If the slightest doubt remained that Western media defines “terrorism” solely as violence committed by people of specific ethnic groups and cultures, the reaction to the lorry attack in Nice, France, should have completely erased it.

On Thursday, July 14, the people of Nice were enjoying the promenade that stretches along the shores of the Mediterranean on the inner edge of the city’s crescent bay. At about 4:45 PM EST, during a parade for Bastille Day, Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel drove a white truck onto the boardwalk and drove for almost two miles through the crowd, eventually killing over 80 innocent people. News media was quick to jump to the conclusion this was a terror attack on social media. Without any indication of the motives, identity, or allegiance of the driver, international and national news media:
· Called the incident a “terror attack” at 5:44 PM· “’Terror’ truck attack” at 6:25 PM
Then, after his name- and only his name- was revealed:
· Called the attacker a “terrorist” once his name was revealed with no other information, at 6:29 PM· “Terror attack” at 7:04 PM· “Terror attack” again at 8:36 PM
And on and on. Fox News just went ahead and called its rolling coverage liveblog “Nice terror attack” and was done with the pretense of objectivity and fact gathering.Yet by 9:07 AM EST on July 15 at the latest, some 16 hours after the attack, it was apparent that Lahouaiej-Bouhlel’s motivations were unlikely to be related to religious fundamentalism. As The Telegraph reported:

Bouhlel is believed to come from a town close to Sousse called Msaken and has not travelled back to Tunisia in four years.

BFM TV reports that he was a divorced father-of-three who had become depressed following the breakdown of his marriage, reports Camilla Turner.

He was known to the police for assault with a weapon, domestic violence, threats and robbery but had no previous convictions for terrorism.

At 11:30 AM, The Huffington Post said that l’Expresse was citing sources saying that Lahouaiej-Bouhlel’s was apparently motivated by his anger and insecurity:

Another neighbour, also from Tunisia told L’Express: “On the Thursday night he was drinking with a colleague and they argued. His pal said ‘you’re worth nothing’ and he replied: ‘One day, you’ll hear about me.’”

By 3:23 PM, The Daily Mail was reporting that Lahouaiej-Bouhlel was at the very least not an observant Muslim and instead that he fit the profile of an abusive, angry man:

The 31-year-old - who wreaked terror on the Nice seafront as he turned an evening celebrating Bastille Day into a night of terror in which he murdered 84 innocent people - drank alcohol, ate pork and took drugs.

He never prayed or attended a mosque, and hit his wife - with whom he had three children aged five, three and 18 months - and was in the process of getting a divorce.

It’s hardly the behavior of a radical religious extremist.Further muddying the waters, no Islamic group had claimed responsibility for the attack (ISIS released a statement calling Lahouaiej-Bouhlel a “soldier” on Saturday). There was no indication at all that Lahouaiej-Bouhlel had any connection with any extremist groups, nor that he was in any way religious.

The BBC reported that French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said that Lahouaiej-Bouhlel was a “terrorist without doubt linked to radical Islamism in one way or another.” However, as The Guardian pointed out, “Valls said that he “probably” had some a link to extremism, but admitted the investigation has no evidence at this point.”

But that lack of evidence hasn’t stopped multiple media outlets in the west from continuing to report the incident as a terror attack.
· The Daily News told readers at 2:08 PM that “Car-ramming tactic used in Nice terror attack simple to pull off”· Mother Jones wrote at 2:10 PM that; “One day after a terrorist attack killed at least 84 people in Nice, France, French authorities announced that the man who carried out the attacks had never been suspected of terrorist sympathies.”· The LA Times asked “How many terror attacks can France withstand?” at 2:26 PM· A New York Times analysis posited that the “Attack in Nice, France, Represents Terrorism’s New Reality” at 5:19 PM and subsequently adjusted the headline to “Terror’s New Form: A Threat That Can Be Managed, but Not Erased” by 8:47 PM
All these reports came in after 2 PM EST, well after it had been established that the attacker was not religious and had no known ties to religious extremism; nor was there any evidence he was politically radicalized.So what is a terror attack to today’s media? What can we gather from the reaction to the Nice attack and the labeling of the event in the absence of any verifiable evidence of extremist religious views?

