dr. Braasch, a highly-trained dentist in Aurora, CO, to find out if they are candidates for dental implants and receive unique restorations to renew their smile. Appointments may be requested by calling Meadow Hills Dental at 720-325-2460.

Videos cover topics ranging from credit scores, to fraud protection, to prepaid cards

WASHINGTON, D.C. (PRWEB) September 28, 2016

Master Your Card (MYC), a community empowerment program sponsored by Mastercard®, today launched a series of four financial education videos for young adults. The videos, which cover credit and credit scores, fraud protection and prepaid cards, are part of MYC’s financial education outreach designed to help young adults understand and take control of their finances.

“As they take greater responsibility for their finances, young adults often confront complex issues like fraud protection and credit scores for the very first time,” said Ravi Aurora, executive director of Community Relations at Mastercard. “Our goal is to help young adults understand these issues and empower them to use electronic payment technology to their advantage. As a result, they will enter and navigate the modern financial world with confidence.”

Through its youth financial education outreach, MYC provides young adults with the information they need to navigate today’s digital economy. Notably, according to a study by PricewaterhouseCoopers, when tested on financial concepts, only 24 percent of millennials demonstrated basic financial knowledge.

“These videos hold tremendous potential to reach the young digital generation with important information about personal finance and electronic payment technology,” said Clayola Brown, president of the A. Philip Randolph Institute and member of MYC’s African-American Advisory Board. “Engaging with young people about their financial future is a crucial, but often challenging feat. These videos start a conversation that helps provide young adults with the information that they need to succeed.”

The youth financial education videos are available on the MYC YouTube channel. Additional resources for young adults are available at http://www.masteryourcardusa.org/youth.