By process of elimination, we can reasonably assume the media’s definition of “terror” does not mean a mass killing of innocent people on western shores; if it did, the media would have called the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary and Aurora Colorado terrorism.

We can reasonably assume “terrorism” does not mean acts of violence taken out against the west for political reasons; if it did, the media would call Andrew Joseph Stack’s suicide attack on an IRS building in Austin, Texas, in 2010 an act of terror.

We can reasonably assume that violence done in the name of religious fundamentalism does not meet the standard for being defined “terror” by the media; if it did, the attacks on Palestinians by Israeli settlers in the name of Judaism would be called terrorism.

We can reasonably assume that violence done against people of a particular race or ethnicity does not meet the standard for being defined “terror” by the media; if it did, Dylann Roof and Micah Johnson would be called “terrorists” and not deranged gunmen or shooters.

No, the media definition of “terror” is quite clear: it means when an individual from the Global south with a Mohammedian name commits an act of violence against the West. As Jim Naureckas writes in FAIR:

It’s hard to escape the conclusion that… when the suspect is an Arab—Lahouaiej Bouhlel was a Tunisian immigrant—then allegations of terrorism require no evidence whatsoever.

That’s exactly right. That’s the rule. Religious extremism, even religious belief, political radicalism- they have nothing to do with it.

The action of “terror” is defined purely by the ethnicity of the actor.

If anyone knows how important it is to have women’s stories told by women, it’s obviously Wonder Woman. 

Gal Gadot, who will star as Diana Prince (also known as Wonder Woman) in the highly anticipated upcoming film about the superhero, recently sat down with Entertainment Weekly to discuss taking on such an iconic role. In the interview, Gadot touched on why it’s crucial to have a woman, Patty Jenkins, in the director’s chair. 

“I think it’s important,” she said. “It’s a story about a girl becoming a woman. I think only a woman, who has been a girl, can be able to tell the story in the right way.”

Gadot, a former combat instructor in the Israeli army, raved about her “curious” and “compassionate” superhero character. She said she felt “very privileged” to provide a role model for girls, something she noticed Hollywood lacked after an incident with her 4-year-old daughter, Alma. 

According to Gadot, Alma admires the bravery and strength of the prince in “Sleeping Beauty.” When Gadot asked about Princess Aurora, her daughter described her as “weak.”

“And I said why do you think she’s weak? And she said,’She’s sleeping the entire movie and the prince comes and kisses her and saves her. She didn’t do anything,’” Gadot said.

The actress noted that it’s about time women are represented in the superhero movie realm, especially considering the many male superheroes young boys can see as role models on the big screen. 

“They have Superman and Batman and Spiderman and the list goes on and on,” she said.” And they are strong and almighty and they are positive and active and proactive.”

Wonder Woman is certainly all those things, too, and Gadot is “honored” to be the woman to bring her to life. 

“I feel that I’ve got the opportunity to set a great role model for girls to look up to a strong, active, compassionate, loving, positive woman and I think it’s so important,” she said.

Historically, part of being a musician is the ability ― usually within reason, sometimes not ― to do whatever you want. Enter the contract rider, which, while detailing technical sound and lighting requirements an artist needs the venue to provide, may also include specific hospitality requests. Candy. Drinks. Seating. Room temperature. Some of these get very specific ― last year, the University of Oklahoma leaked Jack White’s rider that (absurdly) requested homemade guacamole prepared according to a very specific recipe and asked that no bananas be “anywhere in the building.”

We asked artists playing New York’s Panorama Music Festival this weekend to share the craziest rider requests they’ve seen so far ― with or without naming names. (Of course, someone asked for a gun.)

Here they are, in no particular order:

 

The Julie Ruin heard about a pinball machine.“I love that Ryan Adams travels with his own pinball machine and there has to be a place for it in every backstage!”

JDH & Dave P knew a musician who wanted their M&Ms separated by color.“M&M’s separated by color, clean socks, stamped postcards, cartons of cigarettes, you name it.”

 Flosstradamus was there when Dillon Francis asked for a gun.“Dillon Francis asked for a gun once and it was fulfilled in Wisconsin while we were on tour together. We ended up using it in the venue. Bad idea.” ― Curt Cameruci

Grace Potter wanted a blow-up doll.“There’s a bunch. I won’t name names, but, yeah, a blow-up doll. And I will name names, because it was me. Yeah, we wanted to get a blow-up doll for ― it was somebody’s birthday. We wanted to have it set up, and we had to have the venue prep it for us because the birthday was in Alabama, and you couldn’t get blow-up dolls in Alabama, so you had to get it in a different city, I think.”

Tourist judged someone for their specific bottled water request.“I once observed an argument where someone demanded a specific brand of bottled water.”

White Lung asked for a custom cake.“I heard that Juliette Lewis demands that she have a ‘big, black bouncer’ guarding her dressing room, but who knows how true that is. We once requested yellow roses, pink hand towels, lubricant and a cake that says, ‘God Bless White Lung.’ The cake was delicious.”

Silversun Pickups wanted a framed picture of Björk.“A framed picture of Björk and a houseplant. I won’t name names but it rhymes with Riverrun Hiccups.” ― Brian Aubert

Nathaniel Rateliff heard someone ask for caviar.*Listen: “*S.O.B.”

 

Rufus du Sol heard an artist ask for “a portrait of the band painted by a local artist.”*Listen:* “Say a Prayer For Me”

 

Preservation Hall Jazz Band just wants a lot of health food.“I’m actually impressed with how healthy the bands are we tour with. We always have roasted chicken and steamed broccoli on our rider. It’s important to be healthy on the road. The food we get backstage is usually the only meal we get that day, so it’s super important that it’s healthy. I don’t allow sugar, candy or cakes backstage! Is that strange? I think it’s smart.”

Oh Wonder heard about “a February 1967 edition of Playboy.”*Listen:* “Without You”

 

Prinze George saw someone ask for a lot of ginger, but wasn’t into it.“Albert Hammond Jr. chops and chews on large quantities raw ginger before every show. Hadn’t seen that before. He said it’s good for the voice, and I know he’s right, but I tried some of his ginger after a show one night and had to spit it out. It was too intense. I prefer wine.”

Little Scream knew someone who asked for very clean ice cubes.“Diet coke with washed ice cubes. Who asks someone to wash their fucking ice cubes for them? I know who. But I’m not telling!”

The Front Bottoms heard someone ask for “a Dairy Queen burger,” which probably shouldn’t exist.*Listen: *“Help”

 

Ex Hex knew someone who wanted a treadmill.*Listen:* “Waterfall”

 

Daughter just wanted to hang out with puppies.“We used to have a pretty sweet one. We used to ask people to bring their dogs in to visit us as an official rider request ... We never thought anyone would do it, but it actually happened one time, and it was the best day!” ― Elena Tonra

DJ Harvey wants hand towels and water.“Most of them are pretty strange actually, demands for all kinds of things. I ask for some hand towels and lots of water; it’s the tech part where mine can get interesting. A lot of DJs today are brats, won’t play if they can’t get the one mixer they know how to use, etc. I have preferences, of course, but at the end of the day if you can blend between the tracks you want to play, you use what’s there and get on with it. You’re there for the people, not the other way around, and to let them down over a bratty demand is not acceptable in my book.”

Classixx borrowed the idea to ask for scratch-off lottery tickets from some friends.“Our friends, Flight Facilities, request lotto scratchers on their rider, which is a very clever idea. We stole that one from them, and it now resides on our rider. Some of our friends throw an epic dance party in LA and a classic house DJ once requested a fruit platter and MDMA. I thought that was an interesting combo.” ― Michael David

Caveman once envied another artist’s BBQ setup.“I can’t think of any really strange ones but the best backstage setup I saw was when we played a festival with the Deftones and they had their own grill and were barbecuing right next to the artist food spot and then had a massive sound system and bar in their tent. It was awesome.” ― Matthew Iwanusa

Aurora has some strange ideas of her own.“I’m not that into the music world yet ― haven’t caught up with the latest gossip. BUT it would’ve been very strange if someone requested spoons that dissolve every time they get in contact with food and water.”

The music, arts and technology festival Panorama kicks off this weekend on Randall’s Island in New York City with Arcade Fire, Kendrick Lamar and LCD Soundsystem headlining Friday through Sunday, respectively.

In anticipation of the festival, The Huffington Post asked musicians performing at the festival this weekend to recall the craziest things they’ve seen on tour.

Here are their stories:

 

-Aurora saw a man in panties playing an unusual amount of drums at once.-"I once saw a man dressed in only a pair of panties playing a thousand drums in a little one-man band. That was quite nice.”

-Caveman had some unfortunate experiences with animals while driving.-"I don’t really know. We almost hit a deer once and somehow avoided it. A massive bird flew into our window once and it was pretty disgusting. We had a night off in New Orleans and got to see the band Night Wish. That was pretty crazy!” ― Matthew Iwanusa, frontman

-Classixx might have seen Jesus.-"I once saw a guy walking down a very desolate stretch of highway. He was shirtless and carrying a gigantic wooden cross. I couldn’t understand where he was headed.” ― Michael David, co-founding member

-Daughter got confused by a sun that wouldn’t set.-"We once played a festival in Sweden and the sun didn’t set. It was surreal and beautiful; we stayed out all night confused by it!” ― Elena Tonra, frontwoman

-Ex Hex had a thing with a shrimp cocktail.-”It was crazy for me to see Lenny Kaye in person, but as far as wacky stuff, probably the shrimp cocktail in Porto, [Portugal].”

-Flosstradaumus witnessed a roundhouse kick in Russia.-”We walked out of the venue in Moscow and a dude got a roundhouse kick to the face right when we stepped outside. Never knew that move was used in a street fight.” ― Curt Cameruci, co-founding member

-DJ Harvey always has a hard time switching from parties to lonely nights.-"So many crazy stories. Honestly, though, the thing about touring that is the weirdest [is] playing parties and receiving so much love from people, being on such a high, and then ending up solo in a hotel room afterwards. I used to be a lot crazier on tour but I don’t want to implicate myself in any way.”

-Jai Wolf almost crashed a car.-”Without going into too much detail, while supporting the last Gramatik tour, me and the Brasstracks guys almost crashed our car in some random town in middle America because we all got severe food poisoning from some questionable middle-America meat. That was scary.”

-JDH & Dave P. made memories in Mexico.-”I can’t go into exact detail or names, but generally, the craziest situations have been in Mexico. Specifically, places like Tijuana.” ― JDH

-Little Scream acquired a giant baby costume.-”I just finished reading Steven Tyler’s autobiography, and nothing feels very crazy after that. For example, I’ve never had naked glitter-covered ladies hanging around my backstage that people are doing blow off of. My touring stories have much more to do with internal hilarity and in-jokes. For example, in my last band arrangement, my key player was a filmmaker who had just finished making a movie that had a giant baby costume in it as a prop. He didn’t have a proper keyboard case, so of course we were stuffing the keyboard inside of this giant baby costume. Sometimes my guitar player Marcus would put it on. He’s 6-foot-7. Pretty much everything is wonderful when you’re traveling with a giant man in a baby costume.”

-Oh Wonder survived an 60-mph attack from an umbrella.-"An umbrella pole flew through the front window of our tour bus at 60 mph.”

-Grace Potter saw someone accidentally light their face on fire.-"I saw a lady catch on fire trying to show off [by spitting] whiskey into a fire one time. Yeah, I saw her face catch on fire. ... There are so many, it’s funny. Well, how about this one? We stopped at a Walmart, and everyone in the band and crew on my team bought these onesie nighties that are meant for little children and put them on and wandered around the store totally normal until we were escorted out. Were we escorted out or did we escort ourselves out? [Publicist: Well, I think we were escorted out but I think it was because it was closing or something?] Yeah, they found a gentle reason to get us out of there, but we were definitely milling around in children’s clothing.”

-Preservation Hall Band had a musical moment with a founding member of Grateful Dead.-"Watching our clarinetist Charlie Gabriel trade licks with Bob Weir was crazy ... Crazy in a beautiful, ‘I can’t believe this is happening’ way.”

-Prinze George almost got lost in a ghost town.-"Twain Town in Missouri was probably the craziest thing we’ve seen on tour. It was a rest stop we made on the way to Chicago from Kansas. It was like a ghost town, super empty, and looked like something out of the 1930s. Isabelle [de Leon] and our tour manager were freaking out and didn’t think we’d make it out alive. It was pretty creepy, but I was into it.”

-Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats saw a couple doing a very intimate thing right outside their tour bus.-"Anilingus outside our bus, two days ago in Zurich. They had no idea that our bus was full of people watching.”

-Rüfüs du Sol endured Russian cops storming a club with assault rifles.-"Cops in Moscow storming a club with assault rifles was pretty intense. They went behind the booth and had the DJ stop playing.”

-The Julie Ruin has seen Kathleen Hanna tattoos everywhere.-”I didn’t realize so many people have [frontwoman and former Bikini Kill founder] Kathleen’s face tattooed on them.”

-Silversun Pickups saw a burger truck engulfed in flames outside their show.-”Outside of our show in Sheffield in the U.K., a burger truck was engulfed in flames. People were cheering because they apparently thought the food was ‘shite.’ Also, I opened our bus door after a show in Arkansas and Judge Reinhold was sitting inside. No idea how he got there. Nice fellow ...” ― Brian Aubert, founding member

*Listen:* “Circadian Rhythm (Last Dance)”

 

-Lindsey Stirling had a driver who wove through traffic on the wrong side of the freeway.-”One time, we were in the Philippines [and] our driver went backwards in traffic. Traffic was so bad, we had a police escort ― basically a policeman on a motorcycle in front of us. But traffic was so bad, and we had to get to the airport, that he literally jumped through this hole in the median and took us onto the other side of the freeway so we could get to the airport on time.”

-Tourist had fun on a cruise ship.-”At Ultra Music festival, the back stage area is a cruise ship.”

-White Lung witnessed the disturbing disposal of a Saint Bernard.-”Our guitarist Kenny swears he saw a dead Saint Bernard flung on the side of the freeway once. No one believes him.”

Sanjay Leela Bhansali is set to score a casting coup for his next, 'Padmavati'. The filmmaker, we hear, is in the process of finalising an industry biggie to play king to Deepika Padukone's titular character post Vicky Kaushal's exit from the project. Buzz is that SLB is torn between Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan.

A source working on the project says, "Bhansali is looking for an established actor since it is a powerful role and will challenge Ranveer Singh's anti-hero, Alauddin Khilji. There has to be some chemistry between the actor and Deepika, especially for intimate scenes. Who better than an SRK or a Hrithik to play king Rawal Ratan Singh to the beautiful Padmavati?"*Hrithik Roshan*

Vicky, who was last seen in 'Raman Raghav 2.0' with Nawazuddin Siddiqui, was initially in consideration, but he reportedly lost out on the opportunity by revealing his association with the film early on. Some believe Deepika's reluctance to romance the three-film-old actor on screen led to his ouster. Bhansali then turned his focus to Hrithik and Shah Rukh with whom he has worked in the past.*Sanjay Leela Bhansali*

"The filmmaker seems to be favouring the Hrithik-Deepika pairing at this stage since their on-screen chemistry is unexplored. On the other hand, Shah Rukh has shown interest in the project. Bhansali is expected to take a decision shortly as the project is scheduled to roll in September," says the source.

A few reports claim Shahid Kapoor has caught SLB's attention too, but our sources say the contest is between Shah Rukh and Hrithik alone.

Bhansali's spokesperson, however, maintained, "There has been a lot of speculation surrounding the casting of Padmavati. This is to clarify that no names have been confirmed so far. An official announcement will be made once the cast is finalised."

The easiest way to sport white is to incorporate it into your accessories, like an umbrella, a poly nylon jacket or raincoat. You can opt for white clutches/ totes. Loose, white sweatshirts and tees with quirky graphics or cool slogans are in vogue and work well. Avoid white bottoms. Sporting a monochrome look with black bottoms will exude a casual but chic vibe. If you want to wear a thick cotton skater dress, don’t forget to layer. Throw on a bomber jacket or a white waistcoat. Opt for natural, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen, which won’t stick to your skin.

The best way to wear white for men is to simply layer it and wear deeper tones underneath. Go with breathable fabrics like cotton, voiles and chiffon, but make sure the under-layer is not sheer.

A nice poplin shirt over a white V-neck t-shirt worn with linen or denim shorts are apt for the rains. Accessorising with white is hot this season. White wayfarers look cool on most Indian skin tones.

Slippers/ shoes made of waterproof patent are big too. If you are open to taking risks, complete the look with a white linen hat. Everything mono white is perfect this season.

While shooting for a fight sequence in Manmohan Desai's "Coolie" in Bangalore in July 1982, Bachchan was critically injured and had to be admitted to Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital. August 2, when he had shown signs of recovering from coma, is regarded as his second birthday by not only his fans and well-wishers but by the actor himself.

On Tuesday, reports surfaced online that 'Kabali' had leaked even before release.

Rajinikanth's fans were shocked to find reports which claimed that nearly 30 minutes of the film were leaked online.

The makers of the film, however, have clarified that the film has not leaked online.

"My next film is a romantic one. I want to reinvent myself, so I am taking break for six months. I have not even taken a Sunday off in the last few years, so I need to slow down. So, right now it's a sabbatical for me and then I will start with my romantic film," Kamat told IANS.

As a director, Kamat has worked on films like "Mumbai Meri Jaan", "Drishyam", "Dombivali Fast" and "Force". He says he has unfortunately not made a film from a woman's point of view.

Asked why all his films have been from a male's point of view, he said: "During my theatre days, I have done all women-centric themes. I will make a women-centric film in future because I know this is one question even I have asked myself.

"Probably I didn't get the right script... It was such an honour to work with Tabu in 'Drishyam', but you need a substantial role for an actor of her calibre."

Asked that since this film has been promoted as Harshvardhan's film from day one, does she feel sidelined. Saiyami told IANS: "He signed the film eight months before me. His journey has been completely different.

"And it is the launch of Anil Kapoor's son, so it's going to be the topic of discussion... It's a huge deal. When you talk about being sidelined, I don't think that's the case because if you are doing a love story, you can't sideline any of the lovers -- the girl or the boy."

Mehra's directorial is inspired by the tale of the legend of Mirza-Sahiban and is touted to be an epic action-romance set in contemporary times.

Saiyami said her family has supported her through her journey.

"These are just baseless rumours circulated for fun. There's no truth in reports that 'Kabali' has leaked online. Producer Kalaipuli S. Thanu plans to officially address the matter via a statement," a source from the film's unit told IANS.
